The Evolution Of Burberry

Like many other iconic fashion houses Burberry Prorsum has its signatures pieces. For Louis Vuitton it’s the eloping “L” and “V” and for Chanel it’s the luxurious incorporation of tweed that has existed within the threadwork of the house since it was well established in the 1920s. Like many of the influential houses that are still in existence they’ve reinvented that once iconic symbol with ultra-modern relevance.

Runway: Dior Homme Spring 2009

If there’s one thing that cannot be denied of the Dior Homme spring 2009 collection, it is the effective use of popping colours. The electric blues, fuchsias and metallic gold blots were placed at the perfect time to nudge the observers when their eyes grew tired of scoping out the details on the boarder-line monotonous all-black looks.

Vintage Shopping With Fashion Critic Holly Brubach

Vintage shopping can be a pleasurable experience, especially when you stumble upon that special one of a kind piece. However, before spending your hard earned money on that all important investment its advisable to arm yourself with knowledge. For valuable advice, it doesn’t get better than vintage expert, and Creative Consultant for YOOX, Holly Brubach. Holly has served as Style Editor at The New York Times Magazine and The New Yorker and was also Director of the Prada Sport and Home. She is currently a contributing editor for Vanity Fair and acted as a curator to select each piece in the Yoox.com Dior Vintage Sale which goes live on June 4th. Here, Holly shares her tips on shopping for vintage… 1. When wearing vintage today, the first rule of thumb is: not head-to-toe.  It’s important to mix vintage with contemporary, to integrate the old with the new in a way that doesn’t call too much attention to the vintage item(s), just as an antique chair can become part of a modern room.  Concentrate on the whole effect and not on a single piece.  Many people treat vintage too formally, maybe because it’s “precious.”  But one great way to make it seem completely timely is to pair it with jeans.

London Fashion Week AW08: Ashley Isham

Presenting his AW08 collection at the Royal Opera House, Ashley Isham upped the glam factor and urged us ladies to channel our inner sex kitten next season. The collections palette ranged from cobalt blue, and bright orange to purple and caramel. Snakeskin waistcoats complimented long evening dresses with plunging necklines. Edgier looks came in the form of patent leather biker jackets paired with body con dresses. Jewel brooches embellished various pieces and added a lovely final touch to some of the fitted jackets.

London Fashion Week AW08: Ann-Sofie Back

Inspiration for Ann-Sofie Backs collection came from today’s self obsessed celebrities and their constant need to stay in the limelight, in particular all the knicker flashing that’s been inflicted on us. It was unarguably an interesting concept. With cartoon themes blaring through the speakers, models paraded down the catwalk in g-strings that were worn as garters. G-strings were also worked into silk lace dresses, jeans and tops. Prints were created from pixellated images of Britney Spear’s crotch and used on t-shirts, leggings, and dresses.

London Fashion Week AW08: Ben de Lisi

According to the press release at Ben de Lisi, the AW08 collection was for the “woman who embodies class with a hint of danger”…..and yes the collection was classy, chic and sophisticated, basically everything we’ve come to expect from De Lisi. As always his evening wear was incredible. Classic, silk jersey dresses were belted at the waist and black patent dresses were accessorised with large oversized bows (when is this trend going to end?).

NY Fashion Week AW08: Malan Breton

Before today’s show, I just remembered Malan Breton as the eccentric, Count Dracula resembling contestant on the last season of Project Runway. Even though he didn’t make it to Bryant Park via Heidi Klum and Tim Gunn, the fashion newbie generated enough buzz on his own and showcased his first collection in the Tents for Spring 07. Breton’s AW08 presentation today was quite impressive and gave off a “tres luxe et riche” feel. I say this in French, because there were definitely some strong French influences on the runway, starting from the swanky music, to the rouged lips and heavy eyeliner on the models, to the use of neutral blacks and off-white colors contrasted by bright reds.

Features: Gap’s new look

With fashion going mainstream over the past few years via stores like H&M and Target, it’s been tough for even an old favourite, like the Gap, to keep pace. Known mainly for being the go-to for American sportswear essentials, like basic jeans, t-shirts, sweaters and oxford button-downs, the Gap has not shifted from its clean cut, preppy aesthetic since I was a kid in Junior High.

NY Fashion Week AW08: Day One

Even though Mother Nature was not so kind yesterday, with icy cold rain pouring down the on the first day of Fashion Week, fashion lovers were not deterred and filed into the tents of Bryant Park dressed to impress. Most fashionistas were dressed smartly for the weather , in black frocks layered with stylish coats , and I was able to blend right into the crowd in my black pleated dress and platform boots. The girls of Lipstick Jungle – Brooke Shields, Kim Raver, and Lindsay Price, and writer/producer, Candace Bushnell started the week off in high style with the official ribbon cutting ceremony at 8 am; And the first show, Nautica, swiftly followed at 9 am in the tents.

Reviews: Wife Dressing, The Fine Art of Being a Well-Dressed Wife

Upon first glance of the title, “Wife Dressing: The Fine Art of Being a Well-Dressed Wife, which was first penned in 1959 by model and designer, Anne Fogarty, I instantly thought that this recently re-released “how-to book would be outdated or even degrading for on-the-go, modern day women like ourselves. I mean, we’ve come a long way from the days when career women were the new breed, and when wearing petticoats, pearls and white gloves at home on a Sunday afternoon were the standard.

Project Runway Season 4: Episode 9 Rundown

Ricky, aka Mr. Sensitive, is probably still crying over his first win this season. I couldn’t help but be happy that the underdog – who had seemed to perpetually grace the chopping block , finally stepped up to showcase his talent. The form-fitting dress he created was an edgy, yet refined, take on denim and looked as though it was painted on his model, hitting every right curve. Although Ricky was able to muster up some magic this week, his hit-or-miss track record makes it tough to have any confidence that he’ll make it much farther. As for the rest of the contestants, nearly all of them received warm responses from the judges (even garnering smiles from sometime ice queen, Nina Garcia!).

Baby it’s cold outside

Critics predict that the death of thick warm coats is nigh because of global warming and instead we should invest in chunky knit cardigans. We disagree and think there will be quite a few freezing cold days this winter that require a coat warm enough to ward off the cold. When hunting for a coat good enough to do the job ditch playing it safe with fitted black options and succumb to the temptation of voluminous shapes, like this stylish wool Kimono coat from Spijkers and Spijkers, £575, available from Nina and Lola.

AW07: Knitted

Knits are integral to this seasons dress and with them they bring a new approach to oversized and baggy. From sweater dresses to cardigan coats, designers like Stella McCartney and Giles Deacon are breaking down the barriers in terms of what actually passes as a ‘whole’ piece of clothing; wearing a cardigan is now no longer an extra layer as much as an outfit in itself. However you might want to take into consideration the fact that standard lightweight crochet knits may not cut it this autumn/winter. Invest in chunky knits – the chunkier the better. Rimmel Underground Light Beam

What is it about a lip-gloss with a flashlight that makes us ladies shriek with delight? God knows! But every time I proudly show off my new Light beam lip gloss from Rimmel Underground, the response always echoes my initial reaction of excitement. It’s pure genius! Just push a well-placed button on the cap and a light suitable for any encounter in the dark shines brightly. Realistically it’s highly unlikely that the light beam will ever be used unless you find yourself desperately trying to apply lip-gloss in the dark. But it’s a brilliant idea which I’m surprised hasn’t been imitated a while ago.

The Light Beam lip gloss is available in six shades. And although I’ve long been a devotee to Mac’s lip-glass, I’d convert to Rimmel just for the addictive sweet smell of its After Hours, Cherry Red version. . On the downside rather than my usual once over, I did have to apply a couple of coats to get a glistening finish but my lips stayed lusciously glossy for ages! Jens Laugesen:London Fashion Week

When it comes to colour, Danish designer Jens Laugesen is known for keeping his palette uncomplicated and simple, contrasting solely black with white and that’s exactly what he did last Friday. Taking inspiration from neo-classical Danish Painter Wilhelm Hammershoj, Laugesen presented a stark collection which in his own words was for the “intelligent consumer. An intellectual collection it was and with the aid of weather instrumentals Laugesen built a cold and surreal atmosphere in which the models slowly stormed down the catwalk amidst heckling and catcalling from the photographers…(I dont know how they managed to stay professional!)

Pure London: 10 Years On And Still Going Strong….

I’ve been attending Pure London – now in its 10th year – twice a year for the past couple of years now and each time the exhibition which is popular amongst both local and international buyers improves significantly. Taking place from Feb 11- 13, with over 800 brands exhibiting and making better use of space, last weeks exhibition was a success. My aim was to find as many top quality brands ranging from clothing to accessories to feature on the site, as well as get inspiration from the catwalk and hear what Drapers had to say in their trend report. As always Pure was packed, from visitors who attend the exhibition purely to satisfy their insatiable hunger for fashion -believe me it really is retail heaven! , to buyers such as Harvey Nichols, Selfridges and House of Fraser in search of new brands as well maintaining their relationships with existing ones. A fashion meat market, it most definitely is! Some exhibitors are inundated with visitors while others sit there eager for someone to visit, and all are instinctively trained to scan each visitor for importance within the first three seconds. Their eyes immediately dart to your badge to see how much effort is needed. Time is precious I guess! With little time to spare, (as I had to run to Ben De Lisi afterwards) I managed to cover both floors in the space of four hours as well as attend the daily catwalk show and sit in on the Drapers fashion forecast which was the most disappointing aspect of the exhibition. I had high hopes for the forecast which was presented by Drapers fashion editor Khabi Mirza and promised exclusive trend and industry information; however for me it lacked substance and stated the obvious. Although I agreed with certain observations […]

SteveJ & YoniP: London Fashion Week

This emerging brand has real personality as their catwalk show on Thursday demonstrated. With a dominant Tibetan influence it didn’t take long for evidence of this talented pair’s skill in tailoring to become apparent as fresh-faced models styled with long plaits, furry asymmetrical hats and medallion-decorated belts set the scene for a collection of elegant jackets and coats to steal the show. Blazers that were traditional in cut came in soft red, as if faded by the sun, and a loose-fitted cornflower blue jacket had sharp pleating on a skirt-like back. Contrasts between coarse and delicate fabrics added life to the dominant palette of red and brown – layers of pale ruffled chiffon were glimpsed under heavy leather and patterned fabric coats. Further textural interest came from thick-knitted scarves and a silky printed fabric that appeared in shirts, dresses and even cropped men’s trousers. As the designs became more monochrome for eveningwear the delicate red white and brown print played a larger visual role. The fusion of cultures really worked, and the reason is because SteveJ & YoniP have not made too much of a caricature of their influences. The show was refreshingly different – whether setting trends or following their own path I think we’ll all be snapping up pieces from this collection come September. Photography by Charmaine Mok

A Shift in Season

As hemlines continue to rise, the shift dress is finding it’s home as a wardrobe staple, replacing skinny jeans as our favourite garment. First revisited on the runway six months ago the sixties trend looks set to run and run, especially with the impending release of Factory Girl, the film about Edie Sedgewick that’s set to make Sienna Miller an even bigger star than she already is. Burberry’s sexy Spring/Summer 07 campaign by Mario Testino took inspiration from the 1960’s photography of Cecil Beaton, and saw Kate Moss leading the troupe of beautiful people dressed in cream and silver trapeze-shaped coats with oversize buttons.

Zara’s winter selection

Hands down Zara gets my award for best coats on the high street. Breaking from tradition, this season I invested in just one coat, rather than splitting my cash and buying two. Best decision I made, and even wiser was my choice to head to Zara. Being on the tall side, for once I had zero problems with the length of the sleeves, rather I had more difficulty in choosing just one and opted for a black, military-style, ¾ length coat, rationalising that it would go with all outfit choices. It was affordable and I have no complaints at all about the quality. Being ready to indulge myself, and on the lookout for another coat with colour this time round, it still has to be Zara, especially after seeing the coat above. The colour satisfies my current obsession for red, the bold buttons add effective detail while keeping it simple and as spring approaches the structure and length are perfect for the transition in everyday wear to dresses. To think, despite all the hype I wasn’t the biggest fan of Zara prior to 2006, but credit where credits due, they have an excellent selection of coats for winter.

A creative and unique label by the name of I.am clothing. Founded with the motivation of creating one off pieces rather than mass produced garments, I am clothing is haute couture for the street and consists of waistcoats, skirts, blazers, trousers and scarves. An advocator of individualism Lor-e talks to us about what makes I.am different from the rest. Your bio states that I.am clothing was created to awaken the world to your view of fashion, what is your view of fashion? We believe that everyone should just be themselves, whatever that is…not following trends and be true to yourself when it comes to fashion. Wear what you like and want to, not what society dictates to you… How would you describe your style? Individualistic… You produce 12 pieces of each of your designs and each piece of clothing is personally signed and numbered by Will.i.am. This is a great unique selling point…what made you decide to do this and once I.am clothing gets bigger and you produce more of each item, will it be something you can continue in the future? We decided to originally to stand against mass production. no one wants to wear something that everyone else already has…this fall/winter collection 2005 has gone up to 500 pieces being produced, they are all still signed and numbered individually by will.i.am… Whom would you class as a fashion icon? Anyone who wears what they want, […]

J-lo down

I’ve always sat on the fence re the fur debate, I’ve seen both sides of the argument and haven’t really felt passionately about it enough to completely agree that fur should be banned. To be honest I think fur coats are beautiful, I’ve never worn one and probably wouldnt just because it’s not my style but I’ve admired it on others. That was till this morning, when upon checking the sites email I came across a comment from Daniel Miranda from Portugal re this post. She posted a video link regarding the whole J-Lo vs Peta issue thats been in the fashion news for the past couple of weeks. As curious as I am I entered the details into my address bar looking forward to the video and what I saw was so horrific and foul that I couldnt believe that for so long I’ve been ignorant about exactly how animals are killed in order to make these coats. The video really isnt for the faint hearted, it is unbelieveable and it has affected my opinion. I do believe J-Lo has had a hard time by peta recently and she has been singled out and made an example of by the organisation. She is not the only celeb who wears fur….she wont be the last…but she really should take a look at this footage. Watch the video Text: Michele Obi
