5 films which changed the face of fashion

Fashion and film have always gone hand in hand, and some of the most iconic moments in fashion have been captured on the big screen, from Audrey Hepburn’s classic little black dress in Breakfast at Tiffany’s to Marilyn Monroe’s ruffled white dress in The Seven Year Itch. It’s not surprising that a lot of the world’s greatest fashion designers have been heavily influenced by films from various genres across the decades. So which films made fashion what it is today? 1. A Clockwork Orange and Jean Paul Gaultier You might not imagine Stanley Kubrick’s dark and difficult cult classic ‘A Clockwork Orange’ to have had a profound influence on the world of fashion, but the bizarre and oddly intimidating cricket whites, white shirts and bowler hats of Alex and the Droogs inspired one of the most influential fashion designers of modern times. The actor Malcolm McDowell who played protagonist Alex bumped into Jean Paul Gaultier at a film festival who profusely thanked him for his costume, “Thank you very much, because that film changed my whole design.” he said. 2. Chinatown and John Rocha Roman Polanski’s Chinatown made in 1974 in John Rocha’s eyes is “One of the all-time great movies on every level.” The film has been selected by the Library of Congress for preservation in the United States National Film Registry for films that are “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant” which gives a good indicator of just how brilliant this film is lauded to be. For John Rocha it is Jack Nicholson who is the embodiment of the film. “He is super-cool and sharp but at the same time it is totally effortless.” Such is the influence of Nicholson’s suit, trilby and sunglasses combo that every time Rocha makes a menswear collection he thinks about how Nicholson would […]

Travel Essentials: What to pack and what not to pack!

mag You’ll probably be off on your jollies within the next few months, and although the prospect of lying on a deck chair in the Mediterranean sun is quite appealing, we know that what comes before – i.e. the dreaded packing and airport madness – is anything but. So we are here to offer a helping hand and virtually assist you with your packing with a list of what to pack and more importantly what to leave behind. Bruised arms and excess baggage airport fines will be a thing of the past! What not to pack: Your finest handbag. We know not toting your favourite designer handbag on holiday might be a tad depressing, but nothing is more depressing than finding out someone has broken in your hotel room and stolen it while you were necking Sambuca shots in the bar downstairs. Or you’ve accidentally got sand in it. Excessive sun also doesn’t do expensive handbags any good either, so leave your fine accessories at home and opt for something cheap and cheerful instead. Your Christian Louboutins. Again, packing the things that you’ve worked months to be able to afford is never a good idea for a holiday where all you want to do is let your hair down and relax. What if the pesky airline loses your luggage? How would you feel about never waking in your fave red-soled beauties again? We can’t bear to even think about it! Hair electrics. Ladies, leave the bulky hair dryers and hair straighteners at home where they belong. The sun will damage and dry out your hair enough without adding heat styling to the mix. Pack a couple of bottles of hair mousse and go for the California beach wave look instead. Your hair will love it, and you can pack a […]

Katy Perry gets her Smurf on in three blue dresses in Cancun

Nothing will beat the white Smurfette dress she wore to the premiere of the first Smurf movie, but we’re still impressed with Katy Perry’s sartorial dedication to the film the second time around too. Katy has still been getting her Smurf on while promoting the second installment of the feel-good animated film in Cancun. We know that the singer can rock the blue like a pro – remember her blue hair? – and it looks like she can also work the shade in more subtle forms too as she donned not one or even two, but three chic and beautiful dresses for the promotional events. KP firstly went all chic and grown-up on us in a gorgeous lace Monique Lhuillier creation, and added a floral headpiece and some quirky glasses to give it a bit of Katy Perry edge. She also embraced the blaring sun that Cancun is blessed with by rocking a blue and white summer dress, which she accessorised with a colorful headband and Dolce and Gabbana earrings. (Thankfully not the same pair that cause a bit of a racial controversy last year… phew!) And lastly when the sun went down, Katy opted for a metallic dress that we bet really got the party started. In short – we loved each and every look and have every faith that there will be more Smurf-tastic outfits to come in the not-so-distant future, so keep your eyes peeled! Which of the three looks is your fave? [Image]

Festival Fashion for Summer Fun!

As Britain shifts into the spring months, the summer festival season is nearly upon us! Whether you are a regular attendee of Shambala, Sonisphere, Download, V, Reading and other festivals around the UK, you will probably remember the big mud fields last year. We are all keeping our fingers crossed in 2013 for glorious sunshine. However, you should better be prepared for the unpredictable British weather – just in case – whilst staying on trend with these festival fashion ideas… 90’s revival Great news, 90’s fashion is back! This welcome trend not only allows you to revel in nostalgia but this fashion decade was also practical with warm and durable pieces, which are now perfect for a week or weekend of camping! Key pieces include warming checked shirts, dungarees, and cargo trousers. This versatile trend also allows you to express your grungier side with leather jackets, oversized sunglasses, denim and baggy jumpers or go more feminine with crop tops and miniskirts. A good leather jacket will become a valuable investment which will last for years and will also come in handy at any time of the year. You can pick up a lot of grunge pieces with added tassels which was a big spring/summer catwalk trend this year. Floral Try this fun trend from head to toe as seen on the catwalks and celebs this year with long flowing dresses for sunny, lazy afternoons in camp. Alternatively, a short summer dress will keep you cool whilst still being functional and quick to put on in the morning. Layer a floral dress with long sleeved tops and jumpers for cooler evenings. Alternatively, why not wear jazzy floral wellies or boots for fashionable yet durable footwear? Team a floral look with lots of scarves and Contemporary Jewellery as seen at Kenzo and […]

Hot fashion tips for your summer holiday

[noskim] If you’re a shrinking violet fond of muted tones and understated designs, it’s time to break out and embrace a new world of bold, bright, statement pieces. This year is all about confident, sassy styles, so read on. Headgear Protect your precious skin and conceal those tresses with a chic, wide-brimmed hat. Choose an oversized, floppy straw hat and you’ll be right on trend. Sunglasses There are a million and one styles to choose from – this summer why not try mirrored aviators, 1960s style retro frames, coloured or floral rims? Beachwear and swimwear Three cheers for the one-piece – it’s back and it suits just about any figure. The bandeau is also big this summer and is great for smaller-busted women. Choose a swimsuit in a block colour, floral or tropical print, then fling on a floaty, sheer kaftan with an embellished neckline for a spot of glamour and tuck your beach belongings into a trendy tote. Statement dress The maxi dress is here to stay, which is good news as no holiday wardrobe is complete without one. Elegant and versatile, a simple maxi dress is ideal for everything from beachside lounging and daytime outings, to sunset strolls and cocktail quaffing. Sweeping fabrics, bold colours and floral prints scream femininity and style. Sundress A cotton sundress is a must for any summer holiday and is sure to have you looking and feeling cool. Stripes are everywhere this season and never go out of fashion, so invest in a nautical striped sundress and you’re likely to wear it year after year. Playsuit A great alternative to dresses, playsuits are fun and stylish. Throw one over your bikini or swimsuit for a touch of poolside pizzazz. Shorts Present those pins in a pair of super-short shorts. They’ll be useful on […]

Eva Mendes is the new face (and eyes) of Vogue Eyewear

Kate Moss did a cracking job of modelling Vogue Eyewear, so you might think it would be hard for her replacement to live up to expectations… but not when her replacement is none other than Eva Mendes! Eva was shot by Mario Testino in a gorgeous West Hollywood setting for the spring/summer 2013 campaign images, and is oozing glamour, elegance and all-round sexiness in each and every pic. “I really love glasses,” Eva said.  “Whether they are prescription glasses or sunglasses, they are an extension of your personality and such a fantastic accessory I love to mix and match and play with different looks, depending on my mood and my outfit. “My favourites are frames that have a slightly retro feel, specifically a little wink to the 50s, 60s or 70s. I’ve only recently had to have prescription eyeglasses, and honestly, I love it!” We would too if we had all those fabulous frames to choose from! Do you like Eva’s campaign? [Sassi Sam]

Appreciating accessories in all their glory…

While a dog is a man’s best friend, we all know that diamonds are indeed a girl’s best friend – but that’s not where it ends. We ladies love anything that razzles and dazzles, and we don’t just mean literally. Yes we love a good diamond or crystal, but accessories in general make us very happy bunnies as they let us chop and change our outfits and overall looks with ease and effortlessness. And it means that we don’t have to break the bank and invest in an entirely new wardrobe if we want to mix things up for one day. We all know that a different pair of shoes can make, break and change an outfit, as can pretty much any other accessory out there. Accessories are usually chosen to specifically complement a look as well as complete it. They are broadly classified into two – the first of which: the ones that we carry. These include hand fans, canes, parasols, umbrellas, swords (a bit extreme but you can never rule anything out) and of course our old faithfuls, handbags. The second class refers to those accessories that are worn, which means everything from boots and shoes, ties, jackets, hats, cravats, gloves, belts, muffs, jewellery, shawls, sun glasses, stockings, socks, bonnets, scarves and watches. Phew – do let us know if we missed anything out. Out of all the things we mentioned, the most commonly carried accessory is of course the handbag. Why wouldn’t it be when the likes of Mulberry, Hermes, Coach, Chanel, Miu Miu, Chloe and more fabulous brands make some of the most stunning pieces of arm candy in the world, eh? Unlike handbags though, footwear is considered more of a necessity as opposed to a compulsion. The shoe is not only a great accessory to […]

The Essential Checklist For Cruise Holidays

[noskim] Unsure about where to go for your next holiday? No longer seen as the last refuge for the older generation wanting to travel – the cruise holiday is a great option for your yearly jaunt! However, if you are new to cruise holidays, it can be a little difficult to know exactly what you should be taking….it’s not like there are any designer outlets out on the ocean that you can pick up a bikini or a pair of sunnies from…so here is your essential check list to ensure you’re not left stranded at sea. Sunglasses It sounds obvious but it goes without saying that you’ll need a good pair of shades on holiday. You’re going to be in the sun for the majority of your daytime ship-bound time, so ones with a strong protection rating are essential. Shorts Ensure you take a few pairs of shorts, because you’re going to want to tan those legs. A nice pair of vintage wash denims would go quite nicely as you’re admiring the ocean view. The Passport Very important, as certain ports visited might involve you spending the day off-ship. Make sure you always take your passport, whether you are stopping or not. It’s just common sense! Footwear As mentioned, there’s a chance that you can spend a day wandering a port town whilst the ship restocks. This means that your choice of footwear is important. If you are going to be walking quite a bit, it’s wise to invest in a nice pair of sandals, Greek style. Comfortable, yet stylish. Evenings spent in the bars and restaurants might require a little more flair. Which is why you can impress with some high heeled shoes, which look great and won’t kill the feet. Swimwear You are on the water, so a […]

Channel the celebs and accessorise your eyes with coloured contact lenses!

Accessorising doesn’t end with a sexy pair of shoes or some delicious arm candy, oh no. Changing the colour of your eyes is all the rage in celebville right now, and not just for Halloween! We’ve seen the celebs regularly sport different coloured eyes in the fashion glossies, but coloured contact lenses are the best way to go about it without someone some post-production Photoshopping. Some famous faces love their coloured contacts so much that their natural eye colours might surprise you! Did you know that the newly-engaged Jennifer Aniston actually has brown eyes, but swears by her blue contact lenses to complement her blonde hair and bronzed skin tone? Drew Barrymore disguises her naturally blue eyes with a sultry set of brown contact lenses, which we reckon makes the rest of her gorgeous features stand out even more.  Penelope Cruz looks stunning regardless of what she wears on her body, face, feet and eyes, but we can definitely see why she prefers her green contact lenses; juxtaposed with her gorgeous Mediterranean features, she stands out even more than usual! So, when you’re planning your outfit for your next big party, don’t forget your eyes! If you’re going somewhere kitsch and quirky, don a pair of oversized glasses – geek chic has never been hotter. If you want to make your aquatic dress do all the talking, tone down your piercing blue eyes with some subtle brown contacts so all the attention remains on your dress or if you want something more permanent you can get eye laser surgery and show off your big beautiful eyes! The choices are practically endless!

Fun, glamorous autumn/winter pieces at Wallis!

Yesterday we headed to Arcadia HQ to check out what fab new clothes, shoes and accessories Wallis had in store for us for the autumn/winter 2012 season, and have to admit that we left with a wish-list as long as both arms combined. Great for Wallis and Britain, (which is reportedly no longer recession-hit, wahoo!) but bad news for our bank accounts. There’s an abundance of fun and glamorous jumpers available, which would be great to wear over the Christmas holidays over anything from skin-tight leather leggings to cute pencil skirts and more. Everyone needs some sparkle in the winter months! The coats are also particularly striking this season too, with lots of faux fur pieces that are a surefire way to get you noticed. And don’t even get us started on the Christmas party dresses and ultra-sparkly, attention-grabbing accessories! We even got to take part in a fun photoshoot with some of our favourite pieces and some very cute props (I personally had to go for the bold red lips and Kanye West style glasses – couldn’t resist!). What do you think of the gorgeous oversized black and white print coat? That’s definitely a piece of clothing that will keep out the winter chill! Head to Wallis right now to check out the rest of the new-season pieces and get your credit and debit cards lined up!

First look at the Katie Grand for Hogan collaboration!

Saying that we love a good collaboration is a bit of an understatement, so we don’t even need to tell you how thrilled we were when we heard that Love magazine’s editor-in-chief Katie Grand would be teaming up with Hogan for a special capsule collection. Katie’s debut collection is entitled ‘Gang by Hogan’, and features some bright, vivid and very colourful accessories, including high-top trainers with a subtle wedge in them, slippers, sunglasses, bags and more. Remember that time Cheryl Cole wore some wedge trainers and we all went a bit wild for them? Well we reckon the colourful Katie Grand for Hogan ones are the cutest ones we have seen to date, and you can bet your bottom Dollar that we’ll be snapping them up when they go on sale next year. Katie Grand has enlisted the help of 14 top models, including the likes of Cara Delevingne, Alessandra Ambrosio, Edie Campbell, Dree Hemingway and Linda Evangelista to model the pieces, so keep your eyes peeled for their pics in a special one-off publication dedicated to the collection. The Gang collection hits Hogan stores in January 2013… which pieces are you lusting after?

Milan Fashion Week SS13 highlights – Part 2

We know it’s early days as we still have the rest of Milan Fashion Week and the whole of Paris Fashion Week to look forward to, but we are declaring Moschino one of our favourite collections of the season (so far). Moschino presented somewhat of a “space-age meets sixties and seventies” collection, with more colourful, floral, vivid pieces than you can shake a stick at. The collection went from one extreme to the other in terms of colour (or lack thereof) as in amongst the bright floral pieces were chic monochrome ones that would be totally at home in Karl Lagerfeld’s personal wardrobe. It was also all about the flower power and complex cuts and silhouettes for Prada’s spring/summer 2013 catwalk outing too. The collection appears to have been relatively Japanese inspired if the kitsch, cute, elevated floral embellishments on the garments, silk kimono-style pieces and geisha-red lips on the models are anything to go by. And on a separate note, how Iris Apfel are those glasses on the third model above? Amazing! We’re not too sure where the metallic socks fit in though. A predominantly monochrome colour palette with a bit of bold red thrown in for good measure – how can you go wrong with something so timeless and classic?! Today is a busy day for the Italian fashionistas, as the likes of Versace, Versus and Just Cavalli will be showing their spring/summer 2013 offerings so stay tuned for more updates!

London Fashion Week SS13: Day 5

Yep, it’s the final day of London Fashion Week (sniff), and as the old saying goes, some of the best shows were saved til last… especially when referring to the Mulberry show that kicked off at 10am this morning! Those of you following us on Twitter will have already seen a few cheeky pictures that we took of the collection, the celebs, the gnomes (yes, there were gnomes), the complimentary rainbow cakes and even an adorable Mulberry-clad dog we met in the queue called Berry! However, now it’s time to get up close and a little more personal with the collection, as we’ve selected a few of our stand-out looks for you to gaze at below. We also attended the Ashish show this afternoon, which we thought was a perfect ending to a wonderful spring/summer 2013 season in London. Who: Mulberry What: Rainbows, watercolours – an “English summer” at its best. There was a bit of a mix on the Mulberry catwalk this season; we had a feeling we were going to get a colourful collection from the paint set invite, but it was a tasteful, refreshing bit of colour as opposed to something more wild and overbearing like in some of the collections we’ve seen this LFW. (That’s not to say we didn’t like them, au contraire we love a good burst of colour, but we love Emma Hill’s balance.) There was an abundance of leather in the collection, as well as relaxed shapes and silhouettes – perfect for summer! We saw new visions for the classic Alexa and Del Rey bags, and Mulberry also launched the Willow collection, which we’ll tell you more about at a later date. Highlight: We had the Mulberry Monster last season, and while we don’t think anything will top him, the little – […]

5 stylish accessories every woman should own!

Outfit ‘gellers’, closet completers, or wardrobe ‘uniters’: however you prefer to address them, stylish accessories are the cornerstone of an accomplished wardrobe. Fashionably educated women understand that breathtaking looks are perfectly fine and all, but stepping out sans apt accessories to complement an outfit is, well, pretty much like stepping out naked, really! OK, so this may sound extreme, but it holds true that accessories are often responsible for drawing the eyes of fashion conscious onlookers to a particular person’s style. (That conversation-starting clutch; the gasp-inducing, fashion editor-huddling statement necklace, anyone?) Fashion Week street style photography is testament to this, as are the mounting numbers of pages dedicated solely to accessories that are popping up in our favourite glossies. So, what does the perfect accessory-drobe consist of? On-trend, limelight stealing knickknacks (cue: Anna Dello Russo’s accessory-dripping appearances during Fashion Month), or a tightly edited collection of classic go-to pieces you heavily rely on when an outfit needs a little edge? Bring yourself back from accessory free-fall with our quick guide to 5 stylish accessories every woman well versed in the world of fashion should own. 1. The All-purpose Sunnies No discerning style maven is without her sunnies, be it rain or shine! No longer the preserve of sunny days, sunglasses are toys for grown ups, and so the more fun had with these, the better! Opt for a classic, all-rounder shape in a fun hue for sunnies that add instant glam to an off-duty look. House of Harlow Robyn round-frame acetate sunglasses, £110 £55, available at The Outnet 2. The Classic Bag This classic style tote is the perfect outfit hopper. Flitting between chic and functional; the roomy interior, detachable shoulder strap and minimal hardware detailing means you’ll carry your life’s contents on your arm (or shoulder) without compromising a single ounce of style. Emma’s jeans and booties are actually both from Rag & Bone, but you don’t have to splash that much cash to get her basic look. Especially if you’re going to invest in that gorgeous piece of arm candy! We think you’ll be pleased with our alternative suggestions… Cinnamon Silverton traveller, $695, available at Michael Kors Blue skinny jeans, £80, Wrangler available at Zalando White washed t-shirt, £5.99, available at New Look Wayfarer sunglasses, £106, Ray Ban available at Style Passport Brown ankle boots, £69.95, Esprit available at Zalando [Image]

Victoria Beckham designs her own specs range

You’d think Victoria Beckham had enough on her plate already, wouldn’t you? After all, she is a mother of four who is not only busy preparing for fashion week next month, but now also has a Spice Girls Olympics Closing Ceremony performance to focus on too. Ever the multi-tasker though, Queen VB has taken on another project – designing her very own range of spectacles. Her reasoning behind the collection was relatively simple – and personal – as she created the range to cater to her own needs. “I haven’t found glasses that suit me or that I particularly like,” she told WWD .”I’ve always been quite self-conscious about this, so that’s why I’ve decided to do them myself.” A valid reason if ever there was one. “I will be wearing my glasses now, and it will be nice to see where I will be going for once,” she said. Victoria teamed up with Cutler & Gross to design the six-piece collection of glasses. They come in varied styles, from heavy square shapes which suit both men and women to light aviator variations, and all come with a diamanté-faceted ‘V’. Sounds pretty cool! What do you think of the sneak preview below? [Telegraph]

Five of the best stylish destinations for the fashion conscious

Holidays for some can be simply lying in the sun, taking part in some sort of sporting activity or even doing some volunteering but for others it’s a chance to shop somewhere new for something special. We’ve selected five of the best destinations from around the globe for all things fashion. Book flights and accommodation at great prices with www.directline-holidays.co.uk. 1. New York New York! Although the exchange rate is not what it once was, you can still make some massive savings on designer and high street goods on the other side of the pond. Invest in some quality American tailoring with classic shirts and chinos from Ralph Lauren’s stunning flagship menswear store on Madison Avenue featuring made to measure services and a ‘create-your-own polo shirt’ outpost. Getting your shoes shined is a must for any New York tourist; visit legendary Don at 47th and 6th between News Corp and NHL headquarters for the best shoe shine in town. Don’s past clients have included Rod Stewart, Martin Luther King, Jr., Karl Rove and Chris Rock. 2. Va va voom – Paris There’s a certain ‘je ne sais quoi’ to the classic French way of dressing seen in Parisian streets so it makes perfect sense to shop in the stores the locals do to emulate our Francophile friends. L’Eclaireur on Rue de Sévigné is a menswear boutique bursting with the latest designer goods in a shop that could be as much described as an art installation with over 147 screens and sweeping floor to ceiling wooden sculptures. Another must see boutique is ‘Colette’ located near the Louvre, a multi floored store not only selling high end designer and cutting edge up and coming brands but also gadgets, jewellery and techno accessories. 3. When in Rome… or Milan Italians bring their unique […]

With so many people flocking in and out of London to attend or avoid the Olympic Games, the airports are going to be busier than ever. And we all know that busy means hectic and rather stressful! So, with that in mind, the last thing you want to worry about is balancing on your six-inch platforms or not being able to sit down in your skin-tight jeans. Therefore, comfort really is key here, and who better to seek style inspiration from than everyone’s favourite resident LA girl Ashley Tisdale? Some casual white trousers, a loose-fitted tunic (in a very summery shade of orange, of course), some cool flip-flops with a bit of bling and some sunglasses (to avoid those pesky paps, natch) are all you need to channel the Tiz and travel in comfort and style. Couldn’t be simpler! Victoria Beckham rocks her own designs at Wimbledon

Kate Middleton wasn’t the only royal to lend her support to Andy Murray at Wimbledon yesterday. Fashion royalty Victoria Beckham also sat pretty (and pouting, natch) in the Royal Box with hubby David Beckham at her side. She rocked her trademark oversized black sunglasses, a chic, sleek and voluminous ponytail, and of course, a look from her latest ready-to-wear collection. VB wore a green and black stripe dress from her autumn/winter 2012 collection paired with some knee-high leather boots that she can’t seem to get enough of (our money’s on the Tom Ford ones!) and a black bag also from her collection which she carried as a clutch. Even though this look is very predictable, it doesn’t make it any less fabulous. Having said that however, we’d like to see Posh experiment with her style a bit more. We guess we’ll start seeing some new dress styles once her new-season collection debuts on the runway in a few months, but if she mixed it up before then we’d be very happy bunnies indeed! Five minutes with Style Passport’s Sarah Walter

Catering to our style and beauty needs for staycations, spa breaks and beach holidays and a whole lot more, by cherry picking products from ‘high/low’ fashion and beauty brands, Style Passport is the go-to destination for stylish holiday essentials. My Fashion Life caught up with the lady behind it all, Sarah Walter, who after starting a placement at British Vogue the same day Anna Wintour started at the magazine, and holding senior positions at Marie Claire, and Harpers, decided to set up Style Passport out of a ‘lifelong dream.’ Meet the woman who’s done it all… How did the idea to set up a specific platform like Style Passport come about? Style Passport is the culmination of my careers in magazines and then retail, combined with my huge passion for travel and adventure. Name three holiday spots you regularly visit and why. Our Cottage in the Brecon Beacons in Wales as often as I can to walk, garden and spend quality time with my family and friends. Baros in the Maldives which is the most perfect tiny island I have ever visited, with the best fish life I have ever seen, and New York. A friend said her only regret in life is she cannot visit New York for the first time again, I agree. If you could live anywhere in the world, where would that be? I’m getting keener and keener on California, the lifestyle is very appealing all that delicious food and wine and the drives…… Three things I never travel (abroad) without are… My iPhone for music, maps and note taking, a huge pair of sunglasses (currently loving Linda Farrow giant pink shades) to feel glamorous, protect me from the sun and to disguise jet lagged eyes. And finally a scarf which can be a wrap, towel, skirt, head wrap and […]

Midweek Moodboard: Barbie pink a’ la Blake Lively

This is most definitely not cheating, and the “must stop blogging about every single item Blake Lively is wearing on her Savages promo tour” goal we set ourselves isn’t proving difficult at all, honest. Shifty eyes… Ok, we admit that we’ve been besotted with Blake Lively’s wardrobe recently, but one look we didn’t manage to rant and rave about which we feel deserves extra attention was her hot pink Lanvin one! We’ve always regarded Blake as a bit of a Barbie, with her blonde locks, legs that go on for decades and very ample, generous chest.  So, seeing her in a hot pink Barbie ready-ensemble was the icing on the cake. We want some Blake/Barbie in our lives too, so we’ve selected some pieces that should help us get one step closer to our plastic fantastic childhood best friend. Here goes… Team Barbie vest, £22, available at Miss Selfridge Hot pink oversize sunglasses, £16, available at Topsbop Cascade chiffon dress, £196.50, Raoul available at Farfetch Pink pearl bangle, £3.99, available at AX Paris Pink racer-back dress, £104, McQ available at Alexander McQueen Bow back playsuit, £10, available at Miss Selfridge Pink peep toe heels, £90, Dune available at Zalando [Image]

Five Minutes with…Marni.com director, Carolina Castiglioni

With major fashion houses gravitating towards an impressive online presence, we talked to a particular fashion name whose aesthetic is dear to the hearts of many, and an eye-opening, innovative online presence that demands its own, rather fashionable, overseer. My Fashion Life caught up with Director of Marni.com, Carolina Castiglioni, to discuss holiday packing, beauty staples and ideal outfits. What is your typical working day like? Very hectic but organised. I have a 7 month old baby! At the moment I work half a day, only. Three wardrobe staples you cannot live without? Masculine socks, flat sandals, a special necklace or the new bag of the season. If there was one place you could choose to live for the rest of your life, where would it be and why? Milan: my home city. I could not imagine any other place; here I am surrounded by my family and my friends. Tell us a little more about the concept behind ANTICAMERA? Last September we decided to complete Marni.com, creating a unique website with our vision, that includes both shopping and information on the brand with the aim to give a better understanding of Marni. ANTICAMERA is a quarterly online magazine related to Marni.com. Every issue is a project of its own, changing layout, content and navigation. We choose a subject linked to Marni and develop its content. Important aspects to Marni.com are the collaborations with emerging or known artists; the key element of these collaborations is the exchange of ideas between Marni and the artist, working together on a project. The aim of the magazine is to give an inside perspective and a more intimate approach. Beauty staples you swear by? A good and long sleep and my moisturising cream Being the head of internet strategy for Marni.com, tell us a […]

Rate or Slate Zoe Saldana, Cheryl and Jaime King’s fashion finery?

For this week’s Rate or Slate, Zoe Saldana, Cheryl and Jaime King have come under the Style Jury’s unforgiving fashion microscope! Zoe opted out of a dress at the Persol Magnificent Obsession: 30 Stories of Craftsmanship in Film event, instead going for a Louis Vuitton pre-fall 2012 embellished sweater and cropped green pants combo. Louis Vuitton cap-toe pumps completed her look. The ‘Nation’s Sweetheart’ may have been in hibernation for a while, but she’s back with a vengeance, and minus a certain philandering ex-husband’s surname. Preferring to be known only as ‘Cheryl’ going forward, the Geordie beauty opted for a Ksubi dress and matching Charlotte Olympia heels. This one’s definitely an on-the-fence outfit for us! Jaime King also attended the Persol Magnificent Obsession: 30 Stories of Craftsmanship in Film event in a fizzy Peter Pilotto spring/summer 2012 number. Rather aptly accessorising with sunglasses (after all, it is Persol), we’re still trying to figure out if Jaime’s aquatic style is really making waves… And on that note, it’s over to the Style Jury. Fashion News Ed says: Zoe Saldana: ‘Zoe gets top marks for effort. We know she is capable of looking sublime in a cute dress but I like her experimentation with bold prints, colour and opting to wear something out of her comfort zone. A celeb is always going to get brownie points from me when they wear something in the trouser department, and Zoe is no exception. Fave!’ Cheryl: ‘I have been in two minds over this one since I first set eyes on it… love the dress, I think the style totally flatters Cheryl’s frame and adheres to her relatively experimental style but still not sure about whether the matchy-matchy shoes were the best choice. Where’s her penchant for luminous footwear or indeed Kate Middleton’s nude L.K […]

The must-have list for fashionable mums-to-be!

We’ve had a whole host of recent celebrity pregnancies and newbie mums who have brought a whole new meaning to ‘yummy mummy.’ Take Beyoncé, for example, who looked every inch the princess of pregnancy while she was expecting daughter Blue Ivy. Her maternity style was just as mind-blowing as her bootylicious stage outfits – OK, maybe not as eccentric, but who can forget that orange Lanvin gown at the 2011 VMA’s and all the lustworthy print and heels she wore during her pregnancy! Hilary Duff is another example of ‘maternity chic’ at it’s best, as the 24-year-old starlet was seen in nothing less than bright blazers, killer heels and snap-worthy sunglasses throughout her pregnancy with baby Luca! Well, for all you expectant mums out there, pick up a style tip or two from your A-list bump-carrying counterparts, and check out the fabulous maternity range at Isabella Oliver – Kristin Cavallari, pictured above in the Ruched Tank Dress, is a big fan! With everything from stylish dresses to comfortable loungewear and jackets, the maternity collection will ensure you remain fashionably kitted out during your pregnancy. Whoever said having children meant sacrificing style?

Five basic essentials for the perfect hen party!

Apart from spending the rest of your life with your wonderful groom and feeling like a princess on the big day itself, you girls know the best thing about getting married is actually the hen night. It’s the last time you can cut loose with the girls and have an uninhibited whale of a time. So, for all you maids of honour who have a hen night to plan, we’ve hand-picked five essential items that your hen night couldn’t possibly do without. No boys allowed! 1. A Bride to Be cowboy hat You definitely need a Bride to Be cowboy hat and veil so everyone knows who the woman of the hour is going to be. You don’t want her getting all Bridezilla if she’s not getting the most attention. Plus, there’s plenty of innuendo and conversation starters with a cowboy hat in the mix… 2. Shot glasses Pre-hen night drinks are definitely in order, but you don’t want the bride and the rest of the girls to be filling up on cocktails before heading out the door. (You know what they say about breaking the seal too early…) Therefore, shots are obligatory, and nothing will get the party started better than shot glasses (neon preferably). 3. Dare cards Ladies night hen party dare cards are another hen night essential – what we love most about dare cards in particular is their micro-size. It means you can carry on the embarrassing dares well into the evening. No one will ever know! 4. Diamante hen party transfers Whatever the theme for the hen party is, you can’t go wrong with diamante hen party transfers as they can be ironed on to pretty much anything. Unless it’s a totally nude theme, in which case we recommend storing the iron somewhere safe and […]

Summer Style

When the heat is on, it can sometimes seem tricky to stay stylish. However, there are plenty of summer trends this year which will allow you to keep cool and stay stylish this coming season. Here are just a few looks which you might consider… One of the easiest ways to keep ahead of the trend this season is with accessories! It may be too warm to pile on the layers, but it’s the perfect weather for sunglasses and summer caps. If you’re keen to keep your clothing simple, then throwing on a pair of fashion-forward sunglasses can be an easy way to add style to any apparel. If you’ve forgotten to book in at Rush London, or other such hairdressers, for a new summer hairstyle, then why not don a hat instead? With designers keen to channel the ’90s this season, chunky caps are set to be everywhere – the perfect way to keep cool and stay stylish. Sportswear is also a key look this year, and an easy way to prevent getting hot and sticky in even the warmer weather. Lightweight technical fabrics in bright colours offer a convenient way to steer clear of sweat whilst still paying homage to the bright months. If you’re keen to wear shorts, then stick to paler shades, or bright prints, in order to achieve much the same effect. If you need to be suited and booted throughout the year, then there are a number of ways in which this, too, can be achieved. Unlined jackets have made something of a comeback, offering a lightweight alternative to the traditional blazer. Soft-tailoring has been favoured on the catwalks this season in a trend which is more than likely to make its way onto the high street by summer – ideal looking smart and […]

The Festival Fashion Checklist – it’s all you need!

After the green-eyed monster got the better of us whilst pouring over pictures of super-bod celebrities at sunny Coachella, kitted out in the hottest festival garb and making merry to the sounds of Swedish House Mafia and a hologram of Tupac, we’ve now got to consider preparing for our own modestly sunny versions. That’s right, its festival season, and we’re not about to let the dipping barometer bring crashing down our hopes of an amazing, and possibly sun-soaked festival experience! Alongside the festival essentials (no, not alcohol or insomnia) you’ve got to pack a head-turning-yet-practical wardrobe. And that’s where we can help, because we’ve geared up the best of festival fashion necessities, come rain or shine – the latter, we hope! Whether you’re Latitude lass, most likely to be raving your way through the crowds at Lovebox Weekender or a hardcore Isle of Wight festival faithful, or, maybe you’re heading further afield and showingBarcelonahow it’s done at Sonar, or probably eccentrically dancing with the festival goers at Exitfest inSerbia– we’ve got it covered. Opt for a water-resistant, quirky, printed parka to stylishly keep dry, or, maybe a denim waistcoat for sunnier climes. A fringed edge on everything is law at festivals, as are fashion-forward Wellington boots. As for handbag hoarders, leave the Hermès at home and stick with an Aztec printed rucksack! Take inspiration from our top picks below and start ticking off your festival fashion checklist! Check out the headline-making festivals taking place in 2012, here.   1.
