New Year Resolutions from the Beauty Experts

If you’re still going strong on your New Year’s resolutions, then congratulations. Most can be arduous and, frankly, rather boring. Especially if they’re based on a promise to a) eat less or b) do more exercise. So to help, we’ve rounded up some of the most knowledgeable people in hair and beauty to share their resolutions and give you some you can stick to. Dr. Jeannette Graf Dermatologist and leading skin science expert Mine is to continue my regular exercise routine. A healthy lifestyle and being happy as happiness is key. Frank Barbosa Celebrity stylist and colourist and owner of Frank Antonio Hair and Makeup in Newport, Rhode Island. Frank has styled hair on movies including Sex and the City 2 and Bride Wars I think your beauty resolution should be ‘I will firmly grip the iron and curl and wave’. A beautiful healthy wave in your hair is the trend this year. Also, the second resolution, which is much more important than the first, is to let a colourist lead you in the direction of a hair colour that suits you, not someone else. My tip is that a good colourist will make your skin tone look fabulous. It’s all about the skin, not the hair in hair colouring. Go figure. Happy New Year and here’s to your beauty resolutions. Eliut Rivera Owner of Salon Eliut Rivera, New York My advice for a resolution for 2010 is to seek advice from beauty professionals on how to style your own hair to the best of your ability. Also pay attention to how your stylist is styling your hair in order to look your best when duplicating the same style at home. Don’t hesitate to ask a stylist or make-up artist what they feel the best products for your hair or […]

It’s hats not shoes for Manolo Blahnik

Manolo Blahnik doesn’t think shoes are important. The famous footwear designer – who rose to fame when his exclusive shoes were worn by fashion-forward character Carrie Bradshaw in US TV show ‘Sex and the City’ – thinks other accessories are far more important than footwear. He said: “Are shoes so important? Really? If I was a woman, I would be dressed in the same thing for a month and just change my hat and gloves. Maybe my shoes too… but really, it’s jewels that change an outfit. And I do love gloves. And I adore hats.” The 66-year-old style icon added can’t get to grips with some of the latest footwear fashions.

Elizabeth Taylor’s hat order

The Hollywood legend recently placed the order with royal milliner Philip Treacy, after she was impressed with his quick response to her fashion query. Treacy revealed: ‘Her assistant called me up asking for hair pin and I sent her a message back asking if she wanted a hat to go with it. It turns out that she did – she wanted lots of them!’ Taylor asked the hat creator to meet her at a London hotel so he could show off his designs – and while he picked hats for her to wear, the 81-year-old screen star entertained him with songs and cocktails. Treacy explained: ‘We spent two evenings at her suite at The Dorchester hotel fitting them, looking in the mirror. She even sang a song for us and ordered us cocktails. She doesn’t need an excuse to buy that many, she invented celebrity extravagance.’

Bruno: The Movie is the fashion film of the year

So last year there was Sex And The City, and right now we get our weekly fix of Gossip Girl and Stylista. But we want something more! Thankfully, Sacha Baron Cohen aka Borat/Ali G, has come to our rescue in his new guise as fashion reporter Bruno. The film hit the headlines during the Milan and Paris Spring/Summer 09 catwalks back in October 2008, as Bruno ran riot round the fashion weeks. One incident included him sucking on tampons during the Stella McCartney show and making a general nuisance of himself, as well as storming the Iceberg catwalk and sneaking into the backstage areas with fake passes dressed in a Velcro jumpsuit. These antics split the fashion world, some brandishing it a disgrace whilst others seeing the funny side.

Temperley London Golden Apple Bag

We’ve seen our fair share of bizarrely shaped bags adorning the arms of celebrities of late. SJP started the ball rolling with her Timmy Woods Eiffel Tower bag in the Sex and the City movie. Then, last month Lily Allen stepped out with a rather ingenious Russian doll bag by Chanel. But hide the credit card cards girls, for I have found the fairest of them all. Alice Temperley has outdone herself with this bewitching golden apple box bag. The clip fastening bag, made from mock-croc patterned leather, has beautiful detailing including a crinkled golden leaf. It’s perfect for the whimsy of this summer’s fashion. Who said you were too old for fairytales? £495 available at brownsfashion.com

The season of sequins!

I’ve suddenly come over all festive. I cannot seem to get Mariah Carey’s ‘All I want for Christmas’ out of my head, I’ve recently found myself munching on mince pies, and what with the incessant, obligatory Christmas sofa adverts that have been tormenting me for around two months now, this can all only add up to one thing: the party season is well and truly upon us!

Patricia Field: The Stylist that can’t style herself…

As much as I love Patricia Field, she is one stylist (after Sex and the City would not have been the same without her influence and she consistently makes her clients look nothing short of fabulous. But when it comes to her own personal style, she gets it SO wrong. Her outfit choices are ill-fitting and the colours often clash, and not in a quirky, looks cool kind of way.

Patricia Field for ASOS

I love Patricia Field. As costume designer for the hit series Sex and the City, Field proved to be an integral component to the show and her creativity was an inspiration. She was responsible for many of the trends that dominated fashion during the time that women all over were gripped by Carrie and Big’s never ending love affair and I was super excited to hear that she would be creating an affordable line for none other than ASOS. Sadly the collection is nothing to write home about but there is one key piece that is worth mentioning. Both quirky and elegant, these Tri Coloured Mule Sandals, £125 definitely steal the spotlight.

The Shirt Dress

My current obsession? Shirt dresses. If smocks make you well…. appear to be in the early stages of pregnancy and the maxi dress defeats the purpose of showing off your stunning legs…then the shirt dress is a fantastic alternative. In extremely hot temperatures the light weight fabric and short hemline proves to be practically life saving. Different interpretations compliment various body shapes. For those that are blessed with a lean trim figure opt for a more fitted style such as this Kimberly shirt dress by Elie Tahari, $398. If you want to draw attention away from the mid region then go for an oversized version…..think Carrie in that iconic Sex and the City episode when she leaves Big’s home in his shirt and belt. Trust me it’s a perfect ensemble when looking for an outfit to cover up certain areas. Intermix also has a varied selection of this summer staple and Gap has a roll up sleeve shirtdress on sale at $14.99 down from $59.50 that is perfect for casual day wear…..but be warned its selling fast!

Back to business…

Wow, hasn’t this holiday break gone by in a flash! It was quick, but relaxing, and I spent most of it, eating, drinking and getting my fashion fix from re-runs of Sex and the City. Oh how I do miss Carrie’s style…..many can criticise but she is and will always be a style icon in my eyes. And to another icon of style, Kate Moss, – whom I still think doesn’t beat Carrie in the style stakes – the New Year has only just begun and Moss is already stealing the headlines with her possible marriage to Pete Doherty. Apparently the two skinny jean lovers didn’t tie the knot but instead engaged in a Buddhist ceremony. Anyway back to business, as fashion week will soon be upon us, I thought I’d kick of with some dates for the big players Couture Week: 22nd , 25th January 2007 New York: 2nd , 9th February 2007 London: 12th -16th February 2007 Milan: 17th February – 25th February 2007 Paris: 25th February , 5th March 2007 In addition Glasgow will be holding their fashion week from the 28th March , 31st March 2007.

What to Do Before Seeking Compensation for Child Abuse

Child abuse is one of the most traumatic experiences any person can go through. It sticks with you for all your life, and closure can only come if justice is served. Now, there are many ways to settle child abuse cases.  But typically, some compensation is necessary as part of the process. In this guide, you will learn how to go about this in the most professional way possible. What to Do If You’ve Been Abused There are three crucial steps that guardians of victims of child abuse should take once they discover the crime.  First, you must get in touch with a legal advisor as soon as possible. Make sure that this is a person who has previous experience in dealing with child abuse cases and is sensitive enough to your plight.  Secondly, you may also want to report the matter to the police. It’s understandable, though if you don’t feel like doing it right away. But if you are planning on getting child abuse compensation in the future, the police will have to be involved in one way or another.  Finally, see a doctor. Victims of child abuse can suffer both physical and emotional injuries. They will need the help of a medical practitioner to overcome the emotional and physical trauma they have suffered. Prepare a File with All Records  It is important to fully document all events to present to a judge. If there were specific dates when the abuse occurred, highlight them. Do not forget to indicate in detail the type of abuse and how it happened.  This can be a very difficult process. It often feels like the victim is reliving that experience again. But it is nonetheless a huge part of the justice recourse. Try to also gather some evidence if you can.  For […]

Meghan Markle’s Givenchy Wedding Dress Was Absolutely Stunning

It was the moment we’ve been waiting for, for months. On Saturday afternoon, we finally got to see Meghan’s (now known as the Duchess of Sussex) wedding dress and while the style (simple, classic and sophisticated) was exactly what we expected, the designer definitely was not. With the majority of royal fans betting on Ralph & Russo or Erdem as the most obvious choice, the honour of creating one of the most anticipated wedding dresses of all time went to British designer Clare Waight Keller for Givenchy. Made from ivory silk, the beauty of the three-quarter inch sleeved gown lay in it’s bateau neckline which softened the look. The simplicity of the dress was accentuated not only by a 16.5 foot silk tulle veille with a hand-embroidered flower representing each of the 53 Commonwealth countries but also with Queen Mary’s diamond bandeau tiara, which was borrowed from the Queen. While some were underwhelmed with Meghan’s wedding dress, we definitely weren’t. It was a perfect choice and complimented the bride’s personal aesthetic beautifully. Equally as stunning was her second wedding dress which she changed into for the evening reception at Frogmore House. Designed by Stella McCartney, the halterneck dress made from silk crepe was slightly sexier but also timeless. Pairing her second wedding dress with custom satin heels by Aquazurra, Meghan paid a touching tribute to Princess Diana by wearing her Asprey Aquamarine ring. It’s a thumbs up from us for both dresses, however if we had to choose, we’d probably opt for Stella McCartney as our favourite, although having said that, it really was pretty hard to decide. Are you loving both dresses? Which was your fave?

Everything You’ll Need To Watch The Royal Wedding 2018!

The Royal Wedding is fast approaching and we couldn’t be more excited! If like us, you intend on watching Harry and Meghan tie the knot away from the comfort of your sofa (ideally at a street party) you’re going to need certain essentials to celebrate outdoors, stress-free. From a stylish umbrella to a portable charger, avoid getting caught out at the last-minute and ensure you’re fully equipped with the following must-have items. 1. Taking into consideration the unpredictability of the British weather, an umbrella is non-negotiable. But this isn’t just any old brolly. Loved by the Royal Family, Fulton’s Birdcage Umbrella is not only capable of fending off the heaviest of showers but with a transparent dome, coupled with a black trim and handle, it’s super stylish too. Birdcage umbrella available at Fulton Umbrellas. 2. While it’d be lovely to don a pair of sexy heels for the celebrations, the truth is, it’s far from practical. Instead opt for comfy trainers. But we’re not recommending just any old pair of trainers. Ted Baker’s statement making Astrina ruffle trainers are incredibly comfortable and look amazing. With cute ruffles decorating the heel as well as subtle bronze details, they’re smart enough to dress up any outfit. Astrina ruffle detail trousers available at Ted Baker.   3.  It’s no secret that Meghan Markle is a fan of Scottish luxury brand Strathberry. The bride-to-be has been spotted carrying their arm candy on a number of occasions. Pay tribute in your own small way by carrying your essentials in their East/West mini cross body bag, as spotted on Meghan. Due to the Meghan Markle effect it’s been out of stock for a while, but it’s finally back. East/West Mini in bottle green available at Strathberry. 4. Romantic Outfits For Cosy Winter Evenings

Winter evenings can be cold, bleak and sometimes rainy; it is too easy to put your romance life on hibernation mode during winter. However, it is important to keep date nights frequent to keep the fire burning between you and your partner, especially or even if you have been together for a long time. As the winter chill grows stronger, an adjustment to our wardrobes is essential. A little extra care to styling your outfits is much needed to avoid looking like Michelin Man or a marshmallow when you start layering your clothes. There are many ways for you to create romantic outfits that are cosy and warm without compromising your feminine, edgy, classic or bohemian style. Cool chic Kendall Jenner is the epitome of cool these days and for good reasons—her off-catwalk looks are relatable and can be recreated. This black-and-white ensemble is chic enough for a dinner at a fancy restaurant but casual enough for a movie after. Layer a bodycon sweater dress under a thin duster coat for the right amount of warmth—finish the look with white trainers and a great classic bag. Black or White If you are not for constrictive dresses, take out your white summer dress (this will brighten up your face) and wear a pair of tights underneath it to keep your legs warm. Slip on a pair of ankle boots and pull on a great trench coat, ala Grace Atwood, before you head out for a romantic dinner with your significant other. If the very idea of pulling anything out of your summer closet puts you off, then go for a leather black coat – pair it with patterned trousers and classic oxford shoes for a chic look! Opposites attract Rach Parcell showed that the juxtaposition of black and pink is beautiful. […]

Surprising Facts About Shaving Most Men Don’t Know

For the modern man, shaving is so common that more than a few aspects are taken for granted or completely unknown.  There is an actual art of shaving that separates those who host a good, clean shave and those, despite lots of practice, have a lot to learn about the hygienic pastime. Realize It Takes Time Shaving is a marathon and not a race.  Actually, rushing through the experience is a great way to abuse your face and attract cuts.  However, it’s not the act of shaving alone that warrants time well spent, it’s prepping the face and treating it afterwards that distinguishes a great shave from a shoddy one. Start by washing with a facial cleanser to soften the protein in the hair.  Search for a cleanser that is gentle rather than harsh on the skin.  You don’t want to strip the hair of essential oils that facilitate a great shave.  Next, lather your face with a cream or gel and let it sit for a few minutes.  The longer the gel sits on the face, the better the shave, though it’s not expected you stand and wait over five minutes or more. Use the Right Utensils Your grandfather is likely to use a brush rather than his fingers to apply the shaving cream or gel.  Perhaps you thought he does this to pay tribute to traditional barber techniques, yet it actually makes for a better outcome.  A well-made brush pushes the cream into the hair, which makes it much easier to shave, allowing the razor to glide more easily along the skin’s surface.  A great brush raises the hair and gets the cream close to the skin, between the hairs. One Blade Is Enough Contrary to the evolution of razors, one blade is more than enough to produce a […]

The Met Gala 2014: The best dressed!

All the big names in fashion, film, and music gathered at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City last night, for the highly anticipated Met Gala! This year, the museum was honouring Charles James, and the dress-code was a very simple (albeit slightly “boring” according to Marc Jacobs) “white tie and decorations”. Anyone familiar with the work of Charles James would know that elegant eveningwear was his thing, so they wouldn’t have gone wrong by donning the finest couture pieces with some elegant jewels. There were many ladies who absolutely nailed their looks, while some probably should have stayed home. Stella McCartney had a big moment on the red carpet, dressing the likes of Rihanna and Reese Witherspoon so flawlesslessly for the event, in two very different but equally stunning dresses. Rihanna went for her signature sexy look, while Reese was a vintage glamour goddess. Selena Gomez also wowed on the red carpet for us, looking very mature for just 21 years old in a bold deep purple Diane von Furstenberg dress. We also love how Gossip Girl stars Blake Lively and Leighton Meester were reunited at the Met Gala – they both looked amazing in  their respective Gucci Premiere and Emilio Pucci dresses. Not all of the ladies went for full-length or ballgown dresses (like Hayden Panettiere who looked like a Princess!) though – Solange Knowles and Lena Dunham were just two of the stars who went for something a little bit shorter. The impact definitely wasn’t lost though. Here are our best dressed celebs from last night’s Met Gala. Let us know who gets your vote in the comments below. Rihanna shows her support for Balmain at Paris Fashion Week

Rihanna is officially in the city of love for Paris Fashion Week, and the new face of Balmain made sure she supported Olivier Rousteing by attending the autumn/winter 2014 show in a fierce pre-fall 2014 ensemble. She chose a typically Ri Ri look that came in an army inspired shade of khaki, and made sure she flashed some of her perfect pins at the same time too. This look oozed sexy sophistication in a way that only Rihanna knows how! And it looks like she has been taking hair styling tips from her good pal Katy Perry. KP rocked the Cleopatra hairdo at the BRIT Awards last week, and now Rihanna has taken it upon herself to try out the daring air trend too. We definitely think she pulled it off – we’ll have a tough time telling you who we think rocked it better though. Let’s call it a tie and leave it at that! [Image]
