Steep vs Cheap: Cat eye sunglasses

This season, Prada made for fruity fashion playtime with monkey business on skirts and Fifties-inspired, cat eye swirly sunglasses. Dior did much the same, teaming cat eye frames with Lolita fringes and eclectic prints. And with the summer sun playing peek-a-boo from behind the frequently grey sky, we’re trooping on in search of our favourite feline accessories.

Love or Hate: Matthew Williamson Silk Blur Palm Kaftan

One of the main things I love about summer fashion is all its’ gorgeous, light, wispy ensembles you can wear with ease. When the sun comes out, so does my more adventurous side, and never is this more so than on holiday. For a few weeks of the year, you can prance around in silk, chiffon and other delicate fabrics like you’re a centrefold in Vogue. Top of my wish list this year is Matthew Williamson’s silk blur palm kaftan. The multicoloured silk design is fabulously otherworldly, and its one-shouldered cut is perfect for the sunshine. The silver beaded embellishment around the neckline only adds to its appeal. It’s officially a kaftan so it can, of course, be worn over swimwear on the beach, but I think it’s far too nice to get covered in sun cream. I’d pair this beauty with some silver sandals in the day or rock it in the evening with a pair of heels. All I need now if to book my holiday… Matthew Williamson Silk Blur Palm Kaftan, £798, available at Matches. BUY NOW!

Blake Lively’s become a redhead!

The gorgeous Blake Lively is known as much for flowing tresses as she is her impeccable sense of style, so we were a little surprised this morning to see that she’s dyed those beach blonde waves red. Red! Appearing at the Times magazine 100 Most Influential People party last night, she debuted her brand new ‘do on the red carpet with a mane to match, showcasing inches of full, bouncy, auburn waves.  Red locks are quite the rage at the moment, it appears, having been spotted on the heads of Rihanna and Cheryl Cole, so was it just a matter of time before Blake embraced the look? Unlikely. Apparently her new hair is for a film role as Glinda the Good Witch in the upcoming Oz: The Great and the Powerful movie, which would explain those rumours a while back, too (though teamed with her turquoise Zuhair Murad gown and towering Louboutins, she’d be equally suited for the role of Ariel, we reckon). Film roles aside, we’re unsure whether this racy colour suits Blake. It’s a bit too dramatic for her relaxed style and makes her look old beyond her years. Fingers crossed she’ll swap back to blonde after the film. Whatever will Karl say? What do you think about Blake’s new hair? Would you ever dye your hair a dramatic colour? As always, your thoughts below, please…

How to wear it: clashing prints

The catwalks went mad for prints this season. Floral, stripes, polka dots, digital, beach scenes – they’re everywhere, and we just can’t get enough. So why only wear one when you can wear two, right? Mixing prints is the perfect way to give your style a new-season shake-up, and the best part is you can be as bold as you want. The prints can completely clash or they can subtly compliment each other for a more dialled-down approach if you’re feeling less brave; it’s all about having fun.  It can, however, be a little daunting, so if you’re not sure how to mix and match your prints this season, we’ve put together a fool-proof guide to get you looking printastic.   Carven is the hot must-have brand of the moment, and we love this striped skirt. The shape is uber flattering – the flare will flatter your hips and the small waistband will draw you in – and the stripes are a classic print that you can rework season after season. Carven striped skirt, £305, available at Matches. BUY NOW!   This vibrant blue blouse will be ideal in warmer weather, and the punchy pansy print offers a colourful contrast to the striped skirt without being overwhelming – just make sure you tuck it in to flatter your figure. Blue pansy print shirt, £38, available at Topshop. BUY NOW!   If you’re being bold with prints in your outfit, a simple pair of shoes will suffice. And no one does simple – but sexy – plain courts like Christian Louboutin. This nude pair will lengthen your legs in ways you never thought possible. Go on, splash out. Love or Hate: Emma Cook jewelled jellyfish cardigan

When I was growing up I spent many a happy summer on holiday in North Wales. I loved the ice creams, charming British beaches and woke up every morning excited about the day ahead. This is apart from one year, when I was about five years old, and was playfully running along the beach with my sister. All of a sudden I felt an almighty pain in my foot. Looking down, it became apparent that I had been stung by a jellyfish. Not the most pleasant experience for a five-year-old; I spent the rest of the holiday avoiding the beach and in a foul mood. This is why I’m not that taken with Emma Cook’s jewelled jellyfish cardigan. I really like Emma Cook and animal appliqués are delightfully quirky, providing the animal is cute – like a rabbit, panda or kitten. But this jellyfish is not cute in any manner. For me, there is nothing attractive about a slimy jelly-like fish with tentacles! Ok, perhaps I am being jellyfish-ist, I mean, they must have feelings too, right? But still, there is no way I would walk around in this. Perhaps jellyfish enthusiasts out there might think this wool cardigan is the bees knees. And if, perchance, they are reading this, I would say rock it in style with skinny jeans or leather shorts. Personally, though, I’ll stick with my Sonia Rykiel jewelled heart cardies. Emma Cook Jewelled Jellyfish Cardigan, £315, available at Matches. BUY NOW!

Queen of Hoxton’s rooftop relaunch

If you’re out and about in London this summer, we suggest you stop by the Queen of Hoxton in the heart of Shoreditch for a beer and a burger on its brand new (and frankly brilliant) rooftop. With a panoramic view of the city, the Queen’s rooftop terrace has been refurbished to reveal a part Victorian garden, part urban retreat playground, perfect for the summer months a-coming with a burn-forever BBQ and rumshack serving sip-able Pimms and dangerously delicious cocktails. And with palm trees, benches, bean bags, festoon lights and a house Ukelele band for a soundtrack, it’s bound to become East London’s favourite sun-filled hangout. We popped along for it’s preview launch last week and are already planning our next visit, if only to sit by the water fountain, sup cider and watch the city workers walk below. Oh, and did we mention it has beach huts for toilets? We know. The Queen of Hoxton’s rooftop relaunch is open now – find more about it here and we’ll see you in the sun soon. Love or Hate: Charlotte Olympia Tutti Frutti pumps

Every year, around this time, I get a sudden urge to go away on holiday. I don’t care where, as long as it’s hot, has a beach and is miles away. All my friends are the same – suddenly a unanimous desire to jump on a plane and head of somewhere warm this summer has surfaced. I blame all the new summer clothes in the shops. I mean they were made to go away on holiday in, right? This is why my eyes were instantly drawn to Charlotte Olympia’s Tutti Frutti pumps. They’re so kitch, resistance is futile. It’s just too hard not to love them. Made from leather and suede bananas, strawberries and pineapples, they’re statement shoes to say the least. I love the way they get me in the mood for summer and they are, without doubt, the perfect holiday shoe. I would team them with a plain white sun dress and let the pumps do all the talking, or I’d go retro and pair with a white broderie Anglaise blouse tucked into high-waisted patterned shorts. All I need to do now is book my holiday… Charlotte Olympia Tutti Frutti pumps, £695, available at Matches. BUY NOW!

Lunchtime buy: Lanvin flat sandals

Whilst we love the Lanvin for H&M range, we don’t think there’s anything better than owning the original, and if your purse strings can’t stretch to the luxury label’s beautiful dresses, try these flat sandals instead. Neutral footwear is the perfect pared-down finish to any outfit, and these powder-toned sandals are spot on accessories for this season’s colourblock and floral trends. They might be a neutral colour, but their detailing is stand-out, with brass and black studs giving them a gladiator edge. Plus, a toe thong and ankle strap see these sandals are extra secure for ploughing through the sand on the beach. Wear them with a pretty playsuit or a white floaty dress to show them off in style. Who wore it best? Diane Kruger and Kate Bosworth in Dolce & Gabbana

And so the fash-clashes continue as we see a lace style-off in L.A between a sultry Diane Kruger at the premiere of her latest film Unknown and Kate Bosworth at Nylon’s Magazine’s March issue party, where both actresses wore a spring 2011 Dolce & Gabbana embellished lace mini. Diane’s classically elegant effort could’ve won her a fashion Oscar, opting for a smooth, low-slung bun, nude Brian Atwood ‘Maniac’ pumps and minimal accessories. Kate, on the other hand, dressed her looser-fitting version in typically pared down style, teaming it with messy beach hair, black ankle boots and a khaki cargo jacket. We think they both look pretty darn amazing, but, naturally, there can only be one winner in the inevitable who-styled-it-right fight. So whose look are you digging? Chic and sleek à la Diane, or eclectically edgy like Kate? Cast your votes below! [poll id=”66″]

First look: Burberry Prorsum’s SS11 campaign

It’s a well known fact that luxury British label Burberry Prorsum is no stranger to haute heritage clothing – after all, nothing screams London style like a good tailored trench – so it comes as no surprise that it’s chosen the great British landscape to play backdrop in its latest campaign for SS11. But with Emma Watson and Rosie Huntingdon-Whiteley nowhere to be seen, Burberry’s swapped its fashion-forward ambassadors in favour of up-coming British models Cara Delevingne (Poppy’s younger sister, who’s biggest feat so far has been ASOS, FYI) and Jacob Young to kick start its summer satorials. Shot by world renowned photographer Mario Testino, the images see the two models looking nonchalant on a rather dismal looking Brighton beach – we suspect those pebbles weren’t the most pleasurable of props – and aim to give you the total Burberry experience by showcasing everything from its Prorsum, London, Brit and accessories collections together. Phew. But it doesn’t end there – the evolving summer campaign is the first of its kind for Burberry, with new faces rolling out each month from now until May, giving surely one of the most coveted platforms for young models-in-the-making. “We wanted to create a dynamic, evolving campaign that reflects the diversity of our broad global consumer, revealing new British cast members each month, all with their own identity, embodying the different attitudes of the Burberry guy and girl,” says Christopher Bailey. “We shot the campaign on Brighton beach to celebrate the great British outdoors and our history of supporting emerging talent and to bring to life the emotion behind protection from the elements.’’ An interesting concept indeed. A somewhat nautical theme also spread throughout the line, with tasselled boat shoes and oversized beach bags sticking around for another sunshine-inspired season, alongside some rather attractive mauve court shoes – perfect for those summertime garden parties. And whilst we’re on the subject of evening wear, just take a look at these sophisticated white and blue patent clutches for strolling by the British sea side. London Fashion Week SS11: House of Holland screening

Saturday not only saw House of Holland’s Spring/Summer 2011 show, but also the launch of the new Blackberry Torch 9800- as promoted by Henry himself in an exclusive post-catwalk screening. My Fashion Life, amongst other bloggers, were treated to a breezy Holland swanning into the upstairs room of his namesake pub (where he had his 21st birthday, apparently) an hour late, having gone for a stiff drink after the well-received show closed. Still, to be kept waiting by Henry isn’t too disheartening- as he’s soon delighting us all with his charm and fashion quips(apparently Aggy left his show stuffing a standout leaf motif jumpsuit into her bag). He quickly played us all a video of the show, and it’s clear Henry and his House of Holland girls are all growing up- there’s new silhouettes in the form of flared trousers and razor sharp pleated skirts, and long line column dresses a la Aggy’s new favourite look. Henry told us how the House of Holland consumer is more “cocktail party than squat party” these days, and that the Miami beach style collection, complete with marabou doughnut earrings and banana leaf prints, perfectly fits this glamourous transition. Of course she’s still as fun as ever- clips of Jaime Winstone bopping to the tunes on the front row gave a great context to Holland’s fringe overlays and curtain tassel accents strutting down the runway. We loved the metallic pleat skater peices, and batwing denim shirts- very accessible stuff from Mr Holland this year it seems. Greens, aquamarine, gold and purple all hinted at a disco vibe, and overall we were chuffed to get a sneak peak at the man (and team)’s work. “Me too, this is the first time I’ve seen it, “ he looks a tad bashful and nervous in his seat […]

Five minutes with fashion designer Esteban Cortazar

You might remember him more recently for leaving Emanuel Ungaro when Lindsay Lohan was appointed, but you’d be wrong to think that’s Esteban Cortazar’s defining moment. At the ripe age of 26, he’s had his own fashion label, has headed a major French fashion house, has dressed industry insiders and the A-list elite alike, and famously brought Cindy Crawford out of her modelling retirement. And yes, we did say he was only 26. Born in Colombia but spending much of his childhood in Miami, a 12-year-old Cortazar found himself surrounded by the fast-paced flurry of the city’s style scene and a fashion fascination was born – but little did he know his dream of one day becoming a designer would result in him becoming one of the industry’s biggest success stories. In 2002, Esteban’s eponymous label made its runway debut to critical acclaim – one year later, he brought Cindy Crawford out of her modelling retirement when she agreed to open and close his spring/summer 2004 show (the pair had formed quite the friendship after eating chocolate covered strawberries together when he was 13, but more on that later), and a further four years on, he would hold the helm at the house of Ungaro. His love of the feminine form fused with his passion to create cool, intricately-individual pieces had made him a hit with fashion fans across the globe, but like any good story, he’s not without his controversy. Last year, after breathing new life into the classic label, Cortazar hung his creative cap at Ungaro when Lindsay Lohan was brought on board to give the brand publicity – he is, after all, an esteemed designer, and one that probably doesn’t want to be associated with nipple tassels any day of the week. But fast-forward to today and […]

Five minutes with Wayne Hemingway, co-founder of Vintage at Goodwood

It’s been a while since the fashion world last heard from Wayne Hemingway. Red or Dead, the label he started with his wife, Geraldine, was one of the most iconic British fashion lines of the 90s, and although the label is still going, their attentions have been significantly diverted. Most recently the couple have been collaborating with leading architects on model houses for the Scottish Housing expo in the highlands and revamping the Boscombe seafront by the beach in Bournemouth. Last year they even created a garden for the Chelsea Flower Show. But this summer the Hemingways are back on the fashion scene once again and making a very loud splash with one of their most ambitious projects yet. Their summer festival, Vintage at Goodwood, which celebrates the best of British music, film, food, art and, most importantly, fashion, launches in a few weeks with a full weekend of what promises to be a vintage fashion lover’s wet dream. Lily Allen will launch her new vintage clothing business at the festival and Zandra Rhodes, Hardy Amies and Pearl and Dasiy Lowe are all hosting events. They’re building a temporary high street filled with glorious shops including Cath Kidston, John Lewis, a Penguin Books library and the world’s largest vintage market. And the highly eclectic live music line up is equally exciting. With the buzz around the festival mounting, Wayne, who says he has never been so busy in his life, kindly spared us five minutes to answer all our questions… Why did you decide to launch Vintage at Goodwood? Because it’s needed. There’s a gap. Everything we have ever done over the years has been a reaction to a product we feel is missing in the market. When we started Red or Dead we felt that there was a gap […]

Five minutes with Barbara Hulanicki

Legend isn’t a word we like to throw around lightly, but it’s the only word we see fit to describe Barbara Hulanicki – a woman who, alongside her husband, changed the face of British fashion in the Sixties. After starting her career as an illustrator, Barbara Hulanicki shot to success with Biba, the iconic fashion store, almost half a century ago and she’s since trod many waters in several different shores – fashion design in Britian, Brazil and Japan, makeup, numerous collaborations and interior design in Miami. That’s where she currently resides, with her hugely successful interiors company, and has been credited with doing as much for the architecture scene over there as she has done for fashion here. More recently, however, she’s the subject of a feature film, Beyond Biba, which charts her incredible life from her humble beginnings to her soaring success. After grabbing a copy of the film, we caught up with Barbara Hulanicki to find out more about this often over-looked but undeniably talented designer. First of all Barbara, congratulations on Beyond Biba! Yes, well, I had nothing to do with it – it was the lads who did it all. How did it come about? Well that came about because Louis’s [Price, director] mother used to work for me in the Sixties and Seventies at Biba, then she just rang me up and said could Louis come and film you in Miami while you work? So I said yes, why not? And I thought it was just an interview actually, I didn’t realise it was going to be so much fun and games. Well it’s fantastic. We’ve seen it a couple of times now and we love it. Oh do you? Fabulous. I try not to watch it – I get very cross with myself […]

Top Ten: Beauty Products to take on Holiday

With the famous summer holiday fast approaching, shops are filling their shelves with bikinis, sun creams and things designed to take our money and replace our bathroom cabinet with travel non-essentials! Now, anyone who has ever been forced to pay Ryan Air’s over-weight charges knows it’s not practical to take your 500ml shampoo and matching conditioner on a 5 day trip, but are travel-minis really a must? What can we do (or learn to do) without? We tell you what we’re taking on holiday this year…. 1. The only travel mini, I’m sanctioning money being spent on this year is DKNY’s Be Delicious – but only because it comes in a rollerball, is small enough to get through security check in and even comes in it’s own plastic wallet – no tacky airport bags for me! And the best thing – I no longer have to lug table sized perfume in my wallet sized handbag! 2. Abandon your usual giant size, pound busting shampoo and shower gel and switch to empty bottles! No, I’m not suggesting you start saving water by skipping showers – just pour your normal product into empty travel sized bottles for a 2-in-1 – saving on space and money! 3. Revlon’s New Pedi-expert is like foot A & E!! A kit guaranteed to leave your toes holiday worthy; clip, smooth and file before you go away – but to avoid any holiday mishaps, take the nail file with you – ragged edges are not flip-flop worthy!! 4. You wouldn’t be going on holiday if you didn’t have to spend a little money on this skin-saving product – sun screen! This year I’m using Lancaster Sun Sport Express Mist, because it halves my application time with its absorption technology and resistance to sweat and water! 5. Even sunscreen doesn’t stop my […]

Festival special: Our practical guide to festival beauty!

The sun’s out (once every three days), bare legs are finally making an appearance and lipgloss is making a comeback – it has to mean one thing – Festival season is about to hit! Whether it be Bestival, Wireless or Glastonbury, they’re all guaranteed to include long, booze induced days, countless long-lost laughs, hundreds of cringeworthy photos and a number of grooming issues! Stinky toilets, smelly armpits, and running mascara all form part of the joy of the festival experience – but surely there is something we can do to make the experience as gruesome-free as possible? And like any well phrased question has an answer – MFL has a product (or a cupboard full of them) for every occasion! Let’s start with skin… Forget layers of foundation and multiple concealers – the real secret to being a festival hottie is not a face like a market stall – cluttered and congested, but clean, glowing skin. The extreme conditions – lots of people, a sweaty environment, galleons of alcohol, sleepless nights and constant sun exposure is going to take its toll on your face pretty quickly – so by minimalising the things on it you’re also cutting down the chance of a mass breakout mid song! So, to get that clean, glowing look – use MAC’s Strobe Cream – it’ll not only give dull skin a lift after a sleepless night, but will also make your skin brighter and tighter under the harsh glare of the sun! Don’t forget to take sunscreen – even if it does rain – you can still burn under a cloudy sky – we recommend Lancaster Sun Sport Express Mist because of its water resistance capabilities! Oh and for panda eyes – use Origins GinZing refreshing eye cream – it’ll soon reduce the puffiness and dark circles […]

Brand spanking new beauty products to lust over!

With new products coming out all the time – moisturiser, massage oil and mascara all clump together to create a big bunch of things that I know exist and should be doing great things for my hair and skin, but I simply don’t understand (or have the time to learn)!  In an attempt to look better, feel better and be better, we’ve gone through all latest beauty products – to bring you the crème de la crème – more simply put, the ones actually worth spending money on! Philip’s Lumea is the answer to the irritating habit we call shaving and the pain of waxing. Exclusive to Boots, it’s the d-i-y way to instant laser treatment!! Whilst quite pricey at £400 – it’s a sure way to say goodbye to unwanted hair – forever!! It uses IPL technology to kill the root of the hair and whilst this sounds painful – it’s not. Think of it as a static shock that’s going to leave you silky smooth (after 4 treatments) forever!! This second product is by far my favourite – diamonds may be a girl’s best friend – but 22 carat gold in your lip gloss is whole new playing field! No 7’s Limited edition Sun Drenched Lip glosses have exactly this – gold flecks that you apply to your lips turning the Emperor’s New clothes from fairy tale to fact. At £10 each, they’re only available until 13th July, so get them while you can!! Going for gold – not quite as literally as No7, but still managing to turn your skin from pearly white to sun kissed and bronze is Rodial’s Brazillian Tan Daily. The slow build up is the perfect way to avoid sun streaked skin and the coconut smell leaves you thinking, little umbrella, pina colada, […]
