Whatever we’re in the mood for, really!

Lusting after Topshop’s Unique Pixelated Cleopatra Sweatshirt

Topshop Unique’s S/S 2012 collection might have been met with mixed reviews by the fashion press when released, but there is one lady in particular who is definitely championing the range. You might have heard of her- she’s called Rihanna! As one of MFL’s favourite singers, we were overjoyed to see Ri-Ri in the British label and have been lusting after her Cleopatra sweatshirt ever since.  The boxy jumper featuring a pixelated image of Liz Taylor as Cleopatra, perfectly channels the sportswear trend and is ideal for casual days. The collection has also caught the eye of Lindsay Lohan who wore a longer version of the top in a shoot with Terry Richardson for LOVE magazine. We would pair it now with skinny jeans or maxi skirt a la Rihanna or denim cut-offs when the weather gets warmer. Add a few pieces of chunky gold jewellery and you’ll be walking like an Egyptian in no time! Topshop Unique Pixelated Cleopatra Sweatshirt, £50, available at Topshop.

Rihanna: The latest WAG recruit?

Rihanna is definitely going Hard. Residing in London for the past few days, she’s been a perfect reflection of the celebrity excess we mere mortals can only crave. Excessive partying, eclectic displays of personal style, house hunting in Hoxton and a whole load of inter-star mingling that had Kate Moss nickname the Bajan superstar “honey cups” – Rihanna really has coloured herself in the hue of London life. And, if her recent remark at footballer Emmanuel Adebayor’s 28th birthday bash was anything to go by, then our London hearts are beating so fast, major tube delays combined with out of order tube station escalators couldn’t even come close. While partying with the footie crew – where she turned up as a surprise guest – at London’s Aura nightclub, Rihanna said: “I wanna be a Euro 2012 Wag. This rocks.” Her words struck a chord with our love for fashion – WAG-inspired fashion to put it precisely. No, were not championing traditional WAG gear, but what’s the harm in a little improvisation when it comes to RiRi’s WAG wardrobe? We’d like to add, however, that if Rihanna does decide to embrace London as her home, then we’d want her to do it in her Good Girl Gone Bad guise, because that’s why we’ve really come to love her. For some reason, it seems impossible to imagine RiRi gracing WAG favourite Cricket Boutique anytime soon… But, if she were to fulfill her wish of WAG-dom and bag a footballer while mingling with the London set, here’s a little imagined preview of the staples she’d probably need to sport to really fit the bill….   The tailored, luxe leather jacket to be seen in for those emergency salon trips and the odd/rare grocery shopping trip. Alexander McQueen Laced Leather Jacket, £2,795, My Theresa   The tighter and […]

Five fab snakeskin pieces under £50

Here at MFL, we love all types of animal print; leopard, zebra, tiger, crocodile. You name it, we’ve pretty much tried it. But there is one print that we have special style affection for- snakeskin. There is something really cool and effortless about snakeskin that other prints just can’t touch. Leopard print might look glam on certain occasions but, worn the wrong way and you might just verge into Bet Lynch territory (shudder). Snakeskin on the other hand, is more subtle, more refined and more blasé. We love! Thankfully it is super-hot right now and investing in a piece will see you right through summer. Here are our top five picks which are all, miraculously, under £50. 1.If you haven’t ventured into the style mecca that is Stylist Pick, you need to now. Lunchtime Buy: Topshop Psychic3 Studded Ankle Boots

Topshop’s ankle boots are becoming a thing of legend – they are just so good! Having swooned over the Ambush boots and their incredible resemblance to the famous Acne Pistol boot before, we now turn our attention to the latest member of Topshop’s boot family, the Psychic3 Studded Ankle Boot. Hey there, beautiful! The Psychic3 boot has the same chunky style and feature zips that we loved about the Ambush boot, whilst boasting its own exciting detail. The steel toe cap and studded rear are glitzy hardware that we’re simply obsessed with, referencing the nineties grunge trend that looks set to be huge this season. The tan leather meanwhile is simply lush, whilst the wooden heel is just the right height, elongating our legs perfectly. We’ll wear these now with our skinny jeans, band t-shirts and a chunky coat, until we ditch the coat and swap the jeans for denim cut-off shorts come summertime, when these will be looking simply sweet on festival fields. Rock on! Topshop Psychic3 Studded Ankle Boots, £110, available from Topshop.

So, the wind and rain has finally arrived here in the UK, and after a few weeks of blissfully mild weather, we need a little reminding how to dress appropriately for the elements. This is where Barbour comes in: the South Shields based brand has its roots in designing jackets and macs especially for rainy days a.k.a Typical English Weather. Lunchtime buy: Nicholas Kirkwood Removable Cuff Booties

If there was a God of Shoes, we’re pretty sure he’d take the form of Nicholas Kirkwood. The German-born shoe designer has created footwear for Erdem, Ghost and John Rocha to name a few, and has become known for providing the ultimate statement shoe to complete any outfit. From hanging out with Isabella Blow and Phillip Treacy early in his career, you can see where Kirkwood gained his love of the unusual and extraordinary. His own footwear line carries the same modern aesthetic and has since become a major hit with fashionistas everywhere. Luckily for us, sale season has brought us a little closer to owning our own Kirkwoods, as we’ve spotted these Removable Cuff Booties reduced from £695 to £279 on Mytheresa.com. Not only will these boots complete every outfit from our skinny jeans to our pretty print dresses, but the genius lies in their versatility, with a removable cuff providing almost two styles of boots in one, whilst the geometric cut is pure Kirkwood statement DNA. Beat the blizzard with these super stylish, snow-proof pieces!

The weather outside is frightful – at least it will be come tomorrow. With snow set to blast through much of Britain after nightfall, we have a feeling it’s going to get freezing around here. Thanks, weather man. So let’s cue the annual conundrum: what the hell should one wear to stay warm and stylish in the snow? Are your waterproofs actually keeping the wet out? Will your jeans soak through? Is yetti a step too far? Don’t worry! We’ve hunted down the hottest snow-proof wears that promise to keep you dapper and dry when the frozen stuff falls – and the best part is they’ll work for a whole bundle of other winter weather conditions, too. Take a look through our layers of padded puffas, badass boots and novelty knits (’tis the season, after all) that made the cool cut… Keep cosy in this surprisingly cool quilted ski jacket, complete with fleece lining, faux fur trims and a hood to protect your hair (we know what matters). SNO belted ski jacket, £95, available at Topshop. Do we really need to justify this hilarious sweater? It’s genius, and yes, we’re still giggling. Chalet sweat by Ashish, £55, available at Topshop. Worse than snow? Sludge. Prevent slipping and keep your feet dry with a pair of fool-proof wellies – we love Hunter’s Carnaby snake print versions for a slick touch. Hunter Carnaby Boa snake boot, £150, available at my-wardrobe. Ok, so these skinnies aren’t strictly snow-proof, but their wax coating will help the wet run off (and aren’t they, well, gorgeous?). Lunchtime buy: Topshop Psychic2 studded ankle boots

Topshop has really been delivering in the boot department this season, and this pair are a case in point: meet the Psychic2 studded ankle boots, ladies (also known as The Boot of Dreams!). Let us count the ways that we love this pretty pair… First, there’s the stud detail on the rear of the boot. It’s totally rock and roll and bang on trend for this season – we saw lots of hardware detail mixed with soft leathers on the autumn/winter runways. Then there’s the metal toe feature – shiny and tough, we’re feeling like this is a bit Clint Eastwood in one of those old cowboy movies, but in a very good way. Then, there’s then incredibly flattering shape: cut just above the ankle, these will look sleek with skinny jeans and leg-lengthening when teamed with a short skirt. Perfect! And let’s not forget the chunky three inch heel, either – just the right size. Topshop, thank you for yet another boot-iful pair (oh, come on)! Topshop Psychic2 Studded Ankle Boots, £110, available at Topshop.

Blake Lively brings downtown chic to Manhattan

As her on-screen ego Serena van der Woodsen, we are used to seeing Blake Lively strutting around on set in all manner of Lavin, Chanel and Louboutin. That’s why, when this picture of Blake landed on our desk, we couldn’t believe how dressed down the 24-year-old looked. She looked effortlessly cool as she hung around in New York wearing dark blue skinny jeans, a sparkly red and black striped sweater and hooded leather jacket. It looks like she hung up her heels for the day too, instead opting for a pair of tough looking flat boots. We especially love her ultra glitzy top – who doesn’t love a bit of sparkle in December, after all?! While we’re sure Blake hasn’t retired from her designer threads permanently, it’s good to see her looking so laid-back and stylish. Top marks also for her natural hair and makeup, too. Ah, this New York socialite malarkey looks like a hard life… [poll id=”249″]

Call Pippa Middleton the ice princess…

It’s a conundrum none of us have probably faced. What does an (almost) royal wear to go ice skating? Especially when one is faced by the flash bulbs of a hundred paparazzi. This was exactly what Pippa Middleton must have thought when she attended the A-list ice skating event at Somerset House, presented by Tiffany & Co. Not wanting to blend in with any old riffraff (natch), she chose this beautiful white princess coat complete with oversized buttons and funnel neck. She paired it with a pair of black skinny jeans, probably from J Brand, a favourite label of the Middleton sisters.   And to stop those regal hands catching a chill, she also donned a pair of black leather gloves which coordinated well and gave her outfit an extra chic touch. Add to this a pair of diamond earrings and those signature brunette Middleton waves and you can totally see why the world has fallen in love with Pip’s style. But what do you think of what she wore? Get the look: Rosie Huntington-Whiteley’s hot autumn look

This time of year can sometimes be difficult to dress for – not quite cold enough for full-on winter coats but not warm enough to surpass the woolens. Well would take a look at this: Rosie Huntington-Whiteley was recently pictured on the streets of London wearing this perfectly autumnal ensemble. The sweater is having a major fashion moment at the minute and her striped Joie piece is the perfect blend of slouchy and chic. Rosie paired the sweater with skin-tight dark denim and black suede knee-high wedge boots (which we’re more than a little bit jealous of). We also loved her Seventies-style wide-brimmed floppy hat in that gorgeous plum colour – very Bianca Jagger, non? She finished the look with a classic super-sized black tote which pulled the look together effortlessly. Of course, most of us will never get to be a Burberry muse like Rosie. Or replace Megan Fox in a movie. Or be a London socialite. Bad times, but we can totally steal her look. See how: The focus of this outfit is the striped jumper. Rosie’s gorgeous Joie number will set you back £270, but we’ve found this wonderful mohair version from Topshop for a far more purse-friendly £42. Sweet! Knitted Stripe Mohair Jumper, £42, available at Topshop. When wearing knee high boots it’s important to wear jeans as slim-cut as possible to avoid adding unnecessary bulk. Investing in a good pair will withstand all the wear and tear winter has to throw at them – this wax-coated pair from J Brand is perfect. J Brand waxed skinny jeans, £199, available at Oxygen Boutique. Rosie’s suede wedge boots not only look great, they’re also sturdy and practical on foot. This pair from House of Harlow has a definite touch of the Seventies to them and works wonders […]

Lunchtime buy: Topshop knitted spot mesh jumper

Since summer is now officially over, here in Britain we’re reluctantly accepting that balmy summer evenings are now a thing of the past, so it’s time to start dressing, dare we say it, more appropriately. So now we’re facing an age old dilemma: we want to look glam and gorgeous on an autumn night out, but we’d quite like to be warm and avoid catching that horrible cold that everyone is getting, too. Well, fear not! This Topshop mesh jumper has come to our rescue. Its knitted sleeves will protect and warm during those cold nights out, whilst its spot mesh sweetheart neckline looks subtly sexy for an evening on the tiles. It’ll look great with leather shorts, black tights and very high heels for disco fun, and will look just as cool with skinny jeans and the oldest pair of Converse pumps for daytime chic. Chic Shoegasms: Charlotte Olympia Ninivah leopard pumps

‘Oh my,’ are the words that sprang to mind when I saw these beautiful Charlotte Olympia Ninivah leopard pumps. If ever there was a statement shoe to own for next season, I believe this is it. With a sensual gold leopard overlay, these black platform pumps take the concept of leopard print to a whole new level (as does the silver and red leather detailing on the toe and the crystal-embellished eyes). Can you imagine what these shoes would do to the average pair of black skinny jeans? Good grief, statement style will never have been so easy to work with a pair of these under your belt (or, er, on your feet, as the case may be). And the price? Well, they’re placed at a rather steep (whisper) £669, but when all things are considered, I’d buy them for a grand if it meant I could have mini cats on my feet for the new season. Charlotte Olympia Ninivah Leopard Pumps, £669, available at MyTheresa.

Charlotte Olympia Animal Print Booties: Loving it!

Animal print has been rocking the catwalk for a few seasons now, and these Charlotte Olympia Alice Siamese Animal Print Booties (that was a mouthful) prove why. With their two-tone animal printed calf hair , dark brown leather laces (so delicious they almost look like liquorice) and contrasting black patent heel, these ankle boots will be the perfect way to rock animal print this season and the next (and, well…FOREVER). As ever, Charlotte Olympia has once again provided us with something iconic and edgy that will work whatever height, size or shape you are. They got the thumbs-up from the fash-pack (as well as a certain Miss Olivia Palermo who rocks her own pair with a pair of skinny jeans) and will immediately brighten and quirk up an everyday, plain ensemble. Sound good? They definitely do to me. In fact I’ve already started clearing a space for them in my bulging, over-stuffed wardrobe. The two-tone animal print will see you through the seasons, and so will the classic, old-school brogue style (which is very now). So snake-skin print might be on the horizon for the trends next season, but leopard print will always be around, and after many years, these will be the perfect vintage shoes to past down to your daughter or granddaughter.   Charlotte Olympia Alice Siamese Animal Print Booties, £619, available from mytheresa

Love or Hate: Alexander McQueen Vintage Leather Jacket

What with that wedding dress and the stars climbing over themselves to wear McQueen at the Met Ball last week, the British label is the one everyone wants to be seen in right now – and Sarah Burton’s doing everything in her power to keep it that way. Which brings me on to today’s love or hate item. This pink Alexander McQueen vintage leather jacket is effortlessly cool and will take you from season to season. Firstly, it’s in the hottest colour around right now – pink. Secondly, I love the juxtaposition of having a tough biker jacket made from the prettiest pink leather – a classic McQueen move. The gold side zips and buttons are great little details and the design means it will only look better with age. This jacket looks best with basics – think black skinny jeans or a grey jersey dress – but it’ll work just as well at night, too. It’s a real investment, but there’s no better time to buy your own piece of McQueen than right now.  Alexander McQueen Vintage Leather Jacket, £2,690, available at Matches. BUY NOW!

Pippa Middleton: an emerging style icon

If there’s one way to shoot to success overnight, you can bet it’s being the maid of honour at your sister, the Duchess of Cambridge’s wedding. Before Friday, Pippa Middleton was known as Kate’s lesser-known, slightly-uglier sister, but when she stepped out in her Alexander McQueen gown at the royal wedding, she caused quite the stir. With a rear perter than most – she now has an Ass Appreciation Society on Facebook with over 170,000 fans at time of publishing, by the way – she’s found herself at the forefront of fashion chatter as an emerging style icon, and we, for one, are rather intrigued by her new-found celebrity. Here, we delve into the style of Kate’s younger sister to see what all the fuss is about… Pippa shares her sisters affection for the high street, and stepping out for her very public departure the day after the wedding, she chose a classic royal blue blazer from Zara costing £69.99. It’s reserved and regal, made modern with white skinny jeans, but it’s an appropriate choice for the occasion. Classic and elegant, Pippa’s perhaps a bit more daring in her choice of colour and cut of dress that Kate. For her sister’s reception at Buckingham Palace, she opted for an emerald floor-length silk dress by Temperley with a plunging neckline and embellishment under the bust. A tad risque for the royals, but she totally pulled it off for the evening occasion. If we’re to believe the rumours that emerged before the royal wedding on Friday, Pippa was supposedly rather vocal towards what her bridesmaid dress should be like. While we very much doubt that was the case, it takes a killer figure and serious confidence to pull of a McQueen dress like that (sorry, we couldn’t resist the obligatory bum shot). […]

Love or Hate: Emma Cook jewelled jellyfish cardigan

When I was growing up I spent many a happy summer on holiday in North Wales. I loved the ice creams, charming British beaches and woke up every morning excited about the day ahead. This is apart from one year, when I was about five years old, and was playfully running along the beach with my sister. All of a sudden I felt an almighty pain in my foot. Looking down, it became apparent that I had been stung by a jellyfish. Not the most pleasant experience for a five-year-old; I spent the rest of the holiday avoiding the beach and in a foul mood. This is why I’m not that taken with Emma Cook’s jewelled jellyfish cardigan. I really like Emma Cook and animal appliqués are delightfully quirky, providing the animal is cute – like a rabbit, panda or kitten. But this jellyfish is not cute in any manner. For me, there is nothing attractive about a slimy jelly-like fish with tentacles! Ok, perhaps I am being jellyfish-ist, I mean, they must have feelings too, right? But still, there is no way I would walk around in this. Perhaps jellyfish enthusiasts out there might think this wool cardigan is the bees knees. And if, perchance, they are reading this, I would say rock it in style with skinny jeans or leather shorts. Personally, though, I’ll stick with my Sonia Rykiel jewelled heart cardies. Love or Hate: Christopher Kane galaxy print silk biker jacket

I’m a bit of a geek when it comes to the Universe. I love watching those television programmes on space and fought for a front row seat at a Brian Cox lecture. I always think there is something really dreamy and majestic about images of space. Christopher Kane’s designs are always so unusual. His atomic bomb print tees a few seasons ago were amazing, but his astronomical print even better. This galaxy print silk biker jacket is the highlight of his collection, and a statement piece to say the least. Everything about it is fantastic, from the attached mini skirt to the frilly cuffs. The silver zip details and neat collar are cute little design features, but the print is incredible. With this piece, anybody could be celestially fabulous. The way I see it, this was made to be worn with black – slim-fit trousers, heavy-weight leggings or skinny jeans being the best options. When they start doing those day trips into space, we’ve found our perfect outfit… Christopher Kane galaxy print silk biker jacket with skirt, £1690, available at Browns. BUY NOW!

How to style the ultimate white T-shirt outfit

If you’ve read our review of Wonderbra’s new T-shirt bra, you’ll know that our friends at the lingerie label have also called on us for a spot of style advice. To celebrate the launch of its perfect T-shirt bra, Wonderbra has asked us, and several other bloggers, to style the ultimate white T-shirt outfit. And armed with £100 of Very vouchers and a staple tee, that’s exactly what we did. Below, our editor shows us how she wore hers, and shares her top picks to recreate the look… Firetrap skinny jeans, £52, available at Very.co.uk; white T-shirt, £15, available at Topshop; POP by PPQ cropped jacket, £49.99 £39.99, available at Very.co.uk; Office cork platforms, £18, available at eBay Fashion Outlet; Iosselliani snake ring, £158, available at my-wardrobe; Falke socks, £6.50, available at my-wardrobe; Daisy Jewellery blue Chakra bracelet, £85, available at my-wardrobe. For me, a white T-shirt is a wardrobe staple. A slouchy sister to luxe leather or a fitted friend to loose denim, it’s the probably the most versatile piece I own, but when we’re talking about the ultimate white tee outfit, there’s only one route I can run. A white tee and skinny jeans are a like the jam to my toast – quick, easy and totally tasty. As classic a combination as it is cool, it’s everyday style that doesn’t age. But a laid-back base like this needs a bit of attitude, and for this, accessories are key. A pair of platforms teamed with slinky ankle socks creates a playful, preppy vibe, and a statement ring adds an air of effortless glam. Worried about April showers and a spring breeze? Add a cool cropped trench – it’s a great way to add a contemporary spin on a tried-and-tested formula.

Emma Roberts is chic in Chanel

Emma Roberts isn’t exactly a normal 19-year-old. The Hollywood starlet may be following in her Auntie’s footsteps (that’s Julia Roberts, FYI) in the acting world, but she’s quickly paving her own way as a style icon. Spotted in West Hollywood yesterday, the actress wore skinny jeans with a white t-shirt and expertly finished her outfit off with a classic Chanel jacket and a pair of sky high Christian Louboutin courts. Not exactly low maintenance for a browse round the shops, but she’s certainly making sure she’s one to watch. Still a teenager and she’s wearing Chanel? We’re sure we should mutter something about life not being fair. What do you think of Emma’s look? Cast your votes in our poll below. [poll id=”58″]

Rachel Zoe’s maternity style

Only celeb stylist Rachel Zoe would consider five inch thigh-high boots appropriate maternity wear but gosh, doesn’t she do it well? Attending a Pre-Oscars party in LA last weekend, the mum-to-be wore head-to-toe black.   Since LA is experiencing some of it’s coldest days since the 1940s at the moment (no, we’re not in the least bit smug!), Rachel wrapped up in a huge shaggy fur coat. The outfit underneath was very simple – skinny jeans and a black tunic – but it’s her uber chic accessorising that takes the look from drab to directional. Adding her trademark oversized glasses and a bang on trend Seventies floppy hat, Zoe’s outfit was a far cry from the average Mothercare mum attire. What do you think of Rachel Zoe’s look? Is she a slummy or yummy Mummy? [poll id=”46″]

How to wear it: palazzo pants

Let’s face it, skinny jeans can be a real pain – quite literally, after a big lunch – and whilst paperbag waist trousers are more comfortable, they aren’t always so flattering. Opt to pair them with wooden wedges for a full Seventies throw-back or with towering platforms like these tan pumps by Alexander McQueen. Stella McCartney in Stella McCartney (duh)

There’s only one set of people we like style-stalking more than celebs, and that’s designers. Let’s face it, they design the labels we love and the pieces we lust-after which, in our books, puts them on some sort of proverbial pedal stool. And very few, might we add, give us better sartorial satisfaction than Stella McCartney. A working mum on the go, she nails that everyday luxe look so well that we’ve given up trying. Wearing a black and white flecked cocoon coat over grey skinny jeans, black peep-toe boots and an ever-fab oversized Falabella bag, Stella’s tonal layers are the ultimate in laid-back luxe – and we love the edgy accents that keep a simple look cool. But we want to know your thoughts. Does Stella’s style scream success or do you expect more from Ms. McCartney? Cast your vote below! [poll id=”34″]
