Pre spring/summer 2012 if you’d asked me to take a pair of ‘Pat Butcher’ earrings to my earlobes, I would’ve promptly jumped on the pun and butchered you. However, this summer changed all that.

As the models at Marni, Dolce & Gabbana and Prada made their way down the runway, suddenly I felt my affection for accessories rise a notch, or ten. Statement earrings, in all their lustful guises, we’re visibly dangling from the models’ dainty ears, (almost large and seemingly heavy enough to drag them down!).

There we’re pretty rosebuds attached to painfully sparkly diamantés at Prada, while chillies, tomatoes and garlic bulbs performed their version of Tarantella (a Sicilian folk dance) at Dolce & Gabbana – almost good enough to devour.

Enter fall 2012, a whole season later, and statement earrings are still headlining. Only look to the Opulence trend to emerge from the runways, and the Sicilian baroque religion infused collection courtesy of Dolce & Gabbana that made a stunning, oversized statement with bejewelled chandelier earrings – minus the food references, instead dripping in gold for a heavily ornate and lavish look.

But even with all the catwalk references, would you still catch yourself investing in a pair of look-at-me earrings that pretty much drain away attention from every other part of your being, and leave passers-by with a look of diamanté-induced awe on their faces?

Take away the horrific Pat Butcher wardrobe references: shoulder pads, faux fur and all, and it would be difficult not to invest, considering that statement earrings are pretty much complementary to every item of clothing in your wardrobe – from the OTT embellished jacket right through to your favourite cosy Angora jumper and cropped trouser combo.

I defy you to resist the lure of this lavish ear adornment after browsing through our top statement earring picks…
