Alexa Chung is one well-dressed lady

The Shockwaves NME awards took place on Wednesday and there were some surprising winners and losers. But one winner we are most proud of is Alexa Chung. Nominated for Best Dressed the gorgeous lady was up against her own boyfriend Alex Turner, Brandon Flowers, Noel Gallagher and Noel Fielding. So not only did she beat her rockstar beau, but also won in an all male category. Well done Alexa! She is of course the most stylish of all those nominees, and well as a leader of the fashion pack a style winner every day. She turned up looking fabulous in a very cute black playsuit with lace ruffle collar and ankle boots. This is a girl who knows how to dress. But one woman who doesn’t know how to is Amy Winehouse, she was awarded the worst dressed award. I can’t say I’m hugely surprised, she has failed to be seen in clothes for a very long time. But it wasn’t just Alexa looking lovely at the awards, a special mention must go to style icon in the making Jaime Winstone who was seen in a fabulous hot pink mini and feathered ruff. Pixie looked as gorgeous as ever, true to her punky style she wore a very sexy pair of tights with a great studded leather jacket and framed handbag. Highlights from the awards will be shown on Channel 4 tonight at 7.30pm. If you want to see the full list of winners check out

Best dressed celeb

Victoria Beckham has been named world’s best dressed celebrity. I’m not sure if I agree. Yes she is a good dresser but I dont know about the world’s best. “She has really settled into her style over the last couple of years. She always dresses well and looks fabulous. Guess who was named the worst…no surprise “Christina Aguilera”. I am actually beginning to understand her style, she’s just expressing herself. Halle Berry made it into the top 5 🙂

British fashion reigns at the Met Ball

For an event that usually champions the best of American fashion, last night’s Met Ball saw a surprising amount of stars wearing gowns from British designers. Perhaps it was a nod towards last night’s honouree, the late Alexander McQueen, who’s life and work was celebrated in an accompanying exhibition, Savage Beauty, or maybe the world hasn’t quite recovered from royal wedding fever just yet – but either way, the Brits ruled the red carpet. Dressing the most celebs was Stella McCartney – also clad in her own label – who decked out an impressive 14 stars in her dresses (save a jumpsuit for Iman), including Rihanna, Naomi Watts, Eva Mendes, Maggie Gyllenhaal and BFFs Gwyneth Paltrow, Kate Hudson, Thandie Newton and Madonna. Also high up on the most-spotted list was, unsurprisingly, Alexander McQueen. Sarah Burton wore a white dress by her own design to honour her friend and mentor, while Daphne Guinness, Naomi Campbell, Gisele, Coco Rocha, Anna Dello Russo, Karen Elson, Racquel Zimmerman and Salma Hayek and Sarah Jessica Parker all paid tribute to the designer. And the list of Brits doesn’t stop there – Erdem dressed Lily Donaldson in a floor-length navy lace gown, Burberry bagged Rosie Huntington-Whiteley to wear a satin rose gown and nude python clutch, and Alexa Chung wore new-season Christopher Kane. Stay tuned for our round-up of the best and worst dressed from last night’s Met Ball.

Kirsten Dunst in Miu Miu

After slating Kirsten Dunst’s sartorial choices not once, but twice, in our round up of last year’s worst dressed celebs, we decided to put our style differences aside and give the girl a second chance – after all, it is the new year. Whilst attending the star-studded bash that was the Cosmopolitan Hotel New Year’s Eve Party in Las Vegas on Friday, the All Good Things actress made a clean, crisp statement in a white Miu Miu frock and black patent pumps – and although we love a good statement party dress, this little number was certainly on par with spring’s minimalistic trend. Other media-savvy critics have branded Kirsten’s look too ‘1960’s nurse’ – though, granted, the sharp high-necked collar does look a little med-school – but we have to say we disagree: the girl rocks this chic puff-sleeved A-line shift. Congrats Kirsten, you’ve proved that less can be more at a party – just keep up the good work.

5 Myths About Quality Clothing That Simply Aren’t True

When it comes to buying fashionable pieces for your closet, there are two routes you can choose from. You can opt for trendy items that come and go, or you can pick quality pieces that will stand the test of time. For those who prefer the latter, it’s not uncommon for them to associate quality with a higher price tag, whether they’re shopping for that little black dress or something as simple as buying leggings. The more cash you drop on an article of clothing, the greater the expectation that it should last you a lifetime. Contrary to popular belief, though, quality does not necessarily have to mean spending hundreds of dollars on a single item. This may be difficult to believe in a world where shoppers are surrounded by fast fashion. But with the right mindset and strategy, it is possible to find well-made pieces at a bargain. With that said, it’s time to finally debunk some common myths when it comes to high-quality fashion. More Expensive Items Are Always of Higher Quality While the saying “you get what you pay for” does have some truth to it, that’s not to say that you’ll always have to splurge to find something that lasts more than a couple of wears. More often than not, luxury items are priced much higher than they’re actually worth to account for the costs of promoting them. The high price tag can also be due to the brand’s perceived value, rather than being based purely on material and labor costs. It is not true that if you pay more than you should have a really high-quality one, for example, you can pay a reasonable price for Korean Fashion clothes and accessories and have a really good quality clothes. It is also not true that a higher price tag […]

Throw the Perfect BBQ this Summer Fit for a Royal

With summer in full swing and the lasting effects of a breath-taking royal wedding still dwindling, it’s no wonder we’re all ready to demurely sip glasses of fizz whilst trying not to get sauce from our burgers down our skirts. Yes, barbeque season has arrived and we’re here to tell you how to put that regal spin on your gathering that’ll have you guests feeling like dukes and duchesses. From food and drink down to dress code, you might even find the second in line to the throne knocking on your door asking for an invite. Prepare for All Weathers You don’t want your party to be royally ruined before it’s even started. In the UK, you can never be certain what the weather will do. By offering some coverage in case of rain, your summer BBQ can continue without interruption. Regardless of rain or shine, you’ll want to have your sun umbrella out to offer shade to those who would prefer it. Ideal for younger guests so they’re protected from harmful rays, it also offers a great station for huddling under whilst a raincloud passes in the case of light summer showers. Buying a gazebo is also a fantastic precaution. Not only does it make for a great focal point to the party, reminiscent of the gigantic food tents at all those garden parties at Buckingham Palace. It also provides some cover. Whether or not the rain shows up, costing between £25 and £175, gazebos are great for keeping the food table under cover and adding another level to your garden dynamic. Worst case scenario, if bad weather persists, being prepared to migrate indoors can end up being the best way to save a party. To avoid stress, cater for this outcome in advance. Clear the room you want […]

Is anyone really fit to replace Anna Wintour?

You might consider our proposition insane, if somewhat impossible, but it could totally happen. If the “new” age for women retiring in the UK is realistically lingering in the seventies, then Anna Wintour isn’t too far off. At 64, the impeccably bobbed, Manolo-clad Editor-in-Chief of American Vogue faultlessly oozes that polished glamour so many of us can only dream of inhaling from the printer-fresh pages of our monthly subscription Yet, what begins must end, and recent rumours speculating Wintour’s retirement have got the style set buzz-chatting – some with confusion, others with a glimmer of excitement at whom might be deemed worthy to take the helm of the world’s grandest fashion institution. So, instead of suffering sleepless, sweaty nights figuring out what will happen to the physical impression Anna has left on her regular FROW spot – if she ever decides to hang up that Prada fur coat – we’ve gathered our heavy-hearted thoughts and picked out five possible replacements. Yes, human replacements, not some page-flicking robot with impossible-to-attain hair. Having said that, who knows what the future holds? The WAG-turned-wardrobe queen: Victoria Beckham Churning out winning runway ensemble, season-on-season, VB knows a thing or two about what makes winning fashion editorial content. It doesn’t hurt that she’s permanently well-dressed, backed up by a good-looking brood and a super-successful, hunk-in-pants husband. Her consistency, business-meet-fashion discipline and taste for luxury could easily put her in the pool of potentials. Carries comes to life: Sarah Jessica Parker Hey, hey! Wintour’s bestie (they enjoy “private dinners” on the regular), Sarah Jessica Parker, is possibly the closest suspect we’ll get to having an A-lister take the reigns after Anna. Although the actress has denied all rumours about replacing the powerful editor-in-chief, they do share a love for fashion fundraisers, Manolos and pretty dresses. Kate Boss. Not Moss: She’s […]

Jessica Biel is darling in Dior for Guggenheim International Gala

As jealous as we may be that she’s married to Hollywood heartthrob Justin Timberlake and we’re not, there’s no denying that Jessica Biel is one seriously hot and stylish lady. Jessica Biel attended the Guggenheim International Gala at the Guggenheim Museum in New York last night, and opted to wear a gorgeous Christian Dior Couture spring/summer 2013 dress for the occasion. The stars have been wearing a lot of Dior these past few days – some slightly better than others – but we think Mrs Timberlake gets top marks for her seductively simple ensemble. As with all Jessica Biel red carpet looks though, it was all about the attention to detail; the Dior droplet earrings that complemented the colours in her dress were to die for, as was her perfect smoky eye make-up. Oh and did we mention that we have total hair envy, too?

Red Valentino tulle-covered trench coat: Yay or Nay?

Is it a trench? Is it a dress? What is it?! After witnessing a not so positive take on hybrid dressing, courtesy of a certain Cyrus, we were sceptical about the two-in-one approach to our wardrobes. Then, along came this little number from Red Valentino, and the topic was up for discussion again. Putting a pretty, feminine twist on the perennially chic cover up, the Red Valentino printed tulle-covered cotton-twill trench coat is a cheat’s way to looking party fabulous in five minutes – right out of the office! But is it worth the investment? Is the style shortcut justified? Check out the reasons we’re saying yes and no (in the same breath) to the Red Valentino trench below: Yay Coat-dress: Championing Kate Middleton’s eternally favourite (and easy) look, you’ll be killing two wardrobe needs with one killer coat. Need we say more? Subtle detail: The jewel motif splashed across the chest isn’t overpowering, and the dainty, Swiss-dot tulle overlay gives the trench day-to-night appeal. Classic colour: Crafted in breathable cotton-twill, the trench comes in a classic shade of beige, possibly satiating your need for the dearer version over at Burbz! Nay Limited by trend: Its lady-like appeal could possibly limit the wear you get out of this trench, confining it to the days for when your inner Carrie needs an outing. Price: At £750, it’s not exactly as easy on the pocket as it is on the eye! Take a long, hard look at your wardrobe before deciding to take the plunge, and consider if the trench will work with it. After all, it’s a classic cover up you’re going to want to keep reaching for. Not universally flattering: Given the waist-cinching qualities of the velvet belt are magical, a full pleated skirt isn’t flattering for everyone’s shape – […]

Nicole Richie vs. Kourtney Kardashian…Who wore Stella McCartney better?

Although monochrome originally set our hearts aflutter for spring/summer 2013, when our peepers landed on this week’s fash-off contestants, we once again gasped in awe! The sheer beauty of a vertical zebra crossing-esque print in a dress is enough to get the dialogue going at MFL HQ, and that’s why we’ve picked Nicole Richie and not-far-from-a-camera Kourtney Kardashian as this week’s Who Wore it Best candidates, in a stunning, striped Stella McCartney number. First up, Nicole Richie took to the front row at Paris Fashion Week back in March, when she wore the striped A-line dress to the Stella McCartney autumn/winter 2013 show. Looking radiant as ever; Nicole completed her look with a relaxed shoulder-length bob and simple black pumps. But catching up in the style race was Kourtney Kardashian, who hasn’t been on our style radar for the right reasons, lately! Kourtney attended the extravagant, Alice In Wonderland themed 16th birthday bash for fellow sibling, Kylie Jenner, in August, sporting said dress. Accessorising with a fancy featured headpiece, fingerless gloves (very Kaiser Karl) and cross-strap platform heels, she rounded the look off with a bright red lip. With such a bold dress, and two very different looks, it’s a tough one to choose between this week, but we’re going to go with Nicole on this one! We get it: Kourtney’s channelling an upscale Tweedledee/dum in a dress (sorry, Kourt!), but it’s literally too fancy dress for us. Skip the OTT gloves and headpiece, and she’s got a winner on her hands (pardon the pun). Nicole’s fuss-free styling and glossy locks win by a strong style mile. Agree with our verdict? Tell us your thoughts below. [Images: Nicole; Kourtney]

The must-have list for fashionable mums-to-be!

We’ve had a whole host of recent celebrity pregnancies and newbie mums who have brought a whole new meaning to ‘yummy mummy.’ Take Beyoncé, for example, who looked every inch the princess of pregnancy while she was expecting daughter Blue Ivy. Her maternity style was just as mind-blowing as her bootylicious stage outfits – OK, maybe not as eccentric, but who can forget that orange Lanvin gown at the 2011 VMA’s and all the lustworthy print and heels she wore during her pregnancy! Hilary Duff is another example of ‘maternity chic’ at it’s best, as the 24-year-old starlet was seen in nothing less than bright blazers, killer heels and snap-worthy sunglasses throughout her pregnancy with baby Luca! Well, for all you expectant mums out there, pick up a style tip or two from your A-list bump-carrying counterparts, and check out the fabulous maternity range at Isabella Oliver – Kristin Cavallari, pictured above in the Ruched Tank Dress, is a big fan! Who wore it best? Katie Holmes vs Lucy Liu in Azzedine Alaïa

We’ll level with you – we’re kind of obsessed with lace. It’s so feminine and flirty that we can’t resist anything with even a hint of the fabric on it. So when we saw this short and sweet Azzedine Alaïa dress on not one but two celebs this week we practically sang with joy. And naturally, the question fell to this: how did these starlets style it, and who wore the trend first? Katie Holmes was the most recent to don the dress to the MTV Video Music Awards last week. The actress accessorised with a suede tan pair of Proenza Schouler lace-up ankle boots, which though we love, we think make her legs look a bit stumpy on this occasion. Still, we’re still lusting over her luxurious tresses and simple but efficient make-up. However, Charlie’s Angels actress Lucy Liu wore the Alaïa dress back in July to a movie screening in New York. She teamed her lace number with elegant nude pumps featuring peep-toe detail, and we love her addition of a popping berry clutch to brighten up the dark dress. But whose look are you loving? Katie’s cute ‘n’ cool style, or Lucy’s lady-like elegance? Cast your votes below! [poll id=”192″]

Rihanna blends into the background in white Max Azria

We thought Rihanna was back in the zone after her recent Sideshow Bob bungle, but she left us a little disappointed us at the Billboard Awards on Sunday in her all-white ensemble which faded into the matching carpet. Rihanna chose a crisp white Max Azria suit teamed with a matching plunging blouse before her performance with Britney at the awards, and whilst we love the masculine tailoring on the singer, we think she could’ve done with a splash of colour. Her nude Louboutin pumps are chic, but we’d have preferred to see fierce statement heels to balance her fiery red hair. This is the girl that can wear Marchesa’s wow-ruffles and see-through Elie Saab, after all. But despite her fashion fail, we can’t fault her incredible performance with the refreshed Britney Spears. Pillow fights and pole dancing? Now that’s a party! Would you ever opt for an all white suit? Or are you scared of the stains that loom? [poll id=”122″]

Fashion Police: Katy Perry gets it all wrong at the Logies

Since marrying the always-stylish Russell Brand, we noticed some changes in Katy Perry’s wardrobe. She seemed to be slowly moving away from flesh-bearing latex and kooky dresses, and at recent red carpet events she’s looked, dare we say it, demure. And we approved. However, last night she blew all her hard work and stepped out on the red carpet of the Logie Awards in Melbourne, Australia, in this disasterous outfit. Whilst she’s covering up more than enough flesh (remember Katy, legs or boobs, never both), she’s still erring on the wrong side of quirky (also known as ‘insane’).   The emerald green looks fab on Katy, but we hate the Le Violon d’Ingres print and the dated, unflattering puff-shoulder silhouette should have stayed in the where it belonged in the Eighties. Accessorising with a statement necklace, garish red lips and opaque tights made for a haphazard look that not even someone as hot at Katy could pull off.  We will give her points for her footwear though – those blue shoes are gorgeous. Are you a fan of Katy’s look? [poll id=”101″]

Golden Globes 2011: trend round-up

So we’ve given you the gossip as it happened and we’ve scrutinised the stars’ style to bring you the best and worst dressed – but that’s not all on our sartorial radar. This year’s 68th Golden Globes saw some serious red carpet trends, and as our favourite retailers rush to get their hands on the key pieces and recreations, we’re here to round them up and show you what to look out for in elegant eveningwear this season. Statement scarlett red With Mad Men’s Christina Hendricks and January Jones taking centre stage in statement scarlett gowns by Romona Keveza and Versace respectively, vivid, vibrant red made a va va voom visual on the matching coloured carpet. Emerald green This surprise stand-out trend of the night saw Angelina Jolie, Mila Kunis and Catherine Zeta Jones turn heads in rich emerald green. From Angie’s classic long-sleeved Atelier Versace to Mila’s one-shouldered Vera Wang, this jewel tone shone like no other on Sunday night. Romantic nudes Soft and ethereal, this year’s romantic nudes were a subtle elegance on the red carpet with Scarlett Johansson, Leighton Meester and Dame Helen Mirren all opting for subdued blush tones and second-skin shades. Pretty pinks This year’s Golden Globes played host to a wash of pretty pinks and sweet honeysuckles. From Megan Fox‘s pastel Armani Prive to lady of the night Natalie Portman‘s blush Viktor and Rolf gown, this look was all about celebrating girliness. Serious sparkle Whether on Olivia Wilde‘s frothy Marchesa ballgown or Anne Hathaway‘s figure-skimming Armani Prive piece, statement sparkle was head to toe in these all-or-nothing glittering gowns. Minimalist lines In stark contrast to the girls above, minimalism cut through the carpet as a serious style contender with the likes of Claire Danes, Nicole Kidman and Emma Stone opting for sleek, simple designs. The Men of Glastonbury 2009

Since Kate Moss donned her little hot-pants outfit to the UK’s favourite music event – Glastonbury – a few years ago, festival goers have treated the occasion like a bizarre, mud-filled catwalk – parading their finest (and often loudest) wardrobes to the masses. The best (or maybe worst) thing about this? There are no rules. But let’s not limit this to the girls. And having said that, to the festival crowd themselves. Performers after all, are under the scrutiny of the fields of fashionistas, fans and cameras, and the men are no exception. Here’s a few that we’ve picked out: Pete Doherty – Dressed in his faithful trilby hat, Pete chose a military/old band style top in a black and gold jersey material for his performance on The Other Stage. Thumbs up to Pete for the casual take on this formal theme. Although we’re not so sure about the navy blue polo shirt underneath, luckily Pete can pull off just about anything without it looking out of the ordinary.
