I Love Orange!

From pale to neon as seen at Christopher Kane, orange is a perfect alternative to the preferred yellow. As trend reports go, this citrus shade has been the underdog, but in fact it’s just as daring, not as invasive and makes a strong statement. (Image: style.com, left – Jenni Kayne, right Danielle Stutt) And for those who like their clothes with a little sex appeal, check out Madison Marcus , discovered just today at stylescout , who have an ultra sexy airy orange dress, with a subtle cross over on the chest, lightly frilled sleeves and pleated lines closer to the hemline as part of their spring collection….

Platforms…an inspiration

Sometimes platforms aren’t always the best idea as shown in the video below…. But if like me you insist on adding height to your wardrobe, why not take inspiration from Dior. What a beautifully constructed platform shoe! The studs and heel separation are just genius. Is it just me, but upon first glance does the thought of robots enter your imagination? (Image: Vogue)

Zara’s winter selection

Hands down Zara gets my award for best coats on the high street. Breaking from tradition, this season I invested in just one coat, rather than splitting my cash and buying two. Best decision I made, and even wiser was my choice to head to Zara. Being on the tall side, for once I had zero problems with the length of the sleeves, rather I had more difficulty in choosing just one and opted for a black, military-style, ¾ length coat, rationalising that it would go with all outfit choices. It was affordable and I have no complaints at all about the quality. Being ready to indulge myself, and on the lookout for another coat with colour this time round, it still has to be Zara, especially after seeing the coat above. The colour satisfies my current obsession for red, the bold buttons add effective detail while keeping it simple and as spring approaches the structure and length are perfect for the transition in everyday wear to dresses. To think, despite all the hype I wasn’t the biggest fan of Zara prior to 2006, but credit where credits due, they have an excellent selection of coats for winter.

Time to take a break….

So there have been a few changes around My Fashion Life this year including a complete site re-design thanks to sycamore solutions and hopefully there will a lot more in 2007! I’ve often shied away from being personal in this blog, so this really is an overdue personal post. In my three soon to be four years of blogging I’d say this year has been the most demanding. Designer Profile: Rachel Roy

There are a crop of women such as Jasmine De Milo and Margherita Missoni to the Marchesa duo who are making a sophisticated mark in the fashion industry. Those mentioned have had their paths cushioned either by a rich daddy, a mogul boyfriend, or have been born into an existing fashion dynasty, however, in all three cases each lady has the talent to match. Another female whose name must be added to the list and whose story stands out from the rest is that of womenswear designer Rachel Roy. Often pictured – trying quite hard to give off the impression of perfect relationship status – with her beau hip-hop mogul Damon Dash – no one can argue that her rise to success hasn’t been fuelled by hard work and a whole lot of determination. Starting out her career in fashion as a t-shirt folder at a retail store, Roy took on an internship at Rocawear, progressing through the ranks, to Creative Director for their womenswear line. However partly due to the fact that her design approach clashed with the urban chic of Rocawear, Roy grabbed the bull by its stylish horns and developed her own line, making her debut this year at NY Fashion Week in September. Roy, who exudes grace and style, has even managed to get the blessings of fashions most powerful tag team, Anna Wintour and Andre Leon Talley. Her spring/summer 07 collection was hardly the work of a trendsetter, but more that of a communicator, and she spoke perfectly to both the working lady and the lady who lunches. Keeping it simple and working solely on shape and detail, Rachel Roy’s work is nothing short of class. With fashion week not too far away, it’ll be exciting to see what Roy has in store for the […]

Scarlett romances Vuitton

(Image:fashionologie) After seeing just a snippet of the Vuitton Spring campaign featuring Scarlett Johansson I’ve been searching high and low for more pictures all day. So as you can imagine, when I found these from fashionologie I was ecstatic, especially as the campaign does not disappoint at all! Katie Grand has translated the romantic theme from the catwalk show into the campaign flawlessly, blending in a Victorian element and using colours which contrast perfectly. The pictures, which totally scream spring, are enough to make you feel warm all over, during this madly cold winter! Looking almost doll like, infact looking like a Victorian doll, Scarlett Johansson has not failed Marc Jacobs and just from the bag above it’s safe to say Marc Jacobs has not failed Louis Vuitton. Gladiator-chic

What stood out on the runway of Chanel’s cruise 2007 collection? The chic knee high Gladiator sandals, which easily took the spotlight away from the rest of the line. In beige, metallic and black, Lagerfeld presented an incredibly sexy sandal which will no doubt spark a trend for Spring/Summer 07. (image: Style.com) Let’s face it, like skinny jeans its unlikely the knee highs will suit all, and Sergio Rossi’s lower length (pictured below) is perfect for those looking for an alternative. The sandal isn’t up on his website yet, but in its place is a higher heeled, mid calf, metallic interpretation, although not as sophisticated. Strutt Couture also on point has a glam but casual gold chained sandal within its wares for spring/summer 07, with my name all over it!

While its quite baffling, there is actually a debate going on as to whether the Chambre Syndicale made the right decision in encouraging fresh new ideas by inviting Boudicca, Lefranc Ferrant, Nicolas Le Cauchois, Cathy Pill, Gerald Watelet and Gustavo Lins to show at Paris Couture week in January 2007. It would be even more refreshing if a designer from a not publicised enough, fashion week was extended an invitation. {images: Reuters}

Giles Deacon’s new look

Fresh with being honoured designer of the year, Giles Deacon has confirmed his next career move will be to the high street. Teaming up with retailer New Look in a relationship that could well be for the long term, Deacon will begin with designing a capsule collection of 35 pieces for Spring 07, an accessories line is also in the works and actress Drew Barrymore looks set to be the face of the campaign… While the concept of designers teaming up with high street retailers used to be quite exciting, take Luella and Target and Stella McCartney and H&M for example, it was quite dissapointing to read this morning that Giles Deacon would be partnering up with New Look, there is a residing feeling of yet another designer selling out to the allure of the high street and the commercial success it could possibly bring. Before it “appeared” that the collaborations were in the interest of the people who wanted great designs at affordable prices however now the partnerships between designers and retailers are leaving quite a bad taste in the mouth of the fashion industry mainly because rather than bringing anything new to the table, designers are now more focused on appealing to the masses, which could end up being quite damaging not only to the industry but for the designer themselves. {image: from a selection of Christmas looks at New Look} [WWD]

Pete Doherty designs for Gio-Goi

It’s true, Pete Doherty has sold his soul to fashion. Announced just yesterday, Gio-Goi, the label known for dressing many in the music industry confirmed Doherty will be involved in the design process for the Spring/Summer ’07 range. Calling the recovering drug addict the inspiration behind the line, co-founder Anthony Donnelly sang his praises for Doherty claiming that, “Peter looks fantastic as a model. We are very excited. We look forward to having Pete’s influence as a rock icon in the design process.” With Kate dabbling in music and frequenting the stage with the Babyshambles, it was inevitable Doherty would try his hand at fashion. Fans won’t have long to wait as the line is launching next month and will be sold in Selfridges. This is an extremely overdue post considering I came upon Kaviar Gauche back in September during on|off, but I had to publish it nonetheless as it was such a treasured find. Made up of design duo Alexandra Fischer-Roehler and Johanna Kühl, the pair created the label in 2003. Their spring/summer’07 presentation, although dominated by white was far from bland. Creative detailing was the main focus which pulled the collection, from the accessories to the clothing together.

Technology…fashions future.

Everyone at the moment seems to be speculating about fashion’s future with Time magazine suggesting the industry is in a “state of medical emergency” and rightly so. Fashion is undoubtly stagnant and stale and with the number of celebrity labels which have infiltrated the market it is no wonder that it has become solely about marketing, i.e Topshop and Kate Moss. Watching footage of Hussein Chalayan’s show at Paris fashion week Spring/Summer 07 showed and gave hope to all that there is a future and an interesting one at that. Not the first designer to mix technology into fashion, (there are others before such as Alexandra Fede.) However Chalayan communicated the idea that technology could play an important role effectively and successfully. Using technology to create movement with zippers, hemlines and sleeves and to transform structure. He’s connected the two industries at a time when we are all in desperate need of refreshing and new ideas. The relationship between fashion and technology got off to a slow start and I must say I doubted if it would work and whether consumers would be accepting of it. But I’m absolutely certain now that technology is fashion’s future. It’ll be exciting to see the different ways designers will incorporate technology into fashion to create style in their collections.

Angeline Tournier

“I want to make shoes that are beautifully designed and finely made, but without an over the top price tag” If your feet are on the larger side, then you’ll know a thing or two about the difficulty in not only finding your shoe size (especially in the sales) let alone actually finding cute shoes which don’t look gigantic. Well lawyer turned footwear designer Angeline Tournier can relate and as a result of her frustrations set up Angeline Tournier London, specialising in designing and manufacturing footwear ranging from sizes EU36 right up to EU44 and which look great on big feet as well as small. Paris department store, Le Bon Marche exclusively bought Angeline’s debut collection and she’s just recently released her spring/summer 2006 collection…. What do you enjoy the most about your job? Four things 1) Working for myself, 2) fulfilling a lifelong dream to create shoes available in larger sizes, 3) being creative, 4) no longer being stuck in an over-air-conditioned office, wearing “formal” clothes and spending my time analysing and sorting out other people’s legal problems, and doing a job with little creative outlet. And like the least? Working for myself means I never get “time off”, I tend to work longer hours than before and I can not “get away” from work, even on week-ends and holidays. Can you tell us a bit about the design process involved in shoe design? The design process takes place over a number of months. I kind of visualise shoes or boots I’d like to wear myself, I sketch my initial ideas, sometimes I get inspiration from a trim off an item of clothing, a type of leather I see at a leather trade show or other totally unrelated topic. A few weeks before I need to submit my drawings […]

Five Minutes With Fashion Designer Ashish Gupta

Ambitious, hard working and already credited at London Fashion Week as one to watch, Ashish Gupta is set to take on the fashion world by storm. Graduating from Middlesex with a BA in fashion design, Ashish moved on to Central Saint Martins to pursue an MA. A chance encounter with Browns Focus saw him supply the boutique with his first order in 2001 and the label is now internationally known in Tokyo, New York and Hong Kong. How did you get started in the fashion industry? Luck! – my friend Nadine was wearing one of my jumpers one day, and got noticed by the buyer for Browns Focus. That was my first account. Whom would you credit as being an inspiration? So many people are inspiring! My mum, my friend Nadine, people you see on the street and because I’m a cinema addict, there’s that whole world of characters as well! In your opinion which Indian celebrity has an outstanding sense of style? Shobha De is fabulous! What can we expect from you for Spring/Summer 2005? African-inspired prints, lots of color and sequins, bold graphics. What one thing would you change about the world of fashion? I would change the fashion system of ‘seasons’. It would be nice to show collections when you wanted to, rather than having to show one in Feb and one in September. For more information visit www.ashish.co.uk

Gavin Pierre Medford

A 2002 graduate of London College of Fashion, Gavin Pierre Medford in his own words “designs for both masculine or feminine women and straight laced or eccentric men”. His collections are beautiful and draw upon his obsession with surface design, attention to detail and inspiration from the past/movies. Ask Gavin about his Spring/Summer 2006 collection and his eyes beam with excitement and passion, without a doubt Gavin Medford is one to watch! Describe the type of person you design for? My aim as a designer is to see a broad range of ages, backgrounds, lifestyles etc wearing my clothes so I find it a (welcome) challenge to try and incorporate as many styles as possible into my collections. I want to see teenagers to older business people finding something in my collections that they can easily incorporate into their everyday wardrobe. What one thing would you change about the fashion industry? I would like the fashion industry to use a wider range of ages, ‘looks’ and body shapes to exhibit and promote their clothes. I have no problem at all with current agency models but I do think showing a broad range of people would give teenagers a greater choice of role models so they don’t feel the need to conform to a stereotype they see in magazines and on TV. What do you have in store for us for Spring/Summer 2006? I won’t give too much away but this will be the most advanced, technical, challenging and creative show to date. I’m also using some new cutting techniques and lets just say it will be a fashion ‘show’. What changes do you think need to be made in order to help fashion designers establish themselves? I think there should be some sort of sponsorship each season that helps fund […]
