Yesterday marked an important moment in history. At the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery in Washington DC., the official portraits of Barack and Michelle Obama were finally revealed to an audience which included ex U.S vice president Joe Biden, director Steven Spielberg and actor Tom Hanks. The occasion saw the addition of the first African-American couple to the gallery’s presidential collection which began in 1994, as well as the first time African-American artists have been commission to do the job. Immortalizing Obama in a vibrant garden filled with flowers each possessing sentimental value, New York-based painter Kehinde Wiley said, “The ability to be the first African-American painter to paint the first African-American president of the United States was absolutely overwhelming”. Wearing Peter Pilotto to the ceremony, Michelle Obama opted for Baltimore artist Amy Sherald whom captured the former U.S first lady’s beauty in a stunning Milly gown. Acknowledging the importance of the moment, Michelle highlighted, “I’m thinking of all the girls of colour who will come and see someone who looks like them hanging on the wall of this great American Institution”. She continued, “and I know the kind of impact that will have on their lives, because I was one of those girls.” We think both artists produced fabulous work. Much like the Obama’s relationship, each painting complements the other beautifully. [Image]

Michelle Obama Dazzles In Atelier Versace At Her Final State Dinner
A style icon in her own right, Michelle Obama knows how to use fashion to make a statement and her choice of outfit for her final state dinner yesterday night, was no exception. To welcome the Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi and his wife Mrs. Agnese Landini, FLOTUS wore a stunning Atelier Versace, rose gold chainmail gown that spoke volumes in so many ways. Not least because she was championing an Italian designer in honour of her guests but also because the dress was “unforgettable” which in truth, is how so many feel about Michelle’s time as first lady. Made especially for her by Donatella Versace, the draped detail accentuated Michelle’s curves beautifully. Donatella did a great job and said she was, “humbled and honored to have the opportunity to dress the First Lady of the United States”. Thoughts? Did FLOTUS make the right choice for her final state dinner?

Cementing her status as one of the best dressed first ladies of all time, Michelle Obama one hundred percent slayed on the cover of Variety Magazine and made designer Jonathan Simkhai a household name while at it. Already a celeb favourite, the 2015 CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund winner ‘s dreams literally came true when Michelle decided to wear his custom-made black-and-white dress. Speaking to WWD about working with the first lady, Simkhai said, “It was a huge honor and brand milestone to work with Michelle Obama’s team on a custom dress for the cover of Variety. Michelle represents the definition of a strong, fearless, inspiring, and truly elegant First Lady, and seeing her in one of my dresses was a dream come true.” Meanwhile the Variety interview in which Michelle Obama opens up about the importance of pop-culture and it’s positive impact on promoting her worthwhile causes is a must-read. Not one to take herself too seriously she says, “What I have never been afraid of is to be a little silly, and you can engage people that way. My view is, first you get them to laugh, then you get them to listen .So I’m always game for a good joke, and I’m not so formal in this role. There’s very little that we can’t do that people wouldn’t appreciate,” We certainly appreciated her getting down with Missy Elliott and James Corden on Carpool Karaoke. It was a legendary episode that’ll never be forgotten and in our opinion propelled her to new heights of “woman crush” status.” Oh Michelle, we’re going to miss you when you’re gone! Truly.

We gushed about her wearing it at the start of the year, and also ended the year by naming her one of the best-dressed ladies of 2013 because of it… so it’s safe to say that Michelle Obama’s Jason Wu gown that she wore to the second Inauguration Ball is something pretty special. We aren’t the only ones to gush about the First Lady in the red hot dress though, so it comes as no surprise to learn that it’s going on display at the National Museum of American History for the 100th anniversary of its popular The First Ladies exhibition. Michelle Obama’s dress – along with the red Jimmy Choos – is only going to be there for a year though, so plan your trip to the States carefully if you want to check it out with your very own eyes. She accessorised with a simple but oh so sparkly necklace, and added even more wow factor to her look with some big voluminous curls in her hair. We can’t see her choice of footwear, but we have every faith that she made a good decision. Look at that smile – that’s the smile of a lady who feels as fabulous as she looks!

We’re major lovers of over the knee boots; why else would we have dedicated an entire feature to them? (Click here to check out some of our favourites that we selected a few months ago.) Over the knee boots are the hottest footwear trend right now; you know it, we know it, and First Lady Michelle Obama knows it too. Three cheers for the trendy FLOTUS! Michelle Obama decided to rock the black Jimmy Choo Esther boots at the Sunday Service at Saint John’s Episcopal Church in Washington DC at the weekend, looking chic and fashion-forward with the rest of the Obama clan. MObama wore her stunning boots with a burgundy ensemble that consisted of a dress and a matching cardigan, as well as a black clutch which offset the burgundy hues of the outfit perfectly. And how cute do the First Lady and her daughter look in matching outfit colours? Are the Obamas one of the most stylish families to live at the White House? Let us know your thoughts!

No one can say Michelle Obama doesn’t dress for an occasion, or indeed, the weather. The First Lady looked sunshine bright in a gorgeous Michael Kors yellow dress while attending the second annual White House Kids State Dinner in Washington yesterday, commanding attention in a subtle but effective way. It was the perfect dress for the occasion; the oversized bow at the waist was a great addition, as it gave the dress some much needed definition and made MObama’s look more playful; plus we think it might have given the kids (and their parents) something to talk about on their way home. She accessorised with some lime green shoes which no doubt brightened up the entire room, as well as her outfit. Another flawless appearance from the First Lady of the United States. [Image]

For tip-top Church inspiration, look no further than First Lady Michelle Obama. President Obama’s beautiful wife was a prime example of effortlessly chic Easter Sunday dressing, as she and the family attended a special service at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Washington yesterday. She wore a very spring-appropriate Prabal Gurung number from the designer’s spring/summer 2010 collection, which she first stepped out in three years ago at the Smithsonian, and also wore last year (sans coat) while hosting former President George W Bush and Laura Bush at the White House. A hard-working dress, then! Mrs O’s coat is also from the same collection, and she accessorised with grey pumps which complemented the flower detailing of the dress perfectly. Top marks! [Image]

Anna Wintour always saves the best ‘til last when it comes to releasing the Vogue US issues, and we can definitely see why she made us wait for the April one as it features none other than Michelle Obama on the cover! We guess those rumours were true all along! The First Lady was photographed by Annie Leibovitz in the Red Room of the White House, and is wearing a strikingly stunning blue Reed Krakoff dress on the cover. As well as the gorgeous pictures and candidly open interview, the best thing about this cover star is the fact that she is joined (in both pics and interview) by her hubby, who just so happens to be the President of the United States, Barack Obama! How can any other magazine compete with that?! “Our job is, first and foremost, to make sure our family is whole,” said the First Lady. “You know, we have small kids; they’re growing every day. But I think we were both pretty straightforward when we said, ‘Our number-one priority is making sure that our family is whole.’” Click here to read the rest of this extraordinary interview and see more beautiful pictures.

We bet there are a lot of women out there who don’t want to advertise the fact that they are turning the big 5-0, but First Lady Michelle Obama is not one of them. We don’t blame her either – if we looked half as good as she does at 49, we would want to shout it from the rooftops too! So, while a lot of other women might be dreading their 50th birthday, we have a feeling Michelle will be counting down the days for her bday bash as she has some of the hottest singers lined up to serenade her on her big day – namely Beyonce and our home girl Adele! “America’s First Lady will be holding a huge celebrity-packed party for her birthday at the White House next year and, as she adores Adele and Beyonce, she has asked them both to sing,” a source reportedly told The Daily Mail. “Adele has graciously accepted and waived her usual fee for the high-profile private performance. She will sing a selection of her most-loved hits for the First Lady and her friends.” We wouldn’t be surprised if more singing sensations are added to the list at a later date – we’ll keep you posted with more deets as and when we get them. Read MoreMichelle Obama wore Jason Wu again to the Inauguration ball!
Looks like Jason Wu has once again become the envy of the fashion world, as Michelle Obama gave him the honour of creating her dress for the prestigious Inauguration ball last night. And didn’t he do well? It’s obvious that the First Lady is a fan of the Taiwan-born designer’s work, as this isn’t the first time she has donned one of his pieces. She famously wore one of his designs for the Inauguration ball four years ago and catapulted him to fame more or less overnight. History does indeed repeat itself! While she wore a cream one shouldered floral applique gown back in 2009, Mrs O went for a much bolder creation this time round, opting for a vivid red halter neck chiffon and velvet dress which complemented her figure beautifully. And her newly-cut fringe definitely didn’t go unnoticed – neither did those stunning Kimberly McDonald jewels that were custom-made especially for the occasion. We cannot fault a single aspect of this look – the First Lady was radiant from top to toe!

First Lady Michelle Obama has captivated the world with her effortless, elegant style, and we all waited with baited breath to discover what she would be wearing on that all-important Election Night. We applauded the First Lady’s decision to wear a “recycled” red and black Michael Kors dress for the occasion, as it just goes to show that even the wife of the President can be thrifty too. With penny-saving in mind then, it’s now a good time to mention that George at Asda has made its very own version of the lucky dress in question. The metallic midi dress, also known as ‘the Michelle’, retails for just £20 and is part of Asda’s new “Impress Dresses” range. Whether you want to channel the First Lady or just want a great frock to wow the crowds in this festive season, we think you could do a lot worse than “the Michelle”. And who knows, it might even bring you luck too… [Daily Mail] [Image]

This week’s Rate or Slate see’s a rather interestingly kitted out Rihanna, and the First Lady showing us why the fashion world sat up and took notice when she followed her husband into the White House. For the Battleship Japan photo call Rihanna went with a directional, all-black Givenchy Fall 2012 number – we can always trust RiRi to be a little different! Michelle Obama attended the 2012 Nickelodeon 25th Annual Kids’ Choice Awards in a Wes Gordon Spring 2012 tunic and metallic jeans (or jeggings, we suspect), whilst Tulisa was spotted leaving the BBC Radio One studios in a symmetrical, hyper print Topshop dress. We’re far too torn between these style choices, so it’s over to our Style Jury…. Fashion News Ed says: Rihanna: “Sorry Rihanna, you look like a bag lady here… love the hair though.” Michelle Obama: “Michelle is hands down the winner for me. I love how elegant and gorgeous the First Lady looked in what are possibly jeggings! Just goes to show that it doesn’t matter what you wear and where you wear it to – you can still exude class!” Tulisa: “I do also love Tulisa’s dress… always love a celeb in high street! It’s a bit ‘been there done that’ as I feel Tulisa lives in these types of dresses, but I don’t blame her, as they are perfect for her body shape. Thumbs up!” You say: “RiRi – no to the gloves, add colour pop shoes, 1st Lady – Fab and Tulisa – love the whole outfit except the bag.” – @ItsAyesh via Twitter “Miss O!” Crystal Simone Ferguson via Facebook Verdict: Rate to the power of one! Remember when Michelle Obama wore that Marc by Marc Jacobs dress back in March? Well, the bag she was wearing was significantly cheaper. Banana Republic’s Market tote – we can only assume that’s an intended reference to Jil Sander’s – was Ms. Obama’s bag of choice to escort her on her trip to Brazil, injecting a splash of sunshine into her colourful spring look (though, frankly, with Brazil and a rainbow striped dress, we wonder why she needed any more). The hold-all leather tote with its raw sheared edges is great choice of arm candy for the First Lady’s flight – and for the season in general – so you’ll be pleased to know you can snap yours up here for $120 (£73.30). And if you’re not keen on yellow, you can opt for the brown, orange, blue or green version. We suggest you hurry, though – Michelle’s selling power may not be quite as great as Kate‘s, but she can still shift a bag or two (hundred). Mustard Market bag, $120, available at Banana Republic.

You can never please everyone. I thought Michelle Obama’s style choices were perfect. She understands the occasion and dresses to suit, whilst still looking stylish and elegant. She has created her own look, in a Jackie O vein, she looks timeless yet fashionable. I’ve also enjoyed watching her loyalty to designers such as Thakoon and Jason Wu. But some people are not so happy with her choices. One in particular is Oscar de la Renta: “American fashion right now is struggling. I think I understand what [Obama and her advisors] are doing, but I don’t think that is the right message at the particular point… I don’t object to the fact that Mrs Obama is wearing J. Crew to whatever because the diversity of America is what makes this country great. But there are a lot of great designers out there. I think it’s wrong to go in one direction only.

In contrast to the Pixie Geldof for Vogue Italia debate, Vogue US has chosen a very worthy woman to grace their cover. The First Lady, Jason Wu, Mrs. Obama was shot by legendary photographer Annie Leibovitz. Inside we’re treated to an interview written by editor-at-large. Andre Leon Talley who comments: “She doesn’t need any help [choosing outfits]. She loves fashion and knows what works for her. Mrs. Obama picked the outfits for the shoot herself, and chose a Narcisco Rodriguez black dress as one of her pieces. She’s pictured in a number of ‘hard at work’ poses and in the interview discusses everything from the press interest in her wardrobe to trying to take her children to school. On the First Lady, Anna Wintour remarked: “Change was the clarion call of Barack Obama’s election campaign, though I don’t think any of us at Vogue initially realized that would include the difference that was going to be made by First Lady Michelle Obama’s wardrobe…. It’s inspiring to see our First Lady so serene and secure in her personal style. Mrs. Obama is an inspiration to many and it’s great to see her at the forefront of the media. Much has been said about Michelle Obama’s outfits for Inauguration Day. She’s been applauded, criticized and seriously scrutinized. We thought we’d catch up with one of our favourite fashion critics, eBay Style Director, First Lady of Style. What were your thoughts on Michelle Obama’s decision to wear Isabel Toledo for Inauguration Day and Jason Wu for the ball? She was obviously going for a fairy tale day. They are our American royalty and she wanted to step out royally. Which outfit in particular was your favourite? They were both beautifully imagined and created and I loved Toledo’s choice of colour on the First lady. But I would have liked to see her in something sleeker on both counts.
Read MoreMichelle Obama: The first lady of style
Yesterday was a historic moment, a moment you will tell your children about, they day the world changed. But how on earth do you do decide what to wear on such a day? Well, this was of course the unenviable task for Michelle Obama, at the centre of history in the making, she knew whatever she wore would be analysed and picked to pieces. But you know what? She got it right. With designers such as Thakoon and Christian Dior offering designs for the inauguration, it was Cuban born designer Isabel Toledo who was Michelle’s designer of choice. The gold lace shift with matching dress was beautifully cut, skimming Michelle’s figure and creating a flattering, sophisticated line. With a matching cardigan and that stunning Tom Binns crystal necklace Michelle Obama earned her style stripes. We already know from her previous choices, that she is not afraid to take risks and accessorising with muted green leather gloves and green Jason Wu that we’ve really all been talking about. Wu hadn’t even been told that Michelle would be wearing his dress to the ball. The Tapei-born designer told WWD “I found out with everyone else – which was pretty fabulous, when you think about it.” But what a dress… Like a dream, Michelle, stood in crystal encrusted chiffon one-shouldered gown. It flattered every inch of her figure and for a moment she was closer to a Hollywood star than a President’s wife. If the speech made you cry, it was this dress that did it for me. True glamour, real beauty and optimism for the future of fashion. Politics just got interesting. [

Read MoreA Mens Guide To Monochromatic Outfits
Monochromatic outfits are surging in popularity. Many people think the concept means limiting your clothing to gray, white or black, but it’s really about using any single consistent color throughout your ensemble. Michelle Obama made a notable monochromatic fashion statement at President Joe Biden’s inauguration, and Jake Gyllenhaal has been known to follow this style at some awards shows. Queen Elizabeth II was probably the most prominent example, as she wore color-consistent outfits throughout her seven-decade reign, down to hats and umbrella trims.
