Osman Yousefzada

Sometimes, infact alot of the time, many of us start our careers following someone elses dream, and if we’re brave, soon enough we get back on to the path to our passion. Osman Yousefzada is “one” of the many of us, a former city banker turned Fashion designer, this Cambridge graduate pursued a life in finance before caving in to his creative calling. After studying at Central Saint Martins, Osman made his debut with a collection inspired by his Afghan heritage entitled KALASHNIKOV. Now more than just one to watch, Osman has shown that his work is timeless, rich in talent and has managed to establish a name for himself in the competitive industry of fashion. You describe your Autumn/Winter 05-06 collection, Imperial, as being “fuelled by the current political climate of conflict”. At this time people seem to want to forget about our current situation regarding conflict, why did you decide to confront it and what type of woman were you designing for? Each generation has had its own conflict – it is part of humanity. However, one should be optimistic and look at how throughout history, conflict has brought about new evoltuions and developments in creativity. The women I design for are strong, confident and open to new ideas – someone who feels they need to be challenged and isn’t content with just the mundane in life. How has your background in Investment Banking helped your career in Fashion Design? Working in a high pressure environment where people do not suffer fools gladly has really made me fine tune my skills in business, persistence, tenacity and communication. What difficulties did you find when changing careers? I don’t really see it as having a career change. Everything that I did before has been part of a journey to where […]

Mills McCartney vs Wintour

Wife of Sir Paul McCartney and animal rights activist Heather Mills McCartney is determined to protest against as many (celebrity) fur users as possible! After slamming Sean Combs and losing her leg whilst coming against J-Lo’s bodyguards during a protest against the singer, she has now gone after Vogue Editor Anna Wintour dubbing her has “Cruella DeWintour” and taking it a step further with, “She’s the head at Vogue, and if you look at Vogue, there are only three or four articles, and the whole thing is a manipulation of the consumer and reader to buy fur. Every single article, every designer does fur ’cause she’ll say, ‘I’ll put you in the magazine if you put some fur items in it.” [Contactmusic.com]

Armando Cabral

Name: Armando Cabral Age: 23 Occupation: Model How and when were you discovered? It all started in 2001, when my older sister asked me if I wanted to go with her to her agency, in Portugal. I said “yes” lets go! When we got there, my sister introduced me to the board as her younger brother Armando, and one of them said you could be a model. I was really happy and I answered very shy, “I don’t know”. She said I will take a Polaroid of you and the next day they called, I went back, and they signed me straight away. I took a modelling course for a couple of weeks, which I thought was a waste of time, but now I don’t regret it at all. What was your first job? My first job was a catwalk show, I was very nervous and I remember at the time I was a very shy guy, but at the same time I was very happy knowing I was about to do something I enjoyed. It was actually a very good show, I was nervous during my first entrance, calm on my second, then I relaxed and it all went well. Which do you prefer catwalk shows or photo shoots? I like photo shoots as well as catwalk, but I personally prefer catwalk, because it’s much more exciting, knowing that a lot of people come out just to see you in nice clothes looking good, you know… And you get to meet a lot of important people who come and compliment you….it’s nice. But the best part of shows are the after parties! What 3 things couldn’t you live without? I have some many things that are important to me in my life that I couldn’t live without, but if […]

Heidi Klum lovin it

This is a bit of an odd story, only earlier this week Heidi Klum was quoted by contactmusic.com as saying that she feeds her 14 month old daughter Leni off her own plate as her food is more nutritious than canned baby food. However Heidi is now one in the recent line of celebrities that fast food chain McDonalds has enlisted to promote the “I’m lovin it” slogan. If she’s anything like Cindy Crawford who claims she cant touch the stuff, then we doubt the supermodel has actually tasted a hamburger in quite a while.

Couture Launch

Nine designers, three fashion shows and one Couture definitely makes a launch party worth remembering. Couture, the provider of new fashion experiences, launched on Thursday 11th at the Light bar in Shoreditch (London) where a union of fashion, style and partying was on the agenda for the evening. In addition to music, socialising and a general festive atmosphere, the nine designers were given the opportunity to display their work to consumers and London’s fashionista. “The crowd is so diverse. ” Said Esther Williams, one of Couture’s core team members, “but they all have one thing is common, a love of fashion” The first of the shows focused on designers from London’s top fashion schools including ‘Central St Martins’. Each label showcased fresh and innovative pieces for women from a generation of new fearless and imaginative designers. The labels on show were Sunny Park (Sun-Hwa Park), Iron Curtain (Luda Gelbutovskaya), Nicolerenee (Renee Christopher) and Labeija (Ian Labeija). Emerging male models took centre stage for the second show. Dressed in the urban uniforms of Batlow (Mark Bajade & Timothy Ross-Watson) and Patrick Kevin they filled the runways with an air of strength and defiance. In between the two male designers came the surprise female swimwear section by Antoinette Olivia, featuring bags by Urban Knit. Each bag, a union of European and African influences, represented the cultural diversity of the designers Dolapo James & Dayo Omikunle. Encompassing the entire third show, the undoubted star of the launch was Prangsta, by designer Melanie. Accompanied by a classical violinist, her theatrical pieces mesmerised the crowd with a magical magnetism. Melanie’s collection covered everything from princess to pauper, with the rags to riches feel captured in pieces almost grandiose in their design to others with exuding vintage chic. The Prangsta show only added to the overall […]

I.am Clothing

What do you get when you combine the front man (Will.i.am) and the head stylist (Lor-e Philips) of the multi platinum selling Black Eyed Peas? A creative and unique label by the name of I.am clothing. Founded with the motivation of creating one off pieces rather than mass produced garments, I am clothing is haute couture for the street and consists of waistcoats, skirts, blazers, trousers and scarves. Will.i.am known for his eccentric style is a former student of the LA Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising while Lor-e Philips is widely recognised for her design and styling talents in the television, film and music industry. An advocator of individualism Lor-e talks to us about what makes I.am different from the rest. Your bio states that I.am clothing was created to awaken the world to your view of fashion, what is your view of fashion? We believe that everyone should just be themselves, whatever that is…not following trends and be true to yourself when it comes to fashion. Wear what you like and want to, not what society dictates to you… How would you describe your style? Individualistic… You produce 12 pieces of each of your designs and each piece of clothing is personally signed and numbered by Will.i.am. This is a great unique selling point…what made you decide to do this and once I.am clothing gets bigger and you produce more of each item, will it be something you can continue in the future? We decided to originally to stand against mass production. no one wants to wear something that everyone else already has…this fall/winter collection 2005 has gone up to 500 pieces being produced, they are all still signed and numbered individually by will.i.am… Whom would you class as a fashion icon? Anyone who wears what they want, […]

To celebrate, the Fashion and Textile Museum is proud to announce the forthcoming launch of an ambitious and comprehensive touring exhibition directed and curated by Terry Jones, the magazine’s founder, creative director and editor-in-chief. The exhibition will visit Paris, Tokyo, New York, Sao Paulo, Hong Kong and Beijing throughout 2006 and encompass five decades of cutting-edge creativity traced through i-D’s rich archive, from its beginnings in 1980 to the present day. Reinforcing the magazine’s position as the founder of all style magazines, it will also capture the essence of i-D, whose premise from its conception has been to empower people to express their own ideas and their individual identity. “The revolutionary aesthetic and philosophy of i-D Magazine have provided us with a bold monitor of our times” says Gity Monsef, Creative Director of FTM. “The Fashion and Textile Museum is proud to be collaborating with i-D for this seminal exhibition which will chart the 25-year history of our most visionary style publication.” The exhibition will use ‘identity’ as a central theme and explore this concept in its myriad of forms. Appealing to all five senses on a multi-dimensional level, it will do so with the use of still images, short films, 3-D sound, graphics and scent. Soundtracks featuring music and voices from around the world will form part of the installation, whilst perfumers from Symrise Inc. will work with i-D’s scent curators to create unique fragrances that epitomise the five eras that make up the magazine’s history.

Five Minutes With Rhian Benson

If I could use just one word to describe Rhian Benson, it would be eloquent. Her voice is so calming and self assured, making it easy to warm to her. Born to a Welsh mother and a Ghanaian father, Rhian bravely left a career in investment banking to pursue what truly lay in her soul – “her love of music”. Currently preparing for the worldwide release of her debut album “Gold Coast”, Rhian already has her own lifestyle-oriented TV series featuring celebrity guests, interviews and music videos, of the same name airing on BET. With a diary jam packed of promoting and performing, Rhian took some time out with My Fashion Life to say how she feels……about fashion that is. How important is fashion to you as an artist? I think it’s important in that, whether you like it or not you present a certain image when you get on the stage, and sometimes fashion can help to explain your approach to music. My music is very jazzy and soulful and mellow. And there’s a lot of importance in the messages and so when I get on stage I like to look, a little bit ethereal, wearing stuff that almost seems fantasy like, such as silk and chiffon. You’ve lived in India and Ghana for a while, would you say both countries influence your sense of style? Oh definitely, definitely. I love ethnic jewellery and shell earrings at the moment. I think that it’s a clever way of making a statement about who you are and where you come from. You’re style in the video for “Say How I Feel” was very reminiscent of Billie Holiday, was that your choice? YES it was, it was. We wanted to do it in a jazz club because the song was quite jazzy […]

I think it’s important to dress again. I think that’s very important. It’s just great showmanship and style. I think it goes back to African tribes. They’re always elaborate, they got face paint and beads and dirt in their hair and shit, making them look like something else. You look in the mirror everyday and you see the same thing. As an entertainer, you wanna see something new, know what I mean?” read full interview with The Guardian

Imitation

This is a very interesting article which highlights the point that unlike the music and film industry the fashion world accepts rather than rejects imitations. I have never actually thought about this in depth before and I have always viewed copying as the norm in the fashion industry. It is not unusual that you have the runway shows full of new trends and creativity and within 6 months there are duplicates in the high street shops. If there are complaints from designers I don’t hear about it too much and I think this is probably the reason why. For virtually all players in fashion, some form of derivation, recombination, imitation, revival of old styles, and outright knockoff is the norm. Few denounce, let alone sue, the appropriator for “creative theft.” They’re too busy trying to stay ahead of the competition through the sheer power of their design and marketing prowess. Designers are always are trying to keep ahead and if they attempted to sue all those that copied their work they would never work themselves. Whether its right or wrong for their creativity to be re-worked I cant really say. I can completely understand why they would be irritated. But to be honest I have always viewed it as a compliment for the designer and not as if they are being ripped off.
