Shopping: Lulu and Red Bubble Jacket

While others are drooling over capes, military style jackets and duvet coats, we’re secretly lusting after this bubble jacket by Lulu and Red. Isn’t it just gorgeous? The ribbon detail adds a cute touch to what has got to be one of the finer jackets around at the moment. Granted it’s unlikely to keep us warm and cozy, especially with these ruthless winds. But it is a keeper for spring. £55 available at Lulu and Red

The Observer has awarded Jacobs, Style Icon of the Year 2007, even though its been confirmed that Victoria Beckham will be the new face of Marc Jacobs for Spring/Summer 08 (yes you read correctly). Interviews: Caroline Issa – Owner of Tank Magazine

Caroline Issa – owner of Tank Magazine – is known for her impeccable sense of style but fashion aside Caroline is also an astute entrepreneur. Being at the helm of such an innovative and influential publication means she’s always on the go and in the know. Here, Caroline takes some time out of her busy schedule to talk fashion, music, travel and more… Can you tell our readers a little bit about yourself, your background and how you came to own Tank Magazine? I actually studied business in Philadelphia as an undergraduate and moved to San Francisco after that as a strategic management consultant, working with fashion retailers and consumer brand companies on their business strategy. Working in the US and in Asia, I was then moved to work in London with a UK-based retailer before meeting my now-business partner, Masoud Golsorkhi who had started Tank magazine four years earlier. I found him to be an inspiring partner and thought, I’m young, when else can I become an entrepreneur with such an amazing opportunity and product. Five years later, I’m still here! Any thoughts on increasing Tank’s online presence and launching a blog? We have been debating in the office what we want Tank’s online presence to be. We currently have our own project, www.tank.tv which we started five years ago showing moving images online and has had shows at the Tate Modern and the ICA. Regarding our magazine’s online presence, we are aiming to launch something unique, which doesn’t just translate what the paper version is but adds a layer for the readers. Watch this space. Your job requires that you’re constantly on the go, travelling. But which destination is your favourite spot to just getaway? I love Singapore for the food, Beijing for the sights and Montreal for […]

Model Profile: Siri Tollerød

We all know the model’s version of the fairytale: willowy beauty is picked out amidst the masses for some ineffable quality and is immediately whisked off to grace the Fashion Week runways. The reality is often completely different, and many girls aspiring to be on the catwalks often never make it there—or they do, but never get the big campaign that will get them to the top level of modeling.

Polls: Chanel Rainbow Pump?

What girl doesn’t love Chanel? Classic and sophisticated, yet stylish, you usually can’t go wrong…or so we thought. For Spring ’08, Chanel introduced its platform patent-leather Rainbow Pump. With colourful stacked “Rubik’s Cube,esque heels and soles, the shoe reminds us of Rainbow Brite. We understand that women need to embrace bright colours in their wardrobes from time to time, but is it really necessary to embrace so many in so little time? Although something Chanel will always be on the wish list, we think its best to go ahead and save that small fortune for an item that reminds us a tad less of our favourite childhood sprite. What do you think? {democracy:9}

Halloween Special: Fashionistas as Vamps

This is a guest post by Valerie Stivers , freelance journalist and author of the novel Blood is the new Black. Her work has appeared in Time Out New York, Blender, Elle and various other fashion magazines. There’s a fun and easy way to see for yourself that vampirism is fashionable. Take a tube of red paint and a small paintbrush, and paint fangs on nearly any ad from any fashion magazine. Vogue, Marie Claire, Elle…it doesn’t matter. The fangs will look perfectly natural. When I first started writing Blood is the New Black, I saved tear-outs from magazines of models that looked particularly dead—or undead as the case may be—but then I stopped, because there were so many there was hardly a point.

Jennifer Connolly in Balenciaga

With fashion week barely over and on the brink of winter, Jennifer Connolly took to the premiere of her new movie “Reservation Road in this structured, floral print creation from Balenciaga’s collection for Spring Summer 2008.

A Jacobin Rebellion of a Rather Different Sort

Marc Jacobs has certainly not had a love affair with Paris. While living in the city as the creative director of Louis Vuitton, Jacobs struggled with everything from the foreign language to the lack of takeout food. But could recent events have him redesigning his previously shaky relationship with the city of lights? Jacobs is notorious for his punctuality, in fact, his Fall 2005 , Fall 2006 and Spring 2006 shows all began well behind schedule. But when his Spring 2008 presentation was two hours late, a public outcry erupted from editors and guests who felt that this time his tardiness was unforgivable. Suzy Menkes of the International Herald Tribune was especially venomous, suggesting in an interview with Women’s Wear Daily a startling desire to murder the designer. Marc’s response? Claiming to be fed up with New York, the designer is threatening to move his show to Paris next year.

Milan Fashion Week: Moschino

The catwalks in Milan consistently ooze sexiness every fashion week and the Spring 2008 collection from Moschino stayed true to form while retaining an element of mystery. Hemlines were short and plunging necklines were non-existent, dresses were shapeless and loose fits were the order of the day. The collection is filled with varied pieces from trapeze shaped dresses to jumpsuits, shorts and clear plastic anoraks which in my opinion weren’t such a good idea.

Milan Fashion Week: Gianfranco Ferre

Naturally many were looking forward to Ferre’s contribution to womenswear for Spring/Summer 2008 as it marked the final collection the designer worked on before he sadly passed away in June. The collection was completed by his design team and compromised structured figure flattering, easy-to-wear pieces that depicted Ferre’s unique and timeless perspective of fashion. Models stormed the mirrored catwalk wearing thick-soled shoes that matched the soft earth toned pieces presented and light, loose materials such as silk and cotton featured heavily along with one of autumn’s biggest trends, high waisted, wide legged trousers. It’s been debatable as to who would take over at Gianfranco Ferre however the announcement was finally made after the show and ex Bill Blass designer Lars Nilsson has been appointed the man for the job. Milan Fashion Week: Giorgio Armani

Inspiration for the Giorgio Armani collection came from close to home….South of Italy and Pantelleria….where Armani currently resides. His palette took us to the sea with a combination of water colors, fused light and deep shadows mixing natural and earth tones of beige putty and grey with translations of lava black and palm green. The collection consisted of long, sheer gowns and tunics with bright floral accents, while plunging v-neck bustier dress brought the myth of mermaids to life. Evening wear remained long and glamorous. Pleats, knots, and dashes added a soft ease and fluidity, while beaded detail, crystal adornment and embroidery injected a little sparkle. The collection relied heavily on the shawl-sheer, woven and metallic- to complete looks both for day and night.

London Fashion Week: Its a wrap!

According to the most recent edition of Drapers magazine, since the point of taking over at the British Fashion Council, 18 months ago, Helen Riva has managed to bring London Fashion Week – with the help of sponsors – from the point of nearly declaring bankruptcy to the brilliant success that it was this season. Seriously….even my Aunt who hasn’t really got a clue about fashion week informed me over the weekend of some of the highlights from the past week. So what does this mean? The PR was fantastic and the exciting buzz was felt by many! Apparently Riva, wants to put the swing back in to LFW and intends to make the event an important part of the “city’s cultural calendar” so I guess we can expect bigger and better things come February.

London Fashion Week: Caroline Charles, Ben De Lisi and Bora Aksu

Day one of London fashion week started on Saturday and by the end of the day my feet were killing me. Unfortunately I did not take my own advice but it was all worth it. So….it all kicked of for me at Caroline Charles, followed by Ben de Lisi, Bora Aksu and ended with Unconditional. Caroline Charles Caroline Charles was a disappointment. It was a confusing show with a lot of confused faces in the front row. (I didn’t intend that to rhyme I promise) The collection was filled with lots of kaftans, zebra prints, embellishments and straw hats. Granted….it was a mature collection but unfortunately a dated one.

RM by Roland Mouret

Roland Mouret is back. Under his new label RM (backed by Simon Fuller who also manages the Spice girls) Mouret presented a pleasant cruise collection for Spring 2008. I wish I could say how much I loved all 21 pieces which made up the line entitled Satellite. But unfortunately my feelings towards it remain relatively lukewarm. There were no show stopping pieces although I’m not too sure Mouret had the intention of “wowing us. Instead he kept the collection relaxed utilizing loose fabrics. I did like the way Mouret contrasted a relatively shapeless upper body with a playful lower half of the silhouette. The tulip shaped skirts were cute and perfect for a spring wardrobe. But just as I’d develop affection for certain looks he’d add a bulky scarf that simply looked out of place.

It’s a boy/girl thing!

I’m not really one for the transference of women’s fashion to the guys, in my opinion this should have stopped at the ‘man bag’; however it totally works the other way around! And judging from the looks which emerged from the spring catwalks, I’m not the only one who shares the same sentiment. Collections from the likes of Wunderkind, Stella McCartney and Paul Smith (as shown in the picture above) drew on basic masculine cuts to create ranges of tailored shirts, blazers and shorts especially for us girls. The great thing about each of these looks is their adaptability to different occasions, so whether you’re scheduled for an important lunch, followed by a meeting at the office then dinner and drinks with friends you can easily incorporate aspects from these styles into your day without having to rush home and change. Horsing around

After a lengthy debate with myself I can safely say that I liked the couture presentation from Felipe Olivera Baptista for Spring Summer 2007. It wasn’t love at first sight but after careful inspection, I became fond of his concept. Maintaining the spirit of his past collections he kept his palette clean with black, white and the addition of metallic silver. The collection seemed to be underlined by an eccentric equestrian theme reminiscent of Balenciaga which for me Baptista took to another level by fearlessly experimenting with horse shaped head wear and what appeared to resemble horse hair hanging in between jackets and draped over platforms. While I wasn’t too keen on either the head/foot wear I did like his use of volume and structure. Sleeves were consistently voluminous and his fondness for circular shapes prevailed into this season resulting in my favourite piece of the collection, this dimensional mid length dress. Winter Sun Beach Chic

In preparation for my own escape to the sun this winter I have been searching London high and low in pursuit of the perfect holiday wardrobe – no mean feat whilst still in the depths of winter. Ever the fashionista I am, taking inspiration from the Spring/Summer 07 catwalks, coveting neon brights teamed with creamy caramels a-la-Christopher Kane, whilst shimmery pale gold and light-as-air chiffons will come into their own with a golden tan. Braving the changing room after a Christmas season of serious indulgence is never a pleasant task, so the shopping destinations need to be all the more special to ease the struggle. For pure ambiance and experience, I head to Notting Hill, where my favourites are top-end boutiques Heidi Klein and Pistol Panties. Pistol Panties bikinis never fail to make you feel and look like a fifties starlet , concealing and revealing in all the right places. The appropriately named ‘Kate’ style is top of my wishlist – the sparkly gold is very Princess Leia, especially when teamed with a Melissa Odabash kaftan from Heidi Klein. This one-stop holiday shop’s style is more pared-down beach chic, but the experience is no less spoiling. As well as a magnificent selection of bikinis by the likes of Missoni, the in-house beauty salon will buff manicure and tan you so that you’re well and truly ready for the sun. If you can’t make it to Notting Hill my best advice is to shop online where websites like www.figleaves.com have an infinite selection and www.Cocobay.co.uk has a free returns policy and stocks hip Aussie brands Seafolly and Moontide. For those on the other side of the Atlantic, www.shopbop.com is the only way to go – snap up a hot pink Diane Von Furstenburg Beach or printed Marc Jacobs bikini whilst they’re […]
