Facial Cream: Skin MD Natural

I have real issues with facial creams, too greasy and I break out in spots, too light and my skin feels uncomfortable and dry. Elemis Absolute Night Cream, is the only moisturizer my skin has welcomed with open arms, but being that its a tad pricey, I prefer to buy a bottle when my skin is in bad shape and instead use Boots Cleansing lotion, day to day. It does the job but I tend to break out in spots now and again. Being that my skin can be quite fussy I’m quite reluctant to test out new creams but when I read the press release for SKIN MD Natural, curiosity got the better of me and I decided to bite the bullet and try out a sample.

Spend or Splurge?

I love that fashion is, to a certain extent, getting over itself. We all know what it’s like to covet the latest Chloe bag or a gorgeous Stella McCartney dress, but know that spending this month’s (and possibly next month’s) rent on a single item is probably not the wisest idea. Designers have made concessions by coming out with less expensive lines (Michael by Michael Kors, Marc by Marc Jacobs, etc), but $300 for a dress is beyond the budget of most women. So, should you have to have a lot of money to look good? The answer is a definitive ‘no.’ Designers seem to be realizing this too, through collaborations with the Target GO line and Vera Wang’s latest endeavor with Kohl’s. Take the jeweled detailing on the Vera by Vera Wang shell, $54, $36.99; it encompasses a burgeoning trend, looks absolutely luxe and costs less than a monthly Metrocard.

My Style

In the My Style section of the October issue of Elle we’re treated to 11 lovely ladies who prove yet again that fashion isn’t about following the rules; instead, it’s more about knowing what rules can be bent, or outright broken. These women know that individual style is no longer confined to a singular adjective: the radiant Savannah Miller admits to a fondness for “Little House on the Prarie-esque dresses, all while clad in a pair of killer Barbara Bui boots and pieces from the fashion line she is designing with actress-sister Sienna.

Perfectly Patent

I’ve been surfing around my fave online stores looking for a perfect pair of patent shoes to satisfy my current obsession and have whittled the options down to these two gorgeous beauties. I can only choose one as I’m trying to save for a holiday and just cant justify splurging on both. The problem is I adore both of them! I love the velvet laces on the Rupert Sanderson black pumps, £340, Net-a-porter and I love the colour of the Moschino open toe shoe boots, $460, Shopbob. Oh decisions, decisions! I guess price will have to be the deciding factor and with the dollar being so weak at the moment I’m going to go for the shoe boots!

Fragrances: The Olsen Tweens

Mini moguls and queens of the tweens, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen have packed a lot into 20 years, achieving more success than most of us would hope to see in a lifetime. This week they were named the highest earning stars under the age of 21, beating Daniel Radcliffe of Harry Potter fame and Lindsay Lohan of, well, we’re not sure really. Of course it’s the paparazzi photos of the twins’ perfectly dishevelled hair and artfully mismatched designer accessories that seems to have got them noticed on this side of the pond – but personal style is not all they’ve been turning their hand to of late.

Ben de Lisi: Illuminating The Catwalk

After spending the morning at Pure London trying to find as many new brands as possible to share with you guys I literally had to run to the Ben de Lisi show for London Fashion Week and was totally worn out by the time I arrived. I do not recommend lugging 5 bags around on the London underground, and for once I was grateful that punctuality is not fashion weeks strongest point as I had a chance to fully compose myself. When the show opened with a model striding down in a fuchsia strapless voluminous dress with a high waisted velvet belt, I knew I was in for a treat! De Lisi showed a luxurious collection of evening wear. Emphasis was on decadence, colours were illuminous and the gowns were show stopping. Attention was drawn to the neck which was either ruched or detailed with sequins. High necked dresses were often sleeveless and the collection wasn’t short of plunging necklines. Backs were on show in low cut and strapless dresses often decorated with flowered decolletage or swirled beading. Dresses were either mid or floor length. The shorter teamed with tights and the most gorgeous black boots with a thick bronze buckle (I tried to take a few pictures but those damn models just wouldn’t stay still! I managed to get a clear enough image though…see below) whilst the longer gowns were paired with rustic gold platforms. I favoured some of the simpler styles, such as the belted cardigans and the dress below, the sequinned gold top half worked perfectly with the velvet bottom. However I wasn’t fond of the gold and fuchsia pink leafed prints which found their way to a couple of the longer dresses and a pair of trousers, which I have to add, was modelled by the […]

Angeline Tournier

“I want to make shoes that are beautifully designed and finely made, but without an over the top price tag” If your feet are on the larger side, then you’ll know a thing or two about the difficulty in not only finding your shoe size (especially in the sales) let alone actually finding cute shoes which don’t look gigantic. Well lawyer turned footwear designer Angeline Tournier can relate and as a result of her frustrations set up Angeline Tournier London, specialising in designing and manufacturing footwear ranging from sizes EU36 right up to EU44 and which look great on big feet as well as small. Paris department store, Le Bon Marche exclusively bought Angeline’s debut collection and she’s just recently released her spring/summer 2006 collection…. What do you enjoy the most about your job? Four things 1) Working for myself, 2) fulfilling a lifelong dream to create shoes available in larger sizes, 3) being creative, 4) no longer being stuck in an over-air-conditioned office, wearing “formal” clothes and spending my time analysing and sorting out other people’s legal problems, and doing a job with little creative outlet. And like the least? Working for myself means I never get “time off”, I tend to work longer hours than before and I can not “get away” from work, even on week-ends and holidays. Can you tell us a bit about the design process involved in shoe design? The design process takes place over a number of months. I kind of visualise shoes or boots I’d like to wear myself, I sketch my initial ideas, sometimes I get inspiration from a trim off an item of clothing, a type of leather I see at a leather trade show or other totally unrelated topic. A few weeks before I need to submit my drawings […]

Interviews: Vicky Haynes

Name: Victoria Haynes Occupation: Fashion journalism student, wannabe writer and travel addict. Favourite designers: Matthew Williamson, Anna Sui and Alice Temperley. I love embellished, embroidered, floaty designs. I’m a bit of a hippy really. Which trends do you think will dominate fashion this spring? I think there’ll be a lot of white around, it’s a summer classic that keeps rearing its head. And I think shorts will still be hanging around from Winter, but they’ll be teamed with flip flops instead of boots. I think accessories are going to be big and bold.

Kate binges excessively

“In fashion, excess is not for creative purposes, whatever people may say. “It’s about escapism. You just have to get out of it to deal with it. I think that’s what a lot of people in fashion that I know do it for. I know that’s why I did it.” – Kate Moss Kate Moss currently the face of Dior and Rimmel will surely be suffering much embarrassment today as she finds herself amidst a major scandal which could seriously harm her career. British Newspaper the Daily Mirror has published shocking pictures of Kate snorting a huge amount of cocaine through a rolled up banknote. The binge took place in a West London recording studio with boyfriend Doherty and his friends, during a recording session of the new Babyshambles album.

New York, New York

New York was a mixture of glam (Matthew Williamson) boho (Marc by Marc Jacobs) and conservative (Roland Mouret). These 3 trends seem to be dominating fashion at the moment with boho in the lead followed by glam. I cant say I’ve seen anyone under 40 pushing the conservative/secretary look which they tried to inflict upon us last Autumn/Winter. However it’s a possibility it may catch on this Autumn for those who become sick of dressing like a Sienna/Kate clone.

Five Minutes With Rhian Benson

If I could use just one word to describe Rhian Benson, it would be eloquent. Her voice is so calming and self assured, making it easy to warm to her. Born to a Welsh mother and a Ghanaian father, Rhian bravely left a career in investment banking to pursue what truly lay in her soul – “her love of music”. Currently preparing for the worldwide release of her debut album “Gold Coast”, Rhian already has her own lifestyle-oriented TV series featuring celebrity guests, interviews and music videos, of the same name airing on BET. With a diary jam packed of promoting and performing, Rhian took some time out with My Fashion Life to say how she feels……about fashion that is. How important is fashion to you as an artist? I think it’s important in that, whether you like it or not you present a certain image when you get on the stage, and sometimes fashion can help to explain your approach to music. My music is very jazzy and soulful and mellow. And there’s a lot of importance in the messages and so when I get on stage I like to look, a little bit ethereal, wearing stuff that almost seems fantasy like, such as silk and chiffon. You’ve lived in India and Ghana for a while, would you say both countries influence your sense of style? Oh definitely, definitely. I love ethnic jewellery and shell earrings at the moment. I think that it’s a clever way of making a statement about who you are and where you come from. You’re style in the video for “Say How I Feel” was very reminiscent of Billie Holiday, was that your choice? YES it was, it was. We wanted to do it in a jazz club because the song was quite jazzy […]

And now you can too…! “ I cannot wait for the next season of Sex and the City. Glamour has a little feature on how to steal SJP’s style. This has to be one of my fave outfits from the new season probably cause its more of my personal style. If I could wear one outfit forever it would be a cool top, with my jeans tucked into my comfy boots…”Style without pain”

Fast Fashion: McFashion!

“We are consumers of McFashion. Fashion has begun to resemble fast food: fast, disposable, easy, unintimidating, entertaining and homogenous. Just as McDonald’s has taken over the globe, dishing out the uniformity and consistency of their burgers and fries, mass-market clothing retailers have succeeded in spreading a similar message: predictability in fashion.” Is Fashion resembling fast food??? I completely agree with the statement that high street fashion is becoming like fast food but for me like McDonalds it’s addictive. We are now able to purchase seasonal trends at less than 1/2 the price. Yes like the Big Mac you can get the same top in H&M in most countries. I once bought a jumper in Amsterdam from H&M, thinking it would’nt be in London but to my horror it was and I felt completely un-original. But at the end of the day when you go to McDonalds and not a Michelin Star Restaurant you know what to expect. I went to H&M, I wasn’t buying couture. There are certain essentials you have to pay for such as a good pair of boots, a winter coat and a LBD but for everything else there is McFashion.
