We caught up with Catherine to do what we do best…talk fashion!

Return of the Mac!

Until recently, I’d always associated mac’s with flashers and grannies.  Why? I’m not entirely sure.  Stereotypes aside, I’ve never actually been flashed, and my grandmother is unusually stylish for her age. My preconceived mac-shaped notions were finally quashed on a trip last week to a local charity shop, where I found and fell in love with my very own mac.

Winter Style: Shiny Nylon Jacket By Moncler

The nights are drawing in and the days are getting colder, yes ladies it’s time to start pulling your winter wardrobe forward from the recesses of the cupboard. Personally I’ve always been a winter person, and my wardrobe certainly reflects this, in fact I often find myself counting down the weeks until I can pull out my Dior duffle coat, Burberry earmuffs and Louboutin knee high-boots again (it’s not long now – hooray!).

Skinny Jeans Get a Makeover

It is with much regret that I feel I should be waving goodbye to the skinny jean this autumn. Admittedly, I could not wait to purchase my dark-wash kick-flares this week and revel in the 70s heritage look that saturated the A/W o8 catwalks, but there is something inside me hankering after some tight-fitting, pipe-legged denim. However I needn’t worry, because the ever reliable favourite appears to have just had a makeover.

Shop Nasty Gal Vintage

Nasty Gal Vintage was always my vintage go-to on eBay when I wanted something original, on-trend, and in great condition. Selling only the very best vintage wares, they got it right every time. Yes, fear not my friends, NGV have simply relocated to a bigger, better platform with their new online store

Beauty: Nail-Back Painting

As every woman knows, an outfit can be made or indeed broken by the tiniest detail, and a sure-fire way to ruin even the most jaw-droppingly gorgeous of ensembles is a shoddy manicure. A true fashionista would never be seen proudly parading her new Alexander McQueen Novak with uneven, unkempt and grubby nails – *shudder*. My manicurist LuLu must cringe when I book my weekly appointment with her (although she’s far too polite to admit it) as I’m always creating beautiful yet time-consuming designs to match my outfits. A bit much? Maybe, but teaming a sky-high pair of Louboutin’s with co-ordinating nails – usually black on the front, red on the back – how unashamedly and uber glamorous.

Mischa Barton’s Bags: Don’t Waste Your Money

I’m not a huge fan of celebrity labels. That’s no secret and you can read my rant on the subject here but I promise I’m not being biased as I write my thoughts on Mischa Barton’s new line of handbags. Last week while window shopping I spotted the collection and was about to walk straight past when I figured why not give it a chance. I wish I could say I was pleasantly suprised but I wasn’t.

Top 20 Supermodels: Niki Taylor

Back in 2003, when My Fashion Life was just 4 months old we posted a quote by Director of Click models, Harold Mindel, that went something like this, “The supermodel is over. It’s celebrities this year, and when fashion returns, it will be back to the models. How right was he? Fashion has returned and so has the supermodel. And we intend to celebrate their comeback by featuring our favourite “Top 20 Supermodels” over the coming weeks. First up is Niki Taylor. Starting out at 14, Niki appeared on the cover of Vogue at 17 and by 21 made the covers of six major magazines all in one month. Like Cindy, she made the mole a must have and had girls all over pencilling moles just above their top lip! As promised here is the first blast from the past video which features a 17yr old Niki on the House of Style.

The Sweet Smell of Summer: Burberry

The olfactory overload when entering a perfume store could send a consumer out the door screaming, well this consumer at least. Last week I decided to take the plunge and spend some time picking out a new scent for the season. The sun was shining, the flowers were bright and vibrant but everywhere I turned, one perfume after another, was the stench of the notorious grandma smell.

Peach vs Coral. You Decide?

Many admiring words have been spoken, of late, of the countless joys that coral can cast over one’s life. Words that I entirely agree with (perhaps I wrote them?) and, yes, I am in the midst of a passionate love affair with my new coral lipstick but if we are going to be fussy (let’s), I must admit I prefer peach. It’s like coral’s bookish cousin, with a gentle aura of antiquity as opposed to visions of club Tropicana and leathery skin. There is something about coral that will always recall to me visions of 80s fashion shoots in Miami. Which really isn’t me at all. Far better to be draped in a world of antique beaded lamps, silk slips from China, and dimly lit dancing. This is the colour of drinking bitter coffee on a blustery afternoon, a cameo brooch, tarnished and secret in a dusty old chest. In fabrics of velvet, silk, and lace, especially, there is something seductively historical and romantic about the colour. And whilst peach seems to whisper autumn to me, these silk dresses from Topshop are the perfect way to float through summer, light as air, leaving the scent of rose water, old books, and coffee in your wake……

What’s a Designer Bag If The Owner Doesn’t Know Its Value?

For the past 5 months my Aunt has been carrying a Luella bag around. It was a gift from a friend and till now she’s had no clue as to the value or even the designer of the bag, however since the day she put the bag on her shoulder she’s received a sack load of compliments. Last week I went to visit my Aunt and being that I’m a fashion junkie my eyes immediately darted to the beauty of a bag that she was carrying. I oohhhed and aahhed and marvelled at how gorgeous it was. Being that my Aunt isn’t a designer freak I initially presumed that it was a bargain from the high street, but after feeling the quality I couldn’t believe it was possible. After taking a quick look at the label and after two seconds of registering exactly whom the designer was I looked at her in disbelief…”This is a Luella bag”, I squealed.

Colleen Mcloughlin: The Dress and the Glamour

The celebrity wedding of the year is over, and the photos are out for all us common folk to scrutinise. The dress, the flowers and the ring all go under the magnifying glass. So, what was Colleen’s dress really like and was it all that it was made out to be? I purchased the new OK! magazine this week to find out for myself. Now, it’s a bit difficult to express my opinion on her dress as Colleen actually wore two different wedding dresses on the day, but I’ll do my best…

Reader Q&A: What is going to be the trend for sunglasses this season?

I have a question. What is going to be the trend for sunglasses this summer and early Fall? – Michael (June 2nd, 2008) Sunglasses are a funny thing in terms of trends because there are only so many ways to remodel a pair of spectacles. But, somehow, there is always some new utterly covetable style. The most obvious trend of the moment, for boys and girls, are the classic Ray-Ban Wayfarer sunglasses. Not exactly new, they have been hanging around on countless celebrities long enough to be completely ubiquitous but somehow still desirable. Fairly universally flattering and understated (so long as you steer clear of the nu-rave coloured variety) you can pick up a pair to match any price range from ASOS right through to the original brand. One sunglasses trend that I know I will be embracing in some shape or form is tortoiseshell frames. Seen in every style from wayfarers to oversized, they remind me of dusty bookshelves, 60s film stars, hippies in Morocco and gin and tonics in the garden all at the same time. Karen Walker has some great chunky ones that look pretty good on boys and girls, while Topshop have countless tortoiseshell frames in more subtle styles. Head there, also, for some pretty great Hockney-esque round frames (different versions for different sexes) to wear with summer’s florals, to channel Paul Smith’s Hockney-meets-Bloomsbury group aesthetic. For more outlandish styles, round frames in general seem to be having a bit of a moment. Go for Dries van Noten-esque combination frames for an intellectual look that is far less faddy but still bang on trend (check ASOS for boys and girls). As a lifetime lover of all things Lolita, I must admit I am drawn to Topshop’s heart-shaped frames like a moth to an ill-advised flame although […]

Colleen Mcloughlin’s Wedding: The Dress of the Year?

I love a good celebrity wedding. Meringue-style dress, glittering tiaras and sparkling jewellery all create the perfect illusion of a fairytale come true. When I got married last year I aimed for such greatness, but because my wealth does not equal that of a footballers wife, I had to settle for something not quite on par with a five million pound wedding. Yes, the next lavish celeb wedding is due to grace the covers of Hello and OK next weekend when British celeb, Colleen McLoughlin (famous for not so much), weds her football player husband in Italy. Never mind the fact that Westlife will be playing, or the dozens of butterflies each guest will release at the mention of ‘I Do’, – I am more interested in her wedding dress!

Arm Candy: Vintage Rhinestone Bracelet

Fed up with big bold cocktail rings, I’ve recently developed an obsession with big bold bracelets. Last week, while sifting through the numerous press releases in my inbox I came across an email about Carole Tanenbaum and her gorgeous collection of vintage jewels. During her 25 years of buying one of a kind pieces, Tanenbaum has amassed a collection of over 15,000 limited edition jewels that date back to the Victorian period right through to the 1980’s. And that is how I came across this beauty – a romantic silver bow bracelet embellished with blue rhinestones. Beautiful isn’t it? $400 available at

Jeweler Extraordinaire: Helen Ficalora

I often find myself overlooking jewelry as a shopping choice. I look at it, quite a bit, but when it comes to actually purchasing something, the instances are few and far between. Most of the jewelry I own I have received as a gift (although there are a few exceptions where I have treated myself!). I think that this may change since I discovered Helen Ficalora.

Seasonal Schizophrenia: Sandals or Sweaters?

I’m confused. This past week in NYC was unseasonably balmy (75 degrees Fahrenheit in mid-April) and I found myself relegating my black tights to the back corner of my closet and going bare-legged with my skirts and dresses. Then today rolled around, and although it wasn’t exactly January again the cold and damp made me long for a thick sweater. So—on to the confusion. I’m browsing around online as I am wont to do, and I’m thinking of gaps in my wardrobe. I need a slightly oversized cashmere cardigan, preferably black, that I can snuggle into when it’s chilly outside, like this one from

T-Shirt Recycling: Loomstate for Barney’s

Okay so I admit that I have been on something of a bender lately, but I rarely have time to go into the big department stores in Manhattan and do most of my shopping at boutiques closer to my apartment in the East Village. While shopping in Barney’s last week I saw a poster for their latest fashion project from
