The Victoria’s Secret Angels seem to be taking over the spring/summer 2012 ad campaigns – and this time it’s the turn of Adriana Lima to pose pretty for Donna Karan.
We say pretty, but the words ‘moody’ and ‘sultry’ immediately spring to mind for the campaign which was reportedly inspired by Haiti.
This is the first time Adriana Lima has posed for Donna Karan, but we think this could be the beginning of a regular partnership as the designer sang the Brazilian model’s praises after shooting the campaign with her.
“I have never used her before, and I am totally in love with her,” Donna Karan told WWD. “She shows the heart and soul of Haiti.”
Donna Karan has quite the soft spot for the island after regularly visiting it since the devastating earthquake that hit last year, and has made no secret of the fact that there are Haitian influences in her recent work.
The black and white infusions in Donna Karan’s spring/summer 2012 collection – and the corresponding ad campaign – were reportedly inspired by the work of Haitian artist Philippe Dodard. It therefore makes perfect sense that the campaign – which was shot by Donna Karan’s photographer friend Russell James – took place in the southern Haiti town of Jacmel.
Keep your eyes peeled for the campaign, due to break in fashion magazines in March.

Then there’s the idea that perhaps readers are seeing too much in the picture and assuming because the main focus is on a white girl and the background on young Haitian boys that somehow they must be subservient to her. Really? What if the boys had been placed in the foreground, would the same comments of racial imperialism come into play?
