Your Summer Essentials Checklist: The Need Now Edit

Not sure whether you noticed, but we’ve already had our flash-in-the-pan summer this past bank holiday. Temperatures went double- digit on us, as sun-starved Brits flocked to parks, and any other open space we could find where the sun would feed our winter-ravaged complexions. However, now that we’re back to the climatic reality we’re used to living with this side of the pond (wholly unfair), we’re not letting grey skies and constant downpours dampen our spirits (pun intended), and instead drawing up bright and bold summer shopping lists ready for when the sun finally appears again! To make the process of leaving behind the comfort of your winter wardrobe (we know, it’s a sorry state of affairs in May!), we’ve picked out 15 summer essentials every discerning style maven needs in her wardrobe this season. From the eclectically printed short, ideal for pairing with a smart blazer, as it is with a louche tee, to pretty printed jeans and the perfect day-to-night blouse option; our need now edit has all your sartorial wants and needs covered. 7 neon pieces worth being noticed in

Splashed and splices of neon were one of the biggest colour stories to come out of spring/summer 2013. From Erdem’s angelic lace dresses, updated with shots of zingy floral embroidery in neon orange and pink to Simone Rocha’s blinding neon daisies and delectably charged green and blue at Rag & Bone; it was the certified colourway of the new season, and one we’re not shying away from. Although fashion has a habit of repeating embarrassing mistakes from a bygone era, albeit in a slightly more modern, tasteful way, our top neon picks to be noticed don’t include any 80s disco references, or stomach-turning Day-Glo lycra workout gear. From sweeping dresses to look-at-me accessories and shoes so beautifully bright, you’ll need to get out the Ray Bans (in a good way, of course), shop our top seven neon picks below. Sophie Hulme Geometric Shorts, £278, My Wardrobe: The perfect preppy piece for pairing with a crisp shirt and flats.  Neon Animal Print Tunic Dress, £38, Topshop: This dress is guaranteed to become a festival favourite for all discerning fashionistas! Box Clutch with Gems, £25.99, Zara: Packing a punch like no other, we love the tiny price tag and massive impact this clutch will have paired with a simple LBD. Pleated Contrast Panel Skirt, £110, Reiss: The easiest way to incorporate colour into work wear; pair with a soft knit and suede pumps for a chic finish. Diane von Furstenberg Starr Neon Silk-chiffon Dress, £755, Harvey Nichols: We love how smoothly neon takes on a glam, feminine silhouette – red carpet glamour at your fingertips! Markus Lupfer Lips Sequin-Embellished Neon Knitted Sweater, £282, Net-a-Porter: Nothing comes close to the cheer associated with wearing the loudest statement sweater around. Wear this one with skinny jeans and sneakers for ultimate comfort with a quirky touch.  Charlotte Olympia […]

Midweek Moodboard: Denim

You don’t need us to tell you that denim never really goes out of fashion – after all, there’s never a good time to throw our your favourite, trusty pair of jeans, is there? This morning however we’re taking our love of denim to a whole new level; we don’t mean Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake matching double denim level though (we don’t ever want to relive that 2001 sartorial nightmare, no matter how cute they were as a young couple) but we are extending our love of the fabric. If you love your jeans too much to kiss them goodbye, why don’t you try them in a different colour instead of the conventional blue? We found a great peach pair by J Brand – not only is the colour perfect for the spring/summer season, but it now has the royal seal of approval now that Kate Middleton has been spotted out in the shade. Braver fashionistas are encouraged to try a denim dress or denim hotpants on for size – the sun is out, why not?! Skinny jeans, £115, Replay available at USC Peach skinny jeans, £199, J Brand available at Harrods Denim jacket, £95, The Ragged Priest available at Topshop Sleeveless skater dress, £45, available at Oasis Tie front cropped blouse, £18, available at Fashion Union Studded denim shorts, £22.99, available at New Look Blue cut-off shorts, £159, Frame Denim available at Matches

Get Heidi Klum’s luminous look

On duty or off duty, we can always count on supermodel Heidi Klum to turn heads. And it’s not just because she’s wearing a luminous yellow t-shirt… although we think it might play a small part  on this occasion. Quite understandably we wouldn’t say no to looking like the former Victoria’s Secret Angel… and as we’ve finally accepted that we can’t grow an extra seven inches in height, we’ve decided that copying Heidi’s outfit is the best we’re going to get right now. Better than nothing, right? If you want to channel the Klum-ster, simply add a bright highlighter yellow t-shirt to a skinny pair of blue jeans, add a fitted parka and you’re good to go. Beach waves in your hair are optional, but always encouraged. Here’s what you’ll need to get Heidi’s look for yourselves: Skinny jeans, £50, Only available at Zalando Neon blouse, £110, Splendid available at Atterley Road Textile parka, $295, Elizabeth and James available at Madewell

Lunchtime Buy: Converse KA-One Skate trainers

[noskim] Time to put those winter boots at the back of the wardrobe where they belong, as the sun is finally out for us to take advantage of. If you’re not into your embellished gladiator sandals or cute ballerina pumps though, don’t fret, we found the perfect footwear to see you through the slightly warmer months: these Converse KA-One Skate trainers that come in a very eye-catching black and red colour combo! Pretty cool, aren’t they? As you can see, Kenny Anderson’s signature pro-model sneaker is inspired by the classic Converse silhouette, and features High Abrasion Laces and Stitching, a high Density Foam in Tongue and Collar, a moulded heel counter and High Abrasion Suede with Internal Reinforcement among other things. You don’t have to be a skateboarding enthusiast to rock these babies, but you’d definitely be one of the coolest girls on the ramp if you do like to dabble in the sport. Rock them with some unassuming casual shorts when the sun is blaring, of team them with some skinny jeans and a cheeky motif t-shirt for breezier days. These shoes are just as attention-grabbing as they are versatile, so it will definitely be £44.95 well spent if you decide to buy them. And if you’re looking for converse trainers, try Skate Hut first because they have quite the impressive selection. [/noskim]

Five Spring Styles You Need In Your Wardrobe This Season

[noskim] With the bitter chills of winter retreating from the warmth of the oncoming spring sun, it’s time to freshen up your wardrobe with some much needed sunshine and clothes that are much more suitable for the rising temperatures. It’s the perfect opportunity to throw off the shackles of multiple layers and embrace skirts, dresses, tights and shorts – and all the uplifting colours, patterns and designs that come with this season. The high street is filling its shelves with an overwhelming array of fashion trends, and this article picks five all-important styles you’ll want in your wardrobe. 1. Bold Colours This spring, like many others, is all about bright bold colours. Bright pinks, blues, purples and yellows are all making waves this season and giving the usual floral spring patterns a run for their money in the popularity charts. Whether you make a bold statement with one brightly coloured item of clothing, such as a blazer or dress, which punctuates 2. Bright Accessories From bags to makeup, bright colours are everywhere – beyond tops, dresses and skirts. Allowing you to complement the colour blocking in the rest of your outfit, and punctuate other colours with matching schemes, you can complete any spring outfit perfectly with a bright striped or block colour handbag. Seasoned fashion lovers will know that bold, loud bag (or other accessory) can brighten up even the most reserved and muted outfit. Unless you’re colour blocking, if you opt for a loud clutch or handbag then tone down the outfit it’s going with to avoid painful clashes. 3. Panel Skirts & Dresses They certainly might not be new trends for 2013, but panel skirts and dresses are definitely here to stay. With spring getting rid of the need to wrap up and hibernate, now’s the perfect time […]

Lunchtime buy: Erratik lace-up trainers

[noskim] Even though all sports shoes are on the up (because working out has never been more popular – thanks Team GB) it’s the non-practical ones that are flooding the high street with their constant appearance. We don’t mean impractical in the Lady Gaga footwear sense – the world isn’t quite ready for those sky-scrapers just yet – we just mean that fashionistas are opting to pair their skinny jeans, flirty skirts and cute shorts with lace-up trainers instead of the traditional pumps, wedges and even high-heeled stilettos that they previously favoured. This might also have something to do with Brit model-of-the-moment Cara Delevingne, who always opts for comfortable clothing and footwear when she’s off-duty. With that in mind, we urge you to check out these fierce and fabulous studded Erratik lace up trainers from Wildpair.com. If you’re going to buy one thing this lunchtime (as well as your actual lunch and the new issue of Marie Claire obviously) let it be these monochrome beauties. You’ll get a lot of use out of them and can pair them with virtually everything apart from your elegant evening wear. Heck you can even wear them underneath a posh gown if you’re channelling Kristen Stewart. We’re all about the attention to detail, which is why we love the side zip and stud features on these shoes – they only make us love and crave them more! [/noskim]

Opt for comfort in this season’s tough talking ankle boots

[noskim] Want to strut about town in something as fierce as it is comfortable? Enter the trusty ankle boot! A lot edgier than its ballet pump counterpart, the ankle boot is all you need to ease you into the spring/summer season. At least if you’re staying in good old Blighty, anyway. The good thing about our weather is that it’s rarely “too hot” for an ankle boot, which means that you can invest in a pair (or five) today and get an entire season’s wear out of them. More if you’re lucky! Take a look at five of our favourite ankle boots from Miz Mooz – one of our go-to places for totally trendy shoes! 1. Miz Mooz Women’s Lissie Ankle Boot Urban, edgy, stylish – these Miz Mooz boots are all you need to pull off that fierce fashion girl about town look. Plus they make a nice change from the conventional black – perfect for adding a pop of edgy colour into your outfit without going overtly feminine. Great to wear with skinny jeans! 2. Miz Mooz Women’s OHara Ankle Boot Akin to the Lissie ankle boot above, these are perfect for strutting your stuff and making a serious style statement while retaining the utmost comfort at the same time. These babies come in an array of different colours, but there’s something about the red colour we can’t seem to get enough of. (Tip: It’s also one of the hottest shades to appear on the catwalks this Fashion Month – get in on the trend early!) 3. Miz Mooz Women’s Limerick Platform Shoe If the rest of the girls are insisting on high heels and you don’t want to be dwarfed on your night out, look no further than these bad boys. Super-comfy and in the trendy shade […]

Steep vs. Cheap: Studded ankle strap heels

Nothing beats a classic, sexy black heel, and this week’s Steep vs. Cheap has us lusting over two similar styles with price tags at opposite ends of the spectrum. Paired with formal office attire or black, ankle-grazing skinny jeans and a slouchy tee for a hint of Parisian insouciance, the classic black heel has upped its glam ante with a splash of studs across a sexy ankle strap, making it a brilliantly flattering and versatile shoe choice. So, shoe hoarders, for those of you with a healthy shoe fund cast your eyes on these calfskin beauties from Valentino. The ultimate in pretty-meets-sexy, we love the studded ankle strap detail with a gold-tone buckle and the 3.5 inch heel is the perfect height to last in all day without screaming out in agony! But, shoe lovers, Valentino’s heavenly wares come with a devilish price tag, meaning you’ll have to part with a wholesome £560 before slipping into this pair! But if you’re stuck on a shoestring budget with an uncontrollable heel collecting habit, then fashion damsel in distress saviour, Zara, has the perfect pocket-friendly option. This studded ankle strap version doesn’t have the same peep-toe detail as its high-end rival, but it’s the closest you can imagine getting to Valentino glory on a Vimto budget! Wear with a willowy, oversize blouse and skinny jeans to soften the vampish undertones. Steep: Calfskin sandal with stud ankle strap, £560, available at Valentino Cheap: Studded sling back with ankle strap, £39.99, available at Zara

Fashion predictions – Tailored Jackets

[noskim] Tailored jackets were hidden from the wardrobes of every savvy fashionista not so long ago, out of vogue and unwanted. Thankfully all that silliness has gone and once again tailored sophistication is back from Narnia and can safely be nestled in ones wardrobe. Tailored jackets are set to be a key trend for spring, summer and autumn, and will have equal appeal for both sexes. This is fantastic news for everyone as a good tailored jacket can suit all body types and accentuate all other trends. One of the hottest looks will be the fitted biker jacket. Its classic tailored appeal, teamed with the edgy design of biker chic will appeal to even the steampunk’s amongst us. Tailored jackets will be coming out of the woodwork in all shapes and sizes. We are familiar with the Prince of Wales tweed and the pinstripe but these do not have to be kept for countryside weekends or the board room. Try teaming a tailored tweed jacket with skinny jeans, a knitted sweater and brown leather boots for a smart city look or the pinstripe tailored jacket with chinos and a vest for an afternoon spent shopping and lunching. Yes, I mention that staple fashion garment, skinny jeans but I am not saying that you have to be the periodical skinny Minnie to wear the tailored jacket, far from it. The jacket can suit both men and women who are slim as the tailored look is fitted well and will accentuate the silhouette and give a classic look rather that make one look like they have shrunken in their jacket. Someone who is of a larger size should select a tailored jacket that is not too long. It is all too easy to surround yourself in a lot of fabric and try […]

Celebrities Rocking the Wedge Sneaker Trend

[noskim] Forget Manolos and Louboutins, this season there’s only one way celebs are looking to get their high heel fix: with wedge sneakers. Hollywood A-listers aren’t just wearing their favourite pair of kicks to the gym these days; lately they’ve been spotted incorporating sneakers into their wardrobes in ultra fashionable ways. The wedge trainer trend has kicked off in a big way this autumn, creating a new look craze that combines the high-top sneaker with a chunky hidden wedge heel, to give stars extra lift as well as sporty street cred. Isabel Marant started the new fad when her new take on the old basketball favourite took to the runways as part of her S/S collection. Giving a traditionally masculine shoe an uber-trendy feminine edge, they’re currently taking the high fashion world by storm. Fashionistas have been using them to glam up their casual daywear, as a comfortable alternative to a sexy heel. The look has already taken to the high street too, with Nike launching their own swooshed-up version at JD Sports. So which celebs are stepping out in the new trend? Here are some of the latest stars spotted in the new look wedges. From keeping it on the down low to dressing them up for a night out on the town, they’re all rocking them in different ways, giving us some style inspiration, and proving that this shoe doesn’t just look cool, it’s versatile to boot. Miranda Kerr was one of the first A-listers to slip into wedge sneakers, seen strolling around JFK airport in a pair of red Isabel Marants. Teaming them with a pair of black skinny jeans and a button-down blouse, she kept it casual while travelling with her son. It seems celebrity mums are all big fans of the comfy new heels. Get Ashley Tisdale’s rock chick shopping look

We do like it when all-American girl Ashley Tisdale covers up. Not because we don’t like her body – on the contrary it’s quite heavenly and we find ourselves getting rather green-eyed about it – but because it means we can actually get the chance to steal her style for ourselves. The former High School Musical cutie treated herself to a spot of shopping a few days ago, and we adore her casual but oh-so-stylish getup. Ashley proved that the cheesy pop days are behind her as she donned a Slayer tee and a studded Motel jacket to complete her rock chick image. She will still always be a Disney starlet in our eyes, but we love her kick ass sartorial decisions and wouldn’t mind getting in on the rocker action ourselves by snapping up her exact jacket and t-shirt. Who’s with us? Studded jacket, £90, available at Motel Rocks Coated skinny jeans, £67.50, J Brand available at Donna Ida Slayer vest, $51, Ava Adorn Black Decade sequin trainers, £53, Adidas available at USC

Could Jessica Ennis be starting her own fashion label?

26-year-old Jessica Ennis has already conquered the athletic world by winning a gold medal at the London 2012 Olympics earlier this year, so don’t be surprised if she soon tackes over the fashion world too. “I’d love to start my own fashion label,” she told Bespoke magazine. “Whether it’s collaborating with a sportswear brand or doing the more fashion-y side of things. It’s a brilliant position to be in. It’s nice to have the option to pick and choose clothes – it’s less stressful when you’re deciding what to wear.” We are quite confident that Jess would be able to pull it off, as we predict her collection would be the best of both worlds. She has reportedly described herself as a “skinny jeans” kind of girl which is fine by us – who doesn’t love rocking a good pair of jeans? – but she’d have the glamorous part down to a tee too. After all, Jessica has sported some of the hottest designer pieces from the likes of Alexander McQueen to Stella McCartney over the past few months, so she’d know a thing or two about what makes a gorgeous, stylish outfit. Watch this space! [Vogue]

Five minutes with Isabella Oliver’s Baukjen de Swaan Arons

Founder and Creative Director of Isabella Oliver and the fashion brand Baukjen, Baujken Swaan Arons set up her company in 2003 out of sheer frustration, caused by the lack of stylish maternity wear available on the market. Nearly a decade later, and with a cult celebrity following, Isabella Oliver is bigger than ever and every discerning fashionista’s go-to name for comfortable and stylish pieces. My Fashion Life caught up with Baukjen to talk party season style, fashionable mums and wardrobe staples. Your womenswear brand was called Isabella Oliver 365 before being reintroduced as Baukjen. Tell us what inspired this change in name? Originally, our womenswear collection evolved from the Isabella Oliver maternity line. It grew so much faster than we’d ever imagined and we felt it needed its own space to live and breathe. Separating the brands gives them both the space to grow to their full potential. Name three wardrobe staples you cannot live without. A leather biker jacket is an essential and a modern classic; our Agyness Leather Jacket has jersey inserts so its gives a great fit. I wear it over day looks but also over more dressy evening outfits. Black ankle boots work with everything – leather leggings, jersey dresses, jeans and t-shirts – I’m constantly wearing mine. I love stripes and this season I’m wearing them in jersey. Our caramel and black striped dress is great for quick and easy everyday style. I wear it over leggings, ankle boots and pop the black Maryna Blazer over it and add long necklaces. Isabella Oliver Maternity was set up to provide stylish pieces for expectant mums; what experiences led you to specifically choose this market? When I was pregnant with my first child it was very difficult to find stylish maternity wear that reflected my usual style. […]

Mum-to-be chic: What we want to see in Lara Stone’s pregnancy wardrobe

Ah, another blossoming bump soon to be seen on a pretty model! Last week Lara Stone and husband David Walliams announced they were expecting their first child, and all the ahh-ing and oo-hing at such fab news aside, being the fashion obsessives we are, we started to dream up what Lara’s maternity wardrobe would look like. (Typical, we know.) Used to stunning runway pieces, the busty model’s off-duty looks are quite a contrast. Often papped out for dinner with her hubby, Lara seems to prefer thigh-skimming dresses (remember that Givenchy wedding dress, anyone?)  and A LOT of black (as do most models). Being the face of Calvin Klein, Lara is often photographed wearing dresses by the fashion house and prefers a mainly muted colour palette, save for that brilliant orange Hermès Birkin she’s often toting and the occasional red (killer) pout. Models off-duty, even when carrying a bump, look achingly chic and we’re sure Mrs. Walliams is going to be no different. So ahead of the expansion of her cute lil’ bump, here’s a roundup of chic maternity wear (yes, pregnant dressing can be stylish!) we’d love to see the leggy lady in. Evening dresses are a must for Lara’s dinner dates, as is the preffered off-duty uniform of models: skinny jeans and layered tops. When the orange Birkin is having a day off, a bright blazer is the perfect antidote to an all-black ensemble , and a ruched skirt – well, only a model could make the maternity version look so good! 1. Mamalicious Blue Hilda Striped Lining Blazer, £39.99, available at New Look 2. Neutral Layer Top, £24, available at Next 3. Lulu Lace Maternity Dress, £139, available at Isabella Oliver 4. Midi Ruched Skirt, £59, available at Isabella Oliver 5.  Vince Honeycomb Knit Jacket, £258.34, available at shopbop 6. Maternity Flower Skinny Trousers, £40, available at Topshop […]

Ankle vs. Knee high – The Boot Off!

With the chill descending on the fashion world, many of us have already jumped into our trusty winter boots. And no, we’re not talking about the visually painful Moon boots, but in fact this season’s luxe leather, printed and embellished options. But fashion is never without a face-off, and in this case, a boot-off between the beloved ankle boot and the more serious knee high version is ensuing, making it pretty difficult to choose our preferred version! Ankle (in order of appearance): Eleanor-Dalmation Almond Toe Shoe Boot, £35, available at Stylistpick Rag & Bone Harrow Suede Boots, £385, available at Matches Black Stud Toe Ankle Boots, £65, available at Next   Knee High (in order of appearance): Pierre Hardy Glossed-leather and Suede Knee Boots, £655, available at Net-A-Porter Diane von Furstenberg Crystal High Heel Boots, £354.58, available at shopbop Kurt Geiger London Talia Boots, £295, available at Kurt Geiger The ankle boot is unarguably a wardrobe staple. Perfect for pairing with tucked in or slightly rolled up skinny jeans, or wear with trousers for a winter-appropriate diversion from open toe heels. They’re also the easiest way to toughen up a saccharine sweet dress for daytime, and you could even wear yours à la trendsetter Fearne Cotton, with frilled socks peeking out at the ankle. On the other hand, the suitably demure new season knee high boot is far removed from its previous dominatrix associations. The Equestrian trend has galloped into the lead with flat riding boots, whilst the fashion pack willingly took Givenchy’s leather knee high sheath boots into their stylish stride. Victoria Beckham is at the top of our knee high boot sporting list, having paired them with everything from a mid-length dress to a tight-fitting pencil skirt, and boy does that mother of four know how to make it work! 3 ways to style the blazer

The blazer: a trusty wardrobe dweller and, probably the upper-body sibling of jeans – only because you wear it so much – is the in-between alterative to sweating it out in a coat, or being swallowed up by an unsightly jacket. A good blazer will work wonders for any ensemble, transcending effortlessly between off-duty and office and, like a biker jacket, instantly adding an easy edge to any outfit. That’s why it’s key to invest in one that ticks all the right boxes: good, structured fit; quality fabric and teetering on exciting, rather than Excel-spreadsheet-spouting secretary! We love the Fruma Tux One Button Blazer by Theyskens’ Theory, for its perfect fit, flattering details and quirks such as the signature cut-out section to the back of the neck. Perfect for sipping cocktails in, hosting a power meeting in, or throwing over your favourite off-duty t-shirt and jeans combo – here’s how we’re wearing it. On-Trend Shoes Can Be Comfortable Too!

It’s so easy to be lured in by beautiful shoes. Often they’re so painful we wear them once or twice and then buy some more. And so the cycle continues! But isn’t it about time we started looking for on-trend shoes that are actually comfortable, or at least shoes that fit? To get the perfect fitting women’s shoes we need to start measuring our feet. The one size fits all width is becoming a thing of the past, with a number of high street stores and online retailers selling stylish shoes in various widths. For a bit of inspiration here’s a quick look at the latest trends: Wedges The ultimate spring/summer shoes are wedges – sky high, platforms, even flatforms. Any colour goes but look out for on-trend blues, from ice blue to navy and cobalt, for a nautical feel. Or try opulent metallic for a more versatile choice, in gold, silver or pewter. Embellished Flats Either pumps, sandals or open toed, these wardrobe staples look great paired with skinny jeans and a casual tee. Or for smarter days wear with a pencil skirt and on-trend peplum top. Shoe boots With the disappointing British weather shoe boots have stuck around this summer. Perfect worn with anything from a party dress to office wear, they’re a must-have trans-seasonal shoe. Stay classic with black suede or for something a bit more eye-catching opt for animal print.
