Paris Fashion Week: Viktor & Rolf AW09

One of the highlights of last year was the Viktor and Rolf exhibition. It was a magical walk through the story of their designs and told rather wonderfully through giant dolls. Well this Autumn/Winter 09 show continued their flair for the creative and sent down models painted as white as porcelain dolls in clothes that were startlingly beautiful.

Paris Fashion Week: Gareth Pugh AW09

It was a video presentation as opposed to the catwalk for Gareth Pugh at Paris fashion week. Starring model Natasa Vojnovic and created by cinematographer Ruth Hogben, the powerful footage communicated clearly why Pugh’s dramatic collections are so appealing , they exude empowerment. And during a time when strength is oozing from the catwalks Pugh’s recent collection fits in nicely. Black of course was Pugh’s colour of choice. Dresses and leather trousers with spikes, high-waisted trousers, metallic dresses, long skirts and capes were all worn by Natasa with thigh high boots, as she moves to the music.

Cummerbunds Turn Practical

Hark, men’s fashion is exuding a renewed optimism, with jarring silhouettes and inspired tailoring shaking up tradition. The cummerbund is a case in point. When Stuckey & Murray reinvented the tuxedo’s cummerbund to take on a more detachable utility, I applauded its progressiveness. Since then, I’ve seen the cummerbund take on dizzying new heights in men’s wear courtesy of Marc by Marc Jacobs and Burberry Prorsum. Conventional use of the cummerbund has been largely confined to formal appearances alongside a dinner jacket. However, Jacobs and Bailey switched formality for exuberance in the form of expressive patterned cummberbunds that would leave Alan Flusser sweating in his boots.

Christopher Kane breathes new life into Versus

Its’ been 20 years since Gianni Versace first launched the diffusion line Versus and 5 years since it’s last instalment. But in Milan on Sunday the label was relaunched with the help of fashion’s darling, Christopher Kane. For AW09, Donatella Versace recruited the Scottish designer to produce a capsule collection of accessories for Versus and true to form Kane delivered. The collection which Kane describes as “tough and glamour, effervescent and rock ‘n’ roll, includes leather structured totes, handbags, evening clutches, platform ankle boots, gladiator sandals and cut out high heeled sandals. Most items are embellished with crystals for heightened glamour and retain an edge of toughness with lots of metal hardware. Chunky steel jewelry and chain necklaces also make up the collection which was inspired by three main visible themes ,the diamond, the geometric pattern of the labyrinth (most evident on the handbags) and the Moschettone. On her choice of partner, Donatella Versace said: “Christopher is a highly creative young designer and his work impressed me from the very beginning. His Rock’n Roll style is very powerful, glamorous and sensual, perfectly in tune with the mood of Versus, which was always intended for young people who want clothes that project a personal style that is constantly evolving” Spring 2010 will see the launch of both men’s wear and women’s wear. Alexa Chung is one well-dressed lady

The Shockwaves NME awards took place on Wednesday and there were some surprising winners and losers. But one winner we are most proud of is Alexa Chung. Nominated for Best Dressed the gorgeous lady was up against her own boyfriend Alex Turner, Brandon Flowers, Noel Gallagher and Noel Fielding. So not only did she beat her rockstar beau, but also won in an all male category. Well done Alexa! She is of course the most stylish of all those nominees, and well as a leader of the fashion pack a style winner every day. She turned up looking fabulous in a very cute black playsuit with lace ruffle collar and ankle boots. This is a girl who knows how to dress. But one woman who doesn’t know how to is Amy Winehouse, she was awarded the worst dressed award. I can’t say I’m hugely surprised, she has failed to be seen in clothes for a very long time. But it wasn’t just Alexa looking lovely at the awards, a special mention must go to style icon in the making Jaime Winstone who was seen in a fabulous hot pink mini and feathered ruff. Pixie looked as gorgeous as ever, true to her punky style she wore a very sexy pair of tights with a great studded leather jacket and framed handbag. Highlights from the awards will be shown on Channel 4 tonight at 7.30pm. If you want to see the full list of winners check out

London Fashion Week: Giles AW09

Is there nothing that Giles Deacon can’t do? He has produced yet another stellar catwalk collection. The inspiration behind the show was Giles’ days at Art School, which is why he treated us to creative, punky finishes and expressive outfits. Fabulous hats by Stephen Jones just added to the drama, not forgetting those unbelievable, drool worthy thigh high boots by Christian Louboutin.

London Fashion Week: Victim AW09

Referencing Italian horror director Dario Argento’s ‘Phenomena’ (1985) in the pre text to ‘Victim Wonder’ designer Mei Hui Lei immediately gave us the impression that this was going to be a powerful runway of dread and seduction. ‘Did you ever wonder why there are so few beautiful villains?’ she questioned. In ‘Victim Wonder’, Mei Hui Lei presented her terrifying, yet irresistible muse: ‘Victim’s punk Lolita’.

Chloe’s Sevigny’s new line for Opening Ceremony is revealed

In the UK Opening Ceremony is seen as one of those legendary stores. I guess in much the same way that Dover Street Market is for non-Londoners. With the launch of the e-commerce site, we thought it couldn’t get any more exciting. Now we could get a piece of the iconic store for ourselves without the pricey airfare. Well it just got better, Chloe Sevigny has just revealed her new line for Opening Ceremony at London Fashion Week, and it’s going to be sold here too! I loved the last line, especially those floral bodiced dresses, although Topshop were quick on very good look-alikes. At the Double Club on Sunday, Chloe showed us her new kooky line. And her inspiration? Well how about designer Miguel Adrover, mixed with a bit of James Dean, bit of old-school preppy and “gay lumberjack. Taking a note from Stefano Pilati, the range is considered unisex. Boyfriend blazers, leopard print cardigans and loose fit trousers make up this very stylish range. The footwear is also part of the range, in collaboration with Bass, those gorgeous strapped up shoe boots were created along with the loafers. And despite a hectic working life, it doesn’t look like Chloe is planning on giving up her designing any time soon. Explaining that “maybe I’d do a very small collection for one of the big luxury brands, but right now, Opening Ceremony is right-we have a shared aesthetic. So it looks like we can expect more from this lovely fashion pairing. Although I am a little concerned, if this collection is unisex does that mean those leather hotpants Chloe is sporting are actually intended for men? For any man reading this, do not attempt, you cannot get away with it, I repeat do not attempt. But on a final note, […]

London Fashion Week: Sado AW09

With some of the prettiest colour combinations I’ve seen, Carlotta Gherzi’s AW09 Sado collection featured simple silk pieces in grey, raspberry, orange and peach.  Prim puff sleeve blouses, boxy cropped jackets, and mini capes in yummy sherbet dip hues were worn with grey knee socks and raspberry platform ankle boots.  With a vaguely 70s feel to the show, Ali MacGraw in Love Story sprang to mind.

London Fashion Week: Peter Jensen AW09

Peter Jensen is the king of kooky style. There is always a grown up cutesy feel but without being sickly. This was a very unusual collection and felt slightly more spring/summer than autumn/winter. The theme was ladylike folk. A mixture of textures including crochet and knits were set against ladylike structures and knitted hats. There was a sense of optimism throughout and I am loving those over-the-knee boots.

London Fashion Week: Charles Anastase AW09

So what do you do, when you’ve put your best clothes on, your wearing staggering high heels, you’ve got your ticket in hand and then you have a door slammed in your face? This was my Charles Anastase experience today. After queuing for a while and having run from John Rocha, I was all ready with my ticket to get into the show. And after much waiting, and complaining of sore feet, we climbed the steps to enter, then the PRs turned and said they were now at full capacity, we couldn’t come in, and with that they closed the door. On the up side this meant I was on time for the next show, and after reviewing the images, I didn’t miss much. How to describe Charles Anastase Autumn/Winter 09? Oh I know, Peaches Geldof. I’m not sure I need to say any more. There was quite a nice striped oversized jumper, but it was no different from something you might pick up in Topshop. A velvet dress with floppy hat was quite cool, very Biba. But these were the only real highlights for they were lost in the mess of platform combat boots, ripped tights, gothic make up and what were in essence dull clothes. Could it get worse? Why of course it can, how do you do a model’s make up at one of the most anticipated shows? Do you go gothic? Romantic? Or maybe creative? Not if you’re Anastase, for he thought it was best to make it look like the models had covered their faces in mud. Nice. So the collection was mainly made up of baggy jeans, scrawled t-shirts, a bit of leopard print… Peaches’ wardrobe. But there was one must have item: see-through nylon trousers, my my, where can I get such wonderous […]

New York Fashion Week: Jill Stuart AW09

If it wasn’t for Paris & Nicky Hilton and cast members from Gossip Girl sending gaggling teenagers into mass hysteria, I would have sworn I was at London Fashion week two seasons ago. Jill Stuart sent out lots of lace, ivory chiffon ruffled dress, sheer blouses with billowy sleeves, black rock-chic tailcoats and fun flirty skirts. Most of the looks were finished off with a fedora embellished with a cute lace rose. Aside from a dominate black and ivory palette, shades of steel grey and lilac made a welcome appearance. The ankle boots were gorgeous. Overall the collection was girly but a bit more grown up.

Footwear’s getting cagey!

Stefano Pilati is something of a genius. Since his takeover of YSL in 2005, the fashion house has slowly transformed into one of the most influential of current times. I guess it is fair to say that this has been the case since the days of the late Yves Saint Laurent through to Tom Ford, but Pilati is making his mark in the fashion world with his ideas. Think of the much copied low crotch trouser , distinctly Pilati , and the Tribute shoe/boot (how I still pine for a pair) and you get an understanding.

Lobe & behold: Extreme earrings

G-Day Has Arrived: The Return of Gossip Girl

At last, the day we’ve all been waiting for; Gossip Girl returns this Wednesday at 9pm on ITV2! Reunited once more with Serena, Blair, Chuck, Nate, Dan, Vanessa and Jenny, I can barely contain my excitement at the prospect of another season of Upper East Side drama, dresses and dead-pan one-liners. Since it’s debut in 2007, Gossip Girl has gone global, with its young cast dominating our screens and magazines: Blake Lively is this month’s Vogue US cover girl, Chace Crawford is Leona Lewis’ leading man in her new music video, Taylor Momsen has been signed to IMG, and Ed Westwick is, eh, snogging Drew Barrymore. But it’s not the stars that have most of us in a frenzy, it’s the fashion.
