Size is still a big issue in the fashion world, especially with rib-gate still fresh in everyone’s minds.

However, Balenciaga creative director Nicolas Ghesquière has given us a refreshing spin on the matter, as he spoke out about his recent desire to make clothes that will not only look good on catwalk models, but will suit and flatter women of bigger sizes too.

“We started very skinny, it’s true. Strangely, we didn’t have fit models at all to begin with – just to give you an idea of the size of the company,” he reminisced about the label he started 15 years ago. “So we did fittings on the girls at the studio and they were often quite petite. I had a tendency to think good cut and small size was best suited, but a good cut should come in big sizes too.

“That’s what I want to focus on – it’s the cut, not the sizing, and if people see that they can wear something in a big size, then I did my job.”

Who knew?! What a refreshing thing for a designer to actually admit! Good luck Nicolas – we’re rooting for you!
