Breakfast with designer William Tempest…

Actress Emma Watson made the headlines last week. Why? Because of the gorgeous dress she wore to the L.A premiere of her new movie The Tales of Despereaux. And because she opted for an up-coming designer over the likes of Chanel or McQueen. The chosen one was of course designer quaint cafe in Bermondsey he mentioned the possibility that Emma would wear one of his exquisite designs. I for one am pleased William made it to the red carpet…take a look at his collection for

How to Wear Coloured Mascara

Like leggings, ra-ra skirts, cone bra tops and corsets before it, another style moment from the eighties is making itself felt again. Umm humm coloured mascara is back, with new bold colour lines being added to major make up brands collections. And I for one am a big fan. There’s blue, purple, green, maroon, even gold.

New Designer: Go glam with CC Skye

Combining old fashioned glamour with a fashion forward edge LA Jewellery designer, CC Skye boasts an impressive celebrity following, with style icons such as Nicole Richie, Cameron Diaz and Hilary Duff seen out and about flaunting her take on bling. This young LA crowd are perhaps indicative of CC Skye’s look, which she describes as embracing the ‘IT girl style.’ Her designs often incorporate the season’s ‘must haves,’ such as last seasons (perhaps some what overdone) Chanel inspired chain-strap which morphs so successfully here into a bracelet.

We Heart Bebaroque!

As something of a hosiery enthusiast, I am predictably exited by the abundance of pretty pretty tights on the A/W catwalks. Trouble is, whilst I can admire the illustrated legs of Chanel, Chloe and Rodarte from afar with an adoring sigh, the chances of ever getting my chipped-nail-varnished paws on such items of beauty are rather low. After months of searching for tights of a more affordable nature (given the inevitable likelihood of laddering), and with only a feeble pair of lace tights to show as my spoils, I was delighted to come across

The Evolution Of Burberry

Like many other iconic fashion houses Burberry Prorsum has its signatures pieces. For Louis Vuitton it’s the eloping “L” and “V” and for Chanel it’s the luxurious incorporation of tweed that has existed within the threadwork of the house since it was well established in the 1920s. Like many of the influential houses that are still in existence they’ve reinvented that once iconic symbol with ultra-modern relevance.

The Gladiator Mandal

Bernard Wilhelm Spring 2009 When the gladiator sandal sashayed down Chanel’s resort 2007 collection, a new mania was heralded. But with all this hype, fanfare and brouhaha over women and their newly beloved gladiator sandal, where do men factor in? The flurry of sprightly coloured and drab sandals Miu Miu sent out for their SS07 men’s collection paled in comparison to Chanel’s Amazon-like footwear . And as the gladiator sandal trail blazed its way into the closets of women, men were in a chasm of sorts, stuck with the fashionably faux-pas plastic flip-flop and the odd Miu Miu sandal. Fast forward to today and men can now clamour for the so-called gladiator mandal, or man-sandals, at very affordable prices too. Topman and HE by Mango carry some urbane gladiator mandals that effectively blot out the femininity that surround this style of footwear. Here are our top 3 picks.

Fashion Meets Technology Again: Dior Homme’s iPhone Holder

When fashion last teamed up with technology, My Fashion Life was left wowed at aesthetics, but rather disappointed over the functionality of the Nokia 7900 Crystal Prism. Now nothing can be taken away from the visual masterpiece Fredrique Dubal brought to us in the Prism. However, such is the mind of the average consumer that when fashion is infused into technology and malfunction occurs, fashion tends to be seen as fall guy. For instance, Nokia’s move to beautify the Prism may be viewed as the oversight in delivering a functional phone. Well fashion, courtesy of Dior Homme, has ventured into the lifestyle/technology market again, but this time around fashion has provided a foil to an already venerated piece of technology: the iPhone.

Red Carpet: Goodbye Gowns?

Is it the demise of the gown? Big-time fashion and film events like the Oscars, Golden Globes, the Met gala and now Cannes have made gowns an almost de rigueur fashion choice for all of the A-listers present. Yet recently, some ladies have dared to be different and have sported ultra-glam dresses that show more than a little leg.

Style Crush: Ashlee Simpson

Okay, I am admitting this with great reluctance, but … I really like Ashlee Simpson’s style. This is frustrating to me, because I’m not entirely sure what she does (the lip-synching snafu of a few years ago proves that she receives some, um, assistance), and she’s just a little too ooey-gooey with Pete Wentz. But I really have a thing for her look.

Men Don’t Make Passes at Women Who Wear Glasses!

Whomever coined the above phrase was seriously deluded. Granted, the frame choices of yore lacked much of the style that today’s glasses do, but eyeglasses can be seriously sexy. Gucci, Valentino, and now Marc Jacobs all have eyeglass frames for everyday wear that are as much of a personal style choice as what you put on your feet or wear out to an important event.

Comfy Shoes: Love Your Footsies

If you live in a city, it is inevitable that you walk around a lot. In Manhattan, which is home to some of the most intensely fashion-oriented women I’ve ever seen (just wander around at 9 am on a Sunday on the Upper East Side to see women perfectly coiffed and Chanel-ed and you will understand what I mean), fashion and practicality are often at odds in the footwear department. Having had fairly serious foot surgery last summer, I’m more cautious than most when it comes to traipsing around the city in heels. Consequently, I’m constantly on the prowl for cute shoes that won’t destroy my feet. Below, find a list of shoes that are a healthy mix of fashion and function.

Kate Moss: Stars In Her Eyes!

If you didn’t know it already…stars are going to be a massive trend this year. Both Chanel and YSL went all starry eyed on us for their Spring/Summer 08 collections and its almost inevitable that the high street will follow suit. But just to make it official Kate Moss stamped her approval on the trend – as she celebrated her birthday last night at the Dorchester – with a large gold star painted around her eye and wearing a gold star print jumpsuit underneath a sheer (oh yes…sheer delicate fabrics will be popular too) black sequined gown. As always when Kate gets glammed up, she looks amazing!

Shwopping: The way of the future?

Shop without leaving the house or spending a cent? Trade in those old Manolo Blahniks for a Chanel bag? Are the fashion gods finally thanking us for our voracious shopping habits or are they playing a ‘too good to be true’ trick on us? The concept of ‘shwopping’ is just starting to hit the web by storm. Similar to those clothing swap parties that have been going on with girlfriends around the world for some time, shwopping lets us strategically get rid of unwanted clothing and accessories while getting something that we would actually wear in return. This new method of shopping supports the eco-friendly and cost-conscious, while creating a bigger market for unique and hard to find garments.

Reviews: The Collection by Gioia Diliberto

The Collection by Gioia Diliberto tells the story of Isabelle Varlet, a provincial French seamstress who heads to Paris in the aftermath of WWI to start a new life for herself at the fledgling fashion house of Coco Chanel. The true magic of the story lies in the character of the Mademoiselle herself, the one and only Coco Chanel. At turns both rude and charming, the attraction to Mademoiselle is her willingness to fight for her vision, and trod over anyone and everyone who might step in her way. Whether changing her accent to resemble the sophisticated French of a native Parisienne or humiliating a head seamstress in front of dozens, it is impossible to forget that this woman’s vision founded one of the most recognizable names in couture despite being unable to draw or sew.

News: Fendi’s Great Wall of Ambition

It appears the latest trend among fashion houses with big bucks is the search for original and wonderful ways to stage their collections. Karl Lagerfeld upped the stakes with the Chanel Cruise Collection 2008 held in Los Angeles, at the Santa Monica Airport and which employed the use of private jets emblazoned with it’s Logo. And now he promises to go one better with a Fendi runway show to be held on the Great Wall of China in October. The presentation is a strategic move on the part of parent company LVMH who hope it’ll boost sales subsequently making Fendi a stronger global brand. Impressive wise this ranks high but I wonder what the options were before they settled on the Great Wall? Perhaps Buckingham Palace or the Taj Mahal? As much as the theatrics add glamour and excitement sometimes I do lament on what happened to just having a good old fashioned show with lights, music and stick thin models in need of a hearty meal. I’m not a plastic bag!

The hype behind this simple yet creative eco-friendly creation from Anya Hindmarch is incredible and be warned demand is high! The I’m not a plastic bag goes on sale today and if you’re looking to get your paws on this re-useable shopping bag which retails at £5 each then get down to your nearest Anya Hindmarch store quick time. Now personally I love this bag and I adore Hindmarch even more for designing it, but I do wonder if like every other must-have, everyone is dying to get one because of hype rather than the genius of the design. It’s been promoted endlessly with reports of Lily Cole, Erin O’Connor, and Keira Knightley seen bag in hand and the sceptical side of me wonders if they forked out their fiver, or if they received the bag as a gift. Either way as a result of the celebrity endorsement the bags were going for £200 on eBay. Madness! While it is a cute alternative to the plastic bag, there are and have been loads of stylish eco-friendly bags on the market for a while now so what makes this one better than the rest?

Oscar Unfortunates…..

Unfortunately for every great gown choice on the red carpet, there were a couple of bad ones and whilst I didn’t feel there were too many style fatalities, the few that were spotted left me almost speechless. The most undesirable of the night had to be Meryl Streep in Prada. I can’t completely blame Ms Streep for this disaster, this concoction just wouldn’t look good on anyone, the length and shape are just plain wrong and the overall design is frumpy. However the decision to enhance the visual discomfort experienced by onlookers by adding the Native American style accessories was somebody’s doing! In all honesty it’s hard to recognise the Hollywood icon, especially after seeing her in The Devil wears Prada where she looked incredibly chic in every frame. Another misfortunate who didn’t quite live up to expectations was Kirsten Dunst, who failed to shine in Chanel couture, the style was unflattering and the use of extreme detail and feathering was more showgirl than starlet.

Sex and the City film in the pipeline

I know that I’m in it – I have a nice part in it, I’m told. If it happens, we should film it in the early fall I think.

First revisited on the runway six months ago the sixties trend looks set to run and run, especially with the impending release of Factory Girl, the film about Edie Sedgewick that’s set to make Sienna Miller an even bigger star than she already is. Burberry’s sexy Spring/Summer 07 campaign by Mario Testino took inspiration from the 1960’s photography of Cecil Beaton, and saw Kate Moss leading the troupe of beautiful people dressed in cream and silver trapeze-shaped coats with oversize buttons.
