Alexa Chung at Etam’s fashion show

Etam attracted quite the star-studded crowd at its latest lingerie launch in Paris’s Grand Palais yesterday – Kate Moss came (on the arm of YSL’s Stefano Pilati, no less) to watch boyfriend Jamie Hince perform with the Kills, Beth Ditto sang, as did Boy George and models Natalia Vodianova and Eva Herzigova sat front row – but one caught our discerning eye more than most: Alexa Chung. Swapping thigh-skimming hems for calf-swinging ones, Alexa wore a navy polka dot mid-length dress – fashion’s favourite finish thanks to its Seventies obsession – with a large rust-orange and white flower print and matching pannelled trim. And, becasue no one works a vintage-inspired look quite like Ms. Chung, she teamed her Seventies throw-back dress with a matching skinny belt with chunky black YSL platforms for a cool, contemporary twist. Is that a new darker ‘do we spy as well?

Golden Globes 2011: best dressed

It’s that time of year again when the longest red carpet in Hollywood plays host to the 2011 Golden Globe Awards, and in case you missed our live coverage last night, we’re here to round up the front-running designer frocks and the what-were-you-thinking disasters. From statement scarlet red and rich emerald green to romantic peaches and nudes, take a look at our pick of best dressed celebs that wowed at the Beverly Hilton last night… Leading the way in the sartorial stakes was Mad Men actress Christina Hendricks (above) who looked positively stunning in a scarlet silk crepe floor length Romona Keveza gown – who said red heads can’t wear red? Next up, Black Swan actress Natalie Portman survived the pressure in an elegant Viktor and Rolf silk blush dress with a red sequinned floral embellishment and matching red accessories that we got to see in all the more details when she picked up her Best Actress Award. Angelina Jolie swapped her usual black on black look in favour of this long sleeved sequinned emerald green Versace gown – the power shoulders and scooped back complete with soft side-swept hair proved a huge hit for Angie. Following in the Versace suit was Mad Men actress January Jones (no surprise there), who pulled off flashing all that flesh in a cut-away floor-sweeping red fringed gown. Claire Danes led the way for spring style and opted for a neon pink Calvin Klein halterneck dress – it’s a hard cut to pull off, but the minimalist column cut and colour-popping pink saw this actress reach new sartorial heights (and pick up a Best Actress for TV Series Award). Dressed in a jaw-dropping figure hugging Giorgio Armani dress was actress Anne Hathaway, who too went for big shoulders, long sleeves and sequins on her […]

Kate Moss in Topshop

It’s sad but true – Kate Moss has launched her last ever collection for high street favourite Topshop, and hosting a preview for shoppers on Monday night at the Oxford Circus flagship, she made it one to remember. In true fashion icon style, the 36-year-old supermodel certainly didn’t disappoint in the wardrobe department. Wearing a custom-designed silver Lurex jumpsuit – complements of the Topshop design studio – the mum-of-one went her separate ways with Toppers in a blaze of nostalgic glory. The plunging neckline, flared tailoring and glitter embellishment on the jumpsuit paid homage to the disco diva era of the Seventies – heck, even the King himself would be jealous of this ensemble – much like her final offering for the store. The British super dressed the look with black strappy sandals and patent clutch – all together a very vamp and ultra stylish outfit. After all, would you expect anything less? Let’s just hope Kate doesn’t veer to far from the British high street… we’re waiting on her collab with Uncle Phil’s daughter.

Lunchtime buy: Pixie drape back catsuit

It’s all about the jumpsuit this season, and one of our favourites is Pixie Lott’s drape back catsuit – just one piece in her new Pixie Rocks for Lipsy collection. We love the attached charm necklace, which makes it super easy and quick to accessorise, and the wide leg is also on par with the seventies silhouette seen on the spring/summer 2011 runways. Perfect for dressing up and down, the draped backless design makes it sexy yet sophisticated, while still remaining stylish. For shopping or an afternoon lunch date, wear this ultra-glam jumpsuit with heeled lace-up ankle boots, an on-trend aviator jacket and a fedora hat for a dose of cool. Come evening, pair it with statement platform heels and an embellished trophy jacket. We want this piece for our autumn wardrobe right away. Pixie Drape Back Catsuit, £65, available at Lipsy. Five minutes with Barbara Hulanicki

Legend isn’t a word we like to throw around lightly, but it’s the only word we see fit to describe Barbara Hulanicki – a woman who, alongside her husband, changed the face of British fashion in the Sixties. After starting her career as an illustrator, Barbara Hulanicki shot to success with Biba, the iconic fashion store, almost half a century ago and she’s since trod many waters in several different shores – fashion design in Britian, Brazil and Japan, makeup, numerous collaborations and interior design in Miami. That’s where she currently resides, with her hugely successful interiors company, and has been credited with doing as much for the architecture scene over there as she has done for fashion here. More recently, however, she’s the subject of a feature film, Beyond Biba, which charts her incredible life from her humble beginnings to her soaring success. After grabbing a copy of the film, we caught up with Barbara Hulanicki to find out more about this often over-looked but undeniably talented designer. First of all Barbara, congratulations on Beyond Biba! Yes, well, I had nothing to do with it – it was the lads who did it all. How did it come about? Well that came about because Louis’s [Price, director] mother used to work for me in the Sixties and Seventies at Biba, then she just rang me up and said could Louis come and film you in Miami while you work? So I said yes, why not? And I thought it was just an interview actually, I didn’t realise it was going to be so much fun and games. Well it’s fantastic. We’ve seen it a couple of times now and we love it. Oh do you? Fabulous. I try not to watch it – I get very cross with myself […]

Zac Posen Resort 2011

My is Zac Posen petite in person! The slender designer was all smiles as he greeted guests at his 2011 Resort Show, sharply dressed in a tailored-to-perfection navy suit and purple shirt. The show was held in Posen’s Tribeca showroom and the atmosphere was fittingly about as resort-like as it could feel on a rainy, gloomy New York City afternoon. A corner palm tree, white washed brick walls, creaky shabby-chic wooden floors, cream cushioned gold chairs, white flowers, and deliciously scented Diptyque burning candles perfectly complemented the looks that made their way down an ivory runway. Posen explained that when designing his looks he wanted to give his “woman attitude without being aggressive.” The designer continued by remarking that the collection is meant to reflect the point “where the Forties meets the Seventies,” adding that achieving an overall soft feel was key. Posen’s inspiration came through loud in clear in his use of texture, transparency, embellishment, and via his colour and fabric choices. The collection’s embellishments included couture-like bead-work, feathers, and furs, all of which adorned delicate tulle, crepe, organza silk, and tweed, making for dressy day, cocktail, and evening looks. There was a lusciously alluring femininity to the collection that tied into Posen’s inspiration notably in the designer’s use of sheer fabrics. A number of the full-length looks in fact looked almost negligé-like (though perhaps Posen’s clients will opt to wear the sheer pieces as bathing suit cover-ups when on their yachts in St-Tropez rather than as risqué evening gowns). One look in particular was completely sheer, with nothing but feathers adorning the light chiffon fabric covering the model’s body. Also of note were intricate back and chest details and cut-outs – two of fashion’s latest androgynous zones (think Sandra Bullock’s dress at the MTV Movie Awards last week). […]

Whistles AW10 Press Day

Whistles is the go-to shop for those dream day-to-night dresses, they do perfectly cut pieces in stunning prints that have a really contemporary yet sexy feel – basically Whistles rarely gets it wrong. With this in mind we went along to their Autumn Winter 10 press day recently and once again we fell in love with the collection. Filled with wearable pieces from wool tailored trousers to sumptuous outerwear to stand-out evening wear, Whistles AW10 range is set to be making a significant appearance on our wish list for next season. There were a few pieces we fell in love with in particular, including a deep red digitally printed dress with geometric cut-out neck detail and fierce padded shoulders – perfect for cocktails and dinners when worn with killer heels and bold lips. Another standout piece from the collection is a blue wool cropped biker jacket with a shaggy hair collar. And if you’re after a statement jacket then look no further, as this gorgeous piece has a seventies feel to it and is a nod towards the AW trend for luxe feel outerwear. As well as all of the rails of clothes we were lusting after, Whistles’ very quirky sheepskin covered shed took our fancy too. Used to house their accessories collection we thought it would look rather chic as our new wardrobe. Unfortunately the furry shed isn’t going to be a available to buy, but we’re not too disappointed as we’ve got more than enough to look forward to with the coming AW10 collection.

MET Ball 2010: Erin Fetherston in Juicy

Following her recent appointment as guest designer at Juicy Couture, Erin Fetherston stepped out onto the red carpet in a bespoke Juicy gown at the Costume Institute Gala over the weekend. If you thought Juicy was confined to velour tracksuits then you’re wrong, well half wrong. Yes you guessed it; this 1930s inspired dress is indeed made from a high shine velour – with chiffon detailing. There’s no denying that the relaxed silhouette of the dress is classic and elegant, but we’re just not quite sure it works so well in velour. Luckily Erin is gorgeous so she pulls of the look pairing the deep V with a long pendant that gives it a luxe seventies feel. Definitely a different approach to the evening gown, and who knows, velour could be the next big thing on the couture catwalks?

London Fashion Week SS10: Jaeger London

This show had a very starry front row. Not only was Peaches Geldof, Jade Parfitt, Erin O’Connor and Tamsin Egerton there but David Walliams also put in an appearance. However it wasn’t any of these who caused the catwalk to fall into mass excitement, but instead it was the presence of fashion royalty. Yes Anna Wintour was there looking as polished as ever. But back to the clothes. This was a very seventies inspired collection, and was both wearable and stylish. The colour scheme was fabulous, I adored the postbox red and the mushroom shades, it was a collection very much for the city slicker. There were some great pieces, the playsuits were real winners and the pleated chiffon trousers were stunning. The harems felt a little out of place, I feel that we’ve moved on from this trouser shape. There was a glammed up utility feel with sequins featuring heavily, alongside metallic fabrics and bold monochrome. Culotte style shorts were paired with billowing blouses, long line blazers added a new dimension to the wardrobe staple and the knitted body which shouldn’t work really did. Some great key pieces could be found here, and the pictures don’t really do the collection justice. For this collection is about quality both in terms of textures and fabrics. The handbags are sure to be gracing the arms of the A list. Jaeger London does do some beautiful pieces, and some are very stylish and at times quirky pieces. It’s one of those collections that there’s something for everyone. So next Spring Summer will you be skipping a seventies inspired step?

Johnny Blue Eyes: Bringing democracy to fashion

I’m seated at the entrance of Nandos in Shepherds Bush. This is fashion stylist, Johnny Blue Eyes’ favourite restaurant. It’s also his local. Born and bred in Shepherd’s Bush, Johnny has lived in the area all his life, although he does flit between his home town and New York. As he approaches the door I recognise him instantly. His long thick dark hair is a major giveaway. He’s wearing a hoodie paired with leather trousers, accessorized with a big buckled belt and carrying a large oversized bag. Johnny greets me so warmly that I feel immediately comfortable in his presence. At 41, he describes himself as an artist first and foremost, however his love for dressing up has played a major part in his path down the road of fashion. Johnny is perhaps better known as a stylist, in particular for his work with artists such as Beth Ditto (whom he considers to be a close friend), Ana Matronic from the Scissor Sisters, the Klaxxons and many more famous faces. At the moment, the self-confessed grafter (Johnny wakes up at 7am every morning and hits the sack at 2am) has made a move to the world of design through his label House of Blue Eyes. “The House of Blue Eyes is essentially a movement”, says Johnny passionately. “It’s very inspired by Warhol and the energy of The Factory of New York in the late sixties, early seventies with me as the sort of Warhol-esque character with all these designers and artists and performers and models who are part of that house. The fashion collection is a big room in the house but it is essentially bringing together fashion, art and music…. The House of Blue Eyes is a house of love, and hope and change.” It was the House of […]

Gwyneth Paltrow for ZOEtee’s: The Update

It was only yesterday that we reported Gwyneth’s new career path. But already the first look sketches are out, and well, it’s hard to go on. The collection will comprise of seven looks and will incorporate cashmeres and wool mesh alongside ZOEtee’s signature jerseys. It is apparently a combination of Seventies style, with a bit of rock and a pinch of men’s tailoring. I don’t know about you but that just makes me think flares.

Get Suspended!

Either Steve Erkel’s legend presided over the proceedings of the spring shows in New York or tis the season to be suspended since braces were out in full force. Notwithstanding Larry King’s hoary relationship with braces, the philia being shown towards suspenders is unprecedented. Then again, Rag & Bone were up to bat on day one of the week’s festivities so the penchant for braces could very well have stemmed from the seventies, skinhead feel of the British duos SS09 collection. All the same, it’s quite evident that suspenders haven’t gotten this much play in decades so, for some, the return to sartorial tradition is more so a trek into new frontiers.

Roksanda Ilincic: Drab not fab at Fashion Week

Wind back the clock precisely one year and Roksanda Ilincic was showing off her sassy spring summer 08 collection. It was savvy, it was feminine and it had guts. A year on, and the Central St Martins graduate has done the unthinkable, something I didn’t think her capable of. Put bluntly, her new collection is, well, rather butch. Gone are the art deco pleats and hyper large shoulder pads. Gone also are the clashing acid yellows, cobalt blues, golds and blacks. Instead she has produced something more vulnerable.

London Fashion Week: Eley Kishimoto

Eley Kishimoto showcased in the large BFC tent: on possibly one of the dreariest days of the year the collection was a lovely window into next years sunnier seasons. The show was dominated by a schoolgirl kitsch, big floaty dresses that kept the lines very simple with hardly a ruffle to be seen. Puff sleeves were probably the most endearing feature, I honestly haven’t gone near them since I was over the age of six, and it brought a certain sweet nostalgia to the show; as did the satchel bags, stripy sun hats and school-boy shorts.

Milan Fashion Week: Prada

Anytime soon, Miuccia Prada will be known as fashion’s mad hatter.….but do we care? No, we love her and her wacky approach which some how always works. Pulling looks from the sixties/seventies art scene, the collection from Prada is the stuff of fairytales….whimsical and dreamy. Fabrics are soft and floaty, print dresses are paired with loud tights and attention grabbing platforms and colours are used solely for the purpose of clashing. Love it! [Images:Style.com]
