Lupita Nyong’o for Dazed and Confused’s ‘Girls Rule the World’ issue

Lupita Nyong’o blew us away with her Ralph Lauren red carpet dress on the Golden Globes red carpet at the weekend. She may have missed out on the Best Supporting Actress award to Jennifer Lawrence, but awards season is far from over, which means that she still has a chance to walk away with a shiny accolade to add to her mantelpiece. It also means that we have many more red carpet outfits to look forward to, but in the meantime, we will happily check out her Dazed and Confused cover to tide us over. The 12 Years a Slave actress covers the magazine’s Girls Rule the World issue, which also features the likes of Lottie Moss (her big sister goes by the name of Kate – you might have heard of her?), Little Dragon, Tavi Gevinson and Stacy Martin among others. Lupita was shot by Sharif Hamza and styled by Robbie Spence, and judging from the preview pics we’ve already seen, we can tell that this is one issue you definitely won’t want to miss! The February issue of Dazed & Confused is out on Thursday January 16th.

Emma Watson vs. Amy Adams vs. Lupita Nyong’o…Who wore red best at the Golden Globes?

It may seem evident by now, but this week shall be spent basking in the glory of the Golden Globes’ red carpet style. Yes, we’ve waxed lyrical about our best dressed, but it only feels natural to carry on! Red was a prominent colour on the , ahem, red carpet at this year’s Golden Globes (was it a frock-off with a carpet, ladies?), and we couldn’t help pitching the leading ladies in red against one another. Partaking in this week’s dress-off is Emma Watson in Dior Couture, Amy Adams in Valentino Couture, and Lupita Nyong’o in Ralph Lauren. The trio of Hollywood darlings looked nothing short of breathtaking on the red carpet, and totally put across their individual styles in their choice of designer and dress, but there can only be one winner… Emma bent the rules, and we love her for it! Wearing trousers with her Dior Couture gown, the peep of blue, cross-strap pumps perfectly round off her look. Amy looked divine in a dreamy Valentino Couture gown, officially making us scream “hell yeah!” at the return of the halterneck, while Lupita – the name on everyone’s lips – stole the night in a cape-sleeved  Ralph Lauren gown. Could she be Superwoman in disguise? Judging by the recent buzz surrounding her, it wouldn’t surprise us if she was! Given all three ladies owned the red carpet with their respective looks, we haven’t quite been able to pick up our jaws from the ground after laying eyes on Lupita’s look. While she waits in line to find out about her potential Oscar-win next month, she’s already won in the style stakes. Whose look wins for you?

The Golden Globes 2014: The best dressed!

Golden Globes time! Yep, it was the 71st annual Golden Globe Award ceremony in Beverly Hills yesterday, and the red carpet was once again full of the biggest and best-dressed names in Hollywood. TV and films stars alike came together for one of the biggest nights on the awards season calendar, and to say they pulled out all the sartorial stops would be a bit of an understatement, as we don’t think our list of best-dressed celebs has ever been this big! Lupita Nyong’o definitely stole the show for us with her effortlessly elegant Ralph Lauren caped look (we got flashbacks to Gwyneth Paltrow’s Tom Ford cape dress at the Oscars a few years ago) while Olivia Wilde and Camila Alves also made our jaws drop with their glittering gowns courtesy of Gucci Première and Dolce and Gabbana respectively. Unsurprisingly, Sofia Vergara went for the wow factor in a large Zac Posen dress, while Jennifer Lawrence went for a Dior dress, as was expected. Take a look at the full list of our best-dressed ladies below and let us know who took your breath away! Lupita Nyong’o in Ralph Lauren Olivia Wilde in Gucci Première Cate Blanchett in Armani Privé Sofia Vergara in Zac Posen Taylor Swift in Carolina Herrera Camila Alves in Dolce and Gabbana Kate Beckinsale in Zuhair Murad Couture Sandra Bullock in Prabal Gurung Margot Robbie in Gucci Emma Watson in Dior Couture Mila Kunis in Gucci Première Amy Adams in Valentino Couture Jennifer Lawrence in Dior Uma Thurman in Atelier Versace Kerry Washington in Balenciaga Reese Witherspoon in Calvin Klein Emma Roberts in Lanvin Naomi Watts in Tom Ford Zooey Deschanel in Oscar de la Renta Allison Williams in Alexander McQueen

Lea Michele talks life after Cory in Elle US December issue

Following the tragic death of her Glee costar and boyfriend Cory Monteith earlier this year, Lea Michele is finally talking about it in the Elle US December issue in a bid to help other people who might be in a similar situation. “I never thought I would be in this position in my whole life. Now that I am in this position, you can choose to rise, and that’s what I’m going to try to do,” Lea told the mag. “I know that Cory would want nothing more than for me to take this situation and use it to help people. “It’s very hard. And you have to be very strong to come out of this alive, but I think by doing the best for myself, by showing that you don’t have to lose yourself, maybe someone else will feel some sort of strength or comfort.” It looks like Lea Michele is handling this “staying strong” thing quite well, as she still manages to look phenomenal in her Carter Smith lensed editorial. She’s also rocking a number of enviable designer threads from the white Ralph Lauren Collection jacket she’s wearing on the cover, to the Derek Lam cropped jumper in the pic above, among others. You can see more pictures and read the rest of Lea’s compelling, heartfelt interview in the December issue of Elle US, out on November 19th.

Katy Perry covers W November, talks about her “rock star life”

Sexy pop siren Katy Perry is on not one, but two W covers this month – both of which are real contenders for best November cover of the year if you ask us. KP is posing for a serious of seriously stunning pictures shot by Mario Sorrenti and styled by Edward Enniful, and is modelling designs from Ralph Lauren to Michael Kors to Marc Jacobs (below) among others. She also talks to the mag about everything from her singing career, to marriage, to lending her voice to the popular The Smurfs films, and answers the question on everyone’s lips: will we see her in any Hollywood blockbusters in the near future? If shooting starts at lunchtime, then maybe… “I hate mornings,” Katy revealed. “So I told some executives who had asked me whether I wanted to act that if you want to start shooting at 11 a.m., then I’m your girl. Otherwise, I’m not interested. “I live a rock-star kind of life where I don’t go to bed until 4 a.m. I’m very nocturnal. But I always say that if Ridley Scott wants to hire me for Blade Runner 2 to play Rachael, I am absolutely available.” We’ll keep our eyes peeled for that announcement then! You can check out the rest of Katy Perry’s interview and see more gorgeous editorial pictures in the November issue of W magazine, or by clicking here.

The 2013 Emmy Awards: The best dressed!

Your football-watching boyfriend may tell you otherwise, but the 2013 Emmy Awards were the biggest and most important event of the weekend, as the stars of our favourite television shows flocked to the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles, California last night. The red carpet was bursting with well-dressed actors and actresses from both sides of the pond, and although Girls star Allison Williams pretty much stole the show for us in her royal blue Ralph Lauren dress, there was a definite pale and interesting sartorial theme recurring. Zooey Deschanel, Claire Danes, January Jones, Kerry Washington and Rose Byrne were some of the ladies who went down the pastel pretty and pale look, while others like Sofia Vergara, Kaley Cuoco, Carrie Underwood and Alyson Hannigan went for big, bold, bright, and beautiful. Here are a few of our red carpet highlights – let us know who gets your best-dressed vote in the comments and on Twitter! Sofia Vergara in Vera Wang Kerry Washington in Marchesa Claire Danes in Armani Prive  Kaley Cuoco in Vera Wang January Jones in Givenchy  Carrie Underwood in Romona Keveza Zooey Deschanel in J Mendel Linda Cardellini in Donna Karan Atelier Allison Williams in Ralph Lauren Christina Hendricks in Christian Siriano Rose Byrne in Calvin Klein Collection Heidi Klum in Atelier Versace Sarah Hyland in Carolina Herrera Mindy Kaling in Edition by Georges Chakra Michelle Dockery in Prada  Alyson Hannigan in Marchesa

Jennifer Lawrence wears Calvin Klein for Vogue US September 2013 issue!

After much anticipation, Jennifer Lawrence’s Vogue US September issue cover is finally here. And she’s more beautiful than we could have ever imagined! The radiant Oscar-winning actress was shot by Mario Testino, and can be seen wearing a Calvin Klein autumn/winter 2013 number on the cover. We love how the mag went for a beauty shot for the cover! Calvin Klein isn’t the only designer J-Law is wearing though – she is also rocking pieces from the likes of Dolce and Gabbana, Rochas, Ralph Lauren, Louis Vuitton and Prada in the image below. Quite possibly one of our favourite images in any magazine… ever! Jennifer’s interview is just as funny and candid as you would expect – perhaps even more so – and we particularly liked what she had to say about the paparazzi… “If I were just your average 23-year-old girl and I called the police to say that there were strange men sleeping on my lawn and following me to Starbucks, they would leap into action,” she began. “But because I am a famous person, well, sorry, ma’am, there’s nothing we can do. It makes no sense. “I am just a normal girl and a human being, and I haven’t been in this long enough to feel like this is my new normal. I’m not going to find peace with it.” Feisty! You can read the rest of what Jen had to say in the Vogue US September 2013 issue which hits newsstands August 20th.

Sofia Vergara covers up for Harper’s Bazaar US (and still looks gorgeous!)

Well well, what have we here? Modern Family actress Sofia Vergara without her two most famous assets on display? A rare but beautiful sight which just goes to show that Sofia’s beauty is about more than her cleavage. Sofia was shot by Terry Richardson for the August issue of Harper’s Bazaar US, and is rocking an impressive selection of clothes from the lies of Ralph Lauren, Dolce and Gabbana, and jewellery from bling King Harry Winston! As much as we ladies love the glammed up look, we know that most people love a good natural look too every now and again too. However, Sofia is not one of those people! “I’m Latin; I do it no matter what,” she said about getting glammed up. “It’s automatic. I shower, do hair and makeup. For me, it’s like shaving. “I don’t believe in a natural look. Lipstick brightens your face! Unless you’re Gisele Bündchen or 19, you need something. Most of my girlfriends are very good with it because they’re Latin, but some of the Americans, I give them lipstick like, ‘Put it on!’” Wouldn’t it be awesome to have Sofia Vergara as a best friend? You can read the rest of her interview and see more stunning pics in the August issue of Harper’s Bazaar US.

This season everyone is going wild for messy beach head hair and super straight locks. Long tresses that can be styled chicly are the must-have accessory and some of the hottest trends are so easy to replicate, there is no excuse not to be on board the fashion wagon. Even if you don’t have long hair you can still copy some of these looks by using hair extensions and clip in hair pieces. So without further ado, here are the top 4 hair trends that will transform you from girl next door to catwalk queen. Sexy waves This summer it’s all about carefree curls. Channel the beach vibe and get super sexy bedhead waves using a waving tong or wand. Here is a video tutorial to help you get a natural, wavy look and if you already have luscious curls, you’re one step ahead! Low ponytail/fishtail plait Who said that a ponytail is a little girl’s game? One of the hottest hairstyles is a low slung pony; it’s laid back, it’s simple and you can make it ultra glossy with some finishing serum. Everyone from Dior to Chloé has been featuring this trend but if you want to try something different, simply plait it into a fishtail for a unique style. Poker straight Super straight locks are back and better than ever. All the SS13 catwalks featured poker straight hair including Derek Lam and Lacoste (as pictured above) but make sure you use a good heat defence spray. The key to a super straight look is to have the right tools consisting of a ceramic ion brush, a mixed bristle oval cushion brush to protect the scalp and most importantly, some professional titanium straightening irons. Low-slung bun Can’t be bothered styling your hair to perfection and just want to get […]

5 films which changed the face of fashion

Fashion and film have always gone hand in hand, and some of the most iconic moments in fashion have been captured on the big screen, from Audrey Hepburn’s classic little black dress in Breakfast at Tiffany’s to Marilyn Monroe’s ruffled white dress in The Seven Year Itch. It’s not surprising that a lot of the world’s greatest fashion designers have been heavily influenced by films from various genres across the decades. So which films made fashion what it is today? 1. A Clockwork Orange and Jean Paul Gaultier You might not imagine Stanley Kubrick’s dark and difficult cult classic ‘A Clockwork Orange’ to have had a profound influence on the world of fashion, but the bizarre and oddly intimidating cricket whites, white shirts and bowler hats of Alex and the Droogs inspired one of the most influential fashion designers of modern times. The actor Malcolm McDowell who played protagonist Alex bumped into Jean Paul Gaultier at a film festival who profusely thanked him for his costume, “Thank you very much, because that film changed my whole design.” he said. 2. Chinatown and John Rocha Roman Polanski’s Chinatown made in 1974 in John Rocha’s eyes is “One of the all-time great movies on every level.” The film has been selected by the Library of Congress for preservation in the United States National Film Registry for films that are “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant” which gives a good indicator of just how brilliant this film is lauded to be. For John Rocha it is Jack Nicholson who is the embodiment of the film. “He is super-cool and sharp but at the same time it is totally effortless.” Such is the influence of Nicholson’s suit, trilby and sunglasses combo that every time Rocha makes a menswear collection he thinks about how Nicholson would […]

Helena Bonham Carter covers British Vogue’s Ageless Style July issue

We’re not ashamed to say that we squealed with excitement (and scared the postman in the process) when British Vogue’s July issue slid through our letter box yesterday afternoon – and that’s largely because we couldn’t be happier with the fashion Bible’s decision to put our girl crush Helena Bonham Carter on the front. Well played Vogue! The July issue may be all about ageless style, but Helena’s style is about so much more than that: it’s personal, fun, out there, and we’re willing to bet good money that she just doesn’t give a damn. And that’s part of her appeal! ‘I wear hats I’ve bought for the children,” she admitted to the mag. “Once The Daly Mail called me the Bulgarian Elf – now Tim calls me that all the time.” Aww, Helena! And speaking of headpieces, HBC is modelling quite a few of them in the editorial images from the likes of Tour de Force, Benoit Missolin and Ralph Lauren Collection. A truly stunning editorial – we can’t wait to sit down with a glass of wine cup of tea and read her interview too. The July issue of British Vogue is out on July 3rd.

Five of the best brands to sell on eBay!

You might be convincing your girlfriend to sell one of her many handbags or pairs of shoes to make some extra room in the house as well as some extra money, but there’s no reason you yourself can’t get in on the selling action either. There’s a host of great brands to buy and sell on eBay, and if you’re a bit of an online marketplace novice, we’re here to assist you with some helpful suggestions for what to sell. Nike – more and more people want to get into shape, especially now the sun is coming out. Trainers, tracksuits, anything with the Nike label is sure to go down well with buyers as they know they’re getting performance-enhancing quality. If it’s good enough for the pros… Dolce and Gabbana – whether it’s aftershave, accessories or clothes, buyers know they’re getting something great when they see something bearing this Italian label. Levi Strauss – what man doesn’t love investing in a good pair of jeans? Jean brands don’t get more respectable than Levi Strauss – as they never go out of fashion and only get better with age, Levi jeans are perfect contenders for eBay selling. Gap – another great brand to sell to fellow men who want something that covers the three “c”s… cool, cheap, casual. Gap does loungewear, and it does it quite well! Ralph Lauren – another designer label that does all the hard work for you. You don’t need to convince buyers to buy a second-hand Ralph Lauren item – the pics and label will do it alone! And if you want to ensure that you’re a credible eBay seller with positive feedback and 100% customer satisfaction, we’d suggest using Royal Mail for sending your packages out to their new homes. You can use the website […]

5 lust-worthy pieces from John Lewis

It’s Friday, which means we have the whole weekend to tour our local high street and shop ‘til we drop – wahoo! However, as it’s Mother’s Day on Sunday (yes this Sunday – don’t forget!), you might want to spend your weekend doing something more productive – or even something leisurely with Mum – which leaves hardly any time for window shopping. Not to worry though, as the good old internet has stepped in once again and saved the day! Akin to the actual store, we can get lost on the John Lewis website for hours on end, as there are pages and pages of covetable items from clothes to shoes and in particular a great selection of Mischa Barton bags! We’ve comprised a list of five of our must-have pieces for the upcoming spring/summer 2013 season. Take a look at our selection: Lauren by Ralph Lauren Shawl Collar Cardigan, Capri Navy/White We know the spring/summer season is fast approaching, but we shouldn’t lose sight of where we are on the globe… no cropped tops and cut-off shorts on a daily basis for us here in the UK. You can still totally wear your prettiest skater dress to upcoming events, but make sure you team it with a cute cardi to keep out the chill and add some colour, texture and pattern to the outfit. This striped beauty is a particular fave! Hobbs Florrie Suede Bow Ballerina Pumps , Navy/white Wave goodbye to winter boots and say hello to pretty pumps. You can still wear your trusty black jeans, leggings and skirts this season, but mix things up with some navy and white shoes to break the black. Plus the bow is too adorable for words! These beauties also come in the nude/white colour combo, but they’re not recommended for those […]

The People’s Choice Awards 2013: The best dressed!

Hooray for the first official awards show of the year! The People’s Choice Awards have a little bit of everything – they gave glitz, they have glamour and best of all they have celebs from all walks of life coming together to celebrate their talent and generally have a good time. Any excuse to get dolled up and party, right? As usual, there was a plethora of beautifully-dressed ladies who graced the red carpet. Taylor Swift rocked up in a plunging white floor-length Ralph Lauren gown to show One Direction star Harry Styles what he’s missing… mission accomplished we’d say! We also had Lea Michele and Chloe Moretz attempt to turn heads in their respective attention-grabbing Elie Saab and Simone Rocha numbers, while Emma Watson was her predictable cute and lovely self in a short floral Peter Pilotto dress. Host Kaley Cuoco was pretty as a picture, as always, with the Christian Siriano dress she arrived in being our favourite of her many frocks of the evening. We found narrowing down our favourites a bit tricky this time round, but check out some of our best-dressed from the night below. And don’t forget to cast your vote at the bottom too – your opinion means everything to us! Keeping Warm with Winter Boots

[no skim] It’s going to be a cold winter in the UK this year, and with the coming party season it’s easy to forget that as beautiful as those sparkly party shoes might be, they’re not going to keep you warm on a frosty evening out on the town! Thankfully, however, fashion designers are aware of our predicament, and even on the high street there are a range of stylish options to keep your feet from getting cold, so you can at least make your way around on a night out! Throughout 2012, fashion weeks and catwalks were buzzing with the latest boot trends, inspired no doubt by the increasingly colder temperatures and a return to the Heritage-inspired style that favours traditional English winter wear. Of particular note were the quality leather riding boots currently favoured by Ralph Lauren, which you can match with a tweed coat or Burberry scarf to complete the look. For a high-street alternative, Clarks’ range of women’s shoes include some great options inspired by country living. Their GORE-TEX range, which uses special materials that are waterproof while still allowing your feet to breathe, is particularly welcome in the wet winter months! Extra-high boots have also made a big impression this year, with top designers like Versus and Roland Mouret sending thigh-hugging leather boots down the runway in colours to match the rest of the outfit. This over-the-knee style brings a real boldness to an outfit – although a pair of warm leggings in the same colour will have a similar, more subtle effect for a softer look. Wear with a dress that ends just above the knee, or create a more daring ensemble by leaving a visible gap between the boot top and the hemline. Finally, ankle-boots are as popular as they ever have been. […]

Midweek Moodboard: Nude

No this isn’t the after-hours edition… the American Music Awards have just got us totally crushing on all things nude right now! We don’t need to tell you the power of a good nude shoe (Kate Middleton – that’s all we need to say) but that’s not where our love for the colour (or lack thereof) ends. As it’s Christmas, rocking up to a glam event in a nude top or dress that’s adorned with sparkles and embellishment would make you stand out in all the right ways, as would donning a plain nude dress or top-and-trouser-combo and accessorising to your heart’s content with brighter accessories.  The possibilities are virtually endless when it comes to the nude trend which is why we are all over it this festive season. Anne Hathaway’s a natural beauty for Vogue US December

It’s finally here! We’ve been looking forward to this cover ever since photographer-to-the-stars Annie Leibovitz let the cat out of the bag and revealed that she had shot Anne Hathaway for the American fashion Bible’s December cover. And although the photographer is famous for creating more unconventional – and sometimes controversial – images, it’s nice to see that she stripped everything back and let Anne Hathaway’s natural beauty shine through on the cover. As well as the gorgeous, striking green dress on the cover,  Anne is modelling some beautiful pieces in the editorial, including a Valentino Haute Couture velvet dress, and a Ralph Lauren embroidered vest and ruffle blouse. In the accompanying interview, Anne naturally chats about her role in Tom Hooper’s Les Misérables, and reveals that she knew the part was hers when she left the audition… “I knew that someone was going to have to go in there and do something pretty special to unseat me,” she said. “Sometimes you leave a room and you feel like maybe you’ve left the door open a crack. This time, I knew that I had slammed it shut behind me.” Now we haven’t seen the film yet (it’s out on January 11th – get it in your diaries) but judging from the trailer which we helpfully put in at the bottom, we can totally see where she’s coming from. We got goosebumps! The role belongs to Anne and only Anne, and we bet there’s a “best actress” award or two out there with her name on.

We love the sheer simplicity of the cover image… a wool Bottega Veneta coat in one of the main shades of the season and boldly lined feline eyes are all it takes to provide us with a flawless and captivating picture. Kudos to photographer Alasdair Mclellan, as the editorial pictures are just as wowsome! Check out how flawless the Ralph Lauren Collection and Giorgio Armani jackets look on her in the respective pics below for proof! We’ll hopefully be seeing a lot more of Emma as she’ll be promoting her brand new film The Perks of Being a Wallflower soon, where we predict she’ll be showcasing a lot of British designer talent from the likes of Alexander McQueen and Erdem among others. Can’t wait! [New York Times]

Midweek Moodboard: Obsessed with orange!

Yesterday we couldn’t help but gush about Leslie Mann’s cute, summer-ready orange Monique Lhuillier dress and today we are equally as besotted with the shade thanks to another fine appearance by Twilight’s Ashley Greene. Therefore it should come as no surprise to learn that our midweek inspiration comes in the form of the wonderful colour, orange! Sure nothing rhymes with it, but there’s a lot of looks you can get out of the colour. Brighter than its coral counterpart, more daring and playful but just as attention-grabbing as its red neighbour, orange really is one of the ultimate shades of the new season! Take a look at some of our favourite pieces currently available for you to snap up: Python skin cuff, £260, Tess Van Ghert available at Far Fetch Bird printed dress, £26, available at Dorothy Perkins Orange jeans, £150, 7 for all mankind available at Zalando Printed scarf, £116, Ralph Lauren Blue available at Far Fetch Braided rope belt, £25, J Crew available at Net a Porter Envelope clutch, £99.99, available at Daniel Footwear Platform pumps, £517, Nicholas Kirkwood available at The Corner

Five of the best stylish destinations for the fashion conscious

Holidays for some can be simply lying in the sun, taking part in some sort of sporting activity or even doing some volunteering but for others it’s a chance to shop somewhere new for something special. We’ve selected five of the best destinations from around the globe for all things fashion. Book flights and accommodation at great prices with www.directline-holidays.co.uk. 1. New York New York! Although the exchange rate is not what it once was, you can still make some massive savings on designer and high street goods on the other side of the pond. Invest in some quality American tailoring with classic shirts and chinos from Ralph Lauren’s stunning flagship menswear store on Madison Avenue featuring made to measure services and a ‘create-your-own polo shirt’ outpost. Getting your shoes shined is a must for any New York tourist; visit legendary Don at 47th and 6th between News Corp and NHL headquarters for the best shoe shine in town. Don’s past clients have included Rod Stewart, Martin Luther King, Jr., Karl Rove and Chris Rock. 2. Va va voom – Paris There’s a certain ‘je ne sais quoi’ to the classic French way of dressing seen in Parisian streets so it makes perfect sense to shop in the stores the locals do to emulate our Francophile friends. L’Eclaireur on Rue de Sévigné is a menswear boutique bursting with the latest designer goods in a shop that could be as much described as an art installation with over 147 screens and sweeping floor to ceiling wooden sculptures. Another must see boutique is ‘Colette’ located near the Louvre, a multi floored store not only selling high end designer and cutting edge up and coming brands but also gadgets, jewellery and techno accessories. 3. When in Rome… or Milan Italians bring their unique […]

Jessica Biel fronts InStyle US August issue, talks about Justin Timberlake giving her style advice

The gorgeous Jessica Biel is InStyle US’s cover girl for the August issue, rocking a very wow-worthy black and gold Ralph Lauren jacket with some simple jeans and strappy Gucci sandals. The last Jessica Biel cover we were blown away by was her W issue back in March, and this one, which was photographed by Dusan Reljin, is just as beautiful. Jess talks to InStyle about what she’s up to in Hollywood at the moment (her new films Total Recall and The Tall Man, basically), and of course, her yummy fiancé Mr Justin Timberlake. And as if JT didn’t already seem like the perfect boyfriend, the fact that he gives her perfect style advice has just made him go off the scale. “He is fearless in his choices and has a real eye for design,” Jessica told the mag. “And I’ll be honest: He has better taste than I do!” A bold statement; could he be any more perfect? InStyle’s August issue hits newsstands this Friday!

Top menswear looks for summer

The pick of this season’s styles for ready-to-wear cool Menswear is full of reinvented classics and creative twists on wardrobe staples this year, as designers seek to find a way to make stylish clothing worth its pricetag in the recession. With an emphasis on combining frivolity with longevity, we’re seeing key menswear trends returning with reinvented twists, as well as classic men’s summer clothes, like chinos (lovely camel colours at Next) being paired with summery colours and more daring patterns for a splash of seasonality and fun. As Simon Chilvers points out in the Guardian Friday fashion blog, there’s no point in pushing British products and designers if no one actually buys the clothes. He’s talking about a new Fashionbeans points out some of the key looks for the sportsjacket here – think an American high school letterman jacket, and you’re about there. 2. Printed shirts, shorts and accessories Prints are big news for mens and womenswear in 2012; this went big a few seasons ago when Ralph Lauren started bringing out shorts with embroidered animals and different prints. This year, dark blues with white prints, such as birds or simple plants and ferns, are the order of the day. A printed backpack, or even printed trainers, are a more subtle way to work the trend. 3. The men’s backpack Again, not a new kid on the block, the backpack, but it has overtaken the satchel as the accessory of choice in 2012. Leather straps combined with canvas bagging is the hottest way to wear it: casual but not too polyester-sporty.

My Beauty Evolution – Jen Holmes

In the first post of a series sponsored by John Lewis, who will open the doors to their new-look Oxford Street beauty hall in early May, Jen Holmes from www.littlebirdfashion.com shares the story of her own beauty evolution. I’m a self-confessed beauty snob: I love makeup, I’m fanatical about skincare, and I’ve developed a rather impressive perfume collection. In fact I’ve been harbouring a serious beauty habit for the past 12 years, and it all started with a concealer… My very first beauty purchase was a stick of Rimmel’s Hide the Blemish concealer in Ivory. As a teen I had terrible skin and was always on the lookout for that miracle cure (if you’ve found it, let me know!). Concealer soon became a must-have in my makeup bag and it wasn’t long before I was loitering with intent around the nail varnishes, eyeing up eye-shadows and buying into blushers – I had been well and truly bitten by the beauty bug. Taking skincare seriously Back in my shop-girl days, my weekly wage was a meagre and precious thing and so my beauty buys were cheap and cheerful to fit. But as I struggled on with my skin I decided it was time to invest, and as an awkward 14 year old, my mum took me for my first trip to the hallowed department store beauty floor. I watched, entranced, as a perfectly made-up consultant taught me how to cleanse, tone and moisturise at the bright and clean Clinique counter. From then on, a large portion of my wage has been spent on high-end skincare. Getting brighter and bolder Through my teens, I experimented with colour, trying temporary hair dyes, a rainbow of eyeshadows and a different shade on each nail. My makeup motto was the brighter the better, and Barry […]

So…who will design Angelina Jolie’s wedding dress?

Since Brangelina announced their engagement by brandishing a ring costing the equivalent of a modest flat in London in our faces, we decided to amuse ourselves (and you, of course) with Ms Pitt-To-Be’s prospective wedding dress. We didn’t just want to imagine what Angelina would choose for her big day, we actually wanted to ‘create’ it, so to speak. (Keep reading…) Taking a brief look at Angelina’s red carpet appearances so far this year, it’s clear she has an affinity for….. 1. Versace – She opted for directional look on the Golden Globes red carpet in a rather memorable Atelier Versace number, and who can forget the Oscars? Apart from the infamous, knobbly kneed flash of leg on display – which acquired a following of its own – again Angelina picked Versace. Donatella’s designs are clearly number one for the Hollywood superstar, but she does opt for other big names, too. Angelina’s daytime, smart-casual look often lies in a Ralph Lauren suit, and at the 3rd Annual Women in the World Summit last month, she appeared in an androgynous, monochrome Gucci suit. It appears Ms. Jolie is a sucker for classic fashion names, but not without putting a personal and highly unconventional spin on things. She won’t just wear a look fresh-off-the-catwalk, but rather tattoo it (pardon the pun), sartorially, with her initials. And, extreme personalisation, we say, is the way forward when it comes to picking a memorable wedding dress. Ange definitely won’t be succumbing to the ‘meringue culture’ surrounding wedding dresses! (We hope!) So, a lot of you may possibly be thinking Angelina will settle for a Versace bridal number, but the Italian brand isn’t known for its altar-appropriate fashion. However, one wave of Ange’s celeb wand and Donatella would probably be in her atelier working on something […]

Runway to Bedroom Mirror: Hats off to spring summer 2012 headgear

Several erogenous zones emerged from the spring summer shows: just-above-the-navel exposed midriff; ears, thanks to statement earpieces at Prada and Dolce & Gabanna, and, oddly enough, ankles made it onto the list, too, with a multitude of ankle strap footwear that showed up. And probably the most exciting of them all, hats. Headgear in all guises made headlines this season, from raffia pompom peak caps at Burberry Prorsum – a quirky play on merging a sporty aesthetic with a tribal one – to wide brimmed floppy hats at Rag & Bone that reminded us why we love summer so much. We travelled back in time to the roaring 20s, thanks to Ralph Lauren’s pretty pastel cloche hats. But when we witnessed a botanical print BMX helmet at Alexander Wang, it was as though the hell-raising BMX bikers had landed in the gardens of paradise– well, kind of. From this point on, we knew hats were going to be a major add-on to any spring summer look, for a dose of sheer drama. Take note from the all-knowing Victoria Beckham, who effortlessly paired super-desirable caps with sexy silhouette dresses and made it look so perfect and proper. And over at Jil Sander, Raf Simons did the impossible, perfectly; when he cleverly attached a blusher veil over a beanie, and made us dizzy with excitement. It was all about mixing up the elements and breaking away from the head-warming, wintery associations often made with hats. Roksanda Ilincic showed us just how cool-appropriate a bright beanie looks paired with a colour pop midi skirt. Give your all-eyes-on-me tote a break from the endless fashion people glares it notches up on days out, and take inspiration from our top headpiece picks to add an edge to your summer wardrobe. Head turning effect, guaranteed.   […]

AW 11 Trend Recap: Romanticised Fetish & Subtle Androgyny

Fetish If bold hues and saturated prints sent your pulses racing during spring/summer 2011, brace yourself and prepare to be doused in the sexier side of fashion. Fetishism’s were a seductively tantalising visual for autumn/winter 2011, as we saw designers so skilfully display the romanticised side of this extreme ‘sport’ into their collections. Sweet nothings were whispered at Christopher Kane, Dior and Louis Vuitton with delicate sheer inserts contrasted against stark black, whilst a lacier affair delighted at Lanvin and Antonio Berardi. But this bondage inspired look wouldn’t be complete without a touch of slick black PVC and leather as seen at Etro and Ralph Lauren. If innuendo were a dress, this would be it. Androgyny They may be impossible to live with, but the boys are being generous this season and letting us borrow from their wardrobes. Nothing brought a more mastered masculine touch than autumn/winter 2011’s softly-softly take on sharp tailoring. Injected with sexy, feminine accents in the form of sparkly trousers at Michael Kors and plunging necklines at Balmain and Chanel, tuxedos were the template. Totally transformed, with embellished lapels at Dolce & Gabbana; cropped tux jackets at The Row; rounded tailcoats at Moschino and a prevalently monochrome palette; this really is the best of both worlds.

Met Ball 2011: best dressed

We’ve just about recovered from the excitement of the Royal wedding with its vast array of stylish guests and, of course, Kate Middleton’s breathtakingly beautiful McQueen gown – but the weekend hit us with more star-studded events as the Met Costume Institute Gala landed in New York last night. The Met Ball brings the best of the fashion, film and music industry together for a night of fabulous fashion and exhibitions, and this year’s gala was hosted by none other than Vogue editor Anna Wintour, who honoured the late Alexander McQueen with an exhibition called Savage Beauty. Naturally, the prestigious event is harder to get into than Wonka’s chocolate factory, so we’ve cast our sartorial eye over the fashion elite who bagged a Golden Ticket and strutted their stylish stuff on the red carpet. Here’s our top 10 best dressed from last night’s Met Ball…   Ashley Green She may play a vampire in Twilight, but Ashley Green managed to look positively angelic in a custom Donna Karen strapless gown. The nude voluminous tulle was adorned with silver sequins that trailed into a wedding-like train. Teamed with a sleek up-do and touches of sparkle in her ears, clutch and cuff, she looked positively radiant. Jessica Alba Always one to look utterly fabulous on the red carpet, Jessica Alba didn’t disappoint at last night’s Met Ball dressed in a custom Ralph Lauren platinum strapless bustier gown covered in a sparkly crystal-encrusted overlay that highlighted her growing baby bump. Blake Lively Being the face of Chanel has been a dream come true for this Gossip Girl starlet, and last night she was joined by Mr Karl Lagerfield himself. Naturally, Blake opted for Chanel couture by means of a nude embellished dress covered by silver-lilac a chiffon sash to flaunt her fabulous figure too much. Beyoncé […]

Victoria Beckham wears Victoria Beckham to royal wedding

As predicted, Victoria Beckham wore one of her own designs to the biggest event of the century, opting for a modified slash neck navy dress from her AW11 collection with a floating draped hem at the royal wedding today. Naturally, it skimmed her bump beautifully and looked super slick against her black Christian Louboutin Daffodil pumps and Philip Treacy hat, placed expertly in the centre of her forehead with twig-like twizzles. Of course, she had a better accessory than most – David Beckham – who looked suitably dapper in a Ralph Lauren Purple Label bespoke suit with black crocodile braces and a top hat. Very suave, though apparently he wore his OBE medal on the wrong lapel. You can’t win them all, eh?
