Trends: Checkmate

Last Updated on 19th October 2013 Not usually one to partake in any item of clothing that might come under the banner of “androgynous”, I tend to ignore any call to arms for “sharp masculine tailoring” or “boyish style”. There is one exception, however, one item that lives very happily alongside my floral skirts and countless jewels. Why, men’s checked shirts of course. I go through phases with them, but I always return and now seems as good a time as any to sing their praises. Their boyish charm is the perfect companion to this season’s overriding femininity, especially when worn over a pretty dress or baggy over a sleek silhouette. Plus, they are currently being touted all over town on the likes of ‘it girls’ Lou Doillon.

Gwyneth Paltrow: Short Story!

Last Updated on 24th March 2009 You can’t swing your long locks at the moment without hitting a whole bevvy of style icons who have taken the chop (most recently Gwyneth Paltrow). Short hair seems to be the official length de jour. Usually it is pretty safe to ignore hair ‘trends’ due to hair not being, well, disposable. But there is something alluring modern about a sharp and easy cut. Also, ‘short’ hair is a pretty vague trend leaving plenty of scope for individual interpretation…

Interviews: Celebrity Stylist, Zoe Lem

Last Updated on 21st November 2007 In the world of fashion, Zoe Lem does it all. Whether it’s styling the stars for the red carpet and participants on the UK version of “What Not to Wear, or flying off to the Middle East to work with the English language version of the Al-Jazeera news network, she’s been there, done that, and with a certain je ne sais quoi. Lem trained as a designer before deciding to focus on styling, and now her work can be seen on A-list celebs, magazine covers, music videos, and a myriad of other places. So, the favourite question to ask stylists and designers: who would you consider to be your biggest influences? That really is a difficult one to give a one word answer, I am very inspired by vintage clothing and the 20’s through to 50’s there was such beautiful style. If it’s who rather than what, then there is no one person. But my mother was really so into clothing growing up, even now her favorite shop is Topshop and she has a very funky style. I was brought up on charity shops, markets and finding great bargains in unusual places, a long while before it was cool to go for second hand chic!

Two Stylish Ways To Wrap Up Warm

Last Updated on 23rd February 2016 While sometimes we’d like nothing more than to throw on a couple of thermal vests, an oversized jumper, the warmest pair of trousers we can find and a long puffer jacket, the truth of the matter is that the colder months last for so much longer than the warmer months, so we’ve got to have a winter wardrobe that is as stylish as it is warm. The good news? This isn’t as tricky as one may think. Here’s two looks we’re loving which aren’t too difficult to recreate. Outfit 1 Airport chic at it’s finest and the perfect weekend outfit, pair an asymmetric white jumper with your black skinnies for a look that’s not only effortlessly cool but guaranteed to fight the wintry chills. 1. Pullover sweater / 2. Zara motorcycle jacket / 3. Current/Elliott skinny jeans/ 4. Very Volatile black booties / 5. Yves Saint Laurent shoulder bag / 6. Tom Ford oversized sunglasses/ 7. Nars Supervixen Lipgloss Outfit 2 You know that metallic skirt you snapped up during party season? From London to Paris and Beyond: A Fashion Week Beauty Trend Report

Last Updated on 19th February 2014 It may be the dead of winter in most locations north of the Equator, but Fashion Week signals the beginning of spring for industry insiders and for fashion-savvy females everywhere. Held in New York City, Milan, London and Paris, Fashion Week provides top-level fashion houses and up-and-coming designers with the opportunity to show off their best efforts in anticipating the warmer temps to come. All across Europe as well as in the Big Apple, women eagerly mark Fashion Week on their calendars each year. Most of the looks on display on the runways during Fashion Week will never make it past couture shops catering to exclusive clienteles. Nonetheless, affordable interpretations of the most accessible pieces will make their way to certain online specialists that cater to women whose budgets may be limited but who nonetheless wish to maintain a sense of style. Some of the most anticipated trends for 2014 will be familiar to many; the classic look that never goes out of fashion is all the rage. Florals, of Course What is spring without flowers? An explosion of floral patterns will be everywhere, from flowing skirts to chic tops peeking out from beneath tailored blazers. Large, playful floral patterns will be found on dresses meant for garden parties and more casual occasions. More sedate florals will make their way to office-worthy separates. Even daytime weddings will be blessed with colorful blooms on bridesmaids’ dresses and sprinkled amongst frocks worn by guests. Solids that pick up one or more colors found among floral patterns are a cant-miss match for fashion-conscious but somewhat cautious women. Bolder females will mix and match florals and prints or florals and neutrals. To pull off this somewhat-daring look, at least one of the contrasting patterns should be somewhat more […]

Lady Gaga bares all in Harper’s Bazaar

Speaking of Harper’s Bazaar, here’s this month’s US issue, starring a bare-faced Lady Gaga. You might be surprised – disappointed, even – to see her without spiked cheekbones and wigs, but this, she says, stripped back and natural, is as much her as her 12-inch platforms.

Gisele Bündchen: the last of the supermodels?

Last Updated on 19th March 2018 Some people are so well known that their name is reduced to just a word. Blake, Alexa, Posh and Naomi are all girls that need no surname to be recognised, and when it comes to the modelling, there’s Gisele. Ah yes, synonymous with impossibly long bronzed legs, Brazilian curves and that smile. But apart from being Mrs Tom Brady, new supermum – you’ll remember the scandal over her ‘breastfeeding should be law’ comments – and businesswoman extraordinaire, let’s not forget her roots. Named by none other than Naomi Campbell as the last supermodel, and after topping the Forbes Supermodel Rich List again, we chart the model highs and meteoric rise of Gisele Bündchen… Born to German-Brazilian parents in 1980, like all good supermodels her talent was spotted young, and in a McDonalds, of all places (anyone else ever seen a model scout when grabbing a burger?). At just 14 and already nearly six feet tall, Gisele began a career that would see her secure three consecutive Vogue covers by the age of 19. The real money maker for her modelling career, however, was a five year contract with Victoria’s Secret that would send her fame stellar. It was here she perfected the horse-walk – that stompy, legs lifted high strut with which she walks the catwalk. While her modelling work brought fortune and the coveted title of Leo DiCaprio’s girlfriend, Gisele has never rested on her looks. Sure, representing luxury brands including Dior, Louis Vuitton and, bizarrely enough, Apple, earned her up to $33m a year, but her other ventures include charity stints and philanthropic work (she was honoured at this year’s Global Environment Citizen Awards, in fact). But what is it that makes her so special? Her selling power, in a nutshell. Gisele’s […]

Deal of the day: Dress Up Topshop apricot lace dress

Last Updated on 19th October 2013 This summer it’s all about playing peek-a-boo with a hint of midriff. Seen on the catwalk and on celebs, it’s not about the stomach flashing crop tops of the 90s, but a more reserved flash of flesh. This apricot lace dress from Topshop will allow you to try out the trend without showing all. In a form-fitting bodycon style, it’ll hug your curves and create a slim silhouette, but don’t let that put you off – it’s a great tangy base for adding layers if you’re a little less brave. Lace is also key for summer, and we love the cute lace panelling to offer a playful twist on the trend. In a soft apricot shade, this is an ideal everyday dress for summer. Wear with ballerina hair – a topknot will add cool-girl edge – and zesty accessories to keep it feeling fresh (tomato-red lipstick is perfect for this look).  Dress Up apricot stripe lace bodycon dress, £45, available at Topshop. Tried and Tested: Debenhams’ PeachyBody pants

Last Updated on 12th May 2017 When we heard about Debenhams’ cellulite busting, fat reducing, thigh slimming control pants, we thought they sounded like the things miracles are made off. Naturally, we had to get our hands on a pair and put them to the test. Now I’m the sort of girl who lives for short skirts, mini dresses, denim cut-offs and, very occasionally (when the aforementioned is in the wash), some spray-on super-skinny jeans, so hey, I’m all for anything that promises to prime my pins and make them Alexa-Chung-drool-worthy.

London Fashion Week SS10: Mulberry

Last Updated on 22nd September 2009 Mulberry put on a special show for their S/S10 collection, which was held in the grand Claridges. Inspired by Sofia Coppola’s ‘Virgin Suicides’ and Tim Walker’s photography, Mulberry gave us a “dreamy take on schoolgirl crushes and fairground iconography, sharpened with teen angst. That’s a statement and a half, but they sure lived up to it. Set up like a fairground dream, the space was decorated with pearlised candy-coloured balloons and carousel horses to really set the tone of the show , and we knew we were in for a treat. How refreshing to see a presentation so dedicated to the season it reflected. For S/S10, the most delicious colours mix with contrast prints and key accessories to create a season that’s sweet but full of attitude. Colour is key for Mulberry this season, mixing candy pinks and sweet shades with neutral nudes and vivid sun-bleached brights.

London Fashion Week: Vivienne Westwood Red Label

Last Updated on 19th October 2013 Even standing in the queue for this show was an event; it was a who’s who of celebsville, from Pamela Anderson to Mischa Barton to Kate Moss to Erin O’Connor and Dita Von Teese, yes they were all there en masse. Oh, and I must add that Dita really is flawless. So, on with the clothes and the curiously long catwalk (the models must have been exhausted). To say I was excited is an understatement but I am very pleased to report that the Grande Dame of fashion did not disappoint.

Loafing Around: The Return Of The Loafer

Last Updated on 19th October 2013 Whenever there is a stampede of vertiginous footwear like those of the current skyscraper climate, you can be sure there is a thoroughly horizontal backlash just around the corner. Not that I am advocating an utter abandonment of all things heeled (I’m a heels girl through and through) it’s just that there are some occasions for which my 5 inch wedges and aching feet just will not do. And for those times, I must admit I’m a little bored with what is on offer. Despite claims that the “ballet pump is back” (did they ever go away?), or ever-amorous support for the brogue (which I do love but they have become oh-so-ubiquitous), I am turning to an old classic for my foot salvation. Yes, that’s right, the loafer is the only shoe that will do. Is it just me or does the original
