Vero Moda comes to the UK

Our European readers may well be familiar with Vero Moda, but across on British shores it’s a different story – a lot of online oohing and ahhing through a finger-smudged screen, to be precise – but not for much longer. The Danish brand is opening its first UK flagship store next week!

All the gossip from Britain’s Next Top Model Live

The first ever Britain’s Next Top Model Live exhibition took place this weekend at London’s impressive ExCel Centre, so with our press passes at the ready and dressed to perfection, the MFL girls were ready to embrace the life of a model. And in more ways than one… The weekend wasn’t spent entirely sipping champagne and browsing the vintage clothing stalls – oh no – us girls had to earn our keep and take centre stage at the Style Icon Workshop to give daily discussions on this season’s biggest trends. Our editor Emily took to the mic as the expert guest speaker giving a confident, funny and insightful look into this season’s camel, leopard print and shearling trends, and brought in a crowd of fashion-hungry girls (and, occasionally, guys) day after day while us interns simply posed on stage in our outfits – oh the hardship. In our free time we explored the wonders of fashion, beauty and music. The stalls were certainly varied, from Zandra Rhodes footwear, Jonathon Aston tights, Bourjois makeup to even teeth whitening, though we had to pass on the latter as the fear of the dentist suddenly took over. Free makeovers and hair styling were also on offer for a bit of well-deserved pampering, all thanks to the London College of Beauty and the world-famous stylist, Adee Phelan. Musical sensations Eliza Doolittle and Diana Vickers provided the lyrical entertainment, while BNTM judge Charlie Speed left many a young girl in a flutter with his live interview on the main Kiss Open Catwalk stage. However, we all agreed that the highlight of our weekend was witnessing the amazing Chyna Whyne in action (although the Tia Maria cocktail bar came a close second). Aside from her jaw-droppingly stunning appearance, the singer-turned-stilletto-master gave a hilarious insight into how […]

Five minutes with jeweller Johnny Rocket

Johnny Rocket’s a name that should need no introduction, but what the heck, we’re going to give you one anyway. When John Pearce launched his jewellery label back in 1997, he had no idea it was going to become one of Britain’s most iconic accessories brands – but he’d hoped it would be. Quickly catching the eyes of all the people that matter in music and celebrity cultures, it was the fashion industry that first saw Johnny Rocket’s potential for super-stardom when he sealed deals to collaborate with Tom Ford and Julien Macdonald, among others, to create his signature innovative designs that fuse edgy rock-spirit with intricate expertise. Making somewhat of a name for itself as a coveted cool and quirky company, creative commissions have flown through the door for Johnny Rocket – he created Jamiroqui’s iconic warrior headdress, Kylie’s legendary hotpants and a bespoke Swarovski-encrusted guitar for the Darkness frontman Justin Hawkins among the rest. But Johnny Rocket’s no longer a one-man brand – in 2002, when Pearce was working on a diamond-embellished Ford KA with Julien Macdonald, he met Niall Paisley, an esteemed jeweller, who soon became a partner. Fast-forward to today, though, and Johnny Rocket’s been working its magic on a new project – with diet Coke, as it would happen, creating limited edition Swarovski-embellished bottles exclusively for Selfridges, where John will also be appearing today to help customers customise their own versions. We caught up with Johnny Rocket last week to find out more about the diet Coke collaboration, what makes jewellery so special, and what sparkle we should be looking out for this season… You’ve just announced a collaboration with diet Coke to create a limited edition collection of bottles – how did the collaboration come about? diet Coke approached me about working with them […]

Mulberry Alexa: the return of the ‘it’ bag

In years past, every season’s had its ‘it’ bag – there’s the Hermes Birkin, the Dior Saddle, Balenciaga’s Lariat, Chloe’s Paddington, Louis Vuitton’s Murakami and arguably, perhaps, Proenza Schouler’s PS1 – but one glance at more recent collections will tell you a different story. For almost two years now, the ‘it’ bag has been made redundant – it’s no longer cool to make a statement with a straight-off-the-runway designer piece, apparently. Well, that was until Mulberry created a little bag called the Alexa last September for spring/summer 2010 that’s sort of thrown a spanner in the ‘it’ bag works. So how comes a new ‘it’ bag’s been born in a non-‘it’ bag society? Well, there’s one word that’s responsible as much for their fall as it is their rise – the recession. When the markets crashed two years ago, our first and, frankly quite natural, reaction was to stop in our tracks, hide our wallets somewhere we’d never find them and our bank balances somewhere more secret still. But a year down the line we were beginning to see the birth of investment buys – fast, throw-away fashion wasn’t actually saving anyone any money. Long-term purchases made sense; they satisfied our penchant for an instant buy but became keep-forever pieces, too. Needless to say with the ‘it’ bag being coined kind of cool again, a whole flurry of fashionistas have been queuing up to get their hands on Mulberry’s hero handbag since – though at £695 a pop, their inherent popularity is still interesting. Waiting lists for the Alexa have, literally, hundreds of names chomping at the bit to be the first to scoop the new stock, meaning one thing: super record-breaking sell-out (yes, that’s a technical term). So high is the demand for the Alexa still, in fact, that […]

Rosamund Pike in Nicholas Kirkwood

This week saw the London premiere of new movie Made in Dagenham and with an A list cast there sure was an A list of outfits. Leading the style set Rosamund Pike followed on from her stylish turn at the Toronto Film Festival wearing a hypnotic print Mary Katrantzou Fall 2010 dress. Standing out on the red carpet the former bond in her one cap sleeve vibrant print dress looked absolutely stunning. The British actress upped the glam by pairing her interesting dress with interesting heels. Opting for purple satin Nicholas Kirkwood court shoes. The bronze pearl platforms really finished this outfit off. Keeping everything else simple to emphasis her gorgeous dress and killer heels, we have to say Rosamund Pike really knows what she’s doing to stand out from the rest of the fashionistas.

Why we love Aruna Seth (the pretty shoes definitely help)

Last week MFL were lucky enough to get an insight into the mind of Aruna Seth, shoe designer to the stars and all round lovely hostess. If you haven’t heard of Aruna yet, don’t worry, you soon will – this was a space brimming with Swarovski crystals and elegantly designed courts; all packed into London’s Mandeville hotel. Apart from chatting to Aruna about her latest escapades, we took a peek at both the bridal collection (a market Seth seems to own) and the more accessible winter collection. Split into three sections, we were first treated to an all-black crystal fest, where well-constructed heels met perfectly-arranged sparkle. If winter boot shopping is getting you down, we can personally recommend Aruna’s calf length suede pair, complete with pom poms and crystal draping – who said the weather should stop our fun? Next up was an all-nude selection, where butterfly-embellished flats sat alongside snakeskin platforms. Seth is really trying to expand her remit, and is bringing her craftsmanship to the fashion table with her, thank heavens! We have to admit, our favourite part of the night by far was sampling the bridal collection – pale shoes that are transferable to a night out on the town. Aruna has carved a name for herself in producing quality, well-attended pieces that are built to last – we were chuffed to discover a padded sole made for pounding the pavements in, who’d have thought? – which is why, despite the wedding tag, we’re seriously considering bringing some of those stunning crystal bow heels into our wardrobes as soon as possible. Alongside Aruna’s work sat another art form – celebrity snaps through the ages by Terry O’Neill, Danny Clifford and Douglas Kirkland. Occasional glances at the off-duty Beatles, or Audrey Hepburn relaxing in a swimming pool, definitely […]

First look: Zooey Deschanel for Rimmel

Is it bad to admit that until last night we’d sort of forgotten about Rimmel’s new Zooey Deschanel coup? Well, let’s just say we quickly remembered when we caught a glimpse of the first ad campaign starring the actress at Coty’s bloggers event yesterday. And we don’t think we’ll be forgetting again any time soon. The also singer and style icon is fronting Rimmel’s new Lash Accelerator mascara, which promises to encourage your lashes to grow (more on that soon), and is set for release at the beginning of September. We caught a glimpse of the new campaign last night and, naturally, Zooey looks absolutely stunning in that effortlessly pretty way she seems to project so easily – and may we just say, those big doe eyes are the perfect tools to promote a mascara. Apparently there’s more to come from Ms. Deschanel too, with campaigns for other Rimmel products already queuing up – we’re aware we now sound a little obsessed, but as the first non-British girl to front a campaign for the beauty brand, Zooey’s working wonders for Rimmel; she’s got that accessible beauty nailed. Congrats all round, we think. Psst, there’s more on the Coty bloggers event coming next week…

Round the table with Henry Holland and Gemma Cairney

As you well know, here at MFL we’re rather partial to a fashion TV series or two, and none more so than Frock Me with TK Maxx, back on TV screens in the UK for a second series to brighten up the bleakest Sunday mornings. Hosted by super-style icon Alexa Chung, London designer Henry Holland and Radio 1 style expert Gemma Cairney, Frock Me follows fashion through its rampant relationship with music as it highlights top trends for the season, chats to the very best in the business, gives DIY styling tips, and shows you how people on the street are working – and styling – the season’s best trends… in a nutshell. Naturally, we were obliged to catch up with Henry and Gemma when TK Maxx invited us to London’s Zetter hotel last week where, alongside a few other bloggers, we quizzed the pair on all things Frock Me and fashion. We’ve seen three shows so far, can you tell us what we can expect from the rest of the series? HH: There’s a show about romance, there’s a show about Americana, there’s a show about festivals; so there’s those theme-shows, and you can expect to see Sophie Ellis-Bextor, you can expect to see Gabriella Cilmi, we’ve had the Future Heads, Marina and the Diamonds, Paloma Faith – she was good, and everyone did live too. And then there’s some very ridiculous sketches… GC: We’ve got prints in Bristol [just aired] which was fun, I actually put a couple up against each other for the Frock Off, and the girl really looks like Alexa so that was good. And then we’ve got in Birmingham Americana – we ended up with about 200 people surrounding us in the middle of town for the final section, so we were kind of […]
