Interviews: Celebrity Stylist, Zoe Lem

In the world of fashion, Zoe Lem does it all. Whether it’s styling the stars for the red carpet and participants on the UK version of “What Not to Wear, or flying off to the Middle East to work with the English language version of the Al-Jazeera news network, she’s been there, done that, and with a certain je ne sais quoi. Lem trained as a designer before deciding to focus on styling, and now her work can be seen on A-list celebs, magazine covers, music videos, and a myriad of other places. So, the favourite question to ask stylists and designers: who would you consider to be your biggest influences? That really is a difficult one to give a one word answer, I am very inspired by vintage clothing and the 20’s through to 50’s there was such beautiful style. If it’s who rather than what, then there is no one person. But my mother was really so into clothing growing up, even now her favorite shop is Topshop and she has a very funky style. I was brought up on charity shops, markets and finding great bargains in unusual places, a long while before it was cool to go for second hand chic!

Interviews: Caroline Issa – Owner of Tank Magazine

Caroline Issa – owner of Tank Magazine – is known for her impeccable sense of style but fashion aside Caroline is also an astute entrepreneur. Being at the helm of such an innovative and influential publication means she’s always on the go and in the know. Here, Caroline takes some time out of her busy schedule to talk fashion, music, travel and more… Can you tell our readers a little bit about yourself, your background and how you came to own Tank Magazine? I actually studied business in Philadelphia as an undergraduate and moved to San Francisco after that as a strategic management consultant, working with fashion retailers and consumer brand companies on their business strategy. Working in the US and in Asia, I was then moved to work in London with a UK-based retailer before meeting my now-business partner, Masoud Golsorkhi who had started Tank magazine four years earlier. I found him to be an inspiring partner and thought, I’m young, when else can I become an entrepreneur with such an amazing opportunity and product. Five years later, I’m still here! Any thoughts on increasing Tank’s online presence and launching a blog? We have been debating in the office what we want Tank’s online presence to be. We currently have our own project, www.tank.tv which we started five years ago showing moving images online and has had shows at the Tate Modern and the ICA. Regarding our magazine’s online presence, we are aiming to launch something unique, which doesn’t just translate what the paper version is but adds a layer for the readers. Watch this space. Your job requires that you’re constantly on the go, travelling. But which destination is your favourite spot to just getaway? I love Singapore for the food, Beijing for the sights and Montreal for […]

Tantrums & Tiaras: Marc Jacobs, Suzy Menkes and Cathy Horyn

Poor Marc Jacobs, he just can’t seem to catch a break. Since Suzy Menkes’ less than flattering review of his show at NY fashion week, all eyes have been on Jacobs in Paris wondering if he’d let bygones be bygones or if he was still hurting. Well a number of critics concluded it was the latter and after his amazing finale at Louis Vuitton, The Guardians, Jess Cartner-Morley hinted that Jacobs was still acting a diva and fashion journalist, Cathy Horyn wrote on her blog, I didn’t care for the gesture Jacobs made to Suzy at the end of the show. He stuck his tongue out. I guess he thought he was being cool or funny, on account of his feelings about her review of his New York show. It’s unbelievable, really. He should have known better. But wait…there’s more. Not one to keep his mouth shut (and don’t we love him for it eh?) Jacobs hit back with a comment on Horyn’s blog explaining his actions….

News: Fendi’s Great Wall of Ambition

It appears the latest trend among fashion houses with big bucks is the search for original and wonderful ways to stage their collections. Karl Lagerfeld upped the stakes with the Chanel Cruise Collection 2008 held in Los Angeles, at the Santa Monica Airport and which employed the use of private jets emblazoned with it’s Logo. And now he promises to go one better with a Fendi runway show to be held on the Great Wall of China in October. The presentation is a strategic move on the part of parent company LVMH who hope it’ll boost sales subsequently making Fendi a stronger global brand. Impressive wise this ranks high but I wonder what the options were before they settled on the Great Wall? Perhaps Buckingham Palace or the Taj Mahal? As much as the theatrics add glamour and excitement sometimes I do lament on what happened to just having a good old fashioned show with lights, music and stick thin models in need of a hearty meal. Go back to black…

This years MTV movie awards didn’t just play host to Hollywood’s finest actors and musicians it also debuted some of this seasons key fashion trends. Rivals Cameron Diaz and Jessica Biel both donned the infamous little black dress. Cameron went for this strapless mini with faint spotted detailed by Luella. I think this daring length looks fantastic on her and teamed with simple heels and minimal accessories attention hasn’t been drawn away from the dress itself. If you haven’t got a red carpet event to attend and feel that a dress like this might leave you a little over dressed at the family BBQ, worry not; for a more casual approach try a simple jersey sun dress or this Black sleeveless dress with bubble hem, £120.00, by Antipodium.

But here comes the dilemma…which singer should front his show? According to Vogue Kane says he has Beth Ditto or Iggy Pop in mind….I say Beth Ditto. Failing that I’m thinking Amy Winehouse? But she’d have to finally shed the beehive. What do you guys think? Which female artist should perform the accompanying music to Kane’s show? [Image:Flickr]

Elle explores: Fashions Greatest Hits

This months July issue of Elle has a great feature on the inspiration of musical genres in fashion, which got me thinking about how my musical preferences have influenced my style. When I started to become fashionably self aware – which coincided with my first experience of pocket money – my love for hip hop had me parading around in baggy clothing and big earrings. Salt-n-Pepa were my style icons and TLC took over where they left off. Then I discovered Prince and my life would never be the same again. Purple rain spoke to me….but Prince’ style spoke to me more.

Unlikely style icons

Unlikely style icons are popping up all over the place, gaining credibility for their quirky, unusual approach to fashion and take on style. Modern girls (and boys) are now naming the likes of politicians, geeks, and even cartoon characters as inspiration. A quick Google of the phrase ‘unlikely style icons’ produces results ranging from Marge Simpson to Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz, and even…shock horror…Britney Spears – but in all seriousness, there were some truly great names there that are deserving of the accolade of “style icon , standing apart from the usual suspects because they are self-styled in a truly personal way. The likes of musicians Annie Lennox and Amy Winehouse are true fashion trailblazers and my personal favourite, Ugly Betty is an icon in her own right. Her melange of printed shirts and colourful knits has a ‘just-thrown-together’ look, or geek-chic if you like, but is actually a combination of highly sought after labels like Primp, Marc Jacobs and Kenneth Cole….channelled by the cool indie kids whose image is interpreted as effortless but in reality is carefully co-ordinated, combining random charity shop finds. On the other end of the scale, super-grooming and classic style is proving inspiring for many. Condoleeza Rice is frequently featured in the fashion pages, alongside burlesque dancer Dita Von Teese and immaculate Desperate housewife Brees. All in their own way achieving a kind of female ideal for very different reasons. The great think about unlikely style icons is their illustration that style is individual. [Image:uglyisin]

Neu Years Rave-olution

Emerging from the music scene are glow-stick-waving bands like the Klaxons and Shitdisco, who are pioneering the trend while Christopher Kane, who graduated from Central Saint Martins early last year showed his official collection at London Fashion Week last September using all the bright acid colours that are associated with neu rave in his S/S 07 collection. Up and coming label Cassette Playa by designer Carrie Mundane is the biggest hit on the rave scene and its eye popping designs look as though they have stepped out of a world filled with retired video game stars such as Pac Man, Sonic the Hedgehog and Donkey Kong.

Kate’s all over the news today

Former editor of the Daily Mirror and judge of America’s Got Talent, Piers Morgan wasted no time revealing how Kate Moss (who is rumoured to be spending £25,000 to fix Pete Doherty’s rotten teeth) demanded he was thrown out of Nick Knights, Moet & Chandon masked ball last month. Morgan could not contain his laughter after Pete stumbled into a wall while singing during his karaoke performance. Laughing so hard, he removed his mask, to the horror of Kate who screamed, ‘Oh fucking hell, what the fuck is he doing in here. Just fucking get him out of here. Apparently Pete was so out of it he had no clue what was going on. Kate got her way and had security march Morgan out of the building. He told the Mail on Sunday, “Well, just as I thought, she’s a drunken, foul-mouthed, ill-mannered, paranoid Croydon girl with a cocaine-desecrated hooter and spots. And Pete’s a filthy talentless junkie who can’t sing. Meanwhile Simon Cowell can’t keep quiet about the fact that he wants to sign Kate who he thinks will sell solely on the fact that she has star appeal and David Walliams and Matt Lucas have convinced her to make a guest appearance on the stage version of Little Britain in aid of Comic Relief. All in all quite a packed day of news for Miss Moss soon to be Mrs Doherty…

Pete Doherty designs for Gio-Goi

It’s true, Pete Doherty has sold his soul to fashion. Announced just yesterday, Gio-Goi, the label known for dressing many in the music industry confirmed Doherty will be involved in the design process for the Spring/Summer ’07 range. Calling the recovering drug addict the inspiration behind the line, co-founder Anthony Donnelly sang his praises for Doherty claiming that, “Peter looks fantastic as a model. We are very excited. We look forward to having Pete’s influence as a rock icon in the design process.” With Kate dabbling in music and frequenting the stage with the Babyshambles, it was inevitable Doherty would try his hand at fashion. Fans won’t have long to wait as the line is launching next month and will be sold in Selfridges. A special preview will be given by Doherty who is set to wear some of the designs at a secret Babyshambles gig in London scheduled just before Christmas. Interview with Ryan Leslie

It’s extremely difficult to define or summarise the work of Ryan Leslie in the small space afforded by a blog post, but I shall aim to try. A Harvard graduate at 19, Leslie is credited for his discovery of young rnb star Cassie, and famed for producing work for artists such as Beyonce, Britney Spears and Donell Jones just to name a few. Do a little googling and you can’t help but be impressed by the level of interaction he maintains with his fan base. With a regularly updated video blog, and myspace page, Leslie also puts his extensive knowledge of online marketing into his global marketing and media company NextSelection Lifestyle Group. One can only wonder where he finds the time to tour, promote his own musical career and stay fashionable. I managed to grab a little of Leslie’s time to get an insight into his fashion life… Favourite designer: My favourite designer would have to be myself. Second would have to be Hedi Slimane, John Galliano, and Tom Ford. Definition of your style:My style is defined by my state of mind at any given moment, which is perpetually evolving. How much work/effort is put into your clothing and style? Is there a process which an artist has to go through to ensure the right image is portrayed?I basically wear a uniform everyday which affords me the opportunity to focus on new entrepreneurial ventures to expand the NextSelection brand. That uniform is a personal style statement reflecting a mind state that is focused on the advancement of an enterprise. Most artists have stylists. Piece of clothing in your wardrobe which gets the most wear?My pair of custom jeans made by my personal tailor, Roger Hinds in Boston. It’s extremely common now for an artist to have a fashion label, […]

Doherty said of his encounter with Moss…. “She was angry about the blood-spraying thing. She beat the crap out of me. She laid into me punching and kicking. “I’m alright, but she hurt my finger. Angeline Tournier

“I want to make shoes that are beautifully designed and finely made, but without an over the top price tag” If your feet are on the larger side, then you’ll know a thing or two about the difficulty in not only finding your shoe size (especially in the sales) let alone actually finding cute shoes which don’t look gigantic. Well lawyer turned footwear designer Angeline Tournier can relate and as a result of her frustrations set up Angeline Tournier London, specialising in designing and manufacturing footwear ranging from sizes EU36 right up to EU44 and which look great on big feet as well as small. Paris department store, Le Bon Marche exclusively bought Angeline’s debut collection and she’s just recently released her spring/summer 2006 collection…. What do you enjoy the most about your job? Four things 1) Working for myself, 2) fulfilling a lifelong dream to create shoes available in larger sizes, 3) being creative, 4) no longer being stuck in an over-air-conditioned office, wearing “formal” clothes and spending my time analysing and sorting out other people’s legal problems, and doing a job with little creative outlet. And like the least? Working for myself means I never get “time off”, I tend to work longer hours than before and I can not “get away” from work, even on week-ends and holidays. Can you tell us a bit about the design process involved in shoe design? The design process takes place over a number of months. I kind of visualise shoes or boots I’d like to wear myself, I sketch my initial ideas, sometimes I get inspiration from a trim off an item of clothing, a type of leather I see at a leather trade show or other totally unrelated topic. A few weeks before I need to submit my drawings […]
