Victoria Beckham wears Victoria Beckham to royal wedding

As predicted, Victoria Beckham wore one of her own designs to the biggest event of the century, opting for a modified slash neck navy dress from her AW11 collection with a floating draped hem at the royal wedding today. Naturally, it skimmed her bump beautifully and looked super slick against her black Christian Louboutin Daffodil pumps and Philip Treacy hat, placed expertly in the centre of her forehead with twig-like twizzles. Of course, she had a better accessory than most – David Beckham – who looked suitably dapper in a Ralph Lauren Purple Label bespoke suit with black crocodile braces and a top hat. Very suave, though apparently he wore his OBE medal on the wrong lapel. You can’t win them all, eh?

Do you remember?: the clog

Ever look back and wonder why you wore that? So do we. This week we’re casting our minds back to the trends we wish we’d never laid eyes on, the one hit wonders we wish we’d never worn, and the ones we’re well-rid of. Only if you live in Holland and have grown accustom to these hideous wooden items of footwear are you forgiven for favouring the dreaded clog. As for the rest of us, there was no excuse for the unwelcomed return of this awful backless shoe last spring – which made way for a rather unwelcomed fashion trend we’d soon forget. Other than the Seventies, there was a brief spell in the mid-Nineties when clogs suddenly became fashionable again, so this in itself should suggest some things are better left well alone – absence definitely doesn’t make the heart grow fonder for these little mules. But where Parisian fashion giants Chanel are concerned, the clog was the perfect footwear frame for last year’s SS11 collection, with nearly every outfit finished off with a pair of these ankle breaking disasters. Not only are they difficult to walk in, you’re guaranteed almost certain injury with every step you take – but hey, who cares, right? A broken ankle here, a twisted foot there, it’s all in the name of fashion, dahling! Yeah right. These were by far the worst comeback disaster of last year (especially after the high street did them to death) – and one we won’t be reliving anytime soon.

Kirsten Dunst in Valentino

Whilst attending the New York Premiere of All Good Things last week at the SVA Theatre, Kirsten Dunst wore a lacy Valentino cocktail dress – fool-proof, you may think, but trust us when we say it sounds better than it looked. The dress itself is undeniably gorgeous, but its true beauty seems somewhat lost on Kirsten – perhaps it’s the odd looking training bra she chose to wear underneath… Or maybe it’s more to do with the abundance of elegant lace that overpowers the young actress and her tiny frame, and the too-dark opaques – it just goes to show that not everyone can carry off Valentino. Sorry Kirsten, but we liked your shoes, at least.

MFL does my-wardrobe: D&G daisy blouse

We know you probably missed our ‘MFL does…’ series last week, but don’t worry, we’re back with a bang. And a different sort of bang to what you’re used to, because this week we’ve taken a break from our beloved handbags and have tested some ready-to-wear. Not just any old RTW, either – a piece from D&G’s new collection, no less. Well, we don’t do things by half. We’ve had our eye on the Italian label’s silk daisy pussy bow blouse since it landed on my-wardrobe.com’s virtual shelves, so I won’t bore you with how excited I was to test the little beauty out. All I will say is that I also happen to have a slight obsession with shirts lately, so go figure. Firstly, let’s look at the fabric: 100% silk – when D&G do silk, they don’t mess around with mixes. I’m rather tempted to do a Marks and Spencer style, ‘this isn’t any silk shirt, this is a 100% silk, no holds barred, super-soft D&G silk shirt’ but I think I’ll lose a few of you on that one. Oh, looks like I just did. Whoops. But back to business, this blouse is super-soft and has a luxe light-weight touch that I’ve yet to experience from a similar versions – what that says about my current state of wardrobe, you tell me. Moving onto the cut and that’s beautiful too, as you’d expect from a brand like D&G. Considering it’s a size smaller than I’d usually buy, I was especially impressed by its fit – sculpted around the chest but not quite snug, nipped in at the waist but not noticeably so and slightly puffed at the shoulders to balance proportions. In other words, extremely flattering. A special mention here goes to the sleeves – anyone who […]

Oscars 2010: the dresses

Last night’s 82nd Academy Awards were full of memorable moments. Not only did The Hurt Locker pip the box-office smash Avatar to the post on more than one occasion, but Neil Patrick Harris (a.k.a. Doogie Howser) opened the event with a camp and surreal musical display of sequins and feathers and Ben Stiller dressed up as a Na’vi. Yep, he had the tail and everything. But before the ceremony began, we took a look at the red carpet to have a nosey at the stars to see what they were saying about their films… and more importantly, who dressed them. Here’s a few of the lovely ladies and the gowns they chose for 2010’s Oscars. Elizabeth Banks – Versace One of the best dressed of the night was Elizabeth banks who had previously hosted Oscar’s Scientific and Technical Awards the night before. Dressed in a risky grey Versace gown, Banks opted for a thin hairband with her up ‘do and peach-coloured eye shadow. Sandra Bullock – Marchesa Best Actress winner, Sandra Bullock looked every inch the Hollywood star in this glamourous number from Marchesa. It’s a bit too metallic for our liking but the hair and makeup round off the classic look perfectly. Carey Mulligan – Prada Brit newcomer Carey Mulligan has had some great red carpet moments recently and this one might just be her best yet. The black number from Prada features a flattering sweetheart neckline with a box pleat skirt that could have so easily ended in disaster. We couldn’t see closely enough but apparently, the dress is embellished with Swarovski flowers and knife, fork and scissor charms! Amanda Seyfried – Armani Prive We can’t help but think this Armani Prive drowned Amanda Seyfried. It also probably didn’t help that J Lo was wearing a fairly similar […]

Fight Cervical Cancer in Style

Last night, some of the biggest names in fashion and music joined hands to hold a star-studded extravaganza for Fight Cervical Cancer in Style, a national campaign which helps to raise awareness about the disease and teach women how to reduce their risk. In case you don’t already know, this week is European Cervical Cancer Prevention Week, and getting London’s ball rolling is PM’s wife Sarah Brown, whose charity Wellbeing of Women, alongside Jo’s Trust, is backing the campaign. We popped down to Camden’s Koko nightclub to take a peek at the pop-performances on offer and feast our eyes on some fabulous fashion from London-cool label PPQ, who put on a colourful catwalk comprising their favourite looks for spring. So as models strutted their stuff in this season’s hottest looks and some of Britain’s biggest chart-toppers belted out their hottest hits, our focus turned to what they were wearing , we’re fighting in style, after all. From the ever-quirky Paloma Faith who wore a glittery red ‘P’ hat with matching heart balloons tied to her wrist, to Pixie Lott in a classic LBD, La Roux in a matching top and bottom 80s-inspired ensemble by Basso and Brooke, and the Sugababes who barely wore a thing, their styles were worlds apart. But one thing linked them together: these pop princesses, alongside our hosts for the evening Lauren Laverne and Miquita Oliver, are raising awareness of cervical cancer and helping to educate young women about the disease, which kills three women everyday in the UK alone. “We’re delighted with the amount of celebrity support that has been forthcoming for this important campaign, Robert Music, Director of Jo’s Trust, says. “Cervical cancer can be a devastating disease and may not have any symptoms until it is quite advanced, so it’s essential that girls […]

Katy Perry is so totally Clueless

Katy Perry’s fashion sense is inspired by ‘Clueless’. The ‘I Kissed A Girl’ singer loves the look Alicia Silverstone sported in the 90s comedy movie, in which she played airhead matchmaker Cher Horowitz, which included knee-high socks, cardigans in pastel shades, belly tops and mini-kilts. Katy explained: “‘Clueless’ was a fabulous inspiration to me in the 90s! So were Shirley Manson, a young Gwen Stefani, Madonna and Courtney Love. Now I idolise Dita Von Teese, Agyness Deyn, Bjork, Natalia Vodianova, and always Lolita.” The 24 year old singer is famed for her outrageous style both on and off the stage – she wore a black and pink Hello Kitty corset and black PVC leggings to this year’s BRIT Awards in London – but refuses to tone down her look.

My Daily Style, a street style blog with class, is the brainchild of Spanish beauty Mireia. With her razor sharp sense of style and picture-perfect features, this fashion blogger is a sure-fire stylesetter in the making –and is This morning, you woke up: Like everyday, wearing a band’s T-shirt. How would you describe your style? That’s the most difficult question to answer… I love being feminine, I only wear clothes that fit me. I cannot undestand trends that make the woman look ugly. Always with some rocking accesories! I hate overdressed outfits; that’s what I always try to look simple.

Interview with Fashion Blogger Arabelle from Fashion Pirates

Fashion Pirates brings you daily doses of pioneering style. We at MFL like to think of Arabelle as a fashion DJ blending all the best fashion cuts with hip new designers, her own fabulous outfits, street style looks and more. We are officially addicted! This morning, you woke up: To Yann Tierson’s soundtrack to Amelie, as usual, and my denim shorts I’ve worn religiously since summer started. How would you describe your style? Lazy eclectic. I wear pretty much exclusively vintage, not because I love it more than everything else (I mean, I’d fight over Comme des Garcons any day of the week) but basically because it’s easy to get and cheap for me. It’s got what I like: texture, history, shiny distractions. I don’t have to think too much about what I wear everyday.

Cannes: Penelope Cruz dazzles in Marchesa

We’ve been missing the gorgeous Penelope Cruz due to a bout of flu and food poisoning. But she made up for her absence by making a striking appearance in a lilac Marchesa gown. Penelope was out for the premiere of her film ‘Broken Embraces’. It’s great to see her in colour, as at recent red carpet events she’s opted for black. It’s also fantastic to see her in a figure enhancing dress. It’s an incredibly girly gown but I love how she’s chosen simple jewellery to let the dress do the talking. The Grecian style is always a winner and she exudes femininity.

The ultimate Sex and the City shoe

I don’t know about you, but Carrie Bradshaw does tend to annoy me somewhat. Every sentence born out of her keyboard seems to begin with: ‘I couldn’t help but wonder’ or ‘I got to thinking’; she loves the melodrama a little too much, and she chose Big over Aiden! What was that about? I know, I know, it’s not the real world – I should really get a hold of myself. But the fact of the matter is, I think I’m using these petty arguments to conceal my true annoyance – Miss Bradshaw’s shoe collection. Correction: one pair of shoes in particular – the “Something Blue” satin pumps from none other, than Manolo Blahnik. Not only does Carrie own these shoes, but she is proposed to with them (I’m sorry to any of you that haven’t yet seen the film… where have you been?). In all fairness, in the moment I would probably prefer a ring, but these on the side would do just fine. Actually, it wasn’t until I saw these shoes in person last weekend at a party, that I realised how striking they really are. The entire room paused (well every female did anyway) to stare in awe as the girl glided in, and I for one could not tear my eyes away. If possible, I even felt a little starstruck. Sad isn’t it? These babies are available at Neiman Marcus for a cool $945. While I was admiring the shoes, I noticed the woman wearing them also had small kink toys attached to her purse. It seemed like an odd accessory, but I guess everyone has their own style. The contrast between the elegant pumps and edgy toy was amusing to me. But hey, you do you! The shoes really are stunning works of art. I […]

Colleen Mcloughlin: The Dress and the Glamour

The celebrity wedding of the year is over, and the photos are out for all us common folk to scrutinise. The dress, the flowers and the ring all go under the magnifying glass. So, what was Colleen’s dress really like and was it all that it was made out to be? I purchased the new OK! magazine this week to find out for myself. Now, it’s a bit difficult to express my opinion on her dress as Colleen actually wore two different wedding dresses on the day, but I’ll do my best…

Victoria Beckham: Less is more!

As Victoria Beckham is carving a new career in the shape of a ‘professional style icon’, why is it that fashion writers and fashionistas alike are still asking why she continually gets it wrong? It’s certainly not the fault of the clothes – there was nothing wrong with the Giambattista Valli dress she sported some weeks ago, or the Louboutins she wears at every photo opportunity. She’s got the figure to carry off almost any style (though the measures she takes to achieve it are somewhat extreme) and she was some steps ahead of the pack with her gamine bob. So what is it about Posh that is working against all the good work? Few took her fashion book That Extra Half and Inchseriously, despite the fact that it was actually penned by esteemed Guardian fashion writer Hadley Freeman, and Grazia continue to critique almost every outfit with savage wit.
