Royal Ascot: Less Katie Price, more Kate Middleton

Royal Ascot. Two words which are met with mixed emotions: dread, fear, excitement and confusion. Royal Ascot is fast approaching, and at best, it’s pretty much just a fun day at the races with our bestest gal pals. We take the day off work, we drink a bit, we laugh a bit, we gamble a bit (naughty!), and we do it all while wearing our nice dresses, sky high heels that get stuck in the grass, and over-the-top hats. It’s all very Sex and the City, and we’re supposed to have a jolly good time. However, Royal Ascot fashion isn’t as simple as a nice dress teamed with some matching accessories though. It’s far more complicated than that. Hence the aforementioned confusion. And as the dress-code for this month’s Royal Ascot is stricter than ever this year, we have a feeling race-goers and official staff alike are going to be dreading it – as it’s just so easy to get it wrong! For many ladies (we’re not naming any names or pointing the finger at any particular counties) the notion of dressing up actually means quite the opposite. Dressing down. Or dressing not-at-all. The more big and glam the event, the more skin some ladies think has to be shown, which is one of the main problems the Royal Ascot faced before the ultra-strict dress code was implemented. Apart from the occasional wedding and lavish cocktail Christmas party, most British ladies don’t really get the chance to properly dress up, which is probably why so many of us get it wrong. The only thing we regularly dress up for is a night on the tiles at the weekend, and we all know that “less is more” is the unanimous clubwear mantra. Great for clubbing while on the pull, not so […]

Bargain hunting at Westfield Stratford

While some people might have blown their Christmas money in the Boxing Day sales, others (yours truly included) have waited rather patiently for their chance to snap up a bargain. I worried that waiting for the new year to hit might be a bit late to get a good deal in the shops as everything would be sold out, but I was pleasantly surprised with what I found at Westfield Stratford. I went to the huge shopping centre with a £50 gift card and a mission… a mission to nab a bargain and get some killer wardrobe additions! I was quite sensible and did some window shopping first, and although I found some great bargains in Topshop, Forever 21 and Zara, I actually splashed all my cash in River Island. I’ve been after some statement add-on pieces for a while now, and found the grey lace blazer I had been lusting after as soon as I walked in the shop – it was in my size and was the last one left… practically sitting there waiting for me. £20 reduced from £35 – good start! I was also on a personal mission to find something attention-grabbing for London Fashion Week, and saw a glistening metllic blazer casually strewn across the shop floor. I tried it on, fell in love and the rest is history – I am a magpie at heart! The blazer only set me back £30 – I have no idea how much it actually cost as it had no tag, but I reckon it’s quite the bargain by River Island standards, especially considering how intricate and gorgeous it is.(Ps: please excuse the naff posing and terrible iPhone pics!) The best thing about my bargain-hunting mission was that I didn’t even have to fumble around for the right […]

Wardrobe inspiration! Three ways to wear Resort 2013

Every fash bod worth their Manolo’s is well-versed in the beautifying ways of the Resort (also known as ‘cruise’) collections. The go-between offerings from major design houses to fill the wardrobe void between fashion months; once you tire of your a/w wares, resort will rescue you until spring/summer ’13 lands in stores. For those not accustomed with the over-spilling fashion calendar, resort collections land in stores (and online) around November, and offer pieces with a summery inclination – ‘cruise’ usually referred to the winter vacay-ing ways of the jet-setters, many of whom often hopped on a private jet to go and bask in the Mustique sun rather than slog it out in sleety Sloane Square. But with time, resort has turned into a teaser for next season, and judging by the latest resort 2013 drops at go-to shopping destination Matches, juicy prints, monochrome and lashings of bold colour will continue to entice. Whether you’re spending Christmas in foggy Dublin or baking Dubai, there’s nothing to stop you rocking resort’s fabulous fashions. Here are our top three resort looks for different occasions. Party  Off to a wedding in the Turks and Caicos Islands? Don’t leave the miserable skies of Blighty behind without packing this multicoloured floral dress in your suitcase. Up the glam ante further by adding a statement necklace to compensate for the strapless style and finish off with a matching clutch. Winter sun break  If you’re lucky enough to be dancing at a Goan beach party this Christmas or New Year whilst the rest of the nation sits tight in thermals, then do so in style! We love this alternative cover-up to the traditional kaftan; perfect for popping over a black bikini for a real print pop. No winter vacation would be complete without a pair of desirable flat sandals, […]

Top must have fashion items for Xmas this year

[noskim] Looking good at Christmas can be seen as a very important aspect for most people; wanting the nicest winter clothing for all of those parties over the Christmas period, and brand new outfits to wear when the New Year arrives. As soon as that cold, bitter air arrives what else is needed more than comfortable and warm, yet fashionable clothes to wear. As it’s Christmas, rocking up to a glam event in a nude top or dress that’s adorned with sparkles and embellishment would make you stand out in all the right ways, as would donning a plain nude dress or top-and-trouser-combo and accessorising to your heart’s content with brighter accessories.  The possibilities are virtually endless when it comes to the nude trend which is why we are all over it this festive season. Our top 5 picks from the Kardashian Kollection for Dorothy Perkins

As you may well know, the Kardashian Kollection for Dorothy Perkins is now right out in selected DP stores and on the website. We were quite impressed with what Kim Kardashian and sisters Khloe and Kourtney cooked up, and found ourselves quite overwhelmed with choice when it came down to choosing what pieces to buy. We decided to make it a bit easier for you just in case you found yourselves in the same boat, and selected five of our ultimate favourite pieces from the collection. Feel free to use our selections as a rough shopping guide, and let us know what you bought from the collection. 1. Kardashian black mesh dress Everyone needs a little black dress in their wardrobes  – we all know how much Kim Kardashian loves and swears by  them – and this is the perfect little number. Classic, figure-hugging, with a bit of a twist on the old favourite with the mesh polka dot inserts and shoulder pads.  Kardashian green collar blouse There are a few other similar blouses to this in the collection, but this one stands out a mile for all the right reasons. It’s always nice to mix it up a bit, and it’s a great colour for the upcoming festive season. Great to wear casually with leggings, or tucked into a high-waisted skirt or trousers for a more chic and elegant look. 3. Kardashian gold sequin jacket A jacket is the ultimate last-minute style addition that instantly vamps up an outfit. It can make an outfit smart, sexy, or just add some much needed sparkle to it – and this jacket does all three. Wear on a night out to keep out the chill, wear it to the office on Monday morning to brighten the place and your mood, and wear […]

3 MUST HAVE shoes for the new season!

Autumn/winter ’12 brought with it a sumptuous collection of shoes, many of which steered clear of the ‘high fashion’ (read: unwearable) label, and quickly became our new season must-haves as we saw them stride along the catwalks back in February. Sexed-up platform Mary Janes; loafers ranging from patent to pretty heavily studded and trusty ankle boots with off kilter detailing all caught our eye and here’s how you should be shopping for them this season. If you’re after a season-appropriate shoedrobe but always run back to ‘safety net’ designs because you can’t bear to splash the cash on one wear ‘It’ designs, check out our three key new season shoe picks! The Ankle Boot Where: Burberry Prorsum, Acne, Mulberry Why: The ankle boot is a trusty winter staple, and for the new season it’s been sexed up with various embellishments. Perfect for pairing with a pencil skirt and soft knit for work or equally stylish worn with leather trousers and a slouchy t-shirt for off-duty cool; we love the tough luxe feel the silver chain detailing brings to these McQ brogued boots. What: McQ Brogued Boot, £425, available at Kurt Geiger The Season-hopping Slipper Where: Emporio Armani, Carven, 3.1 Phillip Lim Why: The slipper isn’t a slippery trend (pun intended), in fact it’s here to stay for good as a wardrobe staple we have all come to love (especially our feet!). If you’re looking for an alternative to the now common round toe slipper, opt for a simple pointed version with standout detail. What: MJ Navy Gem Slippers, £32, available at Topshop The Brocade Party Heel Where: Dolce & Gabbana, Jason Wu, Oscar de la Renta Why: Heavy, opulent brocade is a new season favourite and spread from the clothes onto footwear for autumn/winter ’12. Metallic accents are perfect for livening up a […]

Reese Witherspoon in Theory

Braving the rain to do some last minute shopping in Los Angeles on Saturday, actress Reese Witherspoon was spotted wearing a weather-appropriate jacket by Theory as she browsed the windows. The Swagger dark check mac suited her pared-down look to perfection, and with black riding boots and blue skinny jeans to match – plus a splash of festive colour from her red scarf – Ms. Witherspoon certainly knows how to work the laid back Christmas shopper look. And without an ounce of make-up on her au naturale face, the flawless Avon ambassador certainly proved that less is more. If only we could look that fresh faced in the rain…

Golden Globes 2010: the dresses

So, in case you hadn’t heard, it RAINED at the Golden Globes and, hold the phone , some A listers even held their own umbrellas. Now, as big as that news was , we were more concerned with the award winners, Ricky Gervais’ presenting job and of course, the dresses. See below for a pick of red carpet hits – alongside the occasional miss… Olivia Wilde – Gucci The House star and former OC actress went for the glamour vamp look for the red carpet, noting that her Gucci gown would be sold off at auction. Proceeds will be going towards the support efforts in Haiti. Julianne Moore – Balenciaga We love Julianne Moore but this Balenciaga gown just doesn’t seem to sit right and has ended up looking a little unflattering. Still, she got to spend the night with Tom Ford as her date so she gets extra fashion credit for that one! January Jones – Lanvin It might be black but there is nothing boring about the Mad Men star’s full length Lanvin ensemble. The actress added a bit of prom night glamour with a matching satin headband and Brian Atwood platforms. Jennifer Morrison – Luis Antonio Major congratulations to Jennifer Morrison who has nabbed a boyfriend that can go out and do her clothes shopping, successfully. The House star proudly told the red carpet that she received this textured number from Puerto Rican designer, Luis Antonio for Christmas. We bet she was one of a few wearing something from their own wardrobe! Kristen Bell – Jasmine di Milo We can’t understand why Kristen Bell told the world she wore a shorter dress to the ceremony because she needed to ‘to be able to move like a tiger’ but we’ll let it pass because this Jasmine di Milo […]

Winter Sun Beach Chic

In preparation for my own escape to the sun this winter I have been searching London high and low in pursuit of the perfect holiday wardrobe – no mean feat whilst still in the depths of winter. Ever the fashionista I am, taking inspiration from the Spring/Summer 07 catwalks, coveting neon brights teamed with creamy caramels a-la-Christopher Kane, whilst shimmery pale gold and light-as-air chiffons will come into their own with a golden tan. Braving the changing room after a Christmas season of serious indulgence is never a pleasant task, so the shopping destinations need to be all the more special to ease the struggle. For pure ambiance and experience, I head to Notting Hill, where my favourites are top-end boutiques Heidi Klein and Pistol Panties. Pistol Panties bikinis never fail to make you feel and look like a fifties starlet , concealing and revealing in all the right places. The appropriately named ‘Kate’ style is top of my wishlist – the sparkly gold is very Princess Leia, especially when teamed with a Melissa Odabash kaftan from Heidi Klein. This one-stop holiday shop’s style is more pared-down beach chic, but the experience is no less spoiling.
