We haven’t been too keen on the Gold by Giles capsule collections for New Look. While the first two collections have had a couple of cute pieces they just haven’t been strong enough to force us to sit up and take notice. But Giles must be doing something right because he’s just released his third collection for the high street retailer and just in time for the party season too. Out of all three, this collection is definitely the most successful and coincidentally there are three party dresses in particular which caught our eye.

Model Profile: Ali Stephens

ali_stephens_final.jpgGoogle the name “Ali Stephens” and you’re likely to find a few dozen sites featuring a girl whose beauty is simply otherworldly, clad in Balenciaga, Chloé, and Prada (among many others) strutting down the runway like a seasoned pro. When I searched for her, I kept clicking through the list, hoping to see more photos (really, why were there so few!) and started coming across statistics for a cross-country runner named Ali Stephens from Utah with an interest in marine biology.

As it turns out, these two girls are one and the same: the girl that glides down the catwalk can also run a blisteringly fast cross-country race (albeit in more practical shoes). And the reason why photographs are relatively few and far between? Ali was discovered only last August—yes, August of 2007—yet landed on the runways of the crème de la crème of designers’ weeks later in the Milan and Paris shows.

There’s a fun and easy way to see for yourself that vampirism is fashionable. Take a tube of red paint and a small paintbrush, and paint fangs on nearly any ad from any fashion magazine. Vogue, Marie Claire, Elle…it doesn’t matter. The fangs will look perfectly natural. When I first started writing Blood is the New Black, I saved tear-outs from magazines of models that looked particularly dead—or undead as the case may be—but then I stopped, because there were so many there was hardly a point.
