Sibling rivalry: Which Kardashian deserves to land an American Vogue cover?

“To be in Vogue has to mean something,” stated Anna Wintour, and, well, she’s speaking the biblical truth. Campaigning for this prestigious right are two siblings from the world’s most talked about family/klan, depending on how you prefer to address them. Kim Kardashian – the queen of Céline separates and Tom Ford pieces so tight, they create curves ever she didn’t know existed– has kept the fashion set (and herself) guessing whether the coveted prize of cover girl shall be hers (let’s not forget, she’s already been L’uomo-d). From a lobbying partner, whom eventually got his beau to make an unforgettable entrance at the 2013 MET Gala – an event she had previously been banned from by Her Majesty Anna Wintour – to befriending Carine Roitfeld and scoring couture pieces (and front row seats) in Paris, earlier this year; Kim isn’t playing games, she’s ruddy serious. But then again, so is her twee-faced, doe-eyed, long-limbed sibling, Kendall Jenner. The upcoming model has been scoring some fashion hot seats of late. From a nipple-on-show performance at the Marc Jacobs autumn/winter 2014 show to walking for Giles in the Big Smoke, sitting shoulder-to-shoulder with Anna Wintour at the Topshop Unique show and posing for a certified selfie with Delevingne and gang backstage; junior Jenner’s sure as hell making her mark in notable fashion circles.  And, all sans sexual controversies, slip-ups and stunts. So, who will be victorious in the race to win Wintour’s (steely) heart, and be the first to grace the glossy covers of the world’s most highly regarded fashion tome? Below, our strongest arguments for putting either sibling on the cover of American Vogue- or both, if Wintour’s feeling generous… Why Kim Kardashian? Luxury-appreciation factor: Kim sure knows the wow factor value of pairing the luxurious, most expensive of wardrobe pieces together […]

Givenchy floral bomber jacket: Yay or Nay?

Give a veteran wardrobe piece a seasonal overhaul, and the style set are all over it like a rash. That’s what happened with autumn’s latest staple hit, the striking Givenchy floral felt wool bomber jacket, which pretty much left us scraping our jaws off the ground. Well, we know the starry celeb set is a fan; Carine Roitfeld fronted the autumn/winter 2013 Givenchy campaign, avec her perfect-faced daughter, and Kim Kardashian is a front row fixture, dripping in the luxury fashion house’s runway fresh pieces, and referring to creative designer Riccardo Tisco as ‘Ricky’ (all casual names, and stuff). So, putting the eye-popping bomber’s purchasing potential to the test, here’s our round up of the reasons why you should (and probably shouldn’t) buy the Givenchy floral bomber:  Yay Statement piece: If there ever were a head-turner, this blooming bomber (pardon the pun) would be it! The off-centre zip detail, multi-pink, green and black floral print and silver-tone hardware make this jacket a must-have piece for those who love an off-kilter feminine piece. Classic style jacket: The sportier sibling of the traditional biker jacket, you can’t beat a bomber jacket when it comes to stocking up on staples. The slightly curved hemline and relaxed fit bring a fresh appeal to this modern style essential. Day-to-night option: The heady print makes this Givenchy floral bomber jacket perfect for pairing with an all black ensemble for work, and heading straight out for cocktails when the clock stikes 5.30pm! Just don’t forget to slip into your best heels. Nay  Price: They don’t say fashion bleeds you dry without good reason! Ringing in at a piggy bank emptying £2,970, it’ll be beans on toast for supper every evening. Trend-centric: Although we were gagging to grab this bomber jacket the minute Tisci sent floral-drenched models down the runway earlier […]

Who is Gemma Refoufi?

There was a time when the world didn’t know who Cara Delevingne was, but the world soon learnt. And now we think Gemma Aicha Refoufi could very well be on her way to becoming the next Cara D. Cara got he big break when she posed for Mario Testino in her first Burberry ad campaign, and Gemma definitely had us paying attention to her when she appeared alongside Soo Joo, Zuzanna Bijoch and Herieth Paul for Tom Ford’s eccentric, Andy Warhol inspired autumn/winter 2013 ad campaign which the designer photographed himself. Gemma was born in Britain, but is a mixture of nationalities which probably contributes to her unique and stunning beauty. She was discovered by IMG Models, whose books boast the likes of Kate Moss, Miranda Kerr, Karlie Kloss, Gisele, Heidi Klum, Tyra Banks, Irina Shayk, Rosie Huntington Whiteley and more. So basically, she’s in good hands! And speaking of Mossy, former Vogue Paris editor-in-chief Carine Roitfeld told Gemma that she could very well be the next Kate Moss, which is pretty much the biggest compliment any aspiring model can receive. We think you should remember the 24-year-old British model’s name because we predict you’ll be hearing a lot more of it in the not-so-distant future. You can follow her on Twitter (@gemrefoufi) to be kept in the loop.

Love or Hate: Kate Moss’s racy, sparkly catsuit

Kate Moss regularly divides opinion as far as her lifestyle is concerned, but this time it’s her wardrobe that is coming under potential scrutiny. The iconic supermodel attended Carine Roitfeld’s cocktail party in quite an interesting ensemble, comprising of a see-through shimmery, sparkly catsuit, with a playsuit underneath and a blazer on top to cover (some of) her modesty. Is this appropriate attire for a 39-year old? Or for a mother? Would you be mortified if you could see your mum’s bum cheeks hanging out, regardless of how hot, famous and successful she is? We know that Kate still has the body to pull most things off, but does that mean she has a free pass to wear whatever she wants? We admire her bravery and dedication to standing out from the crowd… and although we can’t resist a bit of sparkle, we don’t think this is one of Mossy’s finest sartorial moments. What do you guys think? Is she bedazzling, or did she hit a bum note? [poll id-“395”]

Should ‘irresponsible’ ads be banned outright?

Another day, another highly charged fashion controversy. Teamed with comfortable casualwear and an extensive archive of controversial adverts, clothing retailer American Apparel knows a thing or two about comfortably creating a stir (pardon the pun). The US retailer has found itself in hot water with the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) once again, after running a series of digital ads (of which three out of the 23 have been banned in the UK) featuring semi-naked women. The ASA has ruled that the some of the ad images – which promote tights and a range of coloured T-shirts, and have caused an onslaught of consumer complaints to be directed to the regulatory body – sexualise a model who appeared to be under 16 years old. Well, it may come as no surprise that the visually outspoken clothing brand continues to brave the wrath of concerned parents and regulatory bodies by providing a constant stream of somewhat suggestive ad imagery. In 2009, an advert featuring a loungewear hoodie by said retailer came under fire after the model appeared to be under 16. She was in fact a 23-year-old, fully consenting adult, but by the grace of the Fine Line Prevention Fraternity in the heavens above, she had a flawless, pre-pubescent face. Well, isn’t that really the aesthetic that most fashion campaigns go for: young, fresh faces, where it is difficult to tell the age of the subject, (many of whom are often older than they look) but in American Apparel’s case, they aren’t conservatively dressed? Another point of complaint that landed American Apparel in the ASA’s bad books was the mother of a 12-year-old girl who wanted to look at tights online with her daughter, but found the images featuring models wearing high denier tights, and nothing but those tights “unnecessarily sexual and inappropriate for a […]

Lady Gaga, Sarah Jessica Parker, Naomi Campbell (& more) get the Disney treatment for Barneys

As part of the epic collaboration between Disney and Barneys this Christmas, a short film entitled Electric Holiday is due to be played on LED screens around the Madison Avenue flagship store from tomorrow! The film follows protagonist Minnie Mouse as she embarks on a dreamy Paris Fashion Week adventure, and crosses paths with a host of the fashion industry’s hottest names… Some of the recognisble faces in the film include Lady Gaga, Sarah Jessica Parker, Daphne Guinness, Carine Roitfeld, Emmanuelle Alt, Franca Sozzani, Anna Dello Russo, Naomi Campbell and Cathy Horyn, most of whom can be found sitting FROW watching the catwalk action. Minnie Mouse also gets her make-up done by Pat McGrath before being photographed by Steven Meisel, while Balenciaga’s Nicolas Ghesquière ensures Mickey Mouse is ready for his close-up too. We can’t fault the designer/celeb transformations; who is your favourite so far? Stay tuned for the full video… [WWD]

Kate Upton is now a Vogue cover girl!

You better believe it Kate Upton critics… the 20-year-old former Sports Illustrated model has just scored her first ever Vogue cover. It didn’t take long for her to cement her fashionista status and get Vogue’s seal of approval, did it? First Carine Roitfeld’s CR Fashion Book and now Vogue – what next, we wonder? Having said that, Vogue Italia doesn’t actually reflect every single issue of the fashion Bible. After all, Kim Kardashian has fronted the Italian version of the mag, despite Anna Wintour vowing to never choose Kim or any of the Kardashian “klan” (sorry!) to front the US edition. Still, Vogue is still Vogue at the end of the day and we think Kate looks incredible. There’s something very old pin-up girl/Cindy Crawford back in the day about it, don’t you think? Plus, we haven’t seen a model fill a bra quite like Kate on the front of a fashion glossy for quite some time, so nice going!

What has Kanye West done to Kim Kardashian?!

Another day, another confusing Kim Kardashian outfit courtesy of Kanye West. We assume. It’s hard to believe that this is the same woman who has left our jaws floor-bound with her red carpet outfit choices on so many occasions in the past… because lately, all we seem to be doing is shaking our heads in disappointment. How can someone who used to be so brave and confident with her fashion choices  – which, may we say, were usually spot on! – think she looks good in an outfit she is spilling out of and is hugging her in all the wrong places? And that’s just the ill-fitting black dress; we haven’t even got to the slouchy boots yet! So Kim might have been denied a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, but who cares? That’s not why she captured the world’s attention and hearts. We love her for being herself; after all, that’s pretty much why she got to where she is today. Yes she’s made some bad choices in her life (sartorial and personal – but then again, who hasn’t?) but one thing we always applauded was her rich, varied and usually fabulous style. Dressing for her curvaceous figure (which most women would die for by the way!), experimenting with fashion and generally having fun with her wardrobe. That’s not to say we haven’t loved her black and white wardrobe lately; au contraire, monochrome is one of our favourite timeless trends (just ask Karl Lagerfeld and Carine Roitfeld) but it’s not the colour scheme we have a problem with. Do you think Kim really reckons she looks good under boyfriend Kanye West’s “creative control” or is she so blinded by love that she’ll listen to him regardless? [poll id=”365″] [Image]

Chanel’s Little Black Jacket exhibit is coming to London!

We may have just bid a sad farewell to the Olympics, but fear not Londoners, as Chanel’s Little Black Jacket exhibition is coming to our fine city. Hooray! The installation is based on the book The Little Black Jacket: Chanel’s Classic Revisited by Karl Lagerfeld and Carine Roitfeld, and will be opening at London’s Saatchi Gallery from October 12th til the 29th. “The special event underlines the brand’s values of creativity, modernity and excellence,” reads a statement from Chanel. “The public will discover the versatility and timelessness of the iconic Chanel jacket through Karl Lagerfeld’s photographs.” The exhibit will feature 113 pictures of Chanel’s friends and family from the likes of Sarah Jessica Parker pictured above to Elle Fanning and Lily Allen among others. And apparently, the Chanel stores in Bond Street, Sloane Street and Brompton Cross will all feature some recent Chanel jackets in the windows to mark the occasion! Now all we need is for the Alexander McQueen retrospective ‘Savage Beauty’ to head our way and our year will be complete! [Vogue] [Image]

Mila Kunis is back for Miss Dior handbags

We’re so glad to see Mila Kunis back for Christian Dior’s Miss Dior handbag ad campaign – her debut last season was rather stunning, and the French fashion House would have been rather foolish to not keep her on! The new Miss Dior handbags campaign for the autumn/winter 2012 season was shot by Mario Sorrenti in Los Angeles and was styled by the one and only Carine Roitfeld. We love the 1950s Hollywood celebrity style make-over that Mila Kunis has going on – it’s not hugely dissimilar to her Elle UK cover shoot which was just as breathtaking. Even in the 50s, we still think Mila would have driven the paps wild, so the theme of the campaign is spot on! You can catch Mila’s Miss Dior ads in the September issues of Vogue Paris, Vanity Fair US, Harper’s Bazaar UK and Tatler UK among others. Some behind the scenes pics and a short film will also be released on Wednesday, so keep your eyes peeled for those next week! Do you like Mila’s second Miss Dior ad campaign? [WWD]

Saskia de Brauw and Joan Smalls for Chanel’s spring/summer 2012 ad campaign

The Chanel spring/summer 2012 ad campaign appears to have been created by the ultimate dream team. With Karl Lagerfeld behind the lens and Carine Roitfeld on hand to take care of the styling, the end result was inevitably going to be fabulous. Saskia de Brauw and Joan Smalls showcase the movement of the latest Chanel pieces as they pull structured, acrobatic poses in the black and white images, which were set against a stunning backdrop at the Hôtel du Cap-Eden-Roc in Antibes France – the same place the Resort 2012 show took place. While ordinary spring/summer campaigns would naturally choose to feature bright and bold colours and prints, Chanel has gone in the opposite direction, which is what ultimately sets it apart from the rest and makes it such an irreplaceable brand. Muted elegance and timeless beauty is what we expect to find from Chanel – and that’s exactly what we got! Flawless as usual, Karl! [Sassi Sam]

What we really thought of Kanye West’s first fashion collection

I must admit that, perhaps unlike others, when I first heard Kanye West was launching a womenswear line, I was rather excited. Not excited in the way that Miu Miu’s glitter boots send me into total sartorial meltdown, or in the same way that the fashion world is waiting to hear who’s replacing Galliano, but in a way that I’m utterly intrigued and entertained by the idea that a jumped-up hip hop star who likes floor-length fur coats and excessive bling could make a go of it in another competitive creative industry. Of course I had my doubts – one only has to look at Lindsay Lohan’s disastrous streak at Emanuel Ungaro to see that celebrity lines are ill-fated – but I also had hopes of having another Victoria Beckham surprise that sent the industry spinning on the very tables it turns on. And so it was that Kanye West presented his first fashion collection at Paris Fashion Week on Saturday. He chose Lycée Henri IV, the prestigious public secondary school in the capital’s Latin quarter, to debut his designs, and invited an impressive list of no more than 100 guests who would sit on two single rows either side of the runway. For all Kanye’s egotistical ways, it was a humble beginning to his career in fashion, and had his collection lived up to the calibre of its high-profile audience – Anna Wintour, Carine Roitfeld, Alexander Wang, Ciara and the Olsen twins all sat front row – this could have been quite the fashion moment. Unfortunately, Kanye’s collection was everything it shouldn’t have been, but it wasn’t without effort. The hip-hop star – a regular fashion front-rower and fan, let’s not forget – seeked advice from London designer Louise Goldin after his attempt to enrole at Central Saint Martins […]

Emmanuelle Alt’s first Vogue Paris cover has landed!

Since Carine Roitfeld’s departure from French Vogue, fashion’s been speculating with eager anticipation what the first cover under Emmanuelle Alt’s creative direction will look like – but wonder no more, it’s just landed. Those of you hoping for something edgier might be disappointed by the softness of Alt’s debut April cover, which stars Gisele looking sickly sweet in a white lace Dolce & Gabbana SS11 dress, but we for one love the romanticism. Looking as naturally beautiful as her St Bart’s backdrop, Gisele – shot by Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin – is noticeably under-styled with next-to-no accessories and undone hair; a reflection, perhaps, of Alt’s own effortless style. Suffice to say we’re suitably inspired for spring (cravings for crisp white lace, anyone?), but what do you think of Emmanuelle’s first cover for Vogue Paris: sweet and simplistic or lacking in attitude? Yes, Shulman has spoken out against the ‘jutting bones and no breasts or hips look’ that designers have been increasingly pushing down the catwalks since the advent of the waif in the 90s. In a letter to a variety of fashion designers and houses – including Karl Lagerfeld, John Galliano, Prada, Versace, Yves Saint Laurent and Balenciaga – Shulman said that Vogue was being supplied with minuscule sample garments which forced them to hire tiny models which the magazine then had to airbrush to look larger and appeal to readers.
