The purse-friendly models: Alexa Chung for Vera Moda and Daisy Lowe for Peacocks… why?

Events in fashion often occur in twos. Two Kate’s got married in phenomenal dresses in the same year; two high-end designers recently collaborated with US department store Macy’s, and even fashion week happens twice. Even if I am leaning on exaggeration here, there’s a recent mirror image fashion event that just can’t go ignored: fashion’s darling and retro ambassador, Alexa Chung, being snapped up by Danish high street retailer Vera Moda, and fashion model Daisy Lowe posing for Peacocks. Two very beautiful women, with every designer at their beck and call, vying to get them to grace front row, or even better, walk the runway à la Lowe for Chanel. So why would they choose to ‘downgrade’ and represent the high street? It more than surprised me to learn Chung, who is rarely seen without her trademark mini Chanel bag and sporting nothing less than an offhand, vintage-inspired, thrown-together outfit, took on Vera Moda. She’s not exactly a self-confessed admirer of the retailer’s average designs, and I can’t envisage Chung in its creations, either. But Lowe’s venture into high street modelling is a little more understandable. Playing loyal to blood ties, Lowe is the face of her mother Pearl’s autumn/winter collection – her seventh – for purse-friendly retailer Peacocks, and looks a delectable vision in a range of vintage-inspired dresses. But motherly love aside, the question still arises: why Peacocks when PPQ are on tap for this 5’10” beauty? Quite ironically, in fashion terms, I see a ‘trend’ arising. High street mega-brand, H&M, snapped up world-leading models Freja Beha Erichsen, Anja Rubik and Raquel Zimmermann for their spring/summer and autumn/winter 2011 campaigns. Although appearing as a mutually beneficial alliance, frankly speaking they don’t need each other. The chosen models make mega-bucks from the biggest fashion houses, and H&M has a […]

Paris Fashion Week AW11 round-up

As Paris Fashion Week brought the month-long round of AW11 collections to an end, we’ve scoured through the shows to bring you a quick-fire round-up of our favourites from the City of Light. Take a look at our highlights from the sartorial proceedings in Paris below… Who: Alexander McQueen What: The collection, at times, maintained a softer silhouette than we’re used to from the house of McQueen, but once again Sarah Burton proved she knows what she’s doing with the label. With white tweed skirts, fur accents, opened pleats, grey separates, intricate suits, knitted fur detailing, raw chiffon frills, spray-on leather leggings, robotic bustiers, platform shoes and moulded silhouettes galore – this was yet another truly astounding collection, with McQueen’s signature style printed all over it. And the finale of wedding-esque dresses did nothing to dispel the Kate Middleton rumours. Who: Chanel What: Lagerfeld definitely celebrated International Women’s Day with his autumn/winter collection at Paris Fashion Week, and with raw silhouetted clothing making a profound impact on the catwalk, there was no denying the rough, tough and ready mood of the clothes: an abundance of boiler suits, cropped jackets, pleated trousers, tweed legwarmers, flat brogues and mannish ankle boots. Who: Louis Vuitton What: A quintessential collection of hotel uniform-inspired clothes, with patent leather jackets, sheer skirts exposing suspenders and bottom-revealing cashmere onesies completing the array of rule-breaking get-ups. Surprise appearances from Naomi Campbell and Kate Moss smoking stole the show. Who: Lanvin What: A collection of sophisticated silhouettes, with mustard and caramel draped fabric dresses aplenty. Who: Valentino What: A romantic collection of lace and cashmere, delicate jumpers and A-line dresses. Who: Miu Miu What: A statement collection of signature Sixites shapes, bold colour blocking and sparkly heels galore. Who: Givenchy What: A collection inspired by the Japanese kimono silhouette […]

Christina Hendricks models for Vivienne Westwood

The curvaceous Mad Men actress, Christina Hendricks, has certainly bagged herself a winning high profile fashion campaign with this one, as news breaks that the fiery red head is fronting Vivienne Westwood’s Get A Life Palladium Jewellery Collection. Looking as glamorous as ever, the actress models the latest gems from Westwood’s jewellery line, said to be inspired by nature, pagan symbols and crafted from the precious metal Palladium- an element from the highly sought after platinum family. “Vivienne Westwood has always been one of my favourite designers, so it was a great honour for me to be asked to represent the ‘Get a Life’ Palladium Jewellery Collection,” explains Christina. “I admire that Vivienne uses her designs to inspire change and the pieces are just so wonderful. I love that there are dramatic pieces such as the tiara and the heart necklace as well as more simple pieces such as the acorn earrings. As Palladium is a naturally white metal, the pieces really sparkle under the lights and I cannot wait to wear them on the red carpet.” And it seems Christina’s love for Vivienne is equally reciprocated, with the iconic British fashion designer sharing just as much compassion for the Hollywood star. “Christina is the embodiment of beauty and we were delighted to have been able to involve her with this new jewellery collection. Her style is just so complimentary to my designs,” says Westwood. The collection is now available from Vivienne Westwood’s Conduit Street boutique in London as well as the LA boutique, reports SkyShowbiz. Natalie Portman condemns John Galliano

The shocking video that emerged yesterday claiming to show Christian Dior creative director John Galliano in the same bar where Thursday’s alleged verbal assault took place, in which the designer made anti-Semitic insults towards a couple drinking at a nearby table at the time, hasn’t done Galliano any favours. Black Swan actress Natalie Portman, the face of Dior’s Miss Dior Cherie fragrance, has said in a statement this morning that she’s “deeply shocked and disgusted” that Galliano would use such language. “I am deeply shocked and disgusted by the video of John Galliano’s comments that surfaced,” the Oscar 2011 winner told Vogue UK. “In light of this video, and as an individual who is proud to be Jewish, I will not be associated with Mr Galliano in any way. I hope at the very least, these terrible comments remind us to reflect and act upon combating these still-existing prejudices that are the opposite of all that is beautiful.” Galliano’s fate now rests in the hands of the police, but Dior is sticking by its decision to suspend him until the case is resolved. See the video of Galliano for yourself here.

From Alexander McQueen’s tragic death in February to the frenzy following William and Kate’s royal engagement in November, take a look at the highlights and lowlights that have made the most memorable fashion moments of 2010. Lee Alexander McQueen Following the designers death in February, the fashion world came together to mourn the loss of one of the world’s greatest design talents with a special memorial service at September’s London Fashion Week. His last collection was unveiled without him at a private show just one month after his death – shortly after, Sarah Burton was named as his successor, and unveiled her first solo collection at Paris Fashion Week. Celebrating his life and work, McQueen was last month honoured posthumously with the Outstanding Achievement Award at 2010’s British Fashion Awards. Naomi Campbell She’s had her fair share of controversy, what with being accused of attacking her New York driver – for which she didn’t face charges – and being sued by her former agent for perjury, but Namoi Campbell has had her ups too. Her Fashion for Relief catwalk show reunited the fashion greats for a worthy cause and went down as a storming success, Dolce & Gabbana payed special homage to her at Fashion’s Night Out, and the super picked up the Special Recognition Award at the BFA’s to boot.
