One of the most prestigious film – and fashion – events of the year has begun. Yes, after kicking off on Wednesday, the exclusive Cannes Film Festival is well under way, and so is the red carpet action that always incurs at the lavish two-week ceremony.

Our favourite occasion in the calendar – the dresses are more daring, the glamour’s knocked up a notch and the risque rises with the utmost chic – the A list have been presenting the very best of red carpet couture in their masses.

And with two days of serious sartorial success under its belt already, our selection for the first part of our best dressed list has been particularly hard, but not for lack of gorgeousness.

From Rachel McAdams’ many hits to Uma Thurman in Versace, see below for our favourite picks from Cannes so far…

Rachel McAdams

Rachel McAdams hit the red carpet with her man Michael Sheen to promote their new film Midnight in Paris looking every inch the Hollywood star.  The Mean Girls actress wore a breathtakingly beautiful sheer gown with embroidered red lace by Marchesa. Together with her gold Casadei courts and voluminus curly hair she looked the epitome of old school Hollywood glamour.

Uma Thurman

Attending the Midnight in Paris premiere Uma Thurman pulled out all the stops. Looking stunning in an an angelic custom-made white Versace gown, complete with a feathered train, Uma totally show the show on the red carpet. Even the actress herself knew how great she looked – when photographers complimented her dress, she said, “It’s sexy isn’t it?”

Angelina Jolie

Angelina is a rare sighting on the red carpet these days but her appearance at Cannes yesterday to promote her new film Kung Fu Panda 2 showed she hasn’t lost he touch when it comes to ultra elegant dressing. The queen of simplicity, she looked understated but classy in a nude a Salvatore Ferragamo dress and matching courts.

Vanessa Hudgens

Fast becoming a ‘Best Dressed’ regular, actress Vanessa Hudgens was spotted in Cannes heading to the Calvin Klein party looking stunning as usual. The yellow asymmetric hem dress looked gorgeous against her olive skin and tousled black hair.

Diane Kruger

Seriously, does this women ever get it wrong? The stunning Diane Kruger attended the premiere of Sleeping Beauty wearing a full-length gold Calvin Klein gown and as usual, her hair and make-up was spot on too.

Jane Fonda

It is very hard to believe that Jane Fonda is 73 years old. Proving that your style needn’t suffer past a certain age, she showed off her incredible figure in a fitteed long-sleeved white gown by Emilio Pucci. The diamante cut-outs add an element of fun to the elegant dress. Love it.

Salma Hayek

Salma Hayek graced the red carpet for the Puss in Boots premiere in this strapless Gucci gown. Nude embellished gowns have been spotted on the red carpet time and time again but the flashbulbs never tire of them. The Spanish actress looked stunning with her side swept curls and deep red lipstick.

Alexa Chung

Never one to blend into the background, Alexa stood out in a short Balenciaga dress amongst the all the floor-length gowns. Simple and sophisticated, Alexa paired it with classic black pumps and her trademark tousled bob.

Rachel McAdams

The actress must have taken a lot of time packing for Cannes – every outfit she’s worn so far has been stunning. Moving in a different direction from her Marchesa gown, for the Sleeping Beauty premiere she wore beige and gold trouser suit. Sophisticated and sexy, another home run for Rachel.

Emily Browning

At the Sleeping Beauty premiere Austrailian actress Emily Browning chose Valentino for her red carpet appearance. We love the vintage-inspired beige lace and her smokey eyed make-up makes for a very sexy look.
