Tamara Mellon reveals her expansion plans for Jimmy Choo

Fabulous. That’s the word I would use to describe co-founder of Jimmy Choo, Tamara Mellon. Now, I know there are tons of other descriptive words probably more apt, but fabulous is enough for me. She’s a fabulous business woman, has a fabulous personality and dishes out fabulous pearls of wisdom. Yesterday evening I took a trip down to the London College of Fashion for The Sunday Times Style Lecture with Tamara Mellon. It was worth it.

Katy Perry is innocent/sexy school girl in Henry Holland

Katy Perry has that innocent yet sexy school girl mix down to a tee. She got geek chic so right a few years ago in her Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F) music video (and as it’s Friday, we might as well watch it once or twice to get prepared for the weekend ahead!) and her latest school girl look is just as successful. Katy made an appearance on the Jimmy Fallon show at the Rockerfeller Center in New York last night, and opted to wear an instantly recognisable collared religious top from the brand spanking new Henry Holland spring/summer 2014 collection, paired with a pleated leather Belstaff skirt, knee high socks and cute pigtails in her hair. Despite the innocence, we predict this look will drive a lot of boys wild. What do you think? Do you love it as much as we do or is Britney Spears the only female singer who can pull off the school girl look for you?

Hemline Headache: Maxi or Midi? We couldn’t possibly choose!

We’ve got a sartorial predicament on our hands. Should our wardrobe loyalties lie with the all-concealing maxi skirt, or should we take the snip and opt for the midi? It’s a toughie, we know, but with recent fashion inclinations leaning toward the latter, and Mad Men fever seriously gripping the catwalks as we’re headed towards a ‘50s revival (thanks, Miuccia), the midi has been making serious waves in fashion circles. The maxi isn’t far behind though. Fast becoming a permanent fixture in the wardrobes of the style conscious; the maxi skirt isn’t just a summer flirtation, but looks equally winter-appropriate teamed with a chunky knit. We’re still torn, though. We love that the maxi will give the illusion of a few added extra inches to our already lacking pins. But we also love how the calf-skimming midi will let us show off those killer Jimmy Choo’s, and the heels in turn will make our calves appear gazelle-like. (We hope.) So, we’ve decided to select the best of each, and let you take on the difficult task of deciding!   The Midi Contenders    Acne Romantic printed taffeta midi skirt, £310, available at Net-a-porter   Marble Run print calf skirt, £55, available at Topshop   Marni midi skirt, £408 £285, available at My Theresa   Accordion pleat skirt, £39.99, available at Zara   The Maxi Contenders   D&G Tulle maxi skirt, £435, available at Net-a-porter T by Alexander Wang Silk Maxi Skirt, £59, available at My Theresa Front Split maxi skirt, £40, Topshop Missoni Giunilla crochet-knit print maxi skirt, £730 £295, available at My Theresa

Our 10 best dressed at the 2015 Golden Globes

We’ve had Golden Globes fever here at MFL today! After sifting through a ton of dress releases at a ridiculously early hour this morning and drinking copious amounts of coffee while debating on who should make the cut, we’ve finally managed to narrow down our faves. We must admit, quite a few celebs “got it right”. We were treated to a variety of dreamy dresses, from strapless to cut-out, thigh-high splits and one-shouldered gowns with white being the most popular colour of choice. Selecting the final 10 was a challenge to say the least. But we did it! Here’s our 10 best dressed celebs at the 2015 Golden Globes… AMY ADAMS Amy Adams was the epitome of old school glam in a custom-made, one-shouldered Atelier Versace gown embellished with Swarovski crystal detail on the back and wore the Jimmy Choo “Patsy” platform sandals to complete her look. ANNA KENDRICK Anna Kendrick nailed it in a Monique Lhuillier Pre-Fall 2015 blush tulle sleeveless v-neck gown with ruby beading paired with Brian Atwood’s “Tribeca” sandals. CHRISSY TEIGEN Her crying face might be the most embarrassing meme from the night but model Chrissy Teigen radiated in a blush pink beaded gown by Zuhair Murad. DIANE KRUGER Diane Kruger was every inch the ice-maiden in this silver shimmery gown by Emelia Wickstead. We can all agree that everything about this outfit screams “gorgeous!”. FELICITY JONES Possibly our favourite of the evening, Felicity Jones was classic and oh-so chic in a  Dior Haute Couture petrol blue silk faille gown paired with a a Dior clutch. The actress also opted for the satin Tribeca sandals by Brian Atwood (custom-dyed to match her dress). HEIDI KLUM Oh Heidi, why oh why are you so damn stunning? Burberry’s lasting impact on the fashion industry

The story of Burberry’s remarkable turnaround over the past decade has been told often; as a parable for brands that are stuck in the doldrums, or any company looking to take advantage of new market conditions. That shouldn’t diminish, however, what the company has achieved. The figures that have come out of Burberry’s rise from near-brand exile to global domination are truly staggering. Angela Ahrendts took over as Burberry’s CEO in 2006, with the remit of improving Burberry’s brand reputation, which had sank over the previous few years. A year later, Burberry was featured in Interbrand’s top 100 global brands list for the first time, at 95. It has since climbed the rankings to take the 73 spot, one of only seven luxury brands to make the list alongside Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Hermes, Cartier, Prada and Tiffany. From 2010 to now, its rise on the brand charts has been steady and impressive which mirrors its rise on the stock markets. In 2009, Burberry grew 160%; its share value increasing from £230 to £598 (£368). The next year, it grew £555, to £1153. Remarkably, Burberry did not then plateau: its share value at the beginning of this year was over £1500. Over five years, the fashion company has swelled over 550% in value. Two and a half years after taking over at Burberry, Ms. Ahrendts’ vision paid off spectacularly, and those that stuck with the company through a tough 2008 saw amazing returns. Now the company is worth around £6.5 billion, a value which puts it in the top 100 UK share listings, and earned it a place in IG’s (a UK CFD trading company) ten iconic UK shares series. But beyond acting as a lesson for other businesses, what impact has Burberry’s ascension had on the markets, both in fashion […]

Are you a heels or flats kind of girl?

We’ve all been there – standing in front of the full length mirror with a heel on one foot and a flat on the other, pacing back and forth trying to decide which one to pair with our outfit for the evening. If we wear flats, we won’t be as tall but at least we will be comfortable and running for the last train home will be a possibility. On the other hand, if we wear heels, our legs will be elongated and we will have better posture all evening. In the end, we decide to wear heels but carry our flats just in case we need to give our feet a rest towards the end of the night. How many of you can relate? Heels v flats is an endless dilemma – one which the boys will never fully understand – which is why Westfield has released a short film all about it. How clever! Directed by Sean Frank, the Heels v Flats video is a great short film which shows that you can have just as much fun in flats as you can in heels, and we urge you to watch it to see what we – and Westfield – are talking about. What do you guys think of the video? Fellow bloggers – why don’t you share the video with your readers and Twitter followers with the hashtag #heelsvflats to spread the “you can have just as much fun in flats as you can in heels” word? You never know, it might catch on and the likes of Jimmy Choo and Christian Louboutin may be forced to make even more flat dancing shoes! In the meantime, check out the official Westfield blog (Pulse) to get some heels v flats inspiration… Sponsored article

Game of Thrones’ Sophie Turner is the new face of Karen Millen

We showed you pics of the very gorgeous Kit Harington posing for Jimmy Choo a few months ago, but he isn’t the only Game of Thrones star to land a big ad campaign. Sophie Turner, aka Sansa Stark, is the face of Karen Millen’s autumn/winter 2014 ad campaign… and if you ask us, she epitomises the brand as a whole “When I was growing up, I always saw Karen Millen as a resource for women who were a bit older,” the actress said. Since I started going into their stores more over the past few years, I’ve realized it’s for people of all ages, and actually a really cool brand that I can believe in, so I jumped at the chance to be a part of their campaign when they approached me.” Wise choice, Sophie! She was shot by Glen Luchford and styled by Katy England, with cool East London landmarks such as Heron Tower and Spitalfield’s Church as her glorious backdrop. She is also joined in the ad campaigns by Brit models Lara Mullen, Brogan Loftus and Rosie Tapner. Excellent choice, Karen Millen!

Strappy Jimmy Choo sandals, gorgeous silky waves in her hair and seductive red lipstick gave her look the finishing sexy touches.   The Elle US June issue featuring Angelina Jolie may have a sinfully dark edge to it, but the InStyle UK June cover couldn’t be a bigger contrast if it tried. Nicole Kidman is posing pretty for the InStyle UK June issue, and is well and truly making us look forward to summer and all the fabulous hair, make-up and clothing trends that come along with it. Eagle eyed readers might be having a case of déjà vu with the cover image as it’s actually a reprint from the InStyle US March 2014 issue, but it’s perfect for any Brits who didn’t manage to get their hands on the Stateside version in time. Inside the mag, the Aussie actress – and gorgeous face (and legs!) of Jimmy Choo – opens up about everything from love to fashion to being happiest in the country… “I’m very country at heart,” Nicole said. “I have a real desire to be outdoors, a desire for simplicity—a slightly slower, relaxed approach to life. A community, not a big-city feel. That’s what I grew up with, and it’s what I prefer.” So now you know the way to Nicole Kidman’s heart! You can read the rest of the interview – which even includes snippets about love letters from hubby Keith Urban – in the InStyle UK June issue.

Emma Roberts smoulders in Saint Laurent

Looks like Angelina Jolie isn’t the only A-lister to rock Saint Laurent Paris. Emma Roberts looked phenomenal in a black ruffled strapless Saint Laurent dress from the spring/summer 2014 collection as she attended the premiere of Palo Alto in Los Angeles. The actress made sure her look was all about the dress by going sans jewellery (save for an Anita Ko earcuff) and enhancing it with some bold eye make-up, a chic but somewhat dishevelled updo, and Jimmy Choo sandals. Emma Roberts does sugary sweet and age-appropriate well, but this look is definitive proof that she can do sinfully sexy too. Although Emma was a child star and has grown up in front of the cameras, we think her sartorial style has evolved perfectly, getting better and stronger as the years have gone on. We can’t wait to see what she comes out with next!

Ellie Goulding vs. Blake Lively…Who wore Balmain better?

The nifty LBD never fails to impress with its versatile ways:  elevating a simple look to award-worthy heights, and being one of the easiest wardrobe staples to take from day to night; you won’t be stuck for options.  And, impressing the hell out of us this week in their respective LBDs are Ellie Goulding and Blake Lively, who both wore the same Balmain number nearly five years apart! Cast your mind back to September 2009, when Blake Lively gave this sequined number its first outing at the HBO post-Emmy Awards party. Playing up its glistening embellishment and exaggerated shoulders to full effect, Blake paired the dress with Jimmy Choo sandals and emerald hued earrings. Slicked back hair, neutral make-up and a healthy glow topped off her look with perfection. Giving the dress its second outing was Ellie Goulding, who struck a red carpet pose at the L.A. premiere of Divergent, back in March. Opting for open hair and natural make-up, the singer showed off the dress’s plunging neckline with aplomb. Matching Christian Louboutin pumps completed Ellie’s relaxed-glam look. So, who scores the hottest LBD wearer award? Both ladies brought their A-game and looked super-hot in their respective looks, but Blake steals the show for us. The dress’s strong silhouette demands a fuss-free approach to styling and Ellie’s long locks unnecessarily conceal the statement shoulder detail. We’re Team Slicked Back, all the way! Whose look wins for you? [Images: Ellie; Blake]

Steve Madden and Brian Atwood collaborate!

Here’s yet another designer collaboration to get excited about: shoe gurus Steve Madden and Brian Atwood are joining forces! The designers are going into partnership together, and will take over the Brian Atwood and B Brian Atwood intellectual property from previous owners The Jones Group. Without going into too much confusing detail, the move will basically see Steve Madden compete with the luxury greats such as Jimmy Choo, Christian Louboutin and Manolo Blahnik, which is a pretty big leap for the designer. Although Steve Madden Ltd. is worth a very impressive, $1.3billion, the designer is yet to tap into the luxury goods market. Until now! “We are an incredible balance to each other: both entrepreneurs, both passionate about shoes and building brands,” Brian Atwood said. “Steve brings the expertise in successfully operating global fashion brands with a wide bench of industry-leading resources and the talent and vision to optimise B Brian Atwood, while I bring the luxury market and designer experience. “This is the perfect next step for me in achieving my vision for the overall Brian Atwood brand in partnership with Steve. I have spent more than 13 years nurturing my brand with great clarity and now is the time to capitalise on that work.” Brian Atwood will still oversee the design and creative control, but he will use Steve Madden’s team to execute the plans. We can expect to see the first collection launch in spring 2015.

Jenny from the Block has put a smile on our faces thanks to her appearance at the American Idol XIII Top 10 live performance show in Hollywood; it’s amazing what a good celeb outfit can do for us! It accentuates her flawless, God-given curves in a sophisticated manner, and the colour just screams “spring!” at us, which is something we are very excited about given the seemingly never-ending winter we experienced. Michelle Obama’s red Jason Wu Inauguration gown goes on display

We gushed about her wearing it at the start of the year, and also ended the year by naming her one of the best-dressed ladies of 2013 because of it… so it’s safe to say that Michelle Obama’s Jason Wu gown that she wore to the second Inauguration Ball is something pretty special. We aren’t the only ones to gush about the First Lady in the red hot dress though, so it comes as no surprise to learn that it’s going on display at the National Museum of American History for the 100th anniversary of its popular The First Ladies exhibition. Michelle Obama’s dress – along with the red Jimmy Choos – is only going to be there for a year though, so plan your trip to the States carefully if you want to check it out with your very own eyes. Well, 2013 has definitely been an exciting year in this here fashion world, hasn’t it? We’ve had high profile births thanks to the Royal Baby and the Kimye baby, stunning fashion glossy covers, celebrity ad campaigns, Kanye West rants, and lots of fashion House shake-ups among other things. Emma Hill left Mulberry, Marc Jacobs left Louis Vuitton, Tamara Mellon started her own label… yep, 2013 definitely didn’t hold back in terms of drama. We’ve been scratching our heads over this for quite a while, but we’ve finally compiled a list of our top 10 fashion moments from 2013. Let us know what your fave fash mo of the year has been! 1. Prince George’s birth. The birth of the Royal Baby was easily one of the biggest stories in the world, and we waited with baited breath to see what new mummy Kate Middleton would be wearing when she debuted her son – and our future King – to the world. Princess Diana comparisons were made due to the polka dotted nature of her Jenny Packham dress, but we just couldn’t get over how fresh-faced and fabulous she looked after going through labour. What a superhero! 2. Nicolas Ghesquière in at Louis Vuitton. Marc Jacobs made headlines when he announced he would be leaving Louis Vuitton after 16 years at the helm. In other related news, Nicolas Ghesquière, who also sensationally left Balenciaga, was announced as his successor, prompting everyone to rethink what the future of the fashion House might hold. http://youtu.be/WDU7zLAd2-U 3. Jennifer Lawrence at the Oscars. In general. Her jaw-dropping Dior dress which she apparently only tried on the morning of the Oscars, her epic Oscars win, and her comedic trip on the red carpet while collecting her gold man. Kate Middleton debuts darker hair in Temperley London dress at SportsAid Ball

Kate Middleton made another highly anticipated appearance last night, as she attended the SportsAid Ball in London in another killer ensemble. Her public appearances aren’t as frequent as we would like them to be now that she has a little Prince to look after, so we appreciate them even more than usual. Predictably, the Duchess of Cambridge didn’t let us down! She arrived in a stunning lace dress by one of her go-to designers, Temperley London, which sat pretty just above her knees and showcased her slender, enviable pins to the world. She accessorised with a bold red Alexander McQueen clutch bag, and trusty Jimmy Choo heels. The yummy mummy also debuted a brand new slightly darker hair colour (she probably felt the pressure to hit the dye after a rogue grey hair caught the media’s attention…) which is perfect for the new winter season. Gorgeous, as always Kate. And it goes without saying, but the dress has already sold out!

What we really think of Tamara Mellon’s debut fashion collection

When news of Tamara Mellon’s debut fashion collection fell on our ears – yes, she of the sexy Choo shoe empire – we were beyond ecstatic. Glossed to perfection, this business and fashion stalwart won the industry over a very long time, when she was busy ruling the world of fashionable footwear at the helm of Jimmy Choo. But, since her departure from the luxury brand, Tamara hasn’t wandered too far from the fashion world. Launching to complement her autobiography, In My Shoes, Tamara’s eponymous lifestyle collection is inspired by an interestingly creative mix of mirrors and Guy Bourdin, and hits selected luxury retailers from November 2013. Finding the perfect halfway house between trend-centric style and wardrobe staples, Tamara’s collection won’t be an in-then-out affair. In fact, fashion lovers can expect seasonal capsule collections to drop in stores monthly – no more coats in July and bikinis in February! Reflecting her own “sexy but not vulgar Helmut Newton” style, the collection features statement pieces aplenty: a fringed leather midi skirt; gauzy mini dresses with leather undergarments; top-to-toe leopard looks and enough LBDs to warrant leg flashing – even in winter! Check out what we thought of the collection below: What we like: A navy jumpsuit, featuring front slit bottoms, is perfect when styled with statement accessories. Luxe basics, such as billowing blouses and skinny jeans worn with leather calf and over-the-knee boots are ideal wardrobe investments. What we love: A top-to-toe white suit, inspired by Bianca Jagger in her Studio 54 heyday, punctuated with a leopard print bag. Both the updated leopard print trench and bomber jacket are set to become certified style set favourites! What we’re not sure about: Apart from being a little on the nippy side, you’ll need a strong dose of fashion courage to slip into the gauzy […]

Inspirational vs. Inane: Is the lure of the luxury good worth dreaming about?

If recent research is anything to go by, then the luxury goods industry is booming. Booming beyond cultural and financial borders; letting the emerging economies ride the Prada-lined wave of upscale consumerism, and shaking up the belief that the recession has been a turn off for spend-aholics. From Chopard to Chanel Couture and Piaget to Burberry; luxury expenditure hasn’t slowed down, and we’ve got China to thank for that, amongst newer markets such as Malaysia and India. But does the hike in highly priced goods being snapped up justify the production of what we here at MFL HQ like to call The Super Shopper’s Set? Point in case: this week’s super-spend wish list add-ons: Ray Ban’s £2,893 Aviator sunglasses (below) and, wait for it, the £70,000 platinum stilettos by House of Borgezie (pictured above). Items many of us don’t flinch at the idea of dropping a hot £100+ bomb on, and ones that are often our most prized possessions. If you’re not already gawking at these price tags in utter disbelief, we’ll describe the items in a little more detail. Said sunnies aren’t your average hide behinds, but, in fact, rimmed with an £18ct yellow gold frame. Not only that, but, only 1,200 have been put into production, further upping the exclusivity factor. Heels are the holy grail of a woman’s daily get-up (don’t deny it, you loafer-shod liars), and justifying a Jimmy Choo splurge is, often, a necessity. But what if you suddenly wanted a shoedrobe to rival Tamara Ecclestone’s? You’d be spoilt for choice trotting around in the custom-made Cleopatra stilettos, which can be crafted in platinum or 18ct white or yellow gold. We wouldn’t really blame you if the price tag processing part of your brain, as well your overstretched, extremely worried bank account may need to […]

Heidi Klum vs. Rosie Huntington-Whiteley…Who wore Michael Kors better?

Pre-fall dresses are ferociously doing the rounds and this week’s gorgeous duo knocked us for six in a stunning Michael Kors number. Sporting the same look, leggy lovely, Heidi Klum and glossy-locked beauty Rosie Huntington-Whiteley are battling it out in a form-fitting, pre-fall 2013 strapless pencil dress. Showing off to full effect their equally enviable bods, the models put their own spin on the pretty dress. Getting first dibs was Rosie H-W, who attended a dinner hosted by Vogue in honour of Michael Kors, back in April. Styling said dress with a thin black belt and white pumps, Rosie opted to finish the look with tumbling curls and a (knockout) berry-hued pout. But giving Mr. Statham’s beau a run for her money was Heidi Klum, who wore the same dress for an appearance on the America’s Got Talent red carpet in July. Heidi paired the leaf-print dress with Jimmy Choo Jada sandals, statement earrings, a cocktail ring and a metal clasp belt. With both ladies making it near impossible to choose between them (have you seen those never ending pins?!), it’s a challenge. But there can only be one champion in this frock-off, and this week we’re going with…Rosie! Opting to recreate the runway look, Rosie’s look is simple yet striking. It looks ‘put together’ without trying too hard, whereas Heidi’s clashing accessory overload is too much against the print-saturated dress. Without the heavy belt, she would’ve nailed it. Agree with our fash-off verdict? Whose look do you prefer?

First look: Tamara Mellon’s In My Shoes memoir cover!

It’s here! The cover of Tamara Mellon‘s highly anticipated memoir is here and we have the very first look for you! What do you think? Tamara Mellon’s memoir In My Shoes is out on October 3rd and quite frankly, judging from the description, we’re not sure we can wait that long. Lucky we have fashion month to distract us, eh? “In this candid memoir, Tamara Mellon shares her whole larger-than-life story, with candour and detail that has never before been made public,” reads the description on Amazon. “From her troubled childhood and her time as a young editor at Vogue to her partnership with cobbler Jimmy Choo and her very public relationships, she offers a gripping account of the episodes that have made her who she is today. Mellon made a fortune building Jimmy Choo into a billion-dollar fashion brand. She became the prime minister’s trade envoy and was honoured by the Queen with the Order of the British Empire, yet it’s her personal glamour that keeps her an object of global media fascination. Vogue photographed her wedding; Vanity Fair covered her divorce and the criminal trial that followed. Harper’s Bazaar toured her London town house and her New York mansion, right down to the closets. And the Wall Street Journal hinted at the real red meat: the three private equity deals, the relentless battle between “the suits” and “the creatives,” and Mellon’s triumph against a brutally hostile takeover attempt. “In My Shoes is a must read for entrepreneurs, fashionistas, and anyone who loves a juicy true story about sex, drugs, money, power, high heels, and overcoming adversity.” Sounds juicy! You can pre-order your copy on Amazon right now to make sure you’ll get it the very first day it’s out!

Running the gamut of red carpet looks; from chic casual to edgy preppy and directional monochrome, the wow-browed Hollywood darling looked every inch like red carpet royalty! Charging ahead with the promotional rounds for her latest movie, The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones; first up, Lily slipped into a shimmering Bec & Bridge resort 2014 skirt and tee ensemble. Wavy locks, Louboutin pumps and a chunky gold chain completed her look nicely. Moving onto the ‘black carpet’, Lily rocked a striking all-white ensemble at the LA premiere for the film. Wearing a mid-riff baring Cushnie et Ochs resort 2014 dress, Lily completed her look with matching Giuseppe Zanotti pumps and on-trend garnet lips. Bringing a splash of printed fun to the 2013 Teen Choice Awards, Lily opted for a palm-print skirt, paired with a simple black tee and Brian Atwood pumps. A chic updo and cat-eye liner perfectly finished her fun-yet-cool look.
