The Nautical Look: Trend or Staple?

Every year at around this time I see four or five articles exclaiming over the nautical trend of this summer. It’s hard not to think beachy, oceanic thoughts when the weather is warm and sunny out and the summer holidays are fast approaching … but I repeat, I see this every year—so at what point does a trend became a wardrobe staple that simply goes into hibernation for a few months out of the year?

It’s that time again: The James Bond Bikini

To all the guys out there, you’re welcome. To the ladies, my apologies for reminding you what impossible perfection in a bikini should look like. Seeing Halle Berry in her infamous orange swimsuit probably makes you think about how quickly beach season is approaching and how many workouts you can fit in before then.

Steep vs. Cheap: Cocktail Shorts

This Spring/Summer, shorts won’t only be a staple with flip-flops for day at the beach, but a trendy alternative for hitting the town for cocktails at night. Some people might have problems with mixing casual attire with evening wear, but when paired with sexy sandals or stylish wedges and a cute loose-fitting button down or a drapey top, the new breed of shorts stand a chance in giving minis and party frocks a run for the money.

London Fashion Week: Its a wrap!

According to the most recent edition of Drapers magazine, since the point of taking over at the British Fashion Council, 18 months ago, Helen Riva has managed to bring London Fashion Week – with the help of sponsors – from the point of nearly declaring bankruptcy to the brilliant success that it was this season. Seriously….even my Aunt who hasn’t really got a clue about fashion week informed me over the weekend of some of the highlights from the past week. So what does this mean? The PR was fantastic and the exciting buzz was felt by many! Apparently Riva, wants to put the swing back in to LFW and intends to make the event an important part of the “city’s cultural calendar” so I guess we can expect bigger and better things come February.

London Fashion Week: Caroline Charles, Ben De Lisi and Bora Aksu

Day one of London fashion week started on Saturday and by the end of the day my feet were killing me. Unfortunately I did not take my own advice but it was all worth it. Highlight of the day aside from the shows was meeting fellow bloggers Gemma from Catwalk Queen, Susie from Style Bubble, and Ronke from Musings of an Ondo Lady! So….it all kicked of for me at Caroline Charles, followed by Ben de Lisi, Bora Aksu and ended with Unconditional. Caroline Charles Caroline Charles was a disappointment. It was a confusing show with a lot of confused faces in the front row. (I didn’t intend that to rhyme I promise) The collection was filled with lots of kaftans, zebra prints, embellishments and straw hats. Granted….it was a mature collection but unfortunately a dated one.

Adidas x robotisthefuture EQT B-Ball

We’re loving this version of the Adidas EQT B-balls. With the help of hip hop video production house ROBOT films, Adidas have revamped the EQT B-Ball which now joins other old classics that have been re-designed as part of a new collection entitled REMIX. “It’s similar to a Mixtape DJ blending or a record label having single remixed. We take the adidas Sport Performance models and add a little of this and a little of that, just as DJ’s and producers do, resulting in products that are in trend for the person wanting to rock something different and unique or the collector looking to add another piece to his or hers sneaker museum. We do our best to keep an ear to the street. And we give ‘em what they want,” says Bryon Sheng , co-creator of REMIX. The real wow factor of the remixed version is the 3M fabrication which makes it turn all white in the dark. Yes as usual this is a limited edition and only 500 pairs are being released in the U.S. We’re waiting on Adidas to send us a list of stockists. Stay tuned for more info. Oh I almost forgot, the Adidas x robotisthefuture EQT B-Ball’s retail at $150. ***UPDATE*** List of stockists after the jump

Rain Rain Go away….

With the British weather currently in chaos, we may be trading our bikini and beach bag for thermals and a ‘Kag-in-a-bag’. With flood warnings and wind speed dominating the forecast, and little hope of a full repeat of last years glorious weather the Summer’s trends appear to be going to waste. That said here are a few fashion pieces that will reign in the rain: Glastonbury’s barely over but the festival look is still a go; this electric blue parka, £70 from Topshop is loud enough to brighten up any dreary day.

The Maxi Dress

The maxi dress has declared itself the must have item for the summer, so ditch the skin tight mini’s for something long and floaty! Perfect for the beach, or the bar so if you’re going on holiday there’s no excuse not to include the maxi in your ‘pre-holiday-splurge’. For casual-summer-chic, opt for a linen maxi dress with a pair of flat gold summer sandals, and accessories with simple wooden bangles and shades. The great thing about the maxi dress, apart from its obvious visual delights, is its ability to suit most body shapes. The dresses are meant to be tight around the bust, then loose fitting and long to the float, giving a more flattering silhouette. If you are a little shorter than most, team yours with wedge heels for an instant lift!

Fru Fru

Label Name: Fru Fru Created by: Sydney Sisters Cam and Amba Shepherd What was the first piece of clothing you ever made? wow that’s a real brain stretcher….. as Fru Fru it was a collection of very feminine girlie hand decorated & printed cotton tanks – sequins, lace, paint, soft and pretty. If you could make 3 changes to the fashion industry what would they be? 1) In Australia we would get the government to plough some money (or provide business incentives/ discourage importing) into Australian textile and manufacturing industry because it all going off shore now which means that making garments here is now STUPIDLY expensive. 2) We would develop retail cooperatives for young emerging designers to sell their wares direct to the public. 3) We would set up a taskforce to take all the retailers who order stock (on 30 day account) but then don’t pay, off to a big fat ugly jail cell (no make that a teeny squishy ugly one). What couldn’t you live without? Living near the beach. Whose style do you admire? Gwen Stefani & Kate Moss What will you be wearing this autumn/winter? Well its coming up to Summer here now so lots of bikinis and free flowing cotton tops because it gets so hot! Lots of turquoise, gold, spots, sparkles and stripes i think… Describe Fru Fru in 3 words….. Thoughtful, wacky, sweet! What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given? “To live a creative life we must lose our fear of being wrong” JC Pearce and to always believe in impossible things (just like the Queen in Alice in Wonderland). Condé Nast does Reality

Condé Nast have joined the reality tv bandwagon. According to WWD, Condé Nast’s West bureau have sent out an email confirming shoots have begun for a new reality show based around Teen Vogue. The show will follow Lauren Conrad from MTV’s docudrama “Laguna Beach” around while she interns at the magazine under Vogue senior West Coast editor Lisa Love. Richard Beckman the president of Condé Nast’s media group has called the idea “intriguing”, and followed up with “I think it could be interesting, given what goes on in this building.” There is a possibility the show could be a test run for a spin off for the “Laguna Beach” docudrama. Hopefully we’ll see another series in the pipeline, focused around Vogue Editor, Anna Wintour, that would prove very interesting. [WWD, Teen Vogue]
