Suffering a fashion finance famine? Check out our edit of this week’s best sale buys

Welcome to another Friday crammed with pocket tingling sale finds! This week’s edit is an eager effort to really push us into spring mode, but we’ve taken into consideration the odd spurts of traditional British weather that keeps all fashion people on their toes. We particularly love the eye-wateringly glitzy Krystal Swarovski necklace as it takes over in budget form from the glorious neck adornments we saw at Prada, and, the sugary pink Perspex pouch has a perfect touch of spring/summer 2012’s sporty vibe. We followed the grey clouds to make sure bluster-appropriate gear came with the package, too. Bionda Castana’s Lucia boots, with their multi buckle detailing and shearling inner, are the ultimate treat for your feet – and pocket! The luxe leather & cow wool jacket by Sunsea is the perfect boxy investment, whilst we can’t stress enough the sartorial superiority of an impressively crisp white shirt – Balenicaga’s long sleeved poplin version is your saviour. 50s Ladylike: Channel your inner domestic goddess

The domestic goddess is back for the spring season with a vengeance. It’s no longer about the softly dressed, apron donning 50s housewife anymore, but her sharper edged alter ego. She’s back with a doting affection for pop pastels, print and sharp primness rather than the baking kit. Think pop pastels, knee length fit and flare dresses and statement crystal jewels. We love that she takes both the fashion stakes and the kitchen by storm and has an air of rebellion about her – she won’t lift a single pan because the new season isn’t about submitting to the rules, but rather bending them backwards. For spring summer 2012, the mid century modern aesthetic ruled, and it meant a fun revival of 50s retro style, with Jason Wu, Prada and Erdem all playing to the tune of the 50s housewife with a heavenly wardrobe. For this week’s Runway to Bedroom Mirror we’ve selected pieces that exude femininity while at the same time deliver on the fun factor. Enjoy playing domestic goddess, even it it’s for a little while, without having to set foot in the kitchen!   Mulberry Harriet Clutch Wallet Bag, £350, available at Matches Bow Trim Pleat Front Top, £140, available at Jaeger Venezia8 Enzo Angiolini, £125, available at Kurt Geiger Animal Jacquard Skirt, £38, available at Topshop Alexander McQueen Freshwater Pearl Ring, £225, available at Matches Erdem Marlena Floral Printed Dress, £1,035, available at My Theresa Maison Du Posh Embellished Clutch, £395, available at Selfridges Cat Eye Sunglasses with Cut Away Detail, £12, available at ASOS Maxmara Verace Dress, £289, available at Harrods Krystal Swarovski Crystal Drop Earrings, £20, available at ASOS

Rolling in the Deep – trouble that is, Mr Lagerfeld

We’re gearing up to kick off fashion month – well, NYFW is well under way with several reports of FROW-gracing celebrity IT girls- and it’s all getting a little heated. Kanye’s decided to show in one of fashion’s most easily offended cities again, after a rather ‘rap with a capital C’ to quote one onlooker, debut, and Karl Lagerfeld is on some sort of mission to be branded the next Galliano (minus the racism), after unnecessarily mentioning one of fashion’s pet hates when talking about the ridiculously talented Adele: the ‘F’ word. Yes, the man at the helm of the intertwined C’s candidly called Adele ‘fat’ in an interview with the Metro newspaper, although he cleaned up his verbal vomit by adding she has a ‘beautiful face and a divine voice.’ In the real world, there is nothing untrue about Lagerfeld’s comments. Adele is a large lady. ‘Large’ can be taken as euphemism on my part, if you wish, but it doesn’t withdraw from the fact that Adele isn’t Alexa. On an equal footing, Adele’s weight doesn’t deduct a single scrap of talent from the phenomenally gifted young lady that she is. Tremendously admired either side of the pond, with global album sales in excess of 23.5 million; this immense affection for her arises from the simple fact that she can, with such ease, captivate an audience of thousands by appearing on stage with just a microphone and pianist in tow. That not a single special effect; vintage Versace body or pyrotechnic-laden spectaculars are needed to enhance what she has. She has it all. But it wasn’t labeling Adele ‘a little too fat’ that got my mind reeling, it was more the reaction afterwards. The Cut reported on designer Isaac Mizrahi’s unwavering defence of Lagerfeld’s comments, as the designer ran to […]

Looking for a pair of specs? Look no further!

We very rarely feature glasses here on MFL, so when we received an email from a concerned reader asking us to recommend a pair of specs we put down our coffee, quickly scoffed our cupcake and did what we do best – we scoured the online world for a great pair of eyeglasses. Now before we share our findings, it is important to remember that when looking for the perfect eyewear not only is it vital to find something wearable with a variety of outfits but of course it’s also crucial to take face shape in to account. Note… – Ovals are lucky enough to wear most frames – Round faces can opt for rectangle styles – Squares should stick to oval or cat eye frames – Heart-shaped faces can also experiment with cat eye or butterfly frames. For our reader in question we’ve sourced a pair of vintage inspired rectangle specs by Derek Cardigan that are versatile enough to be worn daily. On sale at Lensway – (a great online secret of ours!) these glasses retail for £69 (previously £370). No your eyes aren’t deceiving you, the price really is that great. And if these designer glasses aren’t your thing you’re guaranteed to find something to suit you over at LensWay. With a wide selection of eyeglasses and sunglasses from top brands such as Armani, Calvin Klein, Tom Ford and many more at fantastic price, we’re 100% sure you’ll be hooked!

2011 in news: 10 things that shook the fashion world this year

Among the clinking glasses of endless mulled wine toasts, pre-Christmas mince pies and secret peeling of presents under the Christmas tree, there’s just one more thing left to do this year: reminisce. 2011 has been a significant year for the fashion world. Craze-inducing collaborations, a royal wedding remembered more for the dress than the extra public holiday and fashion losses so large the entire industry collectively wept. And what have we done with all that? Rounded it up, of course. Below, we bring you fashion’s best and most moments shocking of 2011. 1. The royal wedding dress April 29th will forever be marked in our minds as a date that made unparalleled fashion history. Alexander McQueen’s creative head, Sarah Burton, was spotted entering the Goring Hotel merely hours before the royal wedding took place, sparking rumours she’d designed the dress. Indeed, she was bestowed with this burdensome duty and boy, did she deliver! The exquisite appliquéd lace dress acquired Burton deserved acclaim in the fashion world, culminating in an unsurprisingly big win at the British Fashion Awards last month.  A big year for Sarah Burton – an even bigger year for fashion. 2. John Galliano – Dismissal from Dior and namesake label Probably the most gulp-inducing, tear-jerking headline to emerge from the fashion world this year was the dismissal of Dior design master, John Galliano. Arrested in a Parisian cafe after allegedly assaulting and racially abusing a couple using anti-Semitic remarks, the allegations against the couture creator were all founded in court, resulting in his rapid fall though the echelons of the very industry that homed him. His immediate suspension from Dior, and later from his namesake label, sparked an emotional outcry amongst Galliano’s closest industry friends. Whilst the hunt for his replacement is said to be in its final […]

We found Valentia, have you? (This exclusive vid of Freja Beha might help!)

“Valentina! Valentina!,” they cry. Only Valentina isn’t there. She’s gone exploring the city, the little rascal – and she smells ruddy nice, too. Not got a clue what we’re on about? Valentina, the new scent from Valentino, has just launched, but with Freja Beha Erichsen as its face, this fragrance has an overriding naughtiness that you’ll find hard to resist. In her first acting role – and fragrance ad, FYI – Freja plays the part of Valentina, a modern heiress who’s unphased by the fuss surrounding her and would frankly rather go in search of an adventure. And escape she does, during her birthday party in the grandest Italian casa, as it happens (awkward timing, Freja!) to explore the neglected nocturnal streets of Rome and smooch up to a hot guy in his car. If only that happened every time we wanted out. We were whisked away to Rome last weekend to find Valentina, and after copius glasses of fizz and exquisite food on sun-drenched terraces overlooking the seductive Italian city, we tracked her down (though, if we’re playing fair, that might have had something to do with having the Valentino team for tour guides). So, how does Valentina (the girl) translate to Valentina (the fragrance)? So sweetly, since you ask. The scent – an “irreverant Italian floral oriental” – opens with notes of bergamot and white Alba truffles, both typical of Italy, for a zesty freshness with a bold edge. In their trail, jasmine, orange blossom and tuberose create a crisp beauty, while wild strawberries recreate Freja’s irresistible rebellion. To finish, cedarwood and amber add a seductive sensuality that, when cased inside a gorgeous glass bottle boasting three signature Valentino nude flowers and a strikingly sophisticated black topper, couldn’t come closer to the fashion label’s essence. Classic yet modern, […]

Lady Gaga goes all Audrey Hepburn at iHeartRadio

Look! Lady Gaga looks like a lady! It’s not that she generally looks like a man, of course – save for when she turns into Joe Calzone – but let’s be frank, it’s rare that Lady Gaga ever looks presentable and polished. Still, here she is, playing the part of preened and pampered pomp in a form-fitting all-black two piece with a bow at the waist and exaggerated hips. She’s finished her Audrey Hepburn impression with a statement diamond necklace, oversized round-edged sunglasses, leather elbow gloves and suede platform pumps to complete her slightly saucy take on a classic Sixties style. It’s a very different look for the singer, who’s more accustomed to little more than knickers and 12-inch platform boots, but it’s just another role in her book of characters, one assumes. Question is, what do you think of her look? Do you like her lady-like ensemble, or did you prefer her avant garde get-ups? [poll id=”209″]

London Fashion Week SS12: Peter Jensen

This is a guest post by Sarah Driscoll, one of our fabulous competition winners. She’s been hitting the tents at Somerset House as a guest fashion reporter for My Fashion Life to cover as many of London’s spring shows as she can make – find out how she got on when we armed her with a bag full of tickets and sent her packing… Who: Peter Jensen What: Known for always centring his collections around a famous female muse, Jensen’s SS12 collection focused on troubled jazz singer, Nina Simone. Highlights: The safari animal printed suits and floral tulle dresses, rounded off with the cute ankle socks and bohemian turbans. Lowlights: Those who didn’t like the character may have struggled to escape the theme. Thoughts: It’s quite poignant, considering the recent loss of another infamous troubled jazz singer, that Jensen focused on Nina Simone. Simone’s stubborn, strong and independently-minded character was the inspiration for the pieces, and the clothes certainly made that presence felt. White broiderie Anglaise trench coats and ankle strap shoes with socks suggested an innocent femininity, whilst the angry-eyed tortoiseshell sunglasses and huge hair tucked in black straw turbans showed a more dramatic, passionate side – as did the raunchy satin-front bustier dresses. Leopard print cropped trousers and gold lurex jumpers offered a more relaxed, off-duty approach to the glamour, as models walked to a live piano performance, which further enhanced the sense of the musician behind this inspiring collection. Watch the video of Peter Jensen’s spring/summer 2012 show below: Peter Jensen SS12 | Rightster, posted with vodpod

London Fashion Week SS12: Tiffany Amber

This is a guest post by Sarah Driscoll, one of our fabulous competition winners. She’s been hitting the tents at Somerset House as a guest fashion reporter for My Fashion Life to cover as many of London’s spring shows as she can make – find out how she got on when we armed her with a bag full of tickets and sent her packing… Who: Tiffany Amber What: Celebrating the ‘Siren of the Nile’, Tiffany Amber’s collection was a love letter to strong, powerful women who are not afraid of glamour, the female form or colour. Highlights: The rich green, mustard and navy printed silk suits with matching vintage trunk-shaped bags. Lowlights: The turquoise crepe print dresses were borderline bland when considered next to the rest of the collection. Overall: Glamour and Africa were the two prevailing themes of Tiffany Amber’s spring 2012 show. Keisha Buchanan and Foxy Brown took Front Row position as flowing dresses slit to the thigh with slashed necklines came down the runway in Quality Street shades of purple, green and golden yellow. The symmetrical prints of deeper, richer blue, green and mustard were the highlight of the show, and featured on straight cigarette pant suits, fitted dresses and even the vintage trunk cases that many of the models carried. Canary yellow and electric blue sheer blouses were also hero pieces, celebrating a feminine confidence that seemed to be the shows predominant attitude; an aura that was further accentuated by the unrelenting use of bold colour throughout the whole collection. Kooky round sunglasses and chunky bright fabric necklaces complemented the strong and exotic collection.

Editor’s survival kit: London Fashion Week

As New York kicked off the month-long fashion processions last week, so London Fashion Week falls this Friday. We should be prepared, given that it only happens twice a year, but somehow it always manages to spring round the corner quicker than summer can stick around. And so, I find myself in the same situation every season. What the hell do I wear? What bag do I take to carry all my stuff? What shoes will I wear to combat the cobbles (and which flats should I take as precaution?)? While I’ve yet to answer any of those questions, there are a few things I know I’ll need: my can’t-survive-without-them essentials. From moisturiser to mints, these are things that litter my bag, without fail, every fashion week; the things that help me function; the things that help me breathe a little easier: my survival kit. So yes, while I do risk tripping over the dirt track due to some poorly-conceived heels, at least I’ll have hydrated skin. When I get stressed, so does my skin. I always keep a hand-sized tube of moisturiser in my bag to banish any dry spots inbetween shows – plus, it’s great for faking a dewy complexion pre-party (just press the palms of your hands gently onto your face as a final touch). Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream intensive daily moisturiser, £28 £25.20, available at Debenhams. From pre-party to post, I never leave the house without YSL’s Touche Eclat – it hides all signs of the night before’s bash (because though I might be feeling the effects of two hours sleep and too much champagne, nobody else need know!). Yves Saint Laurent Touche Eclat, £24.50 £22.05, available at Debenhams. When my skin’s looking lack-luster and lifeless after a long day of shows, I swear by […]

Where we went on FNO: the high street

This is a guest post by Lois Mills, one of our (frankly brilliant) competition winners. Last night we sent her on a special mission to sift out the sweetest soirees taking place on the high street at Fashion’s Night Out – and not one to turn down a challenge, she triumphed in her task. Here, Lois shares her experiences on her very first Fashion’s Night Out… The night everyone has been talking about has arrived: Vogue’s Fashion’s Night Out. You know that you can only expect greatness when three of the best words in the dictionary are used all in the same title (and in case you’re having a little difficulty choosing which three words I mean, let’s just say I’m not a fan of the ‘out’doors!). Having caught a little of what happened at last year’s events, and having spoken to Daisy (the other competition winner) about what to wear, I was giving my outfit choice some serious consideration. In the end I went for a very Seventiess vibe, with high-waist purple velvet trousers, a green vintage vest and a studded black belt; topped off with a retro pair of glasses and a black wedge-and-sock combo for my feet! On the train, I was busily taking advantage of the VFNO app; discovering what was going on in every store whilst viciously scribbling them down, trying to be strategic and rank them in order of importance and closeness to one another. A few minutes later, and my list was longer than Oxford Street itself – tonight was going to be hectic! For me, the night began in John Lewis – there were three fashion shows running over the course of the evening, and Mischa Barton was present at one of them. Fingers crossed. I was at the first show, and […]

Fergie looks slick in her Versace shades

Despite the occasional faux pas, we’re huge fans of Fergie – she’s got style, confidence and recently, a wardrobe to match. Last week, the Black Eyed Peas singer stepped out at LAX International Airport in a pair of stylish Versace January J sunglasses, looking every inch the glamorous superstar. Working a pair of tan leather trousers, a print-alicious Balenciaga shirt and a Celine tote alongside her luxe shades, Fergie made a striking statement that struck the perfect balance between pared-down and stand-out. And by working a simple Bradshaw bun and pair of very now gold hoops, Fergie reminds us that statement jewellery is great in moderation, too. [poll id=”189″]

Who wore it best? Lady Gaga vs Emma Stone in Tom Ford

Lace has been a huge trend this season, with models and celebrities alike choosing the feminine fabric for everything from socks to smocks and dresses. So, of course Ms Try Everything Once, aka Lady Gaga, would also don this delicate décor in the form of a fabulous Tom Ford dress. The singer wore the white, fully-laced dress in virginal white, straight off the Tom Ford AW11 runway, to promote her new single You and I in New York last week. Gaga’s version featured long sheer sleeves, which the singer snazzed up with strings of pearls and a gold brooch, keeping with the retro style of the dress. And in true Gaga kookiness, she added in a gigantic white frilly bloom hat and bug-eyed sunglasses. Actress Emma Stone, on the other hand, went for the dark and dramatic look at the premier of Crazy, Stupid, Love in New York back in July. The black lace dress contrasted against her pale skin, looking even more breathtaking with suede Louboutin heels. Stone made the dress look super sophis with a sleek side parting and dark lipstick – and we love the way the jolting hips create curves for her slender frame. But who do you think wore it best: Gaga with her vintage virginal white look, or Emma Stone in her vampish dark and decadent dress? [poll id=”188″]

French designer creates ‘lingerie for children’

Not as controversial as the Pain au Chocolat or the disastrous correlation between increased hip size and consumption of these French favourites; it appears France can’t stop with its notorious ignorance for matters high of importance. Only recently, the scandal surrounding 10-year-old Thylane Blondeau blew out of control, after images of the young girl, dressed in adult attire and posing proactively for Cadeaux magazine circulated on the internet. The images caused a furore amongst critics and eventually led to the young girl’s mother terminating the aspiring child model’s Facebook page in order to protect her from negative media attention. France, undisturbed by the consequences, shrugged off the commotion. And this blasé take on such a pressing matter only seems to have been continued with the launch of a rather disturbing concept: Jours Après Lunes – “the first designer brand dedicated to ‘loungerie’ for children and teenagers, comprised of loungewear and lingerie to be worn over and under, inside and outside.” It says ‘children and teenagers’, but the latter seems to have been forgotten as the range is aimed mainly at ages 4-12. Kids love loungewear – it’s the unwritten uniform of non-school days – but using the term ‘lingerie’ in this age context, combined with loungewear to create ‘loungerie’ isn’t distracting enough from the adult undertones. The designer behind the sinister collection wanted mother and daughter to match their undergarments, but there appears to be a major oversight – the adult lingerie market is positioned very differently, and the sexual nuances present in lingerie ad campaigns speak for themselves. The danger of recklessly referencing this with a collection aimed at young girls can’t be ruled out, and some of the images for the ‘loungerie’ campaign are, simply put, shocking. The young ‘filles’ in the campaign shots recline over chairs, covered […]

Lady Gaga ditches top designers for Birmingham fashion student

Being the Lady who plays dress up every day must be tough. Lady Gaga’s eccentric dress sense is the equivalent of a two-fingered insult in the face of political correctness and a modest wardrobe. But the fashion oddball stunned fashion critics last week when she was spotted in L.A. in what appeared to be a ‘normal’ dress (cue: meat-free and actually decent). Gaga looked surprisingly pared down as she stepped out in a fall 2011 Versace dress, even keeping the accessories inoffensive: oversized black shades, gold cuff, Louboutin Daffodil heels and a black clutch. Looking eerily like the creative director of the label she was wearing – Donatella Versace – minus the carroty glow; the toned down Gaga, as opposed to her otherworldly form is probably telling us something: maybe she wasn’t really born that way. Although a best-selling artist, fashion is, in a strange way, Lady Gaga’s forte. Without the unearthly creations she is synonymous with, Lady Gaga’s rise to fame may have been a slightly slower affair. Walking the catwalk for stylist, Thierry Mugler creative director and long-term, friend, Nicola Formichetti, she later bought his entire fall 2011 collection – in every colour. With every top designer at her beck and call, Gaga chose to showcase the wares of a designer not so close to home on a recent trip to Singapore to promote her album, Born This Way. Resembling an extraterrestrial Audrey Hepburn, Gaga sported a nude coloured rubber dress by Birmingham fashion student Rebecca Short, complete with a shocking green beehive, double-rimmed glasses and white gloves. The look – typically dripping with Gaga antics – means a world of exposure for the 22-year-old aspiring fashion designer and appears to be a heartfelt gesture from Lady Gaga to support and nurture emerging fashion talent. Previously, Gaga requested the […]
