So we’ve given you the gossip as it happened and we’ve scrutinised the stars’ style to bring you the best and worst dressed – but that’s not all on our sartorial radar. This year’s 68th Golden Globes saw some serious red carpet trends, and as our favourite retailers rush to get their hands on the key pieces and recreations, we’re here to round them up and show you what to look out for in elegant eveningwear this season. Statement scarlett red With Mad Men’s Christina Hendricks and January Jones taking centre stage in statement scarlett gowns by Romona Keveza and Versace respectively, vivid, vibrant red made a va va voom visual on the matching coloured carpet. Emerald green This surprise stand-out trend of the night saw Angelina Jolie, Mila Kunis and Catherine Zeta Jones turn heads in rich emerald green. From Angie’s classic long-sleeved Atelier Versace to Mila’s one-shouldered Vera Wang, this jewel tone shone like no other on Sunday night. Romantic nudes Soft and ethereal, this year’s romantic nudes were a subtle elegance on the red carpet with Scarlett Johansson, Leighton Meester and Dame Helen Mirren all opting for subdued blush tones and second-skin shades. Pretty pinks This year’s Golden Globes played host to a wash of pretty pinks and sweet honeysuckles. From Megan Fox‘s pastel Armani Prive to lady of the night Natalie Portman‘s blush Viktor and Rolf gown, this look was all about celebrating girliness. Serious sparkle Whether on Olivia Wilde‘s frothy Marchesa ballgown or Anne Hathaway‘s figure-skimming Armani Prive piece, statement sparkle was head to toe in these all-or-nothing glittering gowns. Minimalist lines In stark contrast to the girls above, minimalism cut through the carpet as a serious style contender with the likes of Claire Danes, Nicole Kidman and Emma Stone opting for sleek, simple designs. The Risks of Not Having Enough Life Insurance Coverage

Having life insurance is an important milestone in an adult’s life, and one that’s even more relevant when said person starts a family, gets a mortgage, or begins to incur significant financial obligations. That being said, simply getting life insurance is not enough to properly ensure the well-being of your loved ones after your death, you also need to make sure that you have enough coverage for them to be able to keep going without your financial support. Unfortunately, a whopping 90 % of Canadians are underinsured and the majority of them don’t even realize the severity of the issue. Let’s explore this matter. What Does Being Underinsured Mean? Life insurance death benefits aim to provide your loved ones with some sort of financial safety net upon your death. Being underinsured means that your coverage doesn’t fit your needs, whether it’s because the amount of the payout is insufficient or because the policy expires before you die and/or can put the death benefit to good use. How to avoid putting yourself in this position? Buy an Adequate Death Benefit It’s not always easy to know how much money is enough to make a decent death benefit. If you have a fairly basic financial (and family) life, going for a payout that’s roughly equal to 10 to 15 times the policyholder’s income should be good enough. If your financial situation is not exactly average and/or you have an unusually high number of dependents, you should ask for a higher death benefit, and ideally, talk to a financial advisor before making a decision in this regard.  Go for a Policy that Spans your Lifetime This is an issue for term life policies only, for obvious reasons (unlike whole life policies). Since longer policies are obviously more expensive than shorter ones, an individual […]

Every morning I’m woken up by my two girls chatting excitedly and running around the house. It’s the morning rush: get them dressed, breakfast, make sure lunchbags and schoolbags are packed, get them on the schoolbus.  After that, I can actually start my day. Scott and I discuss any urgent points over breakfast. I head to the office and prepare for any outstanding points of discussion and get ready for meetings that will happen later that day or week. Balancing family and personal life with worklife is the always the ultimate challenge no matter how you put it, and this of course goes for all working mums. Erickson Beamon Swarovski Crystal Bib Necklace: Yay or Nay?

A statement necklace is to a fashionista’s wardrobe what a Chanel show (and show-stopping dress) is to Diane Kruger: a crucial necessity. Far removed from its previous decorative evening only label, a statement necklace is now just as well-placed with an office ensemble as it is with an LBD. That said, just as with any statement item, it requires a healthy dose of fashion confidence with a handful of style chutzpah to carry off. Many of you may worry about accessory overkill with only one item of jewellery, or looking too overdone to jump on the tube/subway home; if you’re one of those people, look away now. Let us present to you this mammoth neck adornment from haute jewellery crafter, Erickson Beamon. The Swarovski crystal bib necklace is, well, quite the eye-opener, not to mention the ultimate in attention-grabbing accessories! Maybe not one for statement necklace virgins, we weigh up the pros and cons of landing this beauty around your neck, over a very cosy looking J.Crew knit (natch). YAY Outfit transforming qualities: This goes without saying: you put it on and, just like that, you’re transported to Planet Dello Russo, the land of the street style darling. Whether that’s a good or bad thing, we’ll leave that up to you. Mix of trends and textures: The bib necklace combines an Ethno-Twenties vibe to perfection; the raffia tassels and exquisite multicoloured Swarovski crystals, lapis lazuli and jade tug at our heart (and purse) strings. One piece show: This necklace is so show-stopping all on its own, it cancels out the need for any other form of accessorising. Forget fussing with rings, earrings and bracelets, and just pop this corker on! NAY Price: A mildly (OK, majorly) strangulating (pardon the pun) £1,240 price tag. Caution: You may find it difficult to […]

Crushing on Andrea Riseborough’s chic Mulberry tux

The red carpet has seen a lot of action this week thanks to the MTV EMAs, CFDA awards, and premieres of Twilight: Breaking Dawn Part 2 and Anna Karenina. The celebs really pulled out all the stops for their high-profile appearances these past few days, and while we can’t deny the power of an attention-grabbing dress, we think some of the more understated designs are just as sartorially satisfying. Take Andrea Riseborough’s latest look for example… The super-talented British actress wore a stunning high-waisted Mulberry tux from the new collection while attending an exclusive dinner held by the brand at LA’s swanky Chateau Marmont. She proved that you don’t need to flash the flesh or channel a Disney Princess to make a style statement, as the jacquard detailing of her tux speaks volumes! Andrea toned down the rest of her look by choosing clean and simple accessories (yes that is the brand spanking new Willow clutch from the spring/summer 2013 collection you spy) but added some sparkle by way of some glistening matching blue earrings. Perfection! [Image c/o Mulberry]

Lana Del Rey helps open Mulberry’s first flagship Asian store!

We love supporting our British talent, but why should we get to have all the fun eh? We’re not selfish and like sharing our favourite brands with the world, which is why we’re loving the fact that Mulberry has spread its wings and flown to Singapore to open its first ever Asian flagship store! “Our new store at Mandarin Gallery in Singapore is a significant milestone for Mulberry, this is our first flagship store in Asia,” said Mulberry CEO Bruno Guillon (pictured alongside Lana Del Rey and Emma Hill). “Designed to house the complete collection of men’s and women’s accessories, women’s ready to wear and shoes, the store includes some unique architectural features from the elegant staircase to the silver quartz stone cash desk.” As this is Mulberry we’re talking about, the big opening wasn’t done by halves, which is why the one and only Lana Del Rey was on hand to cut the ribbon and open the store in style. Didn’t she look gorgeous? And speaking of Lana Del Rey… Mulberry has created a special limited edition hot pink Del Rey bag to celebrate the launch; it’s only available to buy in the Singapore flagship store, and retails for £795.

Karl Lagerfeld might not design Keira Knightley’s wedding dress after all…

As soon as we learnt that Keira Knightley and boyfriend James Righton would be tying the knot, our imaginations ran wild with potential wedding dress possibilities. Even though nothing was officially confirmed, we had it in our heads that Karl Lagerfeld would probably be given the honour; after all, if you’re the face of Chanel, why wouldn’t you want to wear a custom gown down the aisle, eh? “Well, that would be pretty generous of him,” Keira said about Kaiser Karl creating her dress. “He’s an incredible designer. Would I say yes? To be honest, I’m working on another film straight after Anna Karenina. “Then, maybe I’ll start thinking about the dress and the guests and the venue. It really depends on what sort of wedding I decide to have – if I go with jeans and t-shirt options, then maybe it wouldn’t be quite right. I haven’t decided on anything yet.” Please don’t walk down the aisle in jeans and a tee Keira. Granted, you look good in pretty much anything, but if you have the chance to wear a bespoke Chanel piece, don’t turn it down! Who else can see little Choupette acting as ring bearer? [Look]

First look at the Somerset by Temperley for John Lewis collection

Back in May we told you about Alice Temperley’s exciting new project – her Somerset by Temperley line with John Lewis – and now it’s time to take a sneaky peek at the collection thanks to British Vogue. We’ve selected four of our favourite looks from the collection which was unveiled at an exclusive fashion show yesterday, but make sure you head to the website to check out each and every one so you can start working on your wish-list. The pieces have a very ‘boho chic’ feel to them, but they’re still versatile enough for everyone to wear. “I think most women want their wardrobe to be versatile; to be stylish without being trendy; to be well-made and hard-working,” the designer said. “Since the recession, customers are spending more on investment pieces – but they want high-street buys to work harder. They want pieces that transcend seasons, and to wear in the city or the country, from the office to a night out.” Spot on, Alice! And if we may say, we think your designs are just that! The 60-piece collection launches in September! Click here for more deets. [Images]

Karlie Kloss sizzles in Stella McCartney

As The Amazing Spider-Man is now officially out in cinemas, we thought we’d revisit some of our favourite looks from the premieres. One look which we couldn’t get out of our heads was Karlie Kloss’s one at the London premiere a couple of weeks ago. The 19-year-old model stunned in a black Stella McCartney dress with cut-out detailing, but unlike Kim Kardashian’s recent outfit by the designer which divided opinions, Karlie’s seems to be a unanimous hit. Karlie’s messy up-do and barely there make-up adds a contemporary and youthful touch to the dress – which has been worn by women twice her age, after all – and also makes it slightly more casual. Had Karlie been the main star of the show (and we could totally see her doing a Rosie Hutington Whiteley and becoming a movie star in the future) some voluminous curls and a flick of eyeliner would be sufficient to complete the transition.

The Three Mul-bears: Mulberry adds baby Carter to its burgeoning brood of arm candy

Almost rhyming with latest Beckham tot and in its own right still a baby, allow us to introduce Carter: the newest member of the heritage English brand, Mulberry. The latest staple-to-be AW11 offering plays up to the typical Mulberry character: functional and aesthetically pleasing with an edge. The Carter bag promises thrice the style potential, appearing in ‘Mini’, ‘Camera Bag’ and ‘Double Handle’ form and has quite possibly won us over – albeit three times. That’s not to say we won’t be optioning on our favourite, but first let’s dissect its design credentials and see what sets the Carter apart from Emma Hill’s previously celebrated creations. Starting with the Carter Double Handle bag; the largest of the trio and a refreshing alternative to the repeated satchel style Mulberry is so famed for, it features the brand new double lock front plaque and twisted leather and chain double handle. Presented in multipurpose Birds Nest (a stone shade), Midnight and Black, were coveting the Midnight Croc Nappa version, and were not the only ones. A-listers Emma Watson and Kirsten Dunst were a sweet vision, spotted occupying their forearms with the Carter Double Handle. Staying true to our fight for luxury bags you can fit your life into, were saying yes to the Double Handle Carter which provides ample storage inches – well worth its ample £995 price tag. Next in line sits the Carter Camera Bag. A downsized version with the same design features and colour variations, except an added extra which is actually the one we’re coveting: the Fox Brown Suede version. The Camera Bag is a fuss-free bag hoarder’s ideal companion – fitting in the essentials, but not as space consuming as the Carter Double Handle. We like how it meets the middle ground perfectly and the adjustable twisted leather […]

British Fashion Awards 2010: what they wore

The fashionistas were out in full force last night as London’s Savoy Hotel and Theatre played host to this year’s British Fashion Awards – and boy did the stars dress to impress. So sit back, relax, and enjoy our pick of the crème de la crème of last night’s best dressed. First up is Naomi Campbell who wore a stunning full length black sheer gown, complete with matching faux fur shrug – all courtesy of close friend Alexander McQueen; an honouring tribute to the late fashion designer who died in February this year. Following in the British fashion footsteps was young Hollywood starlet Emma Roberts in a fun and flirty Julien McDonald party frock – the youthful black and blue glitzy design proved an utterly perfect choice for the little star. Picking up the British Style Award on the night was the ever fashionable Alexa Chung, wearing an SS11 pastel pink Chanel frock with ostrich feather trim – Ms. Chung certainly proved her style credentials were worthy of recognition. Top models were also undoubtedly dressed to perfection, with Lara Stone in Calvin Klein, Claudia Schiffer in Mary Katrantzou and the gorgeous Daisy Lowe in a gothic Elie Saab number – it just goes to show Britain certainly knows how to create some serious sartorial statements. Last but not least, and possibly our favourite of them all, is the beautiful Victoria Beckham wearing one of her own designs to last night’s fashion Oscars – the first of which she’s been nominated for. The highly-praised fashion designer has come a long way since her former Spice Girl days, wouldn’t you agree? So well done ladies, here’s to an super stylish 2010 – all we can say now is roll on next year.

Lunchtime buy: Lipsy Ruched Shoulder Mac

The mac has been back on the fashion radar for some time now, especially since Christopher Bailey took hold of the reigns at Burberry Prorsum and updated the classic Burberry trench for the modern woman. The UK’s golden boy of fashion – and recent MBE recipient – had us instantly counting our pennies with his popular return to London Fashion Week last season, as we hankered after those pastel pink and stone ruched trenches that strutted down the runway passed Emma Watson, Freida Pinto and Victoria Beckham… Sadly enough for us, we never scraped quite enough coins together. But that doesn’t matter anymore, because high street saviour, Lipsy, have created their very own take on the spring must-have. And it’s a snip of the price! The BAFTAs 2009: Back to Black!

So we are now in full movie red carpet full swing. In the run up to the Oscars, the BAFTAs are the place to shine. And did they do it? Did the stars remind us why they are the people we want to be? In a word.. No. It wasn’t an evening of epic disasters, there was nothing so horrific it made me want to cry, well maybe there was one. But there was certainly nothing to capture the imagination. So much black, you wouldn’t have been blamed for thinking that they were all off to a very glamorous funeral. The Hit list Kate Winslet , love or hate her, her stylist certainly knows her stuff. Kate’s Zac Posen number may not have been a fabulous colour but the dress flatters and accentuates those curves. I am particularly loving the vampish neckline. Freida Pinto – Wearing a girly Oscar De La Renta gown, the Slumdog Millionaire star was the shining light in all that black. It fit perfectly, and the pink ruffles were wonderfully feminine. The statement necklace adds true glamour. Amy Adams , Flying the flag for sexy redheads everywhere, Amy Adams is continuing her status as a screen siren. The royal blue gown from RM by Roland Mouret, hugged her shape creating a perfect silhouette. I’m loving the cleverly draped pearls, although the earrings are a little unnecessary. Sharon Stone , In striking red Sharon Stone knows how to work the red carpet. The hair is a little finger in a plug socket, but we’ll forgive her because she really is working her John Galliano dress. Emma Watson – This is not a wow dress, but it is not worthy of a non-entity either. There is something really quite striking about this Temperley number. The embroidered neckline is […]
