Where to Find Your January Sportswear Savings

Shopping in the January sales can mean many things to many different people – finding that perfect winter coat at the perfect price, stocking up on all those winter accessories to see you through to March, or maybe just queuing up on a cold street corner, keeping your fingers crossed that the dress you’ve had your eye on is going to be on the sale rack AND in your size. But there’s another essential area of January clothing that doesn’t often get too much attention – sportswear. Ok, so it’s not exactly high fashion, but at the time of year when you’re much more likely to start a new fitness regime, it’s important you know where to find the right gear… Of course, sportswear specialists are an obvious place to start, especially if you need something a little more niche. There are plenty of online retailers that can cater to a whole range of sporting activities from gymnastics to golf and at this time of year there’s a very good chance that they’ll have a decent selection of items in their sale. It’s also worth searching for promotional codes before you pay for your items, saving you a few more pounds in the process. Larger sportswear retailers don’t disappoint in this department either. In fact, the online arms of sportswear giants often provide everything you could ever need for whatever sporting activity you want to undertake. When you have the best intentions and what to get out on that morning run a few times a week but don’t have a suitable pair of trainers or the budget to get some flashy ones, online treats such as Sports Direct Discount codes mean you won’t have any excuses to put if off any longer. And with the winter sales in full […]

Kate Hudson creates sportswear collection for JustFab

Clearly not content with just co-designing collections for Ann Taylor, Kate Hudson has also decided to dabble in sportswear – and her first collection entitled Fabletics is slated to launch later this year! Kate joined forces with online retailer JustFab to launch a collection comprised of sporting clothes and accessories, and is targeted at working professionals and busy mums on-the-go. “I co-created Fabletics with Don Ressler and Adam Godenberg [co-CEOs of JustFab] to offer busy women quality activewear that is fashionable, functional and affordable,” she said. “I’ve always lived an active lifestyle, and with two boys life has only gotten busier. As a working mum, I know what it’s like to be on the go and running around from one activity to the next. “Sometimes you just don’t have time to change, but you still want to look cute – whether you’re taking a yoga class, running errands or meeting up with friends before you pick the kids up from school.” We can’t help but think Kate would look “cute” regardless, but we’re thankful to have another sporting collection to look forward to. The Scottish designer didn’t create a generic sportswear collection though – she had the first ever all-female horse racing team in mind! “I’m very pro-women as a designer, so when I was approached to do this project and read the amazing things that these women have achieved, it convinced me to get on board,” the designer told British Vogue. “They’re really strong female role models. “I took the silhouette from one of my most popular dresses and made it shorter and a bit sportier for the girls, and applied the colours in stripes. I wanted it to be graphic and bold.” Graphic and bold it definitely is, and you can see British jockey Hayley Turner, American Chantal Sutherland and Canadian Emma Jayne Wilson modelling the kit above. 1990’s Fashion: Sports and Heroin Chic

Heroin chic is a trend in fashion that is based on sickness, dark circles under the eyes, exhaustion, and other signs of drug use. It originated in the early ‘90s and mainly in the United States, when heroin use became popular in wide circles, due to the decline in its market value. At the same time, most people did not know how to get into rehab without insurance (https://addictionresource.com/drug-rehab/no-insurance/ would have definitely helped them), that is why the rates of deaths from drugs were pretty high. In the ’90s, it wasn’t about body awareness and healthy habits — half of all Americans smoked on a regular basis, the opioid epidemic was at its peak, nobody would go get treatment at rehab by choice.  At this time, a huge number of films on this topic appeared. You definitely watched or heard of such movies as Trainspotting, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, The Basketball Diaries, and Pulp Fiction, which have become iconic.  So, let’s figure out why after the ‘80s, when Princess Diana and Brooke Shields were style icons, everything changed dramatically and the trend was a slender physique and unkempt. How heroin chic appeared It all started with British photographer Corinne Day, or rather with her photo shooting with Kate Moss called The 3rd Summer of Love. It is important to understand that these photographs glorified the future photo model, giving a powerful impetus to the development of her career.  At that time, Kate was only 15 years old, but that did not stop Day from filming her half-naked with a cigarette in her hands. These photos instantly spread throughout the fashion community, appearing on the covers of many glossy magazines, including The Face. At this time, for the first time, the term Heroin Chic began to be used, which […]

The company also supports animal welfare groups, forest stewardship programs, and living wage programs.  When you buy apparel and outdoor gear from Patagonia, know that the company uses recycled materials, natural dyes, and organic cotton.  2. Girlfriend Collective Stock up on fashion activewear made with eco-friendly materials and sustainable practices when you purchase from Girlfriend Collective. How technology is being used in fashion

Since the Industrial Revolution, companies of all kinds have looked to technological innovations to improve workplace efficiency. Two centuries on and digital technology has permeated every nook and cranny of our lives, with the fashion industry now embracing the very latest technologies to alter the way we look and feel. Technology and fashion have in fact been on a collision course since around 2007, when designer Hussein Chalayan came up with a ‘video dress’ incorporating 15,000 LEDs in its fabric. Now, wearable technology is really taking off and the public has access to innumerable pieces of kit to adorn their persons. A lot of it may not be immediately identifiable as fashion per se, but it marks the start of a new revolution, which is about to sweep through bothworry industries. Demand led The key to good design is meeting a real need, and the need now is to have access to whatever data or technology we want at all times. The best way to do this is to blend the kit into clothing and accessories, and the fashion industry is driving the revolution in wearable technology. This techno-clothing has to look great; otherwise people simply won’t wear it. The technology required to create the devices is becoming more flexible, durable, and affordable, so that the room for innovation is expanding by the day, and designers are able to come up with a range of attractive designs to meet consumers’ aesthetic and practical needs. Sony SmartWatch This attractive smartwatch uses the Android OS and has a 1.6-inch touch screen. It syncs date, time, and weather information over Bluetooth via compatible headphones. Functions such as, controlling the music player and viewing messages, email, Twitter, and Facebook can all be customized, and for fitness fanatics a Walkmate is also available for download. […]

London Fashion Week SS15 highlights from Mulberry, Topshop Unique, Marchesa and more!

London Fashion Week certainly didn’t ease us into the new season’s offerings gently, as it plunged straight in with fabulous collection after fabulous collection. Mary Katranztou once again pushed boundaries with her dance inspired collection, while both Whistles and Topshop Unique gave us hope that we can partake in the new-season trends at a fraction of the high end designer price. And as sportswear was a big theme of the Topshop Unique show, we definitely think versatility and wearability will spring to mind when deciding on whether to splash out on the new season pieces. After all, who doesn’t want to tell themselves they’ll head to the gym and be the most fashionable one there… Elsewhere in London, Mulberry proved that it doesn’t need a creative director at the helm to churn out an inspired collection with a great vision, and Marchesa once again made us completely envious of each and every model lucky enough to be draped in the exquisite designs. As pictures speak am thousand words, here are some of our visual highlights of London Fashion Week so far… Topshop Unique Mulberry Mary Katrantzou Marchesa Whistles

New York Fashion Week SS15 highlights from Jeremy Scott, Michael Kors, Proenza Schouler and more!

We were particularly excited for the Jeremy Scott spring/summer 2015 show, as Miley Cyrus hinted that she would have something to do with it back at the MTV VMAs a few weeks ago. And she certainly wasn’t telling porkies, as she was in fact walking the runway for her good friend Jeremy Scott – and if we’re being honest, it almost seems like his entire collection was made exclusively for her. The pair also unveiled a  series of accessories titled Dirty Hippy – which essentially look like they’re made of kids’ toys and all things nineties. So girls, you know where to get your new wardrobe from if you want to channel Miley… Elsewhere, the New York Fashion Week spring/summer 2015 catwalks saw collections from Betsey Johnson – which was as wild and fairytale like as you would imagine – and Proenza Schouler, among others. Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez made sportswear a pretty big part of their latest Proenza Schouler collection, although it was juxtaposed nicely with some fierce parkas, casual jumpers, and more leather than you could shake a stick at. Leather trousers? Check! Leather incorporated in polo necks? Check check! Michael Kors presented a stereotypically happy and upbeat collection comprised of fun stripe and gingham prints, bold colours and cute separates. Flowers and sequins were in abundance – sometimes on their own, sometimes together! Here are some of our highlights from the latest New York Fashion Week shows: Jeremy Scott Proenza Schouler Michael Kors Betsey Johnson

Net-a-Sporter to launch next month!

If “I don’t have any stylish sportswear” was your one and only excuse to avoid the gym or going for that run, then you’re going to have to think of a new one, as Net-a-Porter’s new sportswear platform Net-a-Sporter will be launching next month! “The initial idea for Net-a-Sporter only came about six months ago,” Net-a-porter president Alison Loehnis said. “We already carry some great activewear brands, such as Adidas by Stella McCartney, Lucas Hugh and NIKE and we wanted to build on our offering and broaden our buy to create a dedicated category for sport.” So what can we expect from N-A-S? “A mixture of accessible and luxury sports brands,” she continued. “It was important to us from the beginning that the pieces themselves were not only performance-based but that they could also be incorporated into our customers’ personal style. “We know that a lot of women are exercising and heading straight from their yoga or ballet class to breakfast with friends without changing. With this in mind, we have developed a category called ‘après sport’ designed for those who want to look incredibly stylish after their workout.” Sounds like they have thought about absolutely everything! The service launches on July 9th,so we don’t have long to wait to find out what lovely brands and pieces await us. Are you excited? [Telegraph]

And speaking of the World Cup, footie enthusiasts will be pleased to know that a pop up store will be, well, popping up on the fifth floor until Sunday July 13th. Pretty neat, right? See you there! First look: Riccardo Tisci for Nike

We told you that Riccardo Tisci would be collaborating with Nike on an exciting project a few weeks ago, and now the cat is officially out the bag. The Givenchy designer has teamed up with the sportswear brand on a four-piece collection of basketball trainers taking the shape of the classic Air Force 1, and we have the very first look in the picture above. And with Chanel making trainers the “it” shoe of the season thanks to its Couture show last week, they’ve never been so desirable… “The shoe is universal yet somehow very personal,” Riccardo Tisci explained. “I travel all over the world, and I see people wearing the Air Force 1, and they wear it in so many different ways. And so I was thinking, what is the essence of the Air Force 1? And how do I take that essence and make my own statement? “For me the Air Force 1 is not about gender, it’s not about a particular city, nor is it about a certain style. The community decides. It’s democratic. It’s love.” Do you think love is good word to describe the trainers? Do you like Riccardo Tisci’s designs? Let us know if you’ll be treating yourself (or someone you love) to a cheeky pair. [Telegraph]

Priyanka Chopra becomes first non-white Guess star

Guess has enlisted the help of some of the most beautiful women in the world from Claudia Schiffer, Victoria’s Secret Angels Alessandra Ambrosio and Adriana Lima, and Kate Upton, among others, to appear in its ad campaign images. But now the brand is taking the term “most beautiful women in the world” a little bit further by tapping former Miss World World Priyanka Chopra as its newest ad campaign star. It’s big news not only for Bollywood actress Priyanka, but also for the brand, as she is the first ever non-white model to star in its campaigns. “Priyanka’s confidence, strength and sensuality reflect the qualities I always look for in a model,” said Paul Marciano, founder of the brand. “She reminds me of the young Sophia Loren and the top actresses of the 1950s. “With the Indian movie industry exploding on a global stage, and Guess having a brand presence in 87 countries, we could not have found a better global brand ambassador. Choosing Priyanka reinforces our celebration of multi-talented, dynamic and accomplished women.” We couldn’t agree more; better late than never! We hope the brand will continue to consider non-white models for its future ad campaign images as Priyanka looks breathtaking in these Bryan Adams lensed images. What do you guys think? [WWD]

Paris Fashion Week SS14 highlights from Elie Saab, Stella McCartney, Saint Laurent & more

Another day at Paris Fashion Week, and the likes of Elie Saab, Stella McCartney, Saint Laurent, Giambattista Valli and Emanuel Ungaro all presented their spring/summer 2014 collections. As we are huge fans of highly glamorous red carpet worthy dresses, Elie Saab is always one of our most highly anticipated shows on the Fashion Month calendar… and luckily, the Lebanese designer didn’t stray from his usual ultra glam aesthetic for his spring/summer 2014 collection. His models floated down the runway in his effortlessly beautiful and intricate dresses which were comprised mainly of delicate lace and sexy Chantilly lace, and also strutted their stuff in panelled jumpsuits, fierce minis, floral pieces and even a seventies-inspired halter neck dress. We know that Stella McCartney likes to dabble in sportswear (being very active herself and also collaborating with Adidas) and that was definitely translated in her spring/summer 2014 collection. Sporty pieces with a masculine meets feminine theme were running strong throughout the very wearable and very versatile collection.  Favourites include the cap sleeve crocodile print dresses, organza dresses, layered zip detail dresses, and some stunning trouser suit combos. Handbags were held under the arm a’ la Victoria Beckham! Over at Saint Laurent, Kanye West’s best pal (not!) Hedi Slimane presented what can only be described as a versatile and courageous collection. It lacked a strong, possessing theme which his previous outings had, which means that he is less about defining the Saint Laurent brand and putting his stamp on it and more about having fun with it and experimenting. Both Hedi Slimane and the Saint Laurent Paris label are growing up and growing into their new roles; this is Saint Laurent as you’ve never seen it! Gwyneth Paltrow and Stella McCartney reveal Goop collaboration…

Gwyneth Paltrow and Stella McCartney have finally let the Goop cat out of the bag! After teasing us for a few weeks, the ladies decided it was time to put us all out of our misery and spill the beans on what they had been secretly working on. And we can reveal that it’s none other than a capsule clothing collection! Squeal! So what brought this on, you ask? “It makes perfect sense. Stella and I keep our collaborations to a minimum,” Gwyneth said. “We complement each other. It was the right time. We’re very close friends. We were bringing two worlds together and it was important not to force them.” The capsule collection (which you can see some models wearing in the picture above) features classic Stella McCartney staples such as a black blazer, black jeans, black wool trousers, and several handbags that will remain exclusive to Goop! We’re pretty excited for the pieces to land on the website so we can have a closer inspection. What do you think of the Gwyn and Stella collaboration? Did you guess right? [WWD]

Sweating the small stuff: Is fashionable gym gear important?

Sometimes, a brow-raising snapshot of someone committing an act of foolishness in the name of fashion is all it takes to get mouths moving at HQ. And this week, we’re blaming our subtle rant on the woman who can effortlessly outdo Andre Leon Talley in bright pink socks and flat pumps: Anna Dello Russo. When Fashionista reported the street style siren had been captured on Instagram jogging with her friend-in-fashion, Giovanna Battaglia (who was relevantly dressed), wearing a complete runway look from the Dolce & Gabbana spring 2013 collection, we couldn’t quite comprehend the gravity of the matter. But it appears ADR’s high-intensity routine called for a high end outfit, and well, we wouldn’t expect anything else from ADR, really! Famed for not shying away from wearing a complete designer look when attending a corresponding show during fashion month, Anna left our mouths agape with her appetite for staying stylish, even when working up a smelly sweat (but does Queen Anna’s sweat even smell bad?), and forced the following question pop up in our ever enquiring minds: Is it really important to look fashionable when fighting the bulge? OK, so ADR may have taken the meaning of ‘fashionable’ to a whole other level, but does looking at this snapshot of ADR pounding the streets in current season wares (and potentially risking insulting her dear Dolce friends) up the pressure to stay stylish in the gym? Does it really matter that you’re sporting Stella McCartney x Adidas when doing the downward dog? The sports-luxe trend has helped enmesh the worlds of perspiration and pap-worthy fashion, but we all know it’s not about rocking a Wang mesh vest, or a Rihanna x River Island tank top when hitting the treadmill. As mother always said, sensibly does it nicely. But designers and celebrites aren’t […]

L’Wren Scott collaborates with Banana Republic

We all have Rolling Stones fever at the moment. But our aforementioned addiction doesn’t stop at the boys, as we’ve always had a bit of an obsession with Mick Jagger’s girlfriend – top designer L’Wren Scott! We’ve drooled over her dresses and looked on jealously as the likes of Nicole Kidman and other top A-listers floated along the red carpets in her designs knowing full well that we could never afford them. However, we’ve just caught wind of a holiday collaboration with Banana Republic which has really excited us, as it means that we could potentially step out in a L’Wren Scott designed piece without spending several months’ rent money in one go. Result! “Banana Republic is somewhere I used to shop and something I grew up with,” she told WWD. “From a quality point of view and their price point, it was really impressive. They have this massive team that helps you achieve what you want to do. It’s this big machine. “In a team that size, you have somebody for every component for the making of a garment. The sheer speed that they can achieve is mesmerising.” The 50 piece collection will hit stores on December 5th – just in time for Christmas!

Wimbledon female pros wear adidas by Stella McCartney Barricade

Congrats to 19-year-old Brit tennis pro Laura Robson, who won her match against Russia’s Maria Kirilenko at Wimbledon yesterday! Did you happen to catch what the girls were wearing? They were both kitted out in Stella McCartney’s Barricade for Adidas collection (as was Denmark’s Caroline Wozniacki for her match), so you can be forgiven for being distracted from their tennis playing by their outfits. So even though it’s a battle on the tennis courts, the girls were united in terms of their sportswear – especially since they worked with Stella on the pieces. “Tennis is really one of the sport disciplines that I design that can really house feminine styles with high performance,” Stella McCartney said. “We achieve this in our use of colour and cut as well as using all the latest technology. I am really proud to work with these incredible athletes to launch the collection.” We look forward to catching Laura and Caroline in their Stella/Adidas AW13 gear, which apparently is as practical as it is stylish… “The new adidas by Stella McCartney barricade range makes me feel secure and comfortable on court,” said Caroline Wozniacki. “The bright colour blocking and advanced technology presented in every item I’m wearing gives me confidence to focus only on my own performance on court.” Kudos to Stella McCartney and adidas for another winning collection, and good luck to the girls for the rest of their matches! http://youtu.be/4mCPTaQKEIk

Sporting Fashion Ideas for Everyone

[noskim] It’s a great time to start looking after our slightly unloved bodies by eating well and getting active for spring. But when that amazing class you booked looms suddenly around the corner, will you have any clue of what to wear? It’s one thing being comfortable but it’s another being stylish and confident in what you’re wearing. Basically, in order to be a pro, you need to look like one first. Aerobics Aerobics is a popular choice for women who like routines and motivating music. Gone are the days of the 80s leotards and sweatbands, so instead show off your dancing talents in a loose top that doesn’t restrict your movement, and accompany with a pair of workout leggings. Sweaty Betty has some great legging options that are designed to flatter your silhouette while you work out. Running Running can cause vigorous movement in areas like your stomach and chest so comfort is key when it comes to picking the right sportswear. Start by choosing a sports bra that will support you while you run. Marks and Spencer supply a wonderful range of bras designed for different activity levels. Yoga For yoga, you will need clothing that allows you to stretch into all those difficult positions. To achieve this in style, opt for a soft lightweight tee or vest in your favourite colour. Darker colours are usually more flattering as they streamline your body and disguise the look of sweat. Workout leggings are also the best option for yoga as they won’t restrict your movement. Table Tennis Whether you’re a fan of outdoor tennis or table tennis, there are plenty of outfit ideas for both. However table tennis requires less movement than regular tennis, meaning that your clothing can be kept a little more casual. You could throw some […]

Could Jessica Ennis be starting her own fashion label?

26-year-old Jessica Ennis has already conquered the athletic world by winning a gold medal at the London 2012 Olympics earlier this year, so don’t be surprised if she soon tackes over the fashion world too. “I’d love to start my own fashion label,” she told Bespoke magazine. “Whether it’s collaborating with a sportswear brand or doing the more fashion-y side of things. It’s a brilliant position to be in. It’s nice to have the option to pick and choose clothes – it’s less stressful when you’re deciding what to wear.” We are quite confident that Jess would be able to pull it off, as we predict her collection would be the best of both worlds. She has reportedly described herself as a “skinny jeans” kind of girl which is fine by us – who doesn’t love rocking a good pair of jeans? – but she’d have the glamorous part down to a tee too. After all, Jessica has sported some of the hottest designer pieces from the likes of Alexander McQueen to Stella McCartney over the past few months, so she’d know a thing or two about what makes a gorgeous, stylish outfit. Selena has just been named as a guest designer for the Adidas Neo sportswear label for the next three years, which will not only see her help out with the designing, but also appear in the ad campaigns for the next four seasons. ”It is a great partnership for me because Neo really cares about style and having fun with fashion and allowing you to be yourself,” Selena said. “This is something that’s always been important to me and is important to my fans, too: knowing they can express themselves through wearing whatever clothes they want and feel good about themselves. “I get to wear the clothes first and have a voice and an opinion and I can’t wait to see the results of our new collection.” Exciting! Three years is a long time though, and things might get a bit awkward if she falls out with boyfriend Justin Bieber, as he just so happens to be the face of the brand… [Contact Music]

Prada’s Olympic collection continues high fashion’s athletic obsession The S/S 2013 fashion season’s well underway, with London Fashion Week in full swing, but its Milan’s menswear catwalks that are still the talk of the town. Prada’s S/S men’s collection created a buzz, with its Olympic spirit clear for all to see. Thanks to Prada, just-like-that, the tracksuit is back. The collection features a supremely tailored take on the traditionally slouchy sportswear, with go faster stripe detailing switched to run the length of the inner, rather than outer, leg. Sweatbands, sports vests and polo shirts completed the look, alongside wide-strapped and striped rubber mules, reminiscent of retro Olympic swimmers. A long way from the eyepopping Jimmy Saville shellsuits of old, the sports gear has been toned down and tailored up, with designers using a whole range of fabrics to create a whole new take on this athletic staple. Helping the tracksuit sweat its way from the sports track to the red carpet, trendsetting celebrities have played as big a part as haute couturiers in transforming the tracksuit into a hot fashion item. We’ve seen a lot more of celebrities in their gym threads in recent years, thanks to the round-the-clock […]
