5 Must-Have Fall Fashion Staples

As summer winds down and we begin to put our tank tops and shorts away, it’s time to evaluate our fall fashion staples. From boots to outerwear, the following five must-have fall staples are ones you need to keep in your closet. 1. Wool Blazers Nothing says fall more than a stylish wool blazer. You can wear a hip-length tweed blazer made of soft wool with jeans, a turtleneck cashmere sweater, and straight-leg jeans tucked into tall boots for a classic country fall look.  For tall women, wearing a wool blazer with a shorter hemline that hits just above the hips can help to create a lean look. Pair this style of wool blazer with a wool skirt that falls just above the knees with short ankle boots for an elegant ensemble. 2. Boots You can’t have enough styles of boots for fall. You’ll need ankle boots to pair with jeans, leggings, and short dresses; tall boots to wear with knee-length A-line skirts and straight-leg jeans; and combat-inspired boots to wear with maxi dresses and black jeans.  If you’re a tall woman, stick to small square-heeled boots, ones with a kitten heel, or flat-soled boots so that you don’t add extra height to your tall frame. 3. Sweaters Sweaters define fall fashion. You’ll want several styles of sweaters in your wardrobe, from casual cotton pullovers to classy cashmere cardigans. When choosing sweaters for your fall collection, look for bright colors for fun fall events and neutral-colored ones for more upscale gatherings.  If you have a tall frame, look for sweaters with the proper sleeve length and aren’t too boxy unless you’re going for an urban chic look. 4. Dark Jeans You want to have dark jeans in colors such as black, indigo, or dark gray as part of your fall […]

8 Ways to Transition Your Wardrobe from Summer to Autumn

If you love fashion as much as us, you probably get utterly giddy at the thought of the changing seasons. Sure, it’s a little stressful trying to figure out how to go from 90 degrees and blistering to a cool 65 (sometimes in the span of a week), but it’s totally worth it when you think about all the fun wardrobe pieces you get to bust out after months of lying dormant. The jackets, the boots, the layers, layers and layers! Take this opportunity to flex your styling muscles and showcase your ability to slay the versatility game. Here are some of our favorite tips for how to do it seamlessly. Create a Year–Round Capsule—Our best piece of advice for creating a versatile year-round wardrobe is this: Build a strong foundation with the goal of making it work for 12 months of the year. The basics include a few pairs of trendy jeans, some leather or suede boots, a few quality T-shirts and a couple of investment-worthy layering staples, like a denim jacket and some wool or cashmere sweaters. When you have a solid bank from which to draw, you won’t be scrambling to pull together season-specific looks when the weather starts to change.  Invest in a Pair of Cropped Jeans—If you haven’t noticed, the denim trend de jure is all cropped, all day, and we are positively living for it, especially since it has a uniquely transitional benefit when season-straddling. We adore this trend because it allows you to create fun summery looks with without the obvious shorts or dresses. Oh, and bonus: Cropped jeans have the cool ability to be laid-back but also highly tailored, so they’re supremely versatile for both sleek office looks and fun weekend getups. Plus, they work well in any season when styled with […]

How to Transition Summer Pieces into Fall

Unless you’re independently wealthy, there’s a good chance you don’t have the funds (or the energy, for that matter) to invest in a brand-new wardrobe every time the seasons change. But luckily, it doesn’t take a whole lot more than some creativity and vision to style your favorite wardrobe staples so they work year-round. Chances are you’ve already got a few essential items that look right at home both at a bonfire and a barbecue, so don’t write off your summer faves the minute the pumpkin spice lattes roll around. Pick Your Most Versatile Pieces Sure, we all have those bright and fun pieces that are reserved exclusively for summer ensembles, but then we have those anytime styles that shine bright year-round. Your summer-to-fall strategy should include denim at every length (even shorts, ankle-length jeans and capris), a couple of cute button-ups, some basic tees and ample jackets. It helps if you get in the mindset of shopping for adaptability. We’re not saying that you should shop basic, but instead that you should look for patterns, colors, materials and cuts that are easy to layer and adjust to the season. If you need advice figuring out where to start with regard to versatility, consider transitioning to a capsule wardrobe rather than filling your closet with all statement pieces. Layer Like a Boss Rule number one of transitional style: Say yes to the vest. We mean this metaphorically of course, but seriously, a quilted monogram vest is probably not going to let you down in late summer and early fall, no matter how you style it. When the temps start to cool off, transition your favorite tees and tanks from steal-the-show statements to basic base layers to lay the foundation for multi-season style. The same light jackets you wore boating and […]

This year, dark blues with white prints, such as birds or simple plants and ferns, are the order of the day. A printed backpack, or even printed trainers, are a more subtle way to work the trend. 3. Steep vs. Cheap: High Street heel wars

Sandals are a case for the best pedicures, and just a damn good excuse to ban all socks-and-boots pairings from our wardrobes. You can’t fool us, sky! This week, tempting us to twinkle-toe our way into a culotte and cropped top ensemble are these pretty heeled sandals. And guess what? Both the steep and cheap versions are high street finds! If you’re guilty (well, actually, let’s call it ahead of time) of fast forwarding your wardrobe, already pinching summer staples and mixing them in with your Blighty-proof style; we don’t blame you. And, when you land your peepers on these white-washed sandals, with just the right amount of polished detailed to take them from under a smart office look to a summer cocktail soirée, it’ll be tough to resist whipping the plastic out. Making us dream up minimal, summery outfits is the Kiss sandal from high street favourite, Kurt Geiger. The two-strap sandal features a sturdy block heel and turn lock ankle fastening, and screams out to be paired with an A-line midi skirt in the softest of pastel lilacs. Tempted? Shop the steep option right here (we promise it won’t really break the bank): Carvela Kurt Geiger Kiss sandals, £85. But, if forking out £15 short of your fortnightly travel allowance on hardly weatherproof shoes leaves you feeling a little nervous, we’ve tracked down a much more cost effective option. Take your boot-clad self to Topshop, and pick up an equally fashion status-boosting style for a fraction of the price. Sorted. Go on, you know they’re meant for your shoe collection: Topshop Heartbreaker heeled sandals, £28.

10 of the best trends of 2012

We can’t believe 2012 is drawing to a close so fast, and with festive prep in full blast, we’ve taken out a little time to help you reflect on the trends that defined the runways of 2012. From ornate embellishment to luxe leather; gym gear gone glam to shirtless collars – 2012 brought several lasting pieces and styles to our wardrobes. To refresh your memory, as next season creeps upon the ever-moving world of fashion, here’s to a trip down trend memory lane to refresh your fashion mindset, and cleanse the mental palate to make way for next season’s stunning wares. Sports luxe: Olympic fever gripped the globe this year, and with so much fitness apparel, fine abs and Tom Daley in full view, designers couldn’t help but take gym gear up a few chic notches; off the treadmill and straight onto the runway(with a few modifications, obvs). Embellishment: The SS’12 shows marked the beginning of our obsession with festooning everything from cardis to clutches and slippers to socks. Even for a/w’12, Lanvin and Balmain delivered heavy smatterings of crystals and beading to their fashionable wares, whilst Christopher Kane’s embellished clutches and jeans became summer staples. We approved. Collars: Dismantling the shirt, a firm wardrobe staple, left us with a collar and free reign to do anything to it! What started out as a pretty and prim game of peek-a-boo atop cosy knits Alexa (yes, she) wore with dresses and shirts underneath became a full-blown global phenomenon. Encrusted with stones; crisp white; metallic; printed or Peter Pan versions, the collar did pretty well at pushing the statement necklace of its pedestal. Candy shades: Probably the biggest summer trend to slip into our wardrobes, pastel shades were everywhere! We blame the house of Louis Vuitton for getting us unhealthily hooked on shades of […]

As the weather transitions from hot to cold in the fall, it’s time to put away your summer clothes and bring out your cozy sweaters, long sleeves, and warm jackets. Put your winter clothes away when the winter chill gives way to spring’s warmth, and break out your light, bright spring and summer clothes. Follow this comprehensive guide to make your seasonal wardrobe change as seamless and stress-free as possible! 1. Categorize and Organize Your Closet Next, thoroughly go through everything that remains in your wardrobe and thoughtfully organize your closet by clothing category – shirts, pants, dresses, sweaters, jackets, etc. Hanging or shelving […]

How To Make Your Wardrobe More Sustainable

You may not realise it, but the clothing you wear has a huge impact on the environment and can even contribute to unfair working conditions in developing countries.   But what can you do to make a change?  It’s not always easy to know how to make better choices with your clothing purchases and reduce your impact on the environment.  That’s why we’ve put together a list of ways you can contribute positively to the environment just by making a few changes to how you consume fashion.  Here we’ve listed ways you can make your wardrobe more sustainable.  1. Don’t Be Afraid To Swap Swapping clothes with friends is a great way to refresh your wardrobe without spending any money.  It also reduces the demand for new clothes and decreases the environmental impact of buying new items.  Just be sure to keep an eye out for anything that could damage or soil other pieces – stains and odours transfer so easily!  2. Invest in quality sustainable fashion brands  It’s so crucial that we invest our hard-earned money in brands that make their clothes from high-quality materials that are sourced ethically. This is because mass production of cheaply made clothing often causes an increase in global pollution and demands more water. That’s why we adore companies like Nordgreen, which aim for sustainability at every step of the manufacturing process. Nordgreen is a superb example of a sustainable fashion brand, from ensuring that working conditions are outstanding to always striving to reduce their environmental impact and allowing customers the option of donating a portion of their purchase to a cause of their choice. And with a growing number of sustainable fashion brands, offering stunning products like this collection of women’s watches from Nordgreen, it’s getting easier and easier to be both sustainable and […]

What Makes Something A Wardrobe Staple?

We often hear the word “wardrobe staples” being thrown around, and why it’s so important for our wardrobes that we have a few of them, but what is a staple? How can you identify a piece that can become one of the cornerstones of your closet, and what features elevate a piece of clothing to that hallowed status?  Many things make something a wardrobe staple, and the truth is, it can differ from person-to-person. You probably already have some staples in your wardrobe already, stuff that you consider important to putting together your stylish outfits. It’s probably even a few things because there are so many different ways a garment can be essential.  So how can you tell if something is a staple, whether you already own it or you’re shopping for it? Here are a few key identifiers… Something Versatile  The simplest and most basic form of a wardrobe staple is something that can serve multiple purposes and fit in with several different looks. In order for something to become a bread-and-butter piece in your clothing repertoire, it has to have the superpower of being something you are confident will work in many settings. For example with trousers, layered under a strappy dress, or complemented with a jacket or a blazer. This is what makes something essential and not just a random piece.  Examples of versatile pieces  A leather jacket: it works with just about any garment or look from pants to dresses A plain white shirt: can be dressed down and dressed up depending on what the occasion asks for  A flattering core pair of jeans: Whether the fit is skinny, straight, or flared, a reliable pair of denim is key to having a great wardrobe. A good pair of jeans for women comes in a wide array […]

Should You Learn to Cut Your Own Hair?

Getting your hair done is a relaxing experience. People will often schedule a cut to get some time away from home. But when should cutting your own hair take priority? Saving Money The hair salon is one of the most visited places in the world. There is something to please everyone whether it is for style, comfort, or company. But, cost-conscious households may consider home hair care as an alternative to a normal visit. This works in two different ways, with completely different outcomes.  Individuals that want to completely replace salon visits with home hair care will have the most difficult road. Instead of dealing with a small set of tools, you now have to convert your entire bathroom into a mini-salon. This process gets more and more expensive based on the styles you are most interested in. The second type of individual wants to use home hair care to supplement their regular visits to the salon. This is the best alternative, and saves you money without a heavy investment. Professionals will even provide tips for home hair care while recommending their favorite products.  The Skill Gap Cutting hair isn’t something that you learn overnight. Even if it is something simple, there are mistakes that can cause long-term damage to your hair. When you go a long time between appointments at a hair salon, it creates quite an interesting experience.  Your stylist has to correct errors from bad home-based care, or bad hair upkeep. Cutting split ends with no prior knowledge is a common thing from home-based care. Using the wrong shampoo and conditioner are staples of going for product branding rather than need.  Without hair care knowledge, you do more harm than good. In the long run, this costs you more money than it saves. A stylist is a […]

Wrap Up Warm In A Duvet Reminiscent Puffer Jacket

We’re not quite sure when it happened, but at some point the weather went from zero to hundred real quick. We’ll give it to summer, it hung on for dear life, for as long as it could. And then all of a sudden the temperature dropped and we’re now left wondering, where autumn went to?  Rather than enjoying cool autumnal breezes, it feels like we’re in the early stages of winter. And whereas usually when we’d use this time of year to show off our transitional outerwear, e.g blazers and oversized cardis, we’re now seriously considering busting out the heavy duty puffer jacket. Not that we’re complaining too much – being one of this season’s major staples, the puffer jacket has had a lovely makeover and it’s bigger and better than ever. As seen on the AW16 catwalks oversized puffer jackets were the norm…and there’s only one way to wear it – slightly off the shoulder as seen at Balenciaga and more recently on RiRi during Paris Fashion Week. Impractical? Yes. Sexy? Hell yes! And therein lies one of this season’s biggest fashion dilemmas – how to wear the puffer jacket while still remaining impeccably cool and collected as we navigate through our daily lives of commuting and school runs?! But hey, it’s “fashun”, we’ll work it out… In the meantime here are some slightly less oversized puffer jackets that’ll make braving the wintry winds, pure pleasure. Our top picks from the French Connection sale!

Packing your holiday suitcase or just adding new pieces to your spring/summer wardrobe can be pretty pricey, which is why we’d recommend taking advantage of the sale season and snapping up everything your hands can carry before someone else beats you to it. And one sale which never lets us down is the French Connection one which is happening online and in stores right now! Some of the season’s most-loved pieces from chic dresses to cute tops and much more have been slashed in price, ready for their brand new homes! We’ve been browsing the website all morning (and all weekend, if we’re honest) and have found three items which we definitely couldn’t live without. 1. Marble Pool Shirt. It’s all about stylish separates this season, and this shirt makes it very easy to mix and match with some of your pre-existing wardrobe staples. Team with a black pencil skirt and a chic jacket for the office, or with some bright trousers and statement necklace for an evening with the girls. It’s also the perfect office-to-bar piece; the styling and accessorising possibilities are virtually endless! 2. Bel Air Tweed Biker Jacket. This is the biker jacket to trump all other biker jackets. We love how the tough nature of a biker jacket is juxtaposed with the soft pink hue, and the refined tweed fabric makes it perfect for wearing on hotter days when a traditional leather jacket wouldn’t. 3. Belle Garden Shift Dress. The clue is in the title for this one. You really will be the belle of the ball (or summer party) in this stunning creation. Perfect for sipping cocktails on a beach bar on holiday or teaming with sky high heels and a fierce clutch bag for an evening of dancing a little later on in the […]

The penultimate day of New York Fashion Week was as action-packed as we expected, with collections from the likes of Marchesa, Michael Kors, Proenza Schouler, Betsey Johnson, Rachel Zoe and Reed Krakoff to name just a few making their spring/summer 2014 catwalk debut. Rachel Zoe took us on a safari with her wild, jungle inspired silk, leather and sparkly pieces, while Marchesa made us swoon with the signature intricate and romantic red carpet worthy dresses floating down the runway. As always, Michael Kors didn’t disappoint with his instantly wearable collection comprised of structured leather tops, A-line mini and pleated midi skirts, high waisted bikinis and shorts, cute cardigans and all-round essential staples. Sexy, wearable – this collection had it all! Betsey Johnson’s show was as quirky and theatrical as ever, with her pink haired models strutting down the catwalk with confidence and attitude. The collection itself was slightly more understated than we expected (this is Betsey Johnson, after all!) but there was an abundance of leopard print and big skirted dresses to make up for it. Your work wardrobe dilemmas solved!

Starting a new job and fretting over your wardrobe woes more than the workload? Or maybe you’re in need of a little fash-spiration when it comes to getting ready for the office every day? Whatever your work wardrobe dilemma, we’re here to help you kick it stylishly. From office-appropriate footwear to cleaver day-to-night staples, check out the stylish solutions to the most common workwear dilemmas below, and prepare to become the envy of your colleagues on Monday.  “Are sandals appropriate for the office in summer?” Well, this depends on your workplace and the industry you work in, but in effect, yes. Working in the creative sector, where rules on dressing are often lenient in comparison to corporate companies is a plus, but most workplaces require a certain degree of smartness. Mid-heeled sandals are a great way to do summer footwear: chic, thick ankle strap sandals in neutral tones such as nude and black work well with dresses and ankle-grazing trousers. A medium, block heel or mini wedge is perfect if you’re blessed in the height department and ideal if you fear sore feet at the end of the working day. Check out our top three options below. 1. £30, available at Next; 2.£95, available at Kurt Geiger; 3. £69.99, available at Zara “I have to attend a lot of after-work events and need transitional outfits without looking too dressy.” Day-to-night looks are getting easier to shop for, as elements such as print, embellishment and cut begin to seep into the boardroom. Post-work networking has, luckily, overhauled work wear, pushing out dull colours and unflattering cuts and replacing them with wardrobe staples that scream wow. We’ll forever be grateful to the hard working women at the top of their game who don’t forget to mix Fendi with fiscal reports! Start by picking out one […]

Beating the British Weather with Smarter Clothing Choices

[noskim] While there is plenty to love about Britain, the weather would not be at the top of many people’s lists. The climate here can be extremely unpredictable and more often than not, pretty miserable. Even in the summer, it’s hit or miss as to whether we’ll actually see the sunshine. This can make it very difficult to plan anything, from where to go and what to do through to what to wear. Given the unpredictable nature of the British weather, it is important to make some smart clothing choices. This is not to say that you can’t shop for summer clothes, a new spring wardrobe, party clothes for the winter, or colourful autumn outfits. What it does mean is making sure you have a number of wardrobe essentials that can help you to beat the fickle British weather. 5 essentials for every woman’s wardrobe In order to ensure that you’re fully prepared for the weather, clothing-wise, no matter what the season, there are a few essential items that every woman should have in her wardrobe. These smart clothing choices will help to ensure that you have something to hand to conquer the sometimes freak weather conditions that the UK can experience. 5 of the essentials you should make sure you have in your wardrobe include the following: 1. A smart cardigan: You may think that jumpers and cardigans are autumn or winter staples. However, the unpredictable nature of British weather means that you never know when you might have to layer up. A cardigan can just be slipped on when it gets chilly and taken off again when the temperatures start to rise. 2. A cool pair of wellies: Most of us associate wellies either with autumnal weather, gardening or washed-out mid-summer festivals. However, as we have seen, snow […]

Top 10 AW13 trends you can wear now

With Fashion Month well and truly over, have you been left with an impatient, fluttery feeling in the pit of your stomach from witnessing next season’s fashions? Naturally, fashion types want it all now, RIGHT now (and some do – catwalk fresh ‘n’ all!), but being six month behind the lust worthy collections doesn’t have to prove so painful. See, trends do a fair amount of season-hopping, and, just because the fashion calendar is currently on AW13, doesn’t mean you can’t recreate what you’ve just seen on the runways with your current wardrobe. So, to help you beat the fash pack and get ahead of the style game, we’ve picked out the top 10 AW13 trends that you can wear right now. Until next season, enjoy! Checks and Plaid Although Saint Laurent gave us copious amounts of plaid for AW13, as did 3.1 Phillip Lim and Emilia Wickstead; Dries Van Noten led the trend for SS13, with beautiful sheer plaid, layered in a wearable way.  Blue The new black, blue is having quite a moment! Roland Mouret, Elie Saab and Fendi made having the blues look fashionable for SS13, whilst Barbara Tfank, Oscar de la Renta and Michael Kors brought it bang up to date for AW13. Volume Cocoon coats, sloping shoulder knits and generously cut skirts were big (pardon the pun) at Emilio de la Morena, Stella McCartney and Céline for AW13, but Daks, Eudon Choi and Nina Ricci are already championing oversize for Spring. Minimalism Maxmara, Ports 1961 and Stella McCartney steered the minimalist movement for SS13, but AW13 saw Victoria Beckham, Céline and J JS Lee make us pine for sleek lines and fuss-free fashion. Wardrobe staples in a clean, print-free palette are winners. Capes Batman has never been chicer. Chloe, Valentino and Victoria Beckham made us […]

Five minutes with Lie Sang Bong

With the ‘Gangnam Style’ dance perfected, an array of impressive catwalk collections under his belt and a fashion career spanning nearly three decades over three continents, Lie Sang Bong is certainly a fashion force to be recknoned with. My Fashion Life caught up with the esteemed South Korean designer to talk wardrobe staples, favourite fashion cities and, of course, Gangnam Style. Tell us about the inspiration behind your Spring/Summer 2013 collection The Spring/Summer 2013 collection was inspired by butterflies, which represents transformation. Another source of inspiration was a sense of nostalgia for 60s fashion and my childhood memories; the collection explores retro elements and transforms them into modern shapes and volume. Being one of Korea’s most esteemed designers you started your fashion career in your native country, later moving to Paris. What was this change in fashion culture like for you? When I first started to show my collection in Paris in 2002, it felt like I was starting everything all over again. Although I love Paris and it was always my dream to show at Paris Fashion Week, nothing was easy and I kept asking myself if I should continue to do this or not.  However, after a few seasons, I started to feel more comfortable working there, and fascinated by people who were excited to see my collection. Presenting my collection during Paris Fashion Week was like a dream come true. What are your favourite fashion cities and why? I love Paris, New York, and London the most. Paris has its own tradition and history of fashion that fascinates me; New York is a fun place where new trends are made everyday and London is so creative and funky. In three words, style is… Character, taste and harmony. Tell us more about the Lie Sang Bong woman The Lie Sang Bong […]

Five minutes with Kirsty Ward

After completing a fresh-out-of-university-design-stint at Alberta Ferretti, and an MA in Womenswear at the esteemed Central Saint Martins, designer Kirsty Ward set up her eponymous label in 2010. Beautifully marrying clothing and jewellery; Kirsty’s creations echo her affection for unconventional structures with a hint of eclecticism – working unexpected materials such as rivets and hinges into her wondrous collections. Named by Vogue.com as one of their ‘Designer’s to Watch in 2011’ and one of Selfridges’ ‘Bright Young Things of 2011’, My Fashion Life caught up with uber-talented designer to talk about cake, christmas presents and her hotly anticipated Spring 2013 collection. Your Spring Summer 2013 collection is pitched as ‘sheer sports luxe vs. tea ladies’; Tell us about the creative inspiration behind this? Each season I like to move on from where I’ve left it the season before, but I will add something new into the mix to keep it fresh. I’m obsessed by tea ladies and the tabards/aprons that they wear, I also like the challenge of making something ordinary/mundane into something beautiful/luxurious. What is your favourite cake? This is a very hard question as it depends on the mood I’m in but it’s a toss up between carrot cake and lemon and poppy seed cake. Tell us of a secret skill you’ve mastered other than fashion and accessory design? I’m very good at making gin and tonics (strong, plus sliced lemon and sliced lime in a fitting glass) Why did you choose to design clothes and jewellery? Clothing is something I’m trained in and jewellery is an obsession. Tell us about your creative hideouts. Where do you go to get inspired before designing a collection? I like to hunt old people down on the street as they always seem to have the best outerwear! I like to read, […]

On-Trend Shoes Can Be Comfortable Too!

It’s so easy to be lured in by beautiful shoes. Often they’re so painful we wear them once or twice and then buy some more. And so the cycle continues! But isn’t it about time we started looking for on-trend shoes that are actually comfortable, or at least shoes that fit? To get the perfect fitting women’s shoes we need to start measuring our feet. The one size fits all width is becoming a thing of the past, with a number of high street stores and online retailers selling stylish shoes in various widths. For a bit of inspiration here’s a quick look at the latest trends: Wedges The ultimate spring/summer shoes are wedges – sky high, platforms, even flatforms. Any colour goes but look out for on-trend blues, from ice blue to navy and cobalt, for a nautical feel. Or try opulent metallic for a more versatile choice, in gold, silver or pewter. Embellished Flats Either pumps, sandals or open toed, these wardrobe staples look great paired with skinny jeans and a casual tee. Or for smarter days wear with a pencil skirt and on-trend peplum top. Shoe boots With the disappointing British weather shoe boots have stuck around this summer. Perfect worn with anything from a party dress to office wear, they’re a must-have trans-seasonal shoe. Stay classic with black suede or for something a bit more eye-catching opt for animal print.

Five minutes with Style Passport’s Sarah Walter

Catering to our style and beauty needs for staycations, spa breaks and beach holidays and a whole lot more, by cherry picking products from ‘high/low’ fashion and beauty brands, Style Passport is the go-to destination for stylish holiday essentials. My Fashion Life caught up with the lady behind it all, Sarah Walter, who after starting a placement at British Vogue the same day Anna Wintour started at the magazine, and holding senior positions at Marie Claire, and Harpers, decided to set up Style Passport out of a ‘lifelong dream.’ Meet the woman who’s done it all… How did the idea to set up a specific platform like Style Passport come about? Style Passport is the culmination of my careers in magazines and then retail, combined with my huge passion for travel and adventure. Name three holiday spots you regularly visit and why. Our Cottage in the Brecon Beacons in Wales as often as I can to walk, garden and spend quality time with my family and friends. Baros in the Maldives which is the most perfect tiny island I have ever visited, with the best fish life I have ever seen, and New York. A friend said her only regret in life is she cannot visit New York for the first time again, I agree. If you could live anywhere in the world, where would that be? I’m getting keener and keener on California, the lifestyle is very appealing all that delicious food and wine and the drives…… Three things I never travel (abroad) without are… My iPhone for music, maps and note taking, a huge pair of sunglasses (currently loving Linda Farrow giant pink shades) to feel glamorous, protect me from the sun and to disguise jet lagged eyes. And finally a scarf which can be a wrap, towel, skirt, head wrap and […]

Five Minutes with designer Thuy Duong Nguyen

With an acute ability to effortlessly blend cultures, it’s no surprise Vietnam-born, Germany-based designer Thuy Duong Nguyen’s fantastic brand, Thu Thu, is clocking up space in international glossies and the wardrobes of the fashion elite. Incorporating stunning Vietnamese embroideries, hand-crafted by women of the Hmong ethnic group from Sapa, a mountainous region in North Vietnam, into western silhouettes; Thu Thu brings an artisanal touch to a contemporary wardrobe. My Fashion Life caught up with the hotly-talked-about designer to discuss wardrobe staples, dream celebrities and the comfort vs. fashion dichotomy. What was the inspiration behind your spring/summer 2012 collection? A candy jar of colourful sweets. If you hadn’t become a fashion designer, what would you be? I always wanted to be a singer until I went to Germany’s biggest TV casting show when I was 16 years old. (Wow, that’s actually something that I’ve kept secret for years!). I obviously didn’t get through, so that took all my teenage hope of becoming a famous pop star! But if I think about it now, I guess I would have probably done something botanic or food related because I love exploring plants and trees. I also love good food, so maybe running a restaurant would have been a great alternative to fashion, but that might even be an option for the future. What are your wardrobe staples? I have two pairs of jeans that I always wear, a couple of loose cut t-shirts and some fancy embroidered vintage cardigans. The rest of my wardrobe is mostly filled with THU THU pieces. Who is your favourite designer and why? I don’t have a specific one, but I do like Chloé, Isabel Marant and Dries van Noten a lot. All three are very contemporary, but sophisticated and classic. Heels or flats? Why? Definitely heels as […]

Five minutes with…PPQ

With a client portfolio that counts Rihanna, Alexa Chung and Sienna Miller as loyal fans, Amy Molyneaux and Percy Parker – the dynamic driving force behind the directional label, PPQ – must be doing something right. Awarded with being responsible for ‘spearheading the drainpipe jean revolution’, Amy and Percy took this pioneering approach across the realm of fashion, marrying it seamlessly with music. The design duo run a record label by the name of 1234 Records, and host the annual sell-out 1234 Shoreditch festival. My Fashion Life caught up with the creative twosome to talk favourite holiday destinations, music, and of course, fashion. Describe a typical working day in the life of the PPQ dynamic duo. Amy: A typical day consists of designing across several collections with responses to factories or meetings with suppliers or pattern cutters. Percy: Generally coordinating show details or planning overseas trips to meet buyers and press. With what inspirations in mind was the PPQ spring/summer 2012 collection conceived? Amy: Inspiration came from one of our archive prints, so SS’12 has a retro feel to it – It’s very nostalgic yet fresh and upbeat for summer. Percy: It was great to look back at some of the iconic pieces we have made in our 10 years. Tell us about your favourite holiday destination? Amy: It’s a semi-difficult question as a lot of the places we travel to are work related – even though they are good. I think the best place I go to where I leave my drawing behind is the North of Ibiza, but you never stop having ideas or being inspired. Other highlights are Antigua and Japan. Percy: Mauritius was a great autumn break at the end of last season. No jet lag and the most chilled out staff on the planet which […]

Five minutes with…Made in Chelsea’s Union Jack loving Ollie Locke

Famed for his flowing, shiny locks as much as he is for his love of sporting flamboyant Union Jack splashed attire, Made in Chelsea’s resident handsome hunk Ollie Locke seems like apt arm candy to discuss during Jubilee week. My Fashion Life caught up with him to talk prospective partner qualities, the secret to his shiny hair and, of course, that Union Jack painted Jag… Describe a typical day in the life of Ollie Locke. What do you get up to? Nowadays, most days are filled up with filming for Made in Chelsea, photo-shoots and other projects. However on my day off I love exploring London, and getting lost on South Bank; Borough Market on a Saturday; London Aquarium; trying new restaurants, and in the evenings, dinners or driving around London in the Union Jag. I’m also writing two books which keep me beautifully busy. If you could choose one place in the world to live forever, where would that be and why? I have a feeling I will end up living between London and California, as I don’t want to be stuck in one place. I love England and it will always be home, however, I’m someone that needs to explore. I love Stellenbosch in South Africa, New York, Cornwall, Tuscany, India and Thailand. I need the sea in my life, so anywhere life takes me, as long as there is wine and the sea; I’ll call that home for the time being! Tell us about the wardrobe staples you cannot live without? I love my black Monkee jeans; I take them everywhere and wear them every night. In the winter months I’m a big fan of hoodies and beanies. Summer time I need jackets and shorts with vibrant coloured shoes, and I can’t live without ironed shirts. Also, […]

New York Fashion Week: Alexander Wang, Victoria Beckham and DVF

Starting off our weekend round up of New York Fashion Week is the ever cool downtown designer Alexander Wang. Loved the world over for his easy-to-wear urban silhouettes and formal loungewear, Wang failed to disappoint once again with his Fall 2011 collection. With sleeveless parkas, luxe fur jackets and others in leather, black and grey separates, metallic footwear, satin pants, leather panel detailing, multi-split tunics, open toe leather boots and tassels galore, his autumn offering is perfect for that achingly cool Nineties inner city girl. Next up was our own home-grown British designer Victoria Beckham who, despite recently announcing her fourth pregnancy, didn’t let the bump get in the way. With impeccable tailored eveningwear in abundance, Ms. Beckham delivered a truly classic collection of trademark pencil dresses that we’ve come to know and love – not to mention a tweed grey, burnt orange and cranberry colour palette with the occasional pop of sunshine yellow seen across cocooning minidresses, laidback loosened silhouettes and draped fabric shawls – the epitome of chic, wearable every day staples. Last but not least was Diane Von Furstenberg with her eagerly anticipated vibrant ‘Goddess’ collection, where the signature colour-injected stripes and floaty separates simply oozed feminine fantasy. With bold graphic prints, sun-infused patterns, metallic accents, gladiator sandals, signature ‘broken cloud’ detailing and neon green and yellow splashes of vibrancy, the collection was undoubtedly the picture perfect backdrop for summer. Stay tuned for more daily NYFW updates…
