MTV Movie Awards 2008: The Best Of The Gold Carpet

Anyone else tired of the glam outfits that starlets are opting for this season? There is a major fascination at the moment with pretty, romantic mini and one shouldered dresses. Nice but…boring. Which is probably why amongst a sea of predictable outfits, it was SJP and Charlize Theron that stood out for me at yesterday’s MTV movie awards. Both actresses donned elegant looks with an edge.

Halloween Special: Fashionistas as Vamps

This is a guest post by Valerie Stivers , freelance journalist and author of the novel Blood is the new Black. Her work has appeared in Time Out New York, Blender, Elle and various other fashion magazines. There’s a fun and easy way to see for yourself that vampirism is fashionable. Take a tube of red paint and a small paintbrush, and paint fangs on nearly any ad from any fashion magazine. Vogue, Marie Claire, Elle…it doesn’t matter. The fangs will look perfectly natural. When I first started writing Blood is the New Black, I saved tear-outs from magazines of models that looked particularly dead—or undead as the case may be—but then I stopped, because there were so many there was hardly a point.

She’s been the “dahhling of fashion ever since she hit our screens almost 10 years ago. Her on-off love affair (which the Daily Mail has confirmed is fully ON in the new movie. Yes Carrie finally gets married to Big in what has to be the most decadent of weddings) with Big had us hooked but not as much as her outfits. Reviews: Falling Out of Fashion

There’s a certain familiar formula that’s become de rigueur in the rarified niche of roman a chefs about the fashion industry. You’ve seen it before: the long suffering assistant is forced to toil over the nefarious editor in chief, running errands to find the perfect python headband and making emergency trips to Marc Jacobs when all she really wants is to be a serious journalist and write for the New Yorker. Karen Yampolsky puts a new spin on this tired recipe in her novel Falling Out of Fashion by focusing on a more interesting character: the boss Ms. Yampolsky is ideally suited to write about the industry; she’s been an assistant to Jane Platt, the Editor-in-Chief of the eponymous Jane Magazine, for nine years. The novel centers around Jill White, an enterprising woman who founds Jill in the hope of creating a magazine that differs from all the other women’s glossies, only to struggle in the face of corporate control when her publishing company is acquired by the mega conglomerate Nestrom media. Anyone familiar with Jane magazine’s difficult fit into the Conde Nast family shouldn’t have no difficultly identifying the novel’s real life inspiration.

Celebrity Labels: Enough is Enough

Actress SARAH JESSICA PARKER has launched a crusade to cover up young America with her new cheap-chic clothing line Bitten. The former Sex + The City star’s new Steve + Barry line of affordable womenswear features only conservative attire – because the actress is tired of seeing young girls baring almost all…….”There’s not going to be any inappropriate midriff showing, regardless of your age. I really don’t care for it. I feel like, as a culture, we have seen enough damage done by it. It’s provocative in a way that I just don’t feel comfortable with.” Erm o.k… this revelation comes after Sarah Jessica Parker enjoyed a high level of success from a show which was far from conservative. I’ve gnerally tried to stay away from the SJP for Steve and Barry’s relationship and try to avoid posting too often about the other celebrity lines which keep cropping up mainly because I have no interest in them. I believe what is actually damaging for us as a culture are all of these damn celebrity collections! Designers for the high street I can somewhat understand, we’re buying into the design which is good enough for me and as much as I sometimes have my reservations about some of the partnerships, I fully accept the argument for them and I’m willing to accept that my qualms are based on unreasonable emotion. But celebrities for the high street and celebrity labels in general, need to be stopped. I’m all for affordable fashion, my wardrobe would be empty without it, but what I find distasteful is the mass hysteria that surrounds the idea that a collection of clothes is only as worthy as the celebrity attached to it. I pity the next generation who soon enough will only associate and make their fashion choices […]

Romero Bryan

Romero Bryan has achieved what most designers only dream of. His designs have been worn by Kate Moss, Beyonce, Cameron Diaz, Victoria Beckham and Usher. In 2003 his talent was recognised by the Royal Bank of Scotland when he was listed as no. 5 in the Rich list 2020 with a prediction of being worth £30 million and unlike most he remains extremely down to earth about his success. Having just graduated from the London College of Fashion Romero began designing in his early teens, and received recognition at the age of 16 when singer/actress Samantha Mumba wore one of his designs to the Brit awards. With prospects of a great future ahead of him, we managed to catch up with Romero before he embarks on his career. It’s becoming very common now for our British designers to jump ship and go to New York, is this something you would consider? Well I will be leaving for the BIG NYC August 5th, in the hope of finding a job or at least new clients there to buy my new clothing line. As you may see my graduate collection was somehow different to anything i’ve ever designed before. It wa much more mature, simple yet sexy. Its sexy style came from movement rather than exposing areas, in which I’ve done in the past. So with new market in mind, I thought, hey why not try a different clientele. America watch out here I come……… Do you plan to venture into menswear? Eventually, but for now I’d like to focus on one thing at a time, and that is conquering the womenswear first. Which fabrics do you prefer working with and why? I love chiffons and denim. Chiffon because I love its fludity, its movement can be so sexy yet sophistcated depending […]
