Originating from a career in advertising, Kal Kaur Rai began designing clothes as a hobby. However after supplying a boutique on a sale or return basis and completely selling out, Kal knew it was time to take her hobby seriously. Launched in 1997, the label now boasts a clientele of Beyonce, Mariah Carey and Victoria Beckham and is stocked in over 70 independent stores including Topshop. 2004 saw Kal Kaur Rai adding to her CV the honorary title of Winner of the young achiever of the year at the Asian business awards.

Whom would you credit as being an inspiration?

Women who understand the power of dress and style are an inspiration to me.

What do you have in store for us design wise for Spring/Summer 2005?

For S/S I am doing an eclectic mix of long boho skirts and ethnic inspired tops. Lots of embellishment and colour.

What one piece of advice would you give to a budding fashion designer?

Your finger must be on the pulse at all times. The fashion industry is like a roller coaster ride, you have to be ready to take the rough with the smooth. Each season is like starting a new business. If you have talent, determination and belief you can succeed.
