Five fab snakeskin pieces under £50

Here at MFL, we love all types of animal print; leopard, zebra, tiger, crocodile. You name it, we’ve pretty much tried it. But there is one print that we have special style affection for- snakeskin. There is something really cool and effortless about snakeskin that other prints just can’t touch. Leopard print might look glam on certain occasions but, worn the wrong way and you might just verge into Bet Lynch territory (shudder). Snakeskin on the other hand, is more subtle, more refined and more blasé. We love! Thankfully it is super-hot right now and investing in a piece will see you right through summer. Here are our top five picks which are all, miraculously, under £50. 1.If you haven’t ventured into the style mecca that is Stylist Pick, you need to now. This clutch and purse set is modern, fashion forward and panelled with just the right amount of snakeskin. Cindy Multi Clutch and Purse Set, £39.95, available at Stylist Pick 2. What could be more chic than this gorgeous little leather snakeskin flap over wallet from Reiss. We love the simplistic design and luxe feel. Oh and did we mention it’s in the sale? Reiss Mario Square Flap Over Wallet, £69 £34, available at Reiss 3.Everyone from Rihanna to Alexa are huge fans of hi-tops and these snakeskin ones from Stylist Pick tick all the right boxes. Wear with rolled up jeans and a loose knit sweater now and with shorts and a vest when summer, eventually, arrives. Elva Snake Print Hi-tops, £39.95, available at Stylist Pick 4.You’ll have the moves like Jagger in these MOTO supersoft skinny jeans. Sexy, rock ‘n’ roll and oh so cool. Who said coloured jeans were dead? Here are our faves!

Last Summer, the colour blocking trend saw us sporting bright hues all over. Even the humble jean got a colourful makeover, with bright jeans becoming one of summer 2011’s biggest hits. Then, as the evenings drew in and the colder months arrived, we swapped our crayola-coloured jeans for the more autumn-appropriate colour combinations of  trusty dark denims. But alas, now the spring/summer collections are set to return and so too, we’re pleased to announce, is the bright jean! This season, the bright jean is back, this time in pretty pastels and fabulous fluros, with everything from the trusty skinny jean to the seventies flare sporting a splash of colour. Blooming brilliant, we say! From Topshop’s ultra-flattering high waist peppermint Jaime jeans to Christopher Kane’s fantastic neon transformation of the classic pair of J Brands, we’ve selected our favourite bright jeans of the new season: Topshop high waist peppermint Jaime jeans, £40, available from Topshop. J Brand Shocking Pink Mid Rise Skinny, £205, available from my-wardrobe.com. Animal prints are oh so right, but when pulled together carelessly, can quickly become oh so wrong….. 2011 in news: 10 things that shook the fashion world this year

Among the clinking glasses of endless mulled wine toasts, pre-Christmas mince pies and secret peeling of presents under the Christmas tree, there’s just one more thing left to do this year: reminisce. 2011 has been a significant year for the fashion world. Craze-inducing collaborations, a royal wedding remembered more for the dress than the extra public holiday and fashion losses so large the entire industry collectively wept. And what have we done with all that? Rounded it up, of course. Below, we bring you fashion’s best and most moments shocking of 2011. 1. The royal wedding dress April 29th will forever be marked in our minds as a date that made unparalleled fashion history. Alexander McQueen’s creative head, Sarah Burton, was spotted entering the Goring Hotel merely hours before the royal wedding took place, sparking rumours she’d designed the dress. Indeed, she was bestowed with this burdensome duty and boy, did she deliver! The exquisite appliquéd lace dress acquired Burton deserved acclaim in the fashion world, culminating in an unsurprisingly big win at the British Fashion Awards last month.  A big year for Sarah Burton – an even bigger year for fashion. 2. John Galliano – Dismissal from Dior and namesake label Probably the most gulp-inducing, tear-jerking headline to emerge from the fashion world this year was the dismissal of Dior design master, John Galliano. Arrested in a Parisian cafe after allegedly assaulting and racially abusing a couple using anti-Semitic remarks, the allegations against the couture creator were all founded in court, resulting in his rapid fall though the echelons of the very industry that homed him. His immediate suspension from Dior, and later from his namesake label, sparked an emotional outcry amongst Galliano’s closest industry friends. Whilst the hunt for his replacement is said to be in its final […]

The weather outside is frightful – at least it will be come tomorrow. With snow set to blast through much of Britain after nightfall, we have a feeling it’s going to get freezing around here. Will your jeans soak through? Is yetti a step too far? Don’t worry! We’ve hunted down the hottest snow-proof wears that promise to keep you dapper and dry when the frozen stuff falls – and the best part is they’ll work for a whole bundle of other winter weather conditions, too. Jameela Jamil joins the Versace for H&M brigade

Geez, the celebs are really loving Versace for H&M at the minute! Last week we reported that Kelly Rowland had worn a leather jacket from the collection to X Factor rehearsals and that very same jacket was recently spotted on Jameela Jamil. The T4 presenter turned up to DJ at InStyle magazine’s 10th anniversary party. We have to say, we loved the jacket on Kelly but Jameela showed how it can look equally as good dressed up for the evening. Jameela is a self proclaimed Topshop aficionado and her gorgeous purple velvet mini dress certainly ticks all the right boxes. She opted for bare legs and ankle boots, which seems to be a T4 presenter uniform – yes we’re talking to you too, Alexa! Her wine coloured boots were also Topshop and coordinated well with the outfit, and her trademark bowler hat finished the look with a quirky twist. Love! For dressing top to toe in high street and looking fantastic with it, we give a big thumbs up to Jameela! [poll id=”246″]

How to wear the gilet and our top 5 picks

We’re going to let you into a secret: there’s an extra-wow way we’ll be keeping warm this winter, and it starts with a gilet. Bodywarmer, sleeveless jacket, call it what you will: but this season gilets are hot, and they’re guaranteed to keep you snug – and seriously stylish – when the temperature drops. Adding super-luxe texture to any look, this season’s gilets are all about feel-me fabrics – faux fur, shearling or suede (the shaggier the better, we say) – to create depth and interest, but styling them can be tricky. Get it right, you’ll look like one chic chick; get it wrong, you’ll look like the local cat lady. The trick? Keeping the rest of your silhouette simple and streamlined. A long-sleeved top and second-skin trousers (bonus points for leather) will look effortlessly cool teamed with a contrasting centre-piece, while layering a frizzy faux fur gilet over a fitted maxi dress and cuban heels will create an inspired boho edge. We’ve picked out our favourite five gilets to help you on your way to warm this season – see below for our top picks. Isabel Marant Linka curly lambskin gilet, £2,870, available at Matches. Roland Mouret Sorcar vest, £1,485 £595, available at mytheresa. Fischer fur section gilet, £1,350, available at Harrods. Premium sheepskin gilet, £185, available at Topshop. Vince shearling drape gilet, £1,188, available at my-wardrobe.

Get the look: Tali Lennox’s urban-boho in New York

As Annie Lennox’s daughter, you might think Tali Lennox might have to put up with living in the shadow of her mother. But that’s definitely not the case as, especially in the style stakes, she’s proved she’s undoubtedly a star in her own right. Rocking an urban-boho mash up at New York’s Fashion’s Night Out, she looked a breath of fresh air and a thousand miles apart from those celebs who feel they have to wear floor-length gowns and Cartier jewels on every red carpet. Her edgy but whimsical blouse and shorts combo was cleverly interjected by a few key accessories. And from the glam fur shrug to the effortlessly stylish fedora, we have gone head-over-heels for Tali’s youthful and carefree look. Here is how to acheive it: A cool fur shrug will be your best friend this winter – glamorous, a little bit rock chic and the perfect party season essential. Get the look: Rosie Huntington-Whiteley’s hot autumn look

This time of year can sometimes be difficult to dress for – not quite cold enough for full-on winter coats but not warm enough to surpass the woolens. Well would take a look at this: Rosie Huntington-Whiteley was recently pictured on the streets of London wearing this perfectly autumnal ensemble. The sweater is having a major fashion moment at the minute and her striped Joie piece is the perfect blend of slouchy and chic. Rosie paired the sweater with skin-tight dark denim and black suede knee-high wedge boots (which we’re more than a little bit jealous of). We also loved her Seventies-style wide-brimmed floppy hat in that gorgeous plum colour – very Bianca Jagger, non? She finished the look with a classic super-sized black tote which pulled the look together effortlessly. Of course, most of us will never get to be a Burberry muse like Rosie. Or replace Megan Fox in a movie. Or be a London socialite. Bad times, but we can totally steal her look. See how: The focus of this outfit is the striped jumper. Rosie’s gorgeous Joie number will set you back £270, but we’ve found this wonderful mohair version from Topshop for a far more purse-friendly £42. Sweet! Knitted Stripe Mohair Jumper, £42, available at Topshop. When wearing knee high boots it’s important to wear jeans as slim-cut as possible to avoid adding unnecessary bulk. Investing in a good pair will withstand all the wear and tear winter has to throw at them – this wax-coated pair from J Brand is perfect. J Brand waxed skinny jeans, £199, available at Oxygen Boutique. Rosie’s suede wedge boots not only look great, they’re also sturdy and practical on foot. This pair from House of Harlow has a definite touch of the Seventies to them and works wonders […]

Five minutes with model Valerie van der Graaf

At 20 years old, Valerie van der Graaf is, perhaps, a little older than some of her peers just making a name for themselves in the modelling industry – but then again, they haven’t just landed the most prestigious place on one of fashion’s most iconic calendars. The Dutch model, who was discovered on Facebook aged 15 and has since landed campaigns for Hilfiger Denim and Topshop, has just scooped the biggest gig of her career – the cover girl of Lavazza’s 20th anniversary calendar for 2012 – and with bouncy blonde hair, strong brows and curves to die for, we don’t suppose she’ll struggle to score more. We caught up with Valerie at Lavazza’s 20th anniversary launch to chat modelling life, dream designers and shopping… Tell us a bit about your involvement with Lavazza… I was really honoured to be chosen as one of the cover girls for the Lavazza calendar. It’s amazing and really good for my career, and it’s great to work with the photographer [Ellen von Unwerth]. Would you want to do it again? Yes! What were Lavazza like to work with? They are lovely. It was a really great day because the team were so creative, it wasn’t like shooting for a product. What do you think the calendar means to people? The calendar is art and I love the pictures of the 2011 calendar. I see them at airports and you can’t really get away from them. I think everyone knows about it in some kind of way. Who’s your favourite photographer? I would love to work with Mark Seliger. I loved his calendar for 2011, it’s beautiful. How did you first break into the modelling industry? I was 15 and a modelling agency in Holland found me on a social network online. Someone […]

Get the look: Alexa Chung in Miu Miu

Long-time Miu Miu fan Alexa Chung looked super-stylish at the label’s show in Paris earlier this month. Wearing a trademark heritage-girly ensemble, she looked feminine and sweet, and did an excellent job at flying the flag for us Brits in Paris. And since she’s (almost) single-handedly responsible for the resurgence of peter pan collars, it’s really no surprise that she chose to wear this white ruffled peter pan collared blouse from Miu Miu. She paired it with a cute navy check pinafore dress, also by Miu Miu, an adorable pair of black satin bow heels and a studded super-sized clutch bag by Valentino. The good news? With a bit of know how, anyone can recreate this look with ease. Here’s how: The foundation for this look is a beautifully cut ruffled blouse. This one from Moschino Cheap & Cheap might blow your budget but, you have to admit, it is rather gorgeous. Moschino Cheap & Chic lace ruffle front blouse, £450, available at my-wardrobe. Next, opt for a navy v-neck sleeveless dress to recreate Alexa’s pinafore-style look. This classic Prince of Wales check dress from Stella McCartney is the perfect shape and will prove super versatile for your wardrobe. Stella McCartney Prince of Wales check dress, £855, available at Matches. A black bow pump adds a sweet chicness to Alexa’s look – try these cute flats from Oasis as a purse-friendly option. Annabella bow ballerina pumps, £25, available at Oasis. Add to this a giant neutral-toned clutch and you’re onto a winner. This studded one from Topshop is the next best thing to Alexa’s Valentino beauty. Grey mixed stud clutch, £25, available at Topshop.

Chloe Moretz does grown-up glam in D&G

As young teenagers, we were totally excited at the prospect of buying a new outfit from Topshop or Miss Selfridge. If we could scrabble together enough money for a new dress or pair of jeans, it was happy days all the way. Chloe Moretz, on the other hand, prefers D&G. Wearing Dolce head-to-toe, the actress looked an absolute star at this week’s Scream Awards 2011 held in Hollywood this week. Can you believe this girl is only 14? We were instantly enamoured by her long-sleeved black lace top, monochrome embroidered skirt and slinky black heels. While some teens might have looked slightly awkward in such a grown-up ensemble, Chloe looked completely comfortable as she posed for pictures, and wearing her hair in a side-swept loose wave she looked every inch the Hollywood starlet. With the best designers in the world at Chloe’s disposal, the teenage actress looks unstoppable in the style stakes… [poll id=”222″]

Lunchtime buy: Car print jumpsuit by Unique

The Prada spring 2012 Show in Milan blew us all away again this season. From the sequins and snake print that Miuccia served up for AW11, for SS12 we were presented another fresh collection: this time it was all about ‘Donna e Motori’ – women and cars. The 1950s hot rod car print featured on many of the pieces, which basically means it will be a massive trend for next summer. And Topshop is so ahead of the game that it already has the car print in store now. The store’s 100% silk car print jumpsuit in brown with a beau bib front from the Unique collection is totally on par for next sesaon – but we want to wear it right about now. Although, admittedly, the cars on Topshop’s playsuit are more Only Fools and Horses than the Grease-inspired 1950s numbers that Prada presented, but we think that’s what makes it so quaint. Wear with brogues and a polo neck for daytime chic now, and then rev it up for night time glamour with platforms. Speed on down! Car print jumpsuit by Unique, £140, available at Topshop.

Lunchtime buy: Boutique by Jaeger spot sequin dress

Marc Jacobs was the one that started it, with spots featuring everywhere in his AW11 collection, and the likes of David Koma, Topshop Unique and Stella McCartney all followed suit with various forms of dots, dalmation print, polkas and pom poms. There’s no denying it’s an unashamedly fun print, and with their ability to become a classic, spots are a guaranteed investment this season. This monochrome embellished dressed from Jaeger really hits the fun spot (pardon the pun). Its sequin spot print promises party times ahead, whilst its flattering shift shape and classic black and white colour combo bring this dress into timeless territory. That makes this dress the perfect party piece to bring a bit of fun into your life over the gloomy winter months and see you right through to the seasonal celebrations at the end of the year. And since it’s Friday, there’s no better place to start! Boutique spot sequin dress, £199, available at Jaeger.

Get the look: Louise Roe in Kurt Geiger

When TV presenter and fashion journalist Louise Roe attended the Frye flagship store opening in New York last month, we couldn’t help but admire her amazingly pulled-together look. Thankfully, with a few key pieces you can pull this look off yourself with absolute ease. Now that’s what we like to hear. This zingy and vibrant silk blazer will really make you stand out from the crowd and makes a refreshing change to evening wear. Tried and tested: Simone Pérèle Aura invisible control briefs

It’s back to the trusty control wear I go as soon as I begin to feel, well, out of control. This time, I treated my tummy to some Parisian T.L.C. when I decided to spend the day in Simone Pérèle Aura invisible control briefs. I started the day dreaming of a Halle Berry-esque flat tummy, as I removed my flab saviour from the candy pink tissue wrapping it arrived in. Sampling the Aura invisible control briefs in white, their microfibre material and lightweight feel proved an instant scorer with me when it came to comfort points. Embellished with a touch of satin and a Swarovski butterfly, and looking rather pretty considering the granny-like connotations slimming undergarments are usually associated with, I wasn’t entirely convinced by their slimming potential. The lightweight material almost made the briefs feel too soft against my tummy and seemed to be missing the ‘constricting’ factor. That sucked-in feeling I’m usually promised by miracle briefs wasn’t delivered and, after a day of parading around in them, the Berry-esque tummy I had desired was definitely missing. It was much like wearing normal underwear, and above all, the briefs don’t envelope the tummy, instead sitting on the naval line causing that slightly uncomfortable overspill of stomach flab I unashamedly sport – and one so ridiculously evident in a body con dress. Sadly, the Simone Pérèle Aura invisible control briefs bought a sense of uncontrollability, and after initially opting for a snugly fitted top, I decided to swap this daring wardrobe choice for my trusty billowy Topshop blouse I have relied on in several tightly squeezed situations before. Simone Pérèle Aura Invisible Control Briefs, £40.95, available at Simone Pérèle.

Editor’s diary: what I’m wearing at LFW day 3

Today is a day of favourites. First on the agenda: one of my favourite designers, Margaret Howell, shortly followed by my favourite show at fashion week, Mulberry, and topped off with fun favourite Topshop Unique. And so, I’ve decided to wear a few of my favourite things, too. This dress is my new favourite colour and features some of my favourite details like crochet lace. It’s from Topshop, my high street favourite. I’m wearing it with my favourite jacket of the moment – a vintage grey wool blazer – that you might remember from Monday, and my favourite old vintage boots. Guess watch, Alex Monroe pear necklace and my massive mint green Mawi ring are my jewellery favourites and bling for the day. The Mulberry after-party takes place tonight too, another fashion week favourite. I just hope I survive until then – I’m running on four hours sleep and gradually growing drowsier by the minute. That’s not my favourite. Stay up to date with all our fashion week coverage here.

Editor’s diary: what I’m wearing to LFW day 1

London Fashion Week kicked off this morning on what the weather girl promised to be a gloomy day. Actually, it’s rather hot sunny, and I’m at risk of overheating. Great. You might think I’d begin the first day of fashion processions with a bang, but in fact, I’m doing quite the opposite (I do like to ease myself in gently). Today I’m wearing my boyfriend’s H&M T-shirt (let’s hope he doesn’t mind) tucked into a pair of Kristen high-waist black skinnies from Topshop, a vintage grey wool blazer, Falke socks (so silky!) and nude snake wedges from TK Maxx (not that you can see the latter. Sorry). And for a bit of bling, my rose gold Guess watch, Me & Zena rabbit ring and Alex Monroe pair necklace do the job. Today started, as always, with London opener Paul Costelloe and ends with PPQ – it’s a long old haul, but stay tuned for our show reviews to come. NB: This picture was taken on the go, just after I had my hair done at the Toni & Guy blow out bar (hence the horribly blurry Blackberry shot – please don’t expect it to be this well-groomed everyday.

Editor’s survival kit: London Fashion Week

As New York kicked off the month-long fashion processions last week, so London Fashion Week falls this Friday. We should be prepared, given that it only happens twice a year, but somehow it always manages to spring round the corner quicker than summer can stick around. And so, I find myself in the same situation every season. What the hell do I wear? What bag do I take to carry all my stuff? What shoes will I wear to combat the cobbles (and which flats should I take as precaution?)? While I’ve yet to answer any of those questions, there are a few things I know I’ll need: my can’t-survive-without-them essentials. From moisturiser to mints, these are things that litter my bag, without fail, every fashion week; the things that help me function; the things that help me breathe a little easier: my survival kit. So yes, while I do risk tripping over the dirt track due to some poorly-conceived heels, at least I’ll have hydrated skin. When I get stressed, so does my skin. I always keep a hand-sized tube of moisturiser in my bag to banish any dry spots inbetween shows – plus, it’s great for faking a dewy complexion pre-party (just press the palms of your hands gently onto your face as a final touch). Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream intensive daily moisturiser, £28 £25.20, available at Debenhams. From pre-party to post, I never leave the house without YSL’s Touche Eclat – it hides all signs of the night before’s bash (because though I might be feeling the effects of two hours sleep and too much champagne, nobody else need know!). Yves Saint Laurent Touche Eclat, £24.50 £22.05, available at Debenhams. When my skin’s looking lack-luster and lifeless after a long day of shows, I swear by […]

Highlights from High Street Fashion Week, pt 2

This is a guest post by Daisy Jeffery, one of our (frankly brilliant) competition winners. In her first-rate role as fashion reporter, Daisy’s been hitting London’s Oxford Street every day this week to sample the best of High Street Fashion Week and all the fun it’s offered. Find out how she fared as an adopted MFL girl when she took on the task this week… While Charlie may have won the golden ticket to Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory, I struck fashion gold when discovering My Fashion Life would be sending me all over London to cover High Street Fashion Week.

Where we went on FNO: the high street

This is a guest post by Lois Mills, one of our (frankly brilliant) competition winners. Last night we sent her on a special mission to sift out the sweetest soirees taking place on the high street at Fashion’s Night Out – and not one to turn down a challenge, she triumphed in her task. Here, Lois shares her experiences on her very first Fashion’s Night Out… The night everyone has been talking about has arrived: Vogue’s Fashion’s Night Out. You know that you can only expect greatness when three of the best words in the dictionary are used all in the same title (and in case you’re having a little difficulty choosing which three words I mean, let’s just say I’m not a fan of the ‘out’doors!). Having caught a little of what happened at last year’s events, and having spoken to Daisy (the other competition winner) about what to wear, I was giving my outfit choice some serious consideration. In the end I went for a very Seventiess vibe, with high-waist purple velvet trousers, a green vintage vest and a studded black belt; topped off with a retro pair of glasses and a black wedge-and-sock combo for my feet! On the train, I was busily taking advantage of the VFNO app; discovering what was going on in every store whilst viciously scribbling them down, trying to be strategic and rank them in order of importance and closeness to one another. A few minutes later, and my list was longer than Oxford Street itself – tonight was going to be hectic! For me, the night began in John Lewis – there were three fashion shows running over the course of the evening, and Mischa Barton was present at one of them. Fingers crossed. I was at the first show, and […]
