Our guide to shopping the Christmas sales

Some of you will be so wrapped up in Christmas presents this morning you’ll have barely remembered the Boxing day sales have started… who are we kidding? Any seasoned shopper worth her wardrobe will have set her alarm especially early this morning to sift out the savviest steals the stores have got to offer! But a sale should never be approached without a thorough plan of what’s worth stashing up on and what’s not worth the 15-people queue, and since you’ve been so busy buying presents and preparing the turkey, we’ve made one for you. With tips on what’s worth its weight in gold and what to avoid at all costs, follow our steps below to the do’s and don’t’s of Christmas sale shopping… DO buy anything floral. It’s a perennial favourite that’ll prove super versatile come spring. DON’T buy rich, boozy colours. We may have gulped them up this winter, but come next season we’ll be looking for a brighter beverage. DO buy into neon. A hot pink tee here, a fluro-striped skirt there – it’s spring’s favourite fad, and since you won’t be wearing them forever, it makes sense to snap them up cheap. DON’T buy jewel tones. Autumn loves a deep, punchy palette, but next season’s all about the softer shades. On that note, DO buy pastels for reasons above. DON’T buy heritage tweeds. Tailoring comes much softer next spring, and unless you’re a country bumpkin, it’s time to pack away the posh past. DO buy pleated skirts. We saw them everywhere from Celine to Burberry, making them spring’s key skirt shape. DON’t buy Dalmatian print. Autumn might have loved this trend, but next season there’s not a dog’s dot in sight. DO buy anything striped, especially bottoms. Pyjama pants are spring’s soft alternative to tailored trousers. […]

A day in the life of our editor

Two weeks ago, when we attended Diesel and Grazia’s reader event to celebrate the brand’s official relaunch for pre-SS12, we hand-picked (from a hat, natch) a name. That name would get to accompany our editor, Emily, for a day to get a glimpse into the sometimes-glamorous but often-frantic life of a fashion editor. That name was Omena Ukeleghe. She was our winner. And here’s her story… The day started with a press lunch at the Bicester Village’s VIP suite, where Emily and I met the PR and marketing team from Bicester Village. They had laid on a truly scrumptious lunch, and as part of a VIP press pack, we were given a generous £50 card and 10% discount. After lunch, we went to burn some cash at the numerous high street and designer label outlet stores at the Village where, thanks to the additional £50 gift card and discount, I bought myself a gorgeous pair of emerald green heels (I’m a sucker for a lovely pair of heels). I also bought a jumper – a practical purchase, I know, but ’tis season to wrap up warm. A hop and a skip on the train back to London and we were whizzed away in a car to my first pampering session in preparation for the evening’s event. First port of call was Tommy Guns for my hair and then onto the Powder Puff girls to get my make up and nails done. They did a fantastic job! The final port of call before our big event was the Diesel store on Carnaby Street to pick out my outfit for the night ahead. With £250 to spend at the store (thanks Diesel!), I went for a pair of Jegonfire super slim denim leggings that made my legs look so hot they would […]

Lunchtime buy: Tabitha Simmons Ester suede and leather ankle boots

After winning the Emerging Talent Accessories Award at the British Fashion Awards last week, there couldn’t be a better time to invest in some footwear by Tabitha Simmons. The model-turned-footwear-designer trained in London and has since been crafting her shoe designs for two years. Now based in New York, Simmons is really making a name for herself. It seems that years in the fashion industry have trained her eye to deliver exactly the kind of footwear that we want – sleek, quirky and stylish, yet classic and comfortable, too. This pair of boots have ‘investment piece’ written all over them: distinctly cut in sumptuous black suede with a black leather fold cuff, they’re a classic in the making, whilst the gold hardware detail on the toecap and zip make these totally modern and lust-worthy. We’ll wear these with black skinny trousers or with a cocktail dress and bare legs (indoors, obvs) to let them shine in all their beautiful-booted glory! Tabitha Simmons Ester suede and leather ankle boots, £805, available at mytheresa.

mai marimoto lungta de fancy

Five minutes with Lady Gaga’s fave shoe designer, Lungta de Fancy

Despite Lungta De Fancy designer Mai Marimoto being on her way to celebrating the 10th anniversary of the brand, penning a book and branching out into lingerie in the next coming months, the Central Saint Martins graduate remains a humble and fuss-free designer with a true passion and talent for her work – and a desire to please every one of her shoppers. And, since we mention it, those shoppers happen to include some of fashion’s most famous faces from Lady Gaga to Victoria Beckham and Rihanna (and even a royal, too). The appeal, it seems, is her ability to meet every girl’s needs. You can find Lungta De Fancy in London’s New Bond Street, Knightsbridge and St Christopher’s Place, which is where we caught up with the designer last week as part of the fabulous Thank You Thursdays shopping event. Find out what Mai Marimoto told us about her inspirations, her plans for the label, and those Lady Gaga shoes…   How do you manage to balance getting the maximum out of your creativity and keeping the prices down to (relatively) affordable prices? I understand that every customer is special so I wouldn’t mind if someone came up to me and said ‘I love this’, but it needs to be a bit different here so each item can be individual if that’s how a lady wants it. Every lady is something special and everyone has different figures. For three of our stores we do free alterations so we like to make sure it fits the client perfectly before their special event. Like this client that’s come in today – she thinks the dress is a little too long so we are fixing it to how she likes for no extra cost. London isn’t the only place you have a […]

Apprentice winner Michelle Dewberry wears £50 version of Kate Winslet’s Stella McCartney dress!

Our mouths literally dropped to the floor when Kate Winslet stepped out in Paris for the Carnage premiere in the figure-hugging, waist-cinching red and black Octavia dress from Stella McCartney’s Autumn/Winter 2011 collection.Kate knew she was onto a winner as she wore the monochrome version of the dress in Venice for the Mildred Pierce premiere a few months ago, and received endless compliments about how stunning her curves looked in it.

Mou: the stylish alternative to Uggs?

Today’s conundrum is, in fact, the same debate we’ve been facing for years. Uggs: do or die? According to your reactions of today’s love or hate, you’re all in the latter camp. So what would you say if we told you there was an alternative to Uggs that offer all the warmth and comfort you crave, and actually look kinda cool too? Meet Mou, fashion’s best-kept secret. All the editors wear them, the most prestigious stores stock them and the stars are flocking for them – they just don’t want you to cotton on the cosiest things your feet will ever wear. We must point out that Mou isn’t a new label – in fact, it started life in 2002 on a stall at London’s Portabello market and quickly became the boot of choice for celebs (Gwyneth Paltrow and Cameron Diaz, to name a few) – but it is a relatively recent addition to our radar. And that’s because last week we met Mou’s founder and, for the first time, fondled the boots up close and personal while wondering why the hell we’d be missing out on these for so many years. Born out of a dream to create original, luxurious footwear to counteract the pressures of modern city-living, Shelley Tichborne’s cult boots may look similar to Uggs, but there’s one resounding difference – they have a distinctly luxe feel thanks to their sumptuous fabrics (try treated leather, calfskin or gorgeously soft goatskin) that means you don’t actually mind being spotted in them. And for the new season, Mou’s signature soft-snug styles have taken on some seriously stylish details – chunky leather buckles that create a cosy alternative to Westwood’s pirate boots, eskimo styles with metallic finishes and contrast stitching that look like luxe versions of a traditional snow boot, […]

Miranda Kerr looks futuristic in Peter Pilotto

It was the glitzy event everyone wanted to be on the guest list for last week. The Museum of Modern Art’s 4th Annual Film Benefit honoring acclaimed Spanish filmmaker Pedro Almodovar in New York was awash with celebrities including Anna Wintor, Karen Elson, Sarah Jessica Parker, Blake Lively and Drew Barrymore. However, in the fashion stakes, there was one who stood out from all the rest – Orlando Bloom’s other half and supermodel Miranda Kerr. She’s been making some brave fashion choices lately and this futuristic Peter Pilotto dress from the designers’ spring/summer 2012 collection is one of the best. The zip and peplum detailing give it an edgy twist and the gorgeous blue and white print is, frankly, mesmerising. The 28-year-old chose to team the dress with an intricate pair of Nicholas Kirkwood lace-up mesh heels and a metallic Calvin Klein clutch bag. Swept back hair and a rosy pout was enough to complete the look. If we dress like this in the future, we might just invent a time machine… [poll id=”239″]

Just a few weeks ago, Sir Paul McCartney and his blushing bride Nancy Shevell tied the knot in front of just 30 people during an intimate ceremony in London. Get the look: Rihanna’s chic transitional triumph

Thanks to Rihanna’s tour, we’ve had the company of the 20-year-old Barbadian for the past month or so now in Britain, and you know, we’re starting to get used to it. Ri-Ri was spotted on another night out in London looking suitably stunning (as per) last week. Taking a trip to Stringfellows, she chose to wear a chocolate brown biker jacket paired with one of the must-have accessories of the season: a sumptuous fur stole. Her dark blue skin-tight jeans and black leather ankle boots finished off the look with aplomb. We love Rihanna’s laid-back take on luxe, and it’s seriously inspiring us for the current windy weather. Here’s how you can recreate her look with a few simple pieces… This beautiful brown biker jacket from 3.1 Phillip Lim might be pricey, but it’s a fantastic investment. With it’s achingly cool zips and buckles, we guarantee you’ll never look at another leather again. 3.1 Philip Lim Cognac Motorcycle Leather Jacket, £920, available at my-wardrobe. Tippets, stoles, call them what you will – a fur collar will see you through winter when worn with jackets, coats and jumpers. We love this purse-friendly option from Oasis. Faux Fur Tippet, £20, available at Oasis. Rihanna’s a big fan of J Brand, and so will you be if you try these inky blue cigarette jeans. J Brand Cigarette Leg Jeans, £190, available at Matches. These leg-lengthening lace-up ankle boots complete the look perfectly. Sam Edelman Black Uma Lace Up High Heel Ankle Boots, £217, available at my-wardrobe.

Paloma Faith goes patch-print crazy

We love how Paloma Faith continues to push the boundaries in fashion. She works the wackiness of Gaga with the wearability of the catwalk, sprinkled with a touch of her own individual style spice. The singer was papped wearing a silver and gold applique Glair dress from the autumn/winter 2011 Vivienne Westwood Gold Label collection as she attended the Blackberry 7 launch in London this week. What’s more, in her signature anything-goes style, Paloma combined leopard print leggings, glitter Jeffrey Campbell Lolita boots, a gold apple hat and a suitably massive quiff with the ensemble. In terms of the metallic trend for the new season, Paloma is bang on with her mis-matched quirky look – but was she right to go all-out wacky, or should she have toned it down a little? Get the LFW look: Basso & Brooke’s dishevelled ponytail

Want to start wearing spring’s hair trends now? Good news – you can! We asked our hair friends at ghd for a few tips on how to recreate our favourite looks from the spring 2012 runways. First up – Basso and Brooke‘s dishevelled ponytail. We loved the simplicity of hair at Basso and Brooke – the natural, messy ponytail is easy and elegant, and is the perfect pared-down style to sit against the designers’ bold eye-popping prints. Plus, we reckon it’s really quite versatile, looking ethereal and a little edgy all at once. “With such a vivid collection the hair needed to be toned down and almost underplayed so as not to compete with the mixture of print and colour going on,” said Kenna, ghd’s creative director, who led the team backstage at Basso and Brooke this season. Here’s how you can recreate the look: Step 1: Blow dry a volumising spray like ghd’s Root Lift through lengths and ends of your hair to create a natural, slightly waved texture. Step 2: Using heated irons, wrap sections of your hair around the wand to create a haphazard bend. ghd recommend their Gold Classic and Max Stylers to achieve natural, different size waves. Step 3: Using your fingers, create a natural parting to suit your face shape. Don’t worry if it’s not quite straight or perfect – this look is all about appearing undone. Step 4: Backcomb hair at the crown to create volume – you can go build as much height as you like, but for this look a little lift works best. Step 5: Gather your hair into a low ponytail at the nape of your neck and secure loosely with a clear elastic band, allowing baby hairs to fall out. This will ensure a homemade effect.

Editor’s diary: what I’m wearing at LFW day 3

Today is a day of favourites. First on the agenda: one of my favourite designers, Margaret Howell, shortly followed by my favourite show at fashion week, Mulberry, and topped off with fun favourite Topshop Unique. And so, I’ve decided to wear a few of my favourite things, too. This dress is my new favourite colour and features some of my favourite details like crochet lace. It’s from Topshop, my high street favourite. I’m wearing it with my favourite jacket of the moment – a vintage grey wool blazer – that you might remember from Monday, and my favourite old vintage boots. Guess watch, Alex Monroe pear necklace and my massive mint green Mawi ring are my jewellery favourites and bling for the day. The Mulberry after-party takes place tonight too, another fashion week favourite. I just hope I survive until then – I’m running on four hours sleep and gradually growing drowsier by the minute. That’s not my favourite. Stay up to date with all our fashion week coverage here.

House of Dereon by Beyonce Launches at Selfridges

Beyonce Knowles must be a really happy bunny right now. Not only is she preggers and glowing but the singer seemed pretty excited with the launch of her line – House of Dereon in Selfridges yesterday. With London in the midst of Fashion Week the launch was timed perfectly! Joining Beyonce and her mother at the opening were Paloma Faith, Rosario Dawson, Eliza Doolittle and more… Guests were treated to a taster of the collection via a catwalk show, while Beyonce looked fab in a sequined suit. Now, it’s no secret that we’re not particularly House of Dereon fans, however featuring printed wrap and baby doll dresses, jumpsuits and mini skirts, the collection does hold something for everyone. Editor’s diary: what I’m wearing at LFW day 2

The awkward thing about getting up at 6am is not knowing what the weather’s like. And so, here I am, just arrived at Somerset house in a jumper and I’m sweltering. Still, it’s meant to rain later, so I’ll get the last laugh. Today I’m wearing a navy, camel and grey cable knit – my new fav – from Zara with a vintage leather skirt. My boots (which you can actually see this time) are also vintage, and those grey socks peeping out are from the school boy department at John Lewis. My Guess watch, Alex Monroe necklace and Me & Zena rabbit ring remain today (get used to the first two, I never take them off), and I’m wearing my Daisy Jewellery Chakra bracelet to give me a little boost in the creative department – I don’t think they do a thing, actually, but I figure it’s worth a shot. My morning kicks off with Ashish and ends with a presentation from knitwear wunderkids Sister by Sibling this evening – via Jasper Conran and Jaeger, among others. All my shows are at Somerset House today (hooray for minimal walking!), so let’s hope this outfit proves practical. Keep up to date with all our show reports here (and from today, you’ll see posts from our competition winners, too!).

Get the Look: Pippa Middleton’s city-chic shift

Last week Pippa Middleton was spotted out and about in the capital, grabbing a spot of lunch with a mystery man at Carluccio’s Restaurant in West London. While we’ve always been Team Kate all the way, we can’t help halving a soft spot for her younger sister, Pippa. She might be part of the aristocracy and is probably the most eligible bachelorette in the world, but there is something charmingly modest and unassuming about Pips that we just love. Oh, and she has, like, the best city chic style ever (or at least in the above picture). Wearing a simple navy and black shift dress and blazer, she looked smart, elegant and effortless – here’s how you can do the same…   This simple look is, thankfully, easy to achieve with a bit of know-how and the perfect statement piece – this navy and black shift dress from Joseph effortlessly elegant with just enough edge. Joseph Navy Bene Leather Wool Shift Dress, £325, available at my-wardrobe.com.   Throw on this must-have tailored black tuxedo jacket from Oasis for extra style kudos – it’s the perfect city-friendly partner to cool-classic shifts. Single-breasted Black Crepe Tuxedo Jacket, £70, available at Oasis.   If you were wondering, Pippa’s gorgeous black handbag, complete with gold pythons on the front, is from Bvlgari’s Leoni collection and will set you back somewhere in the region of £2,000. If that’s a bit out of your budget (er, yeah) you could always accessorize with one of the Middleton’s favourite high street brands, Reiss. This purse has the glam gold hardware without the hard-to-take-in price tag. Richmond over the should metal trim bag, £195, available at Reiss.

Jennifer Aniston dresses to impress in Alexander McQueen

Whilst out and about in London town last week, American actress Jennifer Aniston was spotted looking suitably British in this stunning mini dress by the late Alexander McQueen. The pre-aw11 black belted cape dress looked effortlessly stunning on Miss Aniston, with it’s sleeveless design and simplistic cut, this high-end LBD definitely did the fashionable job. We don’t even think women half her age would look this good…. Choosing to team her outfit with a beige clutch bag and traditional strappy sandals, Jen certainly oozed classic designer chic – after all, McQueen is undoubtedly a fail-safe label these days. We love Jen’s McQueen LBD, but what do you, the readers, think of her look? [poll id=”177″]

Camilla Al Fayed bought a controlling stake in Issa

The gorgeous Camilla Al Fayed – daughter of Egyptian billionaire Mohammed Al Fayed – has just bought a 51% controlling stake in the London-based designer label, Issa. Camilla is said to be focusing on growing the label, while Daniella Helayel, who retained 49 percent, will continue heading design. Before Camilla came along, Daniella financed and ran the whole business by herself since it’s launch in 2003 – but now Kate Middleton has become a massive fan of the label and publicly wears her dresses on an almost daily basis, pressure has undoubtedly been put on the company. But in a good way, of course. “I looked at a lot of investors, and Camilla came with the best fit. She has the infrastructure behind her, she’s well connected, and she will open a lot of doors,” said Daniella. The label also plan on launching an e-commerce site within the next month, alongside standalone stores in Britain and Daniella’s native country of Brazil, reports The Cut. We’re too excited for words.

Five minutes with Mulberry’s Emma Hill

Mulberry’s Emma Hill is one of those seldom stars who’s huge success hasn’t hindered her humility one bit. Before she joined the luxury British label in 2008, the brand was going from strength to strength under the creative direction of Stuart Vevers. Many thought he’d be a tough act to follow, but Emma’s distinct Brit-girl twist has brought the cult brand to a whole new bed of roses. Once celebrated solely for its iconic accessories, Mulberry’s ready-to-wear is now as sort after as its ‘It’ bags thanks, no doubt, to Hill’s hawkeye vision and inherent understanding of what women want to wear. But enough about the past, Mulberry’s – and Hill’s – future is getting more exciting by the minute. With the help of regular contributor Venetia Dearden, the designer’s spent the last three years putting together the brand’s latest venture: a photography book giving readers unprecedented access to never-before-seen images of Mulberry’s factory, of flame-haired models having a sneaky cig before fashion week, and of its many famed parties. We caught up with Emma at the book’s launch last week for a (very) quick chat about the book, her favourite holiday reads and what she’s got in store for the brand’s big 40th birthday… Tell us a bit about Mulberry the book… It was something we decided to do two years ago – well, over two years, because we were already thinking about the 40th [anniversary] – and we’d been working with Venetia Dearden. She’s such a great photographer and we love working with her so it all started from there, really. And also I think we’re quite a visual brand, we like to tell stories and we’re quite a mouthy brand so she [Venetia] became like a Mulberry and followed us round and came to shows. She’s gutted […]

Agyness Deyn lands a starring new role as erotic dancer

Agyness Deyn seems to taking a slightly different career move as of late, with news now circling the British model has bagged her first ever on-screen role… Agyness is set to play an erotic stripper named Flo in a re-make of the 1996 cult classic, Pusher – a story highlighting a week in the life of Frank, whose drug dealing escapades soon ware thin and land him in a whole heap of serious trouble. The first Pusher film was shot in Copenhagen, but the new version – directed by Luis Prieto – will be filmed in Shoreditch, London, alongside original producer Nicolas Winding Refn, reports Vogue UK. “Pusher was the film that launched my career and to have Luis Prieto direct the remake in London will be an exciting venture,” said Nicolas. “It’s a classic tale with strong characters and has an engaging narrative. To see my key characters, Frank and Tony in London, one of the most exciting and diverse cities in the world, is an opportunity not to be missed.” And apparently, Luis didn’t even know who Agyness was when he first met her, and got the part solely based on her impressive audition – nice one Aggy!

Pippa Middleton: an emerging style icon

If there’s one way to shoot to success overnight, you can bet it’s being the maid of honour at your sister, the Duchess of Cambridge’s wedding. Before Friday, Pippa Middleton was known as Kate’s lesser-known, slightly-uglier sister, but when she stepped out in her Alexander McQueen gown at the royal wedding, she caused quite the stir. With a rear perter than most – she now has an Ass Appreciation Society on Facebook with over 170,000 fans at time of publishing, by the way – she’s found herself at the forefront of fashion chatter as an emerging style icon, and we, for one, are rather intrigued by her new-found celebrity. Here, we delve into the style of Kate’s younger sister to see what all the fuss is about… Pippa shares her sisters affection for the high street, and stepping out for her very public departure the day after the wedding, she chose a classic royal blue blazer from Zara costing £69.99. It’s reserved and regal, made modern with white skinny jeans, but it’s an appropriate choice for the occasion. Classic and elegant, Pippa’s perhaps a bit more daring in her choice of colour and cut of dress that Kate. For her sister’s reception at Buckingham Palace, she opted for an emerald floor-length silk dress by Temperley with a plunging neckline and embellishment under the bust. A tad risque for the royals, but she totally pulled it off for the evening occasion. If we’re to believe the rumours that emerged before the royal wedding on Friday, Pippa was supposedly rather vocal towards what her bridesmaid dress should be like. While we very much doubt that was the case, it takes a killer figure and serious confidence to pull of a McQueen dress like that (sorry, we couldn’t resist the obligatory bum shot). […]

Elle Macpherson’s ravishing retro look

The school run for most Mums usually consists of throwing on whatever clothes are nearest whilst trying to hoard their kids out the door, but that’s not the case with Elle Macpherson, who’s probably the only woman on the planet who looks this fashionable when taking her kids to school. But then again, most Mums don’t get papped first thing in the morning. We love the retro ensemble that Elle was sporting in London last week. Fully embracing the hot Seventies trend, she made her legs look endless in high-waisted denim flares and stacked heels. The simple light blue shirt and tan accessories – yes, that’s a Mulberry Tillie – resulted in a fun and fabulous Chelsea Girl look from the Aussie beauty, and we admit it, we’ll definitely be attempting it in the coming weeks. Even her hair was a bouncy, honey blonde picture of perfection. She obviously woke up on the right side of the bed that morning. [poll id=”99″]
