Art Over Function: The Statement Shoe

If the catwalks for Spring 08 are any indication, owning a pair of “statement shoes” will be the biggest fashion essential for the upcoming months. With sky-high heels that are more art than functional and with practicality completely gone out the window, designers have taken footwear to unchartered territory incorporating incredible levels of creativity and in some cases, bizarreness.

Dropping major coin on the latest ‘it’ bag or a classic outfit can be justified by frequent use or longevity. But with statement shoes, minus supermodels and celebrities, who else could stomach spending $600 to over $1000 on a pair of shoes to be worn only once or twice?

I personally would rather have an amazing new bag or ten pairs of more practical shoes than have people gawk at my shoe-art. Where do you stand on the statement shoe trend?

I’m a shoe person, and actually most of my shoes are the ’statement shoe’ as you describe, I like to think of them as little pieces of art. They all fall in the $400-$1200 range, but I love each and every one of them! I think that they are worth so much more than a handbag or a pair of jeans. A great shoe will last, but clothing wears and fades and I’m just not a purse person. I”m actually looking into the Valli neon platform and the YSL stars (pictured), and the Zanotti sky-high platform cutout as my next ones to buy!

I’d state my shoes any day, but not with that kind (those pictured). I think the shoes (like any other outfit element) should integrate, not set everything apart.
