Rate or Slate: Demi Lovato, Mischa Barton and Britney Spears

This week’s Rate or Slate is somewhat ironic if you think about what two of the girls under our style microscope are actually up to right now. First, we have Demi Lovato, who as a new X Factor USA mentor will be used to passing judgment on others by now, but the roles are reversed for today. She wore a bright orange Topshop dress and leather jacket, which she teamed with some sky-high boots and a rather interesting hairdo. Next up is Mischa Barton (but she’ll always be Marissa Cooper to us), who turned up to an Aston Martin event in a white Temperley London gown teamed with some bulky tan coloured shoes. Finally, we have Miss Britney Spears, who decided to wear yet another Herve Leger dress to the X Factor USA auditions. What did everyone make of their looks, you ask? Let’s find out: Amy of Wolf Whistle says: Demi: ‘I can’t think of anything vitriolic or especially gushing to say about Demi here. She’s wearing Topshop, the coral looks nice against her gorgeous skin, I like her cool retro hair. It’s a bit girl-next-door-in-expensive-shoes but she looks genuinely great. Well played, Demi, you cutie/how boring for me.’ Mischa: ‘Oh, Mischa Barton. It’s true that I derive great joy out of disliking you but seriously: you are SO ANNOYING in the most limp way ever. Mischa is like the human equivalent of a dying flower. Today she’s a wilting lily, jilted at the altar because she was wearing shoes the colour of hotdog relish. Run, groom, run!’ Britney: ‘I’m pretty sure that Britney Spears has posed for photos before so I’m not sure why she’s standing like her mum is taking a proud snap before her first day of school. I wore a school uniform and Britney is […]

Five minutes with….Lora Nikolaev of GENE

Launched in 2009, luxury womenswear label GENE is already stocked in several countries across the globe, including London, Moscow, New York, Paris, Israel and Eastern Europe. The brainchild of former model and Max Factor’s Chief Make-Up Artist, Lora Nikolaev, GENE prides itself on a minimalist approach to design, with the use of luxe fabrics and a tailored aesthetic. Launched in the UK last month, the GENE  Contradiction Collection for spring/summer 2012 brings together a sophisticated palette of black, white, petroleum green and navy on cashmere and silk. My Fashion Life caught up with Lora to talks career switching, the best shopping destinations and, of course, fashion… Describe your typical working day When I am in Sofia, I am in the showroom by 10am the latest. The day usually starts with my assistant and technician and a small brief of the designs we are currently working on. Drawing, emailing, talking on the phone, or just picking up some new fabrics and approving new styles fills the rest of the day. When I’m in London it’s an 8 am start, and the day is full of meetings and shopping straight through till 8pm! What are your wardrobe staple pieces? A black Alexander McQueen dress, Lanvin twisted black and white silk dress, GENE St Lauren jacket in white, GENE IOKO silk pants, Gene black silk playsuit with open back and a good pair of jeans. I wish I’d invented jeans! The best destination for shopping is… London –  the place for everything! After having two successful careers – one as model, the other as Max Factor’s chief makeup artist – what made you decide on a career in design? I believe my choice to be a fashion person and creative director of GENE was far beyond a personal choice; I find it more of a […]

Paris Fashion Week: Day 8

Who needs nail art or even vajazzles when you can have eyebrow bling! Karl Lagerfeld sent his top models (the likes of which included Miranda Kerr, Cara Delevingne and Joan Smalls) down the Chanel runway with the sparkliest, jazzed-up eyebrows we think we’ve ever seen! We are firm believers in the “sparklier, the better” mantra, which is why we are lusting after Chanel’s autumn/winter 2012 collection even more than we predicted. Plus, the Superman-esque crystals that adorned the Grand Palais were genius!

Katy Perry: An emotional, post-Russell transformation

Many of us can sympathise with the excruciating emotional pain Katy Perry has endured in the past few weeks. A messy divorce; unashamedly womanising ex-husband who deems it perfectly fine to return to his waywardly amorous ways so soon after playing the ’Love’ game, and a hugely successful music career are really not the easiest to balance. But Katy has managed to project a steely persona; one that gives nothing away but beneath the surface, a storm is brewing. Her nearest and dearest have come to her rescue, encouraging her to see other men post- Russell Brand, and even Elton John dedicated a ‘singles table’ to Katy and a whole host of other love-starved stars. But who better to understand what Katy is going through than Rihanna; whom Katy is a success replica of and, Rihanna, too has tasted the sour fruits of a tumultuous, ill-fated relationship with violent ex Chris Brown. Although the best pals’ circumstances vary greatly, there is an eerie coincidence between their post break-up appearances and behaviour. After splitting from Chris Brown, Rihanna adopted a harsher, angrier and darker tone, which was evident through the music she produced. Rated R was her fourth album, and her first after her horrific ordeal; featuring tracks such as Te Amo, Hard and the deeply dark Russian Roulette. Similarly, Katy Perry revealed in her latest interview with Interview magazine ‘my music is about to get real f****** dark, so . . .’ which hints towards following in the footsteps of best celeb friend, RiRi. Photographed for Interview in a sexy studded, sequinned bra, long, black gloves and chandelier earrings, and surrounded by a host of burlesque dancers in very little; Katy is unrecognisable in this new, smokier guise. Her outfits, although already eccentric, are turning raunchier and slightly more rebellious, […]

Monday Musings: The things rattling our fashion brains on the hardest day of the week

The things were mulling over this morning at My Fashion Life HQ…. Hedi Slimane to  replace Stefano Pilati at YSL It’s the classic will he, won’t he situation, and annoyingly took over this fashion weekend in Milan. It’s the fashion we’re here for, not the design house politics! Suzy Menkes put forward a thoroughly exciting piece on the current situation surrounding designer dismissals and admissions; although, we must say how super sad we were to see the uber-talented Raf Simons wave a teary goodbye during his final bow at the Jil Sander show on Saturday. Rigorous reporting Oscars – THE OUTFITS! Yes, you guessed it. Forget who won what, its more who wore what! We can’t wait to read the opinion outpour on who chose to destroy their chances of a sartorial trophy, and who naturally won, again. We’ll be a part of that outpour, too. More of Lupo the royal pup – limelight stealer! Finally, we have someone else upping Kate Middleton in the camera hogging stakes, as the royal couple’s adorable four-month-old cocker spaniel had his first outing in Kensington Gardens, last week. We’re a nation of pet-lovers, as well as obsessive Kate-Mid fanatics, so we’d rather see more of the pair, together, obviously. As per Kate’s usual website crashing antics post public appearance, we suspect a hike in Lupo named pets. We’re hyperventilating over the Marni x H&M lookbook – complete with prices! Prints galore and at price tags we just can’t argue with. If high fashion could fall straight from the catwalk, then the Marni x H&M collection is it. The new look book featuring the entire collection complete with prices is a dream. Coming true on March 8. Paris Fashion Week. That is all. The last day of an opulent Milan Fashion Week is upon us today, […]

Best Dressed of the Week: Cheryl Cole at the Prince’s Trust’s Invest In Futures Gala

This week’ BDOTW sees us go back to red carpet style rulebook basics with a classic beauty. Cheryl Cole was out in Grecian goddess form at a Prince’s Trust Invest In Futures gala dinner at The Savoy London, on Thursday night. Looking a heavenly sight in a white, draped Grecian dress, Cheryl was back to her beautiful X Factor style heyday we’ve become so accustomed with. Putting herself forward, to the delight of many, for auction – the prize: afternoon tea for four with the Geordie beauty, valued at £30,000– Cheryl left Prince Charles in a star-struck state as he later thanked her for making an appearance and becoming an auction prize. (We bet he was pleased!) Accessorising with statement crystal drop earrings, pop-colour nails and a simple black clutch, Cheryl lived up to her label of the ‘nation’s sweetheart’, for sure. Opting to cinch the flowing dress at the waist using a black belt; Cheryl added evening glamour with a side swept low-do, her trademark strong eyes and a subdued lip. Evening glamour with a regal touch perfected, we say.

Jameela Jamil joins the Versace for H&M brigade

Geez, the celebs are really loving Versace for H&M at the minute! Last week we reported that Kelly Rowland had worn a leather jacket from the collection to X Factor rehearsals and that very same jacket was recently spotted on Jameela Jamil. The T4 presenter turned up to DJ at InStyle magazine’s 10th anniversary party. We have to say, we loved the jacket on Kelly but Jameela showed how it can look equally as good dressed up for the evening. Jameela is a self proclaimed Topshop aficionado and her gorgeous purple velvet mini dress certainly ticks all the right boxes. She opted for bare legs and ankle boots, which seems to be a T4 presenter uniform – yes we’re talking to you too, Alexa! Her wine coloured boots were also Topshop and coordinated well with the outfit, and her trademark bowler hat finished the look with a quirky twist. Love! For dressing top to toe in high street and looking fantastic with it, we give a big thumbs up to Jameela! [poll id=”246″]

Kelly Rowland shows off her Versace for H&M

When Versace for H&M launched last week, various stampedes around the world ensued. There were brawls over studded bags, scraps over floral dresses and relentless arguments over printed bomber jackets. People queued hours before to get their hands on a single piece and the whole collection sold out in record timing. But somehow, we suspect Kelly Rowland wasn’t in the mile-long scrum on Oxford Street. Being an A-lister certainly has its advantages; one of which is being able to bag yourself must-have items with minimal effort, and we completely love Kelly’s Versace for H&M leather jacket. It’s buttery soft, cropped finish featuring the iconic Versace logo embossed around the bottom – it’s a modern must-have. Ms. Rowland paired the jacket with a bright pink tee, skinny leather trousers and a fierce pair of black suede ankle boots. The singer’s been working extra hard with her acts this week, given that the X Factor quarter final is this Saturday, so we’re willing to strike a deal, Kel: we’ll vote for your girls if you trade us that jacket. Kelly Rowland rocks the red carpet in Versace

Ok, we confess – we’re totally loving Kelly Rowland at the moment. She’s always been one to watch when it comes to the style stakes, but she’s really brought it down when it comes to her wardrobe for the X Factor. We don’t know about you, but half the time we’re just switching over to see what she’s wearing. So, what do we think about Ms. Rowland’s rather striking Versace dress and Giuseppe Zanotti boots that she wore to the X Factor press launch a couple of weeks ago? For us, it certainly makes a style statement, especially when it comes to the innovatively cut-out back and slash of emerald snakeskin colour. The only thing we’re not so sure on is her boots. Sure, they’re beautiful, but we can’t help feeling something a little more classic would have worked better here. [poll id=”186″]

Lusting after Cheryl Cole’s Swarovski Amazing Blush sunglasses

Unfortunately, Cheryl Cole has had more than her fair share of reasons to hide those doe-eyes behind tinted discs. A failed rekindling of love with a cheating ex-spouse, and being at the receiving end of Simon Cowell’s boot after being replaced on the U.S. X Factor by arch nemesis Nicole Scherzinger, anyone would want to hide! But jetting of across the pond with a bid to turn her life around doesn’t mean she’s fallen off our style radar – even if she is guilty of nation betrayal! Cheryl made quite an entrance as she landed at LAX airport sporting a pair of a Swarovski’s Amazing Blush sunglasses from their fall/winter 2011 Wings of Fantasy collection. Mimicking crystals, the geometric cut frames add a definitive sparkle to a casual look as perfectly demonstrated by Cheryl’s jeans and shearling gilet combo. Also available in brown, black and crystal, the Amazing Blush sunglasses with dusky, graduated lenses perfectly mirror Cheryl’s sense of style: playful with a hint of sophistication. Kanye West, Tinie Tempah and Victoria Beckham are responsible for the meteoric rise of humble sunglasses from an article of necessity in sunnier climes, to something of a style requisite for any occasion, day or night. And if we can look as good as Cheryl, we’re definitely wearing these sunglasses at night. Swarovski Amazing Blush sunglasses, £255.

Marisa Miller does rock chick

Amongst the relentless whisperings of X Factor rumours, this has got to be the most random of all. Victoria’s Secret model Marisa Miller is apparently in the running to host the US version of the talent show. We reckon she’ll definitely get the male vote!  But after we spotted the blonde beauty leaving the MTV studies with her husband yesterday, we realised she may well get our vote, too – in the fashion stakes, at the very least. Wearing second-skin leather trousers, towering heels and a loose black tee, she stood out looking like a sexy rock chick who’s serious about style. Accessorising with long wavy hair and a leather waistcoat, we love her effortlessly edgy ensemble (she certainly looks ready to rival Cheryl in the fashion stakes). We can’t wait to see how this rumour turns out – if Marisa looks this stylish attending a meeting, imagine what her hosting outfits would be like on the show. [poll id=”97″]

Love or Hate: Project D v-neck tulle dress

I have nothing against the whole celebrity designer circuit. Victoria Beckham’s collections get better every season. The Olsen’s Elizabeth and James label is a real breath of fresh air. Even Kate Moss’s collection for Topshop was groundbreaking in its own right. So when a new celeb designer comes along we should surely give them the benefit of the doubt and view their work with an open mind. Step forward Dannii Minogue’s Project D collection. On the whole, her designs with business partner Tabitha Somerset Webb are quite good, apart from this V-neck tulle dress. Dannii, I can forgive the dodgy early singing career, I can forgive the stint on Home and Away, but I cannot forgive this dress. I would feel like a tulle nightmare walking around in this – the metallic gold flowers, shiny cord and black beads just make it too fussy for my liking. In general, I am pro-bows but this one is just too prissy and the high-collar reminds me of Princess Anne on a royal visit. Sorry Dannii, love you on X Factor and you rock those M&S ads, but you would never get me in this dress. Project D v-neck tulle dress, £365, available at Matches. BUY NOW!

Cheryl Cole shimmers in Sass and Bide

If we’re to believe everything we read then Cheryl Cole has been having a tough time of it lately. Allegedly snubbed by Simon Cowell and rejected from the US series of the X Factor, she’s apparently turned into a recluse and has stacked on weight (er, where?). But in the same way she always does, she suddenly reappears looking utterly fabulous and silences everybody. Attending the Prince’s Trust Celebrate Success Awards Thursday evening, Ms Cole wore a camel floor length Sass and Bide gown – the lace detail, the cinched in waist and the sexy thigh-high split made for an ultra girly and glamourous look for the event.  Sometimes Cheryl’s hairstyles and accessories can let her down but we’re loving that she kept it simple with loose, voluminous hair, cut-out grey heels and a printed clutch. If she is down in the dumps at the moment, you’d never know. The girl is glowing! What do you think of Cheryl’s look? Sexy or safe? [poll id=”67″]

Lunchtime buy: David Koma for Topshop halter dress

A few years ago on the X Factor, Cheryl Cole wore a very unusual dress with metal-pipe detailing by new designer David Koma and it made front page news. A few weeks later Beyonce wore his dress to collect a few MTV awards. Since then, he’s become one of London’s hottest tickets, and now, luckily for us, we can have a piece of that attention-grabbing style via his collaboration with Topshop. Amongst four others, Koma has cleverly recreated the dress that first shot him to fame but in a far more wearable way – a simple black bodycon halter dress with statement metal piping. It’s not cheap – at £350 you’ll have to be feeling flush – but every girl needs a staple sexy LBD in their wardrobe. Another hotly-anticipated collaboration from Topshop, it’s bound to sell-out fast – go now before it’s too late! David Koma for Topshop Black Tube Dress, £350, available at Topshop. BUY NOW!

Cheryl Cole in Georges Chakra

Cheryl Cole is undoubtedly a much-loved public figure, what with her charming good looks and adorable Geordie accent and all, but that’s not all we British love to obsess over when it comes to our nation’s sweetheart – her fashion sense has also become a thing of media scrutiny. We have to hand it to Cheryl the SS11Georges Chakra gown she wore on Saturday night’s X Factor was nothing less than breath-taking. The combination of black chiffon, sparkly waist embellishment and daring cleavage all made way for a rather seductive little number – not to mention those thigh high splits. But we have to admit we don’t quite know what Cheryl was thinking when she let her hairstylist get away with producing such a tragic up-do. Looking like a Minnie Mouse who just met Lady Gaga – and not in a cute way – she completely spoilt her look for us. Oh well, there’s always this week to get one up on Danni in the style stakes. Diana Vickers in Camilla Skovgaard

London Fashion Week is the hot topic of the week, and with lots of celebrities being spotted at various shows dotted around, it appears the eyebrow raising outfits aren’t just on the catwalk but at the front row. Diana Vickers stole the limelight at the Fashion Fringe show in Covent Garden, where she wowed the audience with her miniscule strapless dress. And we have to say the digital coral printed design looked absolutely stunning on her. The former X Factor star teamed her revealing outfit with towering Camilla Skovgaard peep toe wedges and kept the colour nude to extend her perfect pins. Keeping everything else bare Diana finished her look with toulsled hair and a touch of bright pink lipstick. And we can’t deny it but Miss Vickers is rocketing sky high on our style radar.

Cheryl Cole in Anya Hindmarch at Cannes

As if we needed another reason to envy Cheryl Cole. The evening box clutch from Anya Hindmarch is a classic in the making, adding instant glam to the simplest of ensembles. Victoria Beckham: world’s most glamorous celebrity?

Is Victoria Beckham the most glamorous girl in town? You bet she is, and it’s not just us saying it, it’s a fact. She’s topped Max Factor’s glamour poll, earning her the rather impressive title of the World’s Most Glamorous Celebrity. And when she wandered back on the streets of London this week, she proved why she pipped the likes of Dannii Minogue and Angelina Jolie to the post. Black ruffle minidress from label-du-jour Isabel Marant? Towering nude platforms? A pair of VB sunglasses? It seems her days in fashion have paid off – oh, Ms. Beckham, you’ve exceeded yourself. “Victoria Beckham has been gracing the fashion pages for years now with her glamorous looks and she has designed her own clothes range,” a spokesperson for Max Factor told InStyle. “She never leaves home without being fully made up and her signature glossy pout has become her calling card.” Frankly, we’d expect nothing less.

Five minutes with model and designer Lisa Butcher

At just 15-years-old, Lisa Butcher started life out as model. After winning British ELLE’s first modelling competition back in 1987, she was dubbed the ‘Face of the 90s’ by royal photographer Norman Parkinson and went on to star in campaigns for major brands including Ralph Lauren, Yves Saint Laurent and Max Factor. Sticking with the fashion theme, Lisa also presented the first series of hit TV show Britain’s Next Top Model and worked alongside Mica Paris on BBC’s What Not To Wear, following the departure of the (rather terrifying) Trinny and Susannah. And now? Well, it seems the British beauty can add a few more strings to her stylish bow, as she is currently a designer and ambassador for tall-fashion specialist, Long Tall Sally. We caught up with Lisa after the launch of Long Tall Sally’s very first National Stand Tall Week to find out more about her involvement with the brand and to see what advice she could give to tall ladies out there who might struggle when it comes to shopping on the high-street. How did your collaboration with Long Tall Sally come about? Long tall Sally approached me after the second series of What Not To Wear. I had heard of the brand before, but felt the collections could be stronger. As it happened, the Bennett Brothers – who turned around Oasis and Phase Eight amongst other brands – had just bought out the business and wanted to create a totally new image for Long Tall Sally, so I jumped at the chance to work with them as they have such great reputations. I asked if I could have a go at designing, and it proved really successful and has just grown from there. Plus, it’s also loads of fun! As a designer and ambassador for Long […]

Steep vs Cheap: Cheryl Cole’s National Television Awards dress

The awards season might have just finished up but that doesn’t mean we’ve stopped searching for ways to mimic the stars’ glamourous red carpet style. In fact, having just come across this bargain buy from Long Tall Sally, we’re now scouring our diaries for an event that enables us to play dress-up for the evening. The full-length, high-street dress echoes the look that Cheryl Cole donned back in January at the National Television Awards. Stepping out in a sophisticated, dove grey gown from designer, Stephane Rolland, the nation’s sweetheart wowed onlookers in a low-cut dress from the French Couturier who became Cole’s (or should we say Tweedy’s?) go-to designer during the X Factor live shows last year. Both dresses – as pictured above – feature a plunging neckline and an embellished and flattering cinched in waist. While Rolland’s dress adds a certain edge with its prominent shoulders, we think we’d rather invest in a classic, unfussy gown that will remain stylish when the power shoulder look is long gone. And the best bit? You don’t have to wear any dodgy, matching cuffs. £75 from Long Tall Sally Stephane Rolland

Five minutes with Make up Artist Nadira V Persaud

With a reputation as one of the industry’s leading make up artists, Nadira V Persaud is recognised for her unique style and her ability to create beautiful, flawless skin. We pick her brain for top tips and practical advice… Nadira, you’ve been working in make up for more than ten years , I’m sure things aren’t the same now as they were when you first began. What has been the biggest change for you, in the way we approach make up? Make up has gone through so many changes and one of the biggest changes is from film to digital and hdtv.  As a make-up artist I have had to adapt my kit and styles to suit these mediums by using Airbrushing and mineral make up.  I am open to change and find it quite a challenge, but my style has always been to keep skin beautiful and enhance natural beauty rather than going against what is already there.   In terms of the beauty industry we haven’t changed much, but technology has and more beauty products have a scientific theory behind them so they just keep getting better and better.  Have things reverted to how they were? Going full circle like fashion does? Indeed! Beauty trends come and go and come back again and that is the exciting part of my job; inspiring new looks from past decades.  I am loving the 90’s nudes come back at the moment, which was distinctly Bobbi Brown’s influence when she launched every possible shade of nude. This season we see many brands capturing soft, sumptuous nudes tapping into her innovation.   Recently beauty trends have moved away from the caked look, and make up is a lot more natural than it used to be. A fresher face can be a lot more beautiful […]
