Reese Witherspoon in Theory

Braving the rain to do some last minute shopping in Los Angeles on Saturday, actress Reese Witherspoon was spotted wearing a weather-appropriate jacket by Theory as she browsed the windows. The Swagger dark check mac suited her pared-down look to perfection, and with black riding boots and blue skinny jeans to match – plus a splash of festive colour from her red scarf – Ms. Witherspoon certainly knows how to work the laid back Christmas shopper look. And without an ounce of make-up on her au naturale face, the flawless Avon ambassador certainly proved that less is more. If only we could look that fresh faced in the rain…

In store for SS11: Benetton

A somewhat nautical theme also spread throughout the line, with tasselled boat shoes and oversized beach bags sticking around for another sunshine-inspired season, alongside some rather attractive mauve court shoes – perfect for those summertime garden parties. And whilst we’re on the subject of evening wear, just take a look at these sophisticated white and blue patent clutches for strolling by the British sea side. So thank you, Benetton, for making next summer an ultra girly one – all that’s left now is the sunshine…

Get the look: Rihanna in J Brand

Rihanna left her hotel in Beverly Hills earlier this month in these super cool J Brand Farrah denim shorts, once again proving she’s definitely one to watch on the style scene. We love her casual T-shirt and cut-offs combo, which is effortless yet still on-trend with the trilby hat adding a quirky and playful edge. Her oversized hoop earrings and long-length cross pendent offer a hint of glamour to an otherwise simple outfit, plus, her choice of brown brogues brings the look right on par with the ever-popular preppy look. Despite it being a little cold for bare legs nowadays (well, it is November), we’ve been inspired by Rihanna’s easy daytime-cool to recreate a casual look for a change, so here are our top picks for stealing the singer’s style… Reclaimed Denim Cut Off Shorts, £25, ASOS In a similar cut to the J Brand shorts, these reclaimed denim cut offs from ASOS are perfect for any season – wear with bare legs in the summer a la Rih Rih, or simply add opaques and a chunky-knit for winter. MFL does my-wardrobe: Sportmax Vento mohair jacket

Brr, it’s cold today, isn’t it? So we hear, it’s been pretty chilly all week, too, but we wouldn’t know because we’ve been wrapped up like an Eskimo in mohair. Ah yes, for this week’s instalment of MFL does my-wardrobe, we’ve been wearing something suitably snuggly – Sportmax’s grey Vento mohair jacket. Did you ever want to be something when you were little? Firemen and hairdressers were popular choices, I seem to remember, but I always rather fancied being a teddy bear – they get to go on all those crafty picnics, after all. Luckily for me, my (admittedly strange) childhood dream and slight obsession with Forever Friends came true this week – sort of – when I slipped into Sportmax’s mohair, though some may choose to replace bear with yetti, but y’know, I’m down with that. The cardigan (take note, it’s not actually a jacket) is as soft as you might imagine, and satisfies my indulgent need for something sumptuous and luxury from knitwear this season. Falling at the hip with a slight batwing sleeve, the Vento jacket’s finished with a ribbed trim and cuff which, despite my initial concerns, actually adds a sporty edge and a wearability. It makes it more practical, too – imagine washing your hands if you had furry cuffs (which reminds me, don’t get this fur ball wet) – making for a far sleeker finish. Sportmax’s mohair cardi is also more versatile than you’d probably expect. Team with pared-down leather for soft and sumptuous cool-girl styling, with relaxed tailoring for an unconventional update, or with your favourite pair of skinny jeans and a slouchy tee – it adds a new-season focal point that’s in line with all that faux fur we’re seeing so much of, and in flecked charcoal grey it’s great for breaking […]

A week in Rupert Sanderson: the Tawny vs the Nuance

Rupert Sanderson‘s a name that will send shivers down every fashion-loving girl’s spine – for all the right reasons, of course. Those classic shoes each tweaked with an individual style to transform his talent for traditional craftsmanship into a unique vision have caught the discerning eyes of many a modern day style icon – from Kate Moss to Cheryl Cole, no less – making him a firm favourite on fashion’s footwear radar. Yep, that’s Rupert Sanderson alright, and what most girls would give to spend a day in his delicately-designed shoes. Oh, wait a minute… Yes, yes, yes! Thanks to the powers that be, we’ve got our hands – or should that be feet – on 10 key styles from Rupert Sanderson’s AW10 collection to try on for size. And so, each day for the next week we’ll be putting two styles through their platformed paces to see which pair gets our vote and comes up trumps. So, without further ado, let’s introduce our first footwear face-off: the Tawny vs the Nuance. Firstly, let me apologise now for the amount of squashed toes, undone zips, over-hanging heels and, in some cases, the complete lack of trying on that you may see during the course of this next week. Blame a thing called sample sizes; try as I might, some size fours just won’t hold my size fives. Thankfully both the Tawny and the Nuance do, though we’ll brush over the part where the zips don’t do up. Here’s two ankle boots, both containing a concealed platform with a sky-high stiletto heel and both similar in style and shape, but there’s one very clear difference – one’s black and white houndstooth made from pony skin; the other’s grey suede. So how do they compare? The Tawny Now a houndstooth shoe isn’t […]

10 Hottest items this week

Want to know what to buy from this week’s in-store drop? Take a little inspiration from us – every week we’ll scour the virtual rails of our favourite online haunts to bring you 10 hotter-than-hot items that style-savvy shoppers are just dying to get their hands on as they land. In this week: chunky clog boots, silk blouses, exclusive jewellery and the perfect trans-seasonal socks… 1. French Connection Seaton studded boot, £130, Kurt Geiger Fashion’s obsession with clogs shows no signs of waning as we approach autumn – they’ve just taken on a new-season twist. With a chunky wooden heel, a lace-up front and gold studding detail, French Connection’s brown Seaton clog boots are an instant wardrobe update, and have quickly made their way to the top of our autumn wish-list. 2. Spot jacquard blouse, £125, Jaeger As dressing takes a more minimalist approach, it’s time to embrace staple separates. We love Jaeger’s spot jacquard blouse – not only will its nude shade be suitable for the last remaining days of summer, its tough zip detailing will lend itself well to the new season, too. 3. Mint Lace 60’s Shift Dress, £45, Topshop A simple shift is a wardrobe essential, but the 60s vibe of this Topshop dress is right on-par with fashion’s retro-resurrection as of late. In pastel mint it provides a base for a whole host of accompanying hues, and its lace fabric is a great way to add a touch of texture to your outfit 4. Khaki over the knee socks, £4, ASOS Over the knee socks may seem a little excessive for August, but they’re the perfect trans-seasonal piece for this wayward weather. Throw them on with a dress and wedges to keep the chill at bay, knowing you can just as easily whip them off […]

How to wear it: the J Brand Houlihans

It might be the beginning of August, but waking up to torrential rain in a humid London yesterday, you’d really never have guessed it. But rather than longing for your favourite graphic print playsuit and strappy sandals, reach instead for your J Brand Houlihans. A cross between skinny jeans and cargo pants, they’re the cool new-season way to don your denim (as well as being mid-weather-appropriate) – and if you need a little inspiration as to how to wear yours, take a hint from us below to achieve contemporary-classic style. Cheap Monday batwing shirt, £40 at ASOS A classic white shirt will not only be an investment to your wardrobe for seasons to come, it’s also a great way to add a bit of structure to your relaxed bottom half. We love the boxy cut of this batwing shirt from Cheap Monday at ASOS – the perfect shape to balance out your super-skinny pants – and its sharp collar adds an especially slick touch. Sam Edelman lace-up wedges, £170 at Matches A pair of peep-toe wedges offer a subtle flash of feet and femininity, not to mention the height the heel adds to lengthen your legs – oh, and we’re sure we don’t need to mention the word ‘transitional’ to you, but peep-toe booties will see you through summer and onto autumn. We particularly like the way these Sam Edelman babies finish below the ankle, leaving a sexy sneak of skin before the bottom of your houlihans. Leopard box tassel bag, £30 at Topshop Accessories are the biggest way to wear leopard print right now, so keep on par with the fash pack and grab yourself a statement bag – this box-shaped one from Topshop offers a great faux pony skin texture and comes with a detachable strap to give […]

Nautical Chic: Timberland’s Earthkeeper Deck Shoes

There’s no denying that nautical chic is back with a venegance….so naturally I jumped at the chance to review a pair of Timberland’s Earthkeeper deck shoes. Bang on trend, the shoes are not only gorgeous but eco-friendly too. As part of Timberland’s “Earthkeeper” movement, they’ve utilised a percentage of recyclable materials to create the shoes. For example the soles are made from recycable rubber. As you would expect from Timberland, the quality of the shoe is excellent and they’re super comfortable too. Paired with skinny jeans and a comfy top, I found myself opting for the deck shoes instead of my good old ballet pumps when running daily errands. My only complaint would possibly be the colour. I’m not particularly a fan of red. The shoes are available in tan, navy and white so I think I’ll be investing in the tan pair Definitely a thumbs up from me and a “must have” if you’re thinking of injecting some nautical chic into your wardrobe. The shoes are available online but only on the UK and US website. Visit Timberland.com.

House of Fraser press day AW2010

For autumn/winter 2010, major department store House of Fraser presented their clothes and accessories in different trend-led categories, mixing the labels to give a clearer vision of the kind of image we can expect from the store next season. The ‘Twilight’ category – whilst appropriately acknowledging the popular teen phenomenon -showed off a gothic approach that will cater for the younger market but also featured some wearable separates that will appeal to many a buyer. Revealing a mainly dark palette, key pieces included a black lace halter-neck dress (reminiscent of Prada, fall 2008) from Pied a Terre and cobweb style pullovers from the store’s new house brand, Label Lab. Throw biker jackets and a particularly lovely bag from Ted Baker and you’ve got a strong, laid-back collection of differing textures to create that romantic, vampy look. As we perused the ‘Wild Things’ rack we noticed a distinct nod to Topshop’s brilliant autumn/winter 2010 catwalk, with heavy neutral knits, faux fur and a gorgeous shearling waterfall coat from Therapy. Fluid lines were broken up with a selection of skinny jeans from Linea Weekend and J Brand. Clothing on the ‘Pantomime’ and ‘Vamp’ rails focussed on polished glamour and party-inspired pieces, achieving a more demure and grown up look. Linea’s navy blue shift and Episode’s vibrant red dress, suggest that velvet will be a continuing trend for next season while exquisite statement jewellery from the likes of Erickson Beamon, Mawi and newcomer Fiona Paxton, prove that bolder is better. The ‘Utility’ section offered perhaps our favourite selection of clothes; most notably a heavy duty trench and a jumpsuit, both from Label Lab. There’s plenty of leather on show too. Not only in the shape of biker jackets and Burberry-style aviator coats but more sophisticated silhouettes. Linea have produced a leather skirt and […]

A spot of shopping in our favourite J Brand jeans? Don’t mind if we do Christina Ricci. Spotted doing a little shopping in downtown Beverly Hills, no less, Christina shows us how to make the most of casual dressing; jeans and stylish separates make for the perfect outfit for an all-important shopping trip. Christina opts for classic wardrobe staples for her retail therapy session, pairing her dark blue slim fit jeans with comfortable yet stylish ballet pumps. Mixing in a breton style top with a cardigan in a burst of colour, Hollywood actress Christina manages to look stylish even in her off-duty wear. We’re loving Christina’s J Brand skinny jeans in dark vintage as they’re not too skin-tight and they’re also a really flattering shape and colour. If you want to get your hands on a similar pair try these dark blue low-rise skinny jeans also from J Brand, available from Net-a-porter £160. We think they’re a great addition to your capsule wardrobe, and if Christina makes them look that good, then we’re sold.

Round the table with Henry Holland and Gemma Cairney

As you well know, here at MFL we’re rather partial to a fashion TV series or two, and none more so than Frock Me with TK Maxx, back on TV screens in the UK for a second series to brighten up the bleakest Sunday mornings. Hosted by super-style icon Alexa Chung, London designer Henry Holland and Radio 1 style expert Gemma Cairney, Frock Me follows fashion through its rampant relationship with music as it highlights top trends for the season, chats to the very best in the business, gives DIY styling tips, and shows you how people on the street are working – and styling – the season’s best trends… in a nutshell. Naturally, we were obliged to catch up with Henry and Gemma when TK Maxx invited us to London’s Zetter hotel last week where, alongside a few other bloggers, we quizzed the pair on all things Frock Me and fashion. We’ve seen three shows so far, can you tell us what we can expect from the rest of the series? HH: There’s a show about romance, there’s a show about Americana, there’s a show about festivals; so there’s those theme-shows, and you can expect to see Sophie Ellis-Bextor, you can expect to see Gabriella Cilmi, we’ve had the Future Heads, Marina and the Diamonds, Paloma Faith – she was good, and everyone did live too. And then there’s some very ridiculous sketches… GC: We’ve got prints in Bristol [just aired] which was fun, I actually put a couple up against each other for the Frock Off, and the girl really looks like Alexa so that was good. And then we’ve got in Birmingham Americana – we ended up with about 200 people surrounding us in the middle of town for the final section, so we were kind of […]

Interview with Kate Shapland – the Legologist!!!

It’s April and the thermometer is finally hitting double numbers – 10 degrees does count as spring ladies – especially when we’ve spent the last three months surviving in minus numbers!! But, Spring brings with it the dreaded hair dilemma… to shave or not to shave? Is waxing the real question? We ask Beauty pro Kate Shapland – a much-famed columnist for the daily telegraph and leg expert our burning questions… It’s the tricks that I learnt at uni…Black tights, a bit of foundation and skinny jeans that are my winter mantra! What’s yours? Pretty much the same, but I’ve been surgically attached to a pair of OTKs for most of this winter – a fantastic invention because they cover up podgy knees.  I wear boyfriend cut jeans or leggings because skinnies and tight jeans aren’t comfy to work in.  I never get dressed without applying body cream to my legs – especially shins in the winter because they get dry and itchy.  I get through a lot of it – at the moment I’m working my way through Jo Malone’s Body Crème.  And I tend not to bother with foundation in the day because I work from home: for me, makeup is limited to a dot of blush and lip balm. Only a New Year’s Eve Party and Valentine’s Day force me to go and visit the leg fairy when the sun’s hidden away. How often do you go? As rarely as you for waxing – I tend to shave to save time and because I’m completely pathetic about having hairs ripped off my body.  I even find it hard to have hairs waxed and sugared from around my eyebrows.  I like to be in control of the pain, hence I tend to pluck my own eyebrows and shave […]

Five minutes with Fearne Cotton

TV presenter, Radio One DJ, style icon and, now, designer: Fearne Cotton has been successfully designing collections for Very.co.uk for several seasons, but now she’s venturing onto new design turf. Ms. Cotton’s designing her very own range of Converse for the aforementioned online shopping destination, and naturally, we caught up with the British beauty to chat about her latest challenge and her foray into fashion. You obviously have a great working relationship with Very.co.uk , you’ve designed several collections with them now. How did this collaboration come about in the first place? Doing this has always been a dream of mine, as it is most girls. I have an art background , I did an art course so I’ve always been doodling clothes and my ideas. I really wanted to do something with conviction , I don’t just want to have my name or face to it , so I started with Very about one and a half years ago, got a sense for it and just decided to go for it. I really get a lot of involvement so it’s been a great platform. What is it about the Very brand that appeals to you? I love online shopping. I love not having to leave my home. And also I have the freedom to do what I want with my own collection. I have a huge say in what I do , it’s a great place to be creative and it’s great quality, too. Let’s talk about the new line of Converse you’ve designed for Very. Whose idea was it? Did Converse approach you to do it or was it something you’d long suggested? The Converse guys know I love Converse and have been wearing them for years so they approached me to design my own, and obviously I […]

What to wear this Valentine’s Day

After the January slump, there’s always that sense of relief when February finally arrives. ‘Hurrah, January is over!’ we cheer, as we get back into the swing of work and start counting down the days to the ever-looming Fashion Week. And then we remember that February is the month of Valentine’s Day. Whether we’re loved-up or not, February 14th seems to send the nation into frenzy. We go into panic mode about what exactly we should do to mark the occasion, what gifts we should buy and ,of course , what on earth we should be wearing. The supposed most romantic night of the year, suddenly , and bizarrely – becomes one of the more stressful holidays… For those that choose to celebrate Valentine’s Day (or actively rebel against it for that matter), we have come up with a few outfit suggestions to make preparations for the nation’s ‘date night’ that little bit easier. We’ve selected some of our favourite items as inspiration for your own Valentine’s outfit. Having picked out clothes suitable for a daytime date, a romantic evening or a night out with the girls, we think we’ve got all areas covered… The Lunch Date Outfit One: It is probably most difficult to think of the perfect outfit for the daytime date. Will you be going out for a posh lunch? Meeting for a couple of drinks? Taking part in a fun and spontaneous outdoor activity? Either way, it’s still cold out there, so we think smart layering is the way forward. Skinny jeans are always a winner in our book, so why not update the look for spring with these platform clogs from KG by Kurt Geiger. Team with an oversized cardigan, like this kimono from Bess and a neutral scarf from Therapy for a casual, yet […]

Stella McCartney for GapKids

Stella McCartney for GapKids and babyGap launches tomorrow! The British designer has created a collection for boys and girls from 0-6 months up to the age of 12, which features Stella’s signature touches. Staying true to her vision, a soft colour palette and familiar silhouettes have been redesigned for the GapKids collection to bring a playful, child-like charm to the line. “For years now I’ve wanted to create a collection for kids, said Stella, who’s a mother of three herself. “I think it has a mix of playful and practical. I tried to create a whole kids wardrobe. There are pieces that are classic and sort of timeless and hopefully very chic, mixed with more playful and a little bit cooler pieces. For girls, key pieces include a leopard print knit and a velvet blazer which reflect the designer’s iconic style, whilst flared and skinny jeans provide the basis to many outfits. For boys, monster and superhero graphic tees are fun pieces, with classic items coming in the form of a navy pea-wool coat and an epaulette trench. How adorable. Meanwhile, the babyGap line sees cotton and cashmere styles in simple shapes and soft hues of heather-grey, sky and misty rose across all-in-one pieces and patterned sweaters. “We’re thrilled to have the opportunity to build on successful past collaborations with a world class design talent like Stella, said Marka Hansen, president of Gap North America. Stella McCartney for GapKids and babyGap hits stores in the US today, but launches in stores nationwide across the UK, Ireland and France tomorrow, and from the 11th November in Japan. We know what we’re getting all our little friends for Christmas.

Five of the best: Sequin jackets

Gone are the days when sequin jackets were only associated with bingo callers, Elvis impersonators and holiday park entertainers. Pick a good one and it really doesn’t matter if you’re wearing a comfy t-shirt and boyfriend-cut blazer is big this season and the same applies to sequin blazers. Think Miami Vice, with sparkles on. Then there are textured, vintage style jackets for that world-traveller, just-got-off-the-plane-from-Monte-Carlo-darling vibe. Just add smoky eye shadow and a pout. Choose the cut, colour and size of the sequins wisely and you could have yourself one of those wardrobe treasures that will become threadbare before you get tired of wearing it.

Scarlett sizzles for Mango

Scarlett Johansson’s first advert campaign for Mango has been released. The Hollywood beauty sizzles in a series of sultry images for the Spanish retailer’s Autumn/Winter 09 collection. In one shot, Scarlett is seen posing provocatively with tousled bobbed blonde hair and a bee-sting pout as she drapes herself over a leather coach wearing an 80s-inspired grey micro mini-dress, leopard print coat and towering heels. In a black and white picture, the 24-year-old star smoulders in skinny jeans and a vest as she leans against a wall, propping one studded high heeled foot on a chair.

Interview with Fashion Blogger Claire from Fashion Bomb Dai

With nods from the likes of the New York Post and as a former Teen Vogue and Women’s Wear Daily blogger of the moment, Paris resident and writer-researcher Claire Sulmers from Fashion Bomb Dailyis fast becoming a style expert on all things urban! Her blog attracts thousands of visitors a day and we can see why:  the site offers everything from the latest style and trend stories to the hottest boutiques in town, gives you celebrity looks for less and takes you to the likes of New York Fashion Week (virtually speaking, of course). Here, Claire reveals her thoughts on everything from blogging to bras… This morning, you woke up: And started blogging! As soon as I wake up, I take a few minutes to reflect on what I’m thankful for. Then I crack open the window, open the shades, then grab my computer and start checking e-mails and updating my site! I work part time, so half the week I have to make sure I update in the morning because I’ll be gone all day. I typically post about 3-4 articles in the morning, go about my day, then come back and post the rest in the evening.

Summer knits for those cooler (rainy) days

As I write this, it’s pouring down with rain and to make matters worse, I can hear hailstones hitting the window pane. But yet, just two hours ago the sun was blazing. Oh, you have to love the British weather and its unpredictable nature. The constant climate change is of utmost importance when updating our wardrobes for summer so along with strapless dresses and miniscule shorts one must not forget summer knits for those cooler days. Let me introduce you to this gorgeous colourful batwing summer knit top by French Connection.

Love your style: Michelle Williams

Remember Dawson’s Creek’s Jen Lindley?  The good girl gone bad, gone good, gone bad, gone good again?  While my contemporaries admired Joey Potter’s laid-back style, I was all about Jen’s indie rock chick cheerleader look.  There’s a complex style if ever I saw one – somehow the girl from the big city managed to swap sweet floral summerdresses in NY for ripped tights and revealing minis in Capeside.  But it was Jen’s casual look that accompanied her pixie crop that I’m still fond of now – a shirt, cigarette trousers, and flats – it’s a style the actress that portrayed Jen still pulls off today.

Pixie poses in PPQ

Pixie Geldof does love her fashion, so we weren’t really that surprised to see she had three costume changes when she went to the PPQ Jackdaw store opening last week in Mayfair. Starting off fairly normal in blue skinny jeans, vintage leather jacket and a rather quirky straw trilby, Pixie then changed into that gorgeous PPQ patchwork dress! It’s beautiful dress, not sure why she decided to keep her jeans on though!

Grunge alert: Sass & Bide Destroyed Starting Something Boyfriend Jean

Distressed denim is back. And it is back with a vengeance. Stay ahead of the fashion pack this spring, team your toweringly high platform stilettos with a faded fitted denim jacket and pale blue skinny jeans with rips all over them. To me, this seems like the anathema of true style, but distressed denim has already been spotted on some of London’s most fashion forward designers, buyers and journalists and it’s filtering through to celebrity world as I type. Think Alice Dellal with a few more clothes on and you’ll be on the right track. To get the look without destroying your beloved

London Fashion Week: Twenty8Twelve AW09

Twenty8Twelve was always going to be a wearable collection. Anyone who hoped otherwise must be sorely disappointed. But those who knew what to expect should be happy indeed. For their debut at London Fashion Week, Sienna and Savannah Miller delivered a collection of skinny jeans, tiny leather biker jackets, loose jersey tops, cropped trousers, tailored coats and a very sexy sparkly mini-dress as modelled by Jourdan Dunn. Boring? Perhaps. Actually yes. The truth is while many fashionista’s including myself could snap up many of the basics from the collection, this could easily have been an offering from Topshop.

New York Fashion Week: William Rast AW09

Last night, William Rast not only brought in the celebrities (naturally Jessica Biel was there to support her man, she is stunning!) but also pulled in fashions heavyweights , Anna Wintour (she is tiny!) and Carine Roitfeld (she is amazing!). It was obvious not just from Wintour and Roitfeld’s presence but also from the collection that Justin Timberlake, his partner Trace Ayala and fellow creative directors Marcella and Johan Lindeberg are pushing for credibility in the fashion industry.

Are you ready for the return of the 80’s?

Some may say it is the era fashion forgot, a decade of designs that are best left in the past. But clearly designers and the high street weren’t listening and we are now facing a 1980’s style revolution. But what should you expect? How about…body-con dresses and skirts, batwings, double skirted dresses, shoulder pads, high top trainers, rara skirts, jerseys, baggy jeans, crop tops and neon brights, oh and not forgetting taffeta (hopefully that one will pass us by).
