Burberry Brit celebrates first London store with a bang

If there’s one thing guaranteed to make you feel self-conscious, it’s going to a Burberry bash with a room full of beautiful people. Last night Burberry threw its doors open to the British brand’s first Brit store in London’s Covent Garden, and armed with an appetite for champers and canapes, I headed down to the 10,000 square foot space to party with the stars. Christopher Bailey was there, of course, to host the evening’s events – that man does not photograph well, he’s seriously hot (and young) in the flesh – along with Burberry faves Carla Delevigne and sister Poppy, Lily Donaldson, Tali Lennox, Sasha M’Baye and Alex Watson. And it didn’t disappoint. With heightened audio and visual technology – huge plasma screens and swinging features – it’s the most digitally innovative Burberry store in London, crafted with British metallic and mirrored materials to create an industrial but super-sleek finish. “We are really excited to open our first Burberry Brit store in London,” says Christopher Bailey. “We have had great feedback from our Brit stores around the world, so it felt right to open the biggest Brit store in our home city. “Music is intrinsically connected to Burberry Brit; it’s very much the attitude and energy flowing throughout the collection and the store. It’s very modern, it’s a little bit dishevelled and it’s distinctively British.” Speaking of music, a live set from Life in Film, Burberry’s band of choice, kicked last night’s soiree off in true Brit style, and fellow musician Ellie Goulding was among those getting down to the guitars. I had a little boogie when the lights went down, but not before I gauged my way through mini chicken and leek pies, donut balls and soft-centred chocolates on sticks. Burberry and Bailey – you throw a damn good […]

Karen Elson designs accessory range for Nine West

The flame-haired model and singer Karen Elson has teamed up with American high street footwear brand Nine West to collaborate on a limited edition collection of accessories for their ‘Vintage America’ Collection. Born and raised in Manchester, Elson now lives in Nashville with her husband, rock star Jack White, and their two small children – who are also set to star in the Nine West campaign – and it seems the model couldn’t be happier with her new-found business venture. “My dream of designing a collection that’s a true reflection of me has now come to life through this collaboration,” said Elson. Having worked closely with the brand’s creative director Fred Allard on the range, Elson has created a collection which reflects the inspiration she took from the Thirties Dust Bowl and burlesque dancers. “An otherworldly beauty and modern muse like Karen Elson truly embodies the inextricable connection between fashion and music,” said Allard. “I was not only inspired by her music, but also by her powerful personality, attitude, allure and undeniable talent.” However, the footwear franchise has not yet confirmed whether Elson’s range, which launches in the US in September, will be available in the UK, reports The Telegraph. Fingers crossed it will be…

Five minutes with Mulberry’s Emma Hill

Mulberry’s Emma Hill is one of those seldom stars who’s huge success hasn’t hindered her humility one bit. Before she joined the luxury British label in 2008, the brand was going from strength to strength under the creative direction of Stuart Vevers. Many thought he’d be a tough act to follow, but Emma’s distinct Brit-girl twist has brought the cult brand to a whole new bed of roses. Once celebrated solely for its iconic accessories, Mulberry’s ready-to-wear is now as sort after as its ‘It’ bags thanks, no doubt, to Hill’s hawkeye vision and inherent understanding of what women want to wear. But enough about the past, Mulberry’s – and Hill’s – future is getting more exciting by the minute. With the help of regular contributor Venetia Dearden, the designer’s spent the last three years putting together the brand’s latest venture: a photography book giving readers unprecedented access to never-before-seen images of Mulberry’s factory, of flame-haired models having a sneaky cig before fashion week, and of its many famed parties. We caught up with Emma at the book’s launch last week for a (very) quick chat about the book, her favourite holiday reads and what she’s got in store for the brand’s big 40th birthday… Tell us a bit about Mulberry the book… It was something we decided to do two years ago – well, over two years, because we were already thinking about the 40th [anniversary] – and we’d been working with Venetia Dearden. She’s such a great photographer and we love working with her so it all started from there, really. And also I think we’re quite a visual brand, we like to tell stories and we’re quite a mouthy brand so she [Venetia] became like a Mulberry and followed us round and came to shows. She’s gutted […]

Met Ball 2011: best dressed

We’ve just about recovered from the excitement of the Royal wedding with its vast array of stylish guests and, of course, Kate Middleton’s breathtakingly beautiful McQueen gown – but the weekend hit us with more star-studded events as the Met Costume Institute Gala landed in New York last night. The Met Ball brings the best of the fashion, film and music industry together for a night of fabulous fashion and exhibitions, and this year’s gala was hosted by none other than Vogue editor Anna Wintour, who honoured the late Alexander McQueen with an exhibition called Savage Beauty. Naturally, the prestigious event is harder to get into than Wonka’s chocolate factory, so we’ve cast our sartorial eye over the fashion elite who bagged a Golden Ticket and strutted their stylish stuff on the red carpet. Here’s our top 10 best dressed from last night’s Met Ball…   Ashley Green She may play a vampire in Twilight, but Ashley Green managed to look positively angelic in a custom Donna Karen strapless gown. The nude voluminous tulle was adorned with silver sequins that trailed into a wedding-like train. Teamed with a sleek up-do and touches of sparkle in her ears, clutch and cuff, she looked positively radiant. Jessica Alba Always one to look utterly fabulous on the red carpet, Jessica Alba didn’t disappoint at last night’s Met Ball dressed in a custom Ralph Lauren platinum strapless bustier gown covered in a sparkly crystal-encrusted overlay that highlighted her growing baby bump. Blake Lively Being the face of Chanel has been a dream come true for this Gossip Girl starlet, and last night she was joined by Mr Karl Lagerfield himself. Naturally, Blake opted for Chanel couture by means of a nude embellished dress covered by silver-lilac a chiffon sash to flaunt her fabulous figure too much. Beyoncé […]

Coachella Style Special: Nicole Richie

No best dressed list is complete without Nicole Richie, especially when it’s based entirely around a festival. Famed for her hippy boho chic, no one looks more at home dancing around in a field than Ms. Richie. The mum-of-two took time out to attend the Californian festival and chose a comfortable girlie outfit for the three day music bonanza, donning an oversized floral smock dress and flat suede boots that made us envy her wardrobe all the more. Her tousled long locks and oversized round black sunglasses completed the outfit (and are a clever way of hiding tired eyes or smudged make-up, FYI). A simple and stylish look that will be easy to emulate at Glastonbury this year, non? [poll id=”87″]

Coachella Style Special: Diane Kruger

The coolest and most stylish celebrities flock to the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in Indio, California, every year to watch the cream of the musical crop strut their stuff on stage. But what happens in the audience is just as thrilling as the on-stage antics, in particular what the famous and fabulous choose to wear to the star-studded event. And so, with the very best of festival chic to give you some serious summertime wardrobe inspiration, we bring you our Coachella style special… Kicking off our best dressed list is none other than the always-impeccable Diane Kruger. The German actress was spotted having a whale of a time at the festival, dancing around and constantly hugging boyfriend Joshua Jackson (is it just us or is he getting better with age?) but as usual, the girl did it all in style. Wearing a full nude maxi skirt and loose fitting black vest top, she looked hotter than the searing Californian temperatures. Diane knows that no one wants irritating jewellery or over-done accessories when they’re busy dancing and kept it to a minimum wearing a festival-favourite trilby and a skinny brown belt. Simple, stylish and oh so chic -top marks for Diane. What do you think of Ms. Kruger’s low-luxe look? [poll id=”86″]

Miranda Cosgrove makes a statement in McQ

You know you’re one of the luckiest people on the planet when it’s only April and you’re already decked out in a dress from McQ’s A/W 2011 collection. And part of this elite group is 17-year-old iCarly star Miranda Cosgrove, who attended the Elle’s 2nd Annual Women in Music concert in LA on Monday night looking divine in a McQ coral cocktail dress from the contemporary label’s latest collection. We love the leather accent through the bodice, and the flared skirt makes it a total sizzler. But it wasn’t all sweetness and light, she added serious edge with fierce black studded ankle boots, too, also from McQ (we drooled over them here, remember?), and a statement beaded necklace. An outfit to be envied, definitely. Another day, another wardrobe to wistfully yearn for. Y’know, we reckon we should keep an eye on Miranda… [poll id=”82″]

Who wore it best? Vanessa Hudgens vs Jamie King in Blu Moon’s leopard print maxi

Unleashing their inner animal with fashion’s favourite all-round print, Vanessa Hudgens and Jamie Chung lead a roaring battle to secure their rightful place as Queen of the (Hollywood) Jungle when they both donned a floor skimming, summer lovin’ maxi dress by Blu Moon – with two strikingly different results. In signature boho style, Vanessa pared the vivid print down, teaming her maxi with a slouch shoulder bag, statement necklace and stacks of bangles. A radiantly bronzed face with neutral lips, the High School Musical star fashioned a sexy, summery vibe as she arrived at Boa Steakhouse in West Hollywood to celebrate friend and actress Brittany Snow’s 25th birthday last month. But back in January, Jamie Chung had already beaten her to it, looking every inch the striking leopardess as she arrived at the premiere of New Films Cinema Burning Palms at the Arclight Hollywood in L.A.  Opting for pure red carpet glamour, the Sucker Punch star sported dewy make-up, complete with sumptuous red lips and 40’s glossy waves. Accessorising perfectly with a simple, contrasting long necklace, we’re just not sure about the black pointed shoes peeping through. Who wins Queen of the Jungle in this roaring fashion face-off? Vanessa Hudgens is a Seventies siren in animal print

If Zac Efron had broken up with us, we’d probably be a snivelling mess surviving on wine and snot. Vanessa Hudgens is a trooper, though. Not only has she been hitting the town in LA a lot since their split, she’s been doing it in style. Spotted in West Hollywood last week, the High School Musical star dined at trendy restaurant BOA to celebrate pal and fellow actress Brittany Snow’s 25th birthday, and showing absolutely no sign of a broken heart, she worked the boho chic style she’s become famed for in a leopard print maxi dress. She looked relaxed with her dark locks loosely tied-up and by accessorising with stacks of gold jewellery – we’re totally digging that arm band – and peep-toe platforms, she added a disco glam vibe to the look. Kudos to Vanessa, who’s just inspired our entire summer wardrobe…Zac who? [poll id=”55″]

John Galliano was absent from his presentation in Paris

After John Galliano was fired from his creative director post at Christian Dior last week for making anti-Semitic remarks, it was unsure whether or not the designer’s own AW11 collection – owned by Dior parent company LVMH – would go ahead at Paris Fashion Week or not. In the end, company executives decided on a low-key event, and held the small scale presentation at a townhouse in Paris’ moneyed Avenue Foch, where just 19 looks were showcased to press and buyers. The show itself was a somewhat sorry affair, and with Galliano understandably absent from the proceedings, the viewing was accompanied by music from Adele’s Rolling in the Deep and Coldplay’s Viva La Vida, with lyrics such as ‘We could have had it all’ and ‘I used to rule the world’ adding to the somber mood of it all. The models were dressed in signature Galliano gowns, with layered tweed jackets, pared-down pencil skirts, pleated sundresses, fur trimmed parkas and floral centrepieces – all finished off with distinctive bow shaped lipstick and dark smoky eyes, reports The Daily Mail. The New York Times shared this view on the show, adding, “typically Galliano, [a] mix of romantic dresses, a loosely draped mint kimono with black lace appliqué, a black vinyl trench and a silk halter dress.” But with Galliano now rumoured to be in rehab in Arizona, his future – and his brand’s – still seems an undecided one. See the looks from what might be his final collection below…

London Fashion Week AW11: Holly Fulton

Who: Holly Fulton What: A geometric delight in tropical brights topped off with a trimming of black fur. Thoughts: Holly Fulton’s autumn/winter 2011 runway show at Somerset House this morning was, unsurprisingly, a lot more colourful than the monochromatic collections we’ve been seeing so far this season – so much so, in fact, it could’ve passed for a spring line. Packed to the brim with the likes of Daphne Guinness, Samantha Cameron and Hilary Alexander, the BFC Show Space played host to a truly fantastic show with neon yellow geo-tastic shift dresses, black and white futuristic prints and fluffy pom pom skirts that bounced to the beat of the music. Silk Japanese-inspired maxi dresses had vivid digital prints, textured wool shifts have nude patent leather trimmings – some with sharp gold studs for added edge or decadent mohair skirts – whilst azure separates, splashes of yellow and leather accents match the Sixties-inspired PVC mini frocks, making one heck of a tropic-packed treat for autumn. London Fashion Week AW11: Ada Zanditon

Who: Ada Zanditon What: Ice-inspired geometric prints, structural shapes and contemporary tailoring. Thoughts: Submerged in the Ada Zanditon crowds today at her Fashion Week exhibition played a stark contrast to the inspiration for her show – the extreme climate of the arctic – where life forms and nature are scarce but beauty is abundant. The portrayal of this theme was enhanced by the rolling film and title of her collection – The CRYOFLUX – which depicted models with electric icy blue makeup wearing her structural geometric pieces, engendering a sense of winter wonder that’s so prevalent in natural arctic formations. Trance was the befitting music for this exhibition and as minimal beats permeated the room we were left to gaze at fabric encased in ice sculptures and to fight for space to drool over her collection. There was a range of fluent dresses – some in a plain palette of navy and marine but always well tailored and bejewelled with necklaces in chunky silver or soft leather. The architectural elements of her garments were highlights; blood orange blazers were spruced with squidgy constructural arms and puffy jackets were created in the same manner but in blue-grey and azure. The most commendable characteristic of Ada’s collection is that it’s all made from sustainable fabrics. Eco-friendly fashion has been her trademark since conception and this season it’ll go a fair way to convincing you green is good.
