Midweek Moodboard: Yippee for hippie!

As we’ve had positively awful weather for mid-April in London this week, you’ll forgive us for having our heads in the clouds and dreaming of sunnier climes. Luckily for us, we’ve had pictures of the Coachella Music Festival to keep us occupied (or jealous, whichever way you look at it) which has us totally obsessed with all things hippie.

Lusting after the Tila March Audrey leather tote

All eyes are definitely on this yummy mummy right now! Having just returned from holidaying in sun-splashed St Barts with husband Jay-Z and her daughter, Blue Ivy Carter, Beyoncé was spotted getting back to business in New York rather stylishly. Alongside her other, cosily wrapped and super-adorable accessory, Beyoncé sported a luxurious leather Tila March Audrey tote everyone at My Fashion Life HQ has got their peepers on! The Love On Top singer chose the tote in Mocca and teamed it with striking cat-eye sunnies, new bangs and ‘I’m boss’ heels. So, what can we offer in the way of praise for this new piece of arm candy that’ll ensure it’s on your arm quicker that you can sing ‘Run The World’?  Apart from the biggest music star on the planet approving, this large leather tote in a neutral hue lends to a relaxed city chic feel with an athletic twist, thanks to the panel of perforated leather. The main compartment isn’t like most totes, an open gaping hole for the world to peek at the secret contents of your bag, but instead has an invisible magnet to keep it firmly closed. The Audrey’s interior is roomy and practical, with a mobile phone pocket and zipped compartment, and, this niftily spacious number is happy sitting on your shoulder , arm or in your hand. It’s not often we see mega-celebs with practical bags, but now that Mummy Bey has more than just her lipstick and iPad to carry around, the Audrey tote seems like the perfect option. Snap up your very own piece of Beyoncé style by bagging the Audrey Tote, £452, at tilamarch.com

Lana Del Rey’s Style: Eccentric, experimental or explain, please?

This is not a post to knock down, smash to smithereens, and then build back up a singer, who by many, is held in high regard, but a complimentary offering to subtly convince them to sort our their damned wardrobe. Considering she’s relatively new talent, Lana Del Rey can definitely claim her stake of fame, after a revamped introduction into the music industry with debut track Video Games, followed up by the massive hit Born to Die; being snapped up by NEXT Model Management Agency and even having a Mulberry bag named in her honour. The voluptuous-lipped beauty is definitely a mesmerising singer and influencer, but quite the miserable dresser we hoped she wouldn’t be. That moment of fury, sudden disgust and initial shock-reaction gasp we’ve all endured at some point in our lives came for me the other day, when trawling through various fashion sites I landed on an image of Lana at the Evening of Environmental Excellence, in Los Angeles. Her attire raised many questions at once, which couldn’t all be processed into rational answers at the time, because, frankly, Lana’s style doesn’t fall into ‘rational’, either. Wearing a graphic printed blouse (great), dark jeans (on point) a statement medallion necklace (yes, I approve), Converse trainers (comfortable, fashionable) and a seriously misplaced faux fur coat (huh?), I couldn’t figure out, mentally, how to assess this muddled ensemble. See, Lana may have a hidden stylish streak, as awe-inspiring as her hypnotic vocals, but we only get to hear the latter and never see the former. Modern-era music artists have really taken to expressing their on-stage credentials through their choice of clothing and, no one has done this better than the eccentric, ‘Black Barbie’ embracing Nicki Minaj. With her bubblegum pink hair, copious amounts of bust-flashing, a conversation starting derriere and food-inspired […]

Monday Musings: The things rattling our fashion brains on the hardest day of the week

Pierre Balmain can make you look like Emanuelle Alt (YES!) They keep telling us we can resemble the lithe, nonchalant French Vogue editrix if we snap up some Pierre Balmain pieces, from the subtly priced second line for Balmain. Basically, YES! We do want to look like the chicest French woman in the world, who hardly tries but still manages to look a bajillion dollars! Think soft tees, ultra-structured blazers and black skinnies in luxe leather or denim. The only was is Alt. Watch the Pierre Balmain Fall/Winter 2012-13 video here. Marni at H&M extortion We’re still recovering from the beauty of the Marni at H&M collaboration. The collection of exquisite brocades, sequins, sparkle and statement jewellery launched on March 8, and was a far more civil and orderly affair than its predecessors. A wristband system ensured shoppers weren’t crushed to within an inch of their lives (the norm for some fashion lovers) but before we knew it, pieces we’re advertising on eBay for triple the retail price. Vogue.co.uk reported that around 700 pieces have already been listed on eBay from all over the country, selling at majorly hefty prices to what they were bought for. Defies the idea of an affordable collaboration, we think, and if we wanted to pay big bucks we’d head straight to Marni, not via H&M. Naughty eBay sellers. Nothing like a heat wave to bring out the sorbet shades! We bet you all spent the weekend revelling in whatever sunshine was peeking though the clouds. It was truly a godsend for the fashion conscious, as it meant we could whip out our sorbet shades that have been sitting so patiently in our wardrobes since we bought them! Long live Jonathan Saunders’ pop pastels and the iridescent floral lusciousness of a Christopher Kane skirt. More […]

Best Dressed of the Week: Rita Ora at the NME Awards 2012

We love it when celebrities ditch the traditional dress code in favour of more quirky, up-tempo ensembles. Rita Ora: the new girl on the block who’s taking the music, fashion and star gossip charts by storm did just that at this week’s NME Awards. She looked a heavenly vision in white with an interestingly rebellious edge at the Awards, held at the Brixton Academy on Wednesday; sporting a fluid, white Hussein Chalayan spring/summer 2012 suit. The Hot Right Now singer ensured her look didn’t fall into boardroom territory by accessorising with gold jewellery and spikes. Rita opted for various gold necklaces, bracelets and rings, and finished her look with a statement Christian Louboutin ‘Marquise’ python clutch. She chose to break up the whitewash with nude peep toe B Brian Atwood ‘Bambola’ pumps. Showcasing her signature beach wave blonde curls, Rita opted for a strong scarlet nail colour offset by a nude lip and strong eyes. Rita’s edgy sense of style gives a clear indication of the direction her musical talent will take. She’ll definitely keep surprising the showbiz masses, and, we feel she bears an uncanny resemblance to our other rebel favourite: Rihanna.

Katy Perry: An emotional, post-Russell transformation

Many of us can sympathise with the excruciating emotional pain Katy Perry has endured in the past few weeks. A messy divorce; unashamedly womanising ex-husband who deems it perfectly fine to return to his waywardly amorous ways so soon after playing the ’Love’ game, and a hugely successful music career are really not the easiest to balance. But Katy has managed to project a steely persona; one that gives nothing away but beneath the surface, a storm is brewing. Her nearest and dearest have come to her rescue, encouraging her to see other men post- Russell Brand, and even Elton John dedicated a ‘singles table’ to Katy and a whole host of other love-starved stars. But who better to understand what Katy is going through than Rihanna; whom Katy is a success replica of and, Rihanna, too has tasted the sour fruits of a tumultuous, ill-fated relationship with violent ex Chris Brown. Although the best pals’ circumstances vary greatly, there is an eerie coincidence between their post break-up appearances and behaviour. After splitting from Chris Brown, Rihanna adopted a harsher, angrier and darker tone, which was evident through the music she produced. Rated R was her fourth album, and her first after her horrific ordeal; featuring tracks such as Te Amo, Hard and the deeply dark Russian Roulette. Similarly, Katy Perry revealed in her latest interview with Interview magazine ‘my music is about to get real f****** dark, so . . .’ which hints towards following in the footsteps of best celeb friend, RiRi. Photographed for Interview in a sexy studded, sequinned bra, long, black gloves and chandelier earrings, and surrounded by a host of burlesque dancers in very little; Katy is unrecognisable in this new, smokier guise. Her outfits, although already eccentric, are turning raunchier and slightly more rebellious, […]

Christopher Kane NOT heading to Dior, Raf Simons “unceremoniously dumped” from Jil Sander

More fashion house musical chairs this morning! Not only have the rumours of Raf Simons replacing John Galliano at Dior been pulled into question due to an article published by Bridget Foley in her WWD column claiming he was “unceremoniously dumped” from Jil Sander (possibly to make room for Jil to return to her eponymous label), but the short-lived rumours of Christopher Kane being in the running for the coveted job have also been squashed. By the man himself, no less!

Monday Musings: The things rattling our fashion brains on the hardest day of the week

The things were mulling over this morning at My Fashion Life HQ…. Hedi Slimane to  replace Stefano Pilati at YSL It’s the classic will he, won’t he situation, and annoyingly took over this fashion weekend in Milan. It’s the fashion we’re here for, not the design house politics! Suzy Menkes put forward a thoroughly exciting piece on the current situation surrounding designer dismissals and admissions; although, we must say how super sad we were to see the uber-talented Raf Simons wave a teary goodbye during his final bow at the Jil Sander show on Saturday. Rigorous reporting Oscars – THE OUTFITS! Yes, you guessed it. Forget who won what, its more who wore what! We can’t wait to read the opinion outpour on who chose to destroy their chances of a sartorial trophy, and who naturally won, again. We’ll be a part of that outpour, too. More of Lupo the royal pup – limelight stealer! Finally, we have someone else upping Kate Middleton in the camera hogging stakes, as the royal couple’s adorable four-month-old cocker spaniel had his first outing in Kensington Gardens, last week. We’re a nation of pet-lovers, as well as obsessive Kate-Mid fanatics, so we’d rather see more of the pair, together, obviously. As per Kate’s usual website crashing antics post public appearance, we suspect a hike in Lupo named pets. We’re hyperventilating over the Marni x H&M lookbook – complete with prices! Prints galore and at price tags we just can’t argue with. If high fashion could fall straight from the catwalk, then the Marni x H&M collection is it. The new look book featuring the entire collection complete with prices is a dream. Coming true on March 8. Paris Fashion Week. That is all. The last day of an opulent Milan Fashion Week is upon us today, […]

Rate or Slate: Florence Welch vs. Pixie Lott vs. Jessie J vs. Rihanna

The glittering BRIT Awards took place last night, and as expected, lady of the moment Adele walked away with major gongs! Winning British Female Solo Artist and Album of the Year, Adele most definitely woke up to a multimillion-pound hangover this morning! Other big wins included Ed Sheeran, who landed British Male Solo Artist and British Breakthrough Act. But that’s enough with the gongs; let’s get down to the style nitty- gritty and do what we do best. Being fashion people, we had our beady style eye and fashion radar antennae out in full force to track down the red carpet efforts, and whether these really were as good as the hit music makers they were supposed to be celebrating. Jessie J in Falguni & Shane Peacock; Florence Welch in Alexander McQueen; Pixie Lott in Dolce & Gabbana and Rihanna in Givenchy haute couture has got us into a bit of a sartorial muddle, as we sit on the fence once again. We can’t decide whether we love what we see or whether we just want to close our eyes and shake our heads in sorrow at the design disasters before us. Thank god for the discerning eye of our life-saving, style-rescuing Style Jury! My Fashion Life News Ed says: Jessie J – ‘Bold, daring and attention-grabbing,  Jessie J isn’t afraid to stand out. This dress goes hand in hand with everything she is about and I love it!’ Florence Welch – ‘A bit of a predictable choice by way of designer and colour, but I wouldn’t have Flo any other way. She knows what works for her, and I can’t flaw this look!’ Pixie Lott – ‘I had to do a double take when I saw this – the usually eccentric, modernly dressed singer looked out of place on the […]

Rolling in the Deep – trouble that is, Mr Lagerfeld

We’re gearing up to kick off fashion month – well, NYFW is well under way with several reports of FROW-gracing celebrity IT girls- and it’s all getting a little heated. Kanye’s decided to show in one of fashion’s most easily offended cities again, after a rather ‘rap with a capital C’ to quote one onlooker, debut, and Karl Lagerfeld is on some sort of mission to be branded the next Galliano (minus the racism), after unnecessarily mentioning one of fashion’s pet hates when talking about the ridiculously talented Adele: the ‘F’ word. Yes, the man at the helm of the intertwined C’s candidly called Adele ‘fat’ in an interview with the Metro newspaper, although he cleaned up his verbal vomit by adding she has a ‘beautiful face and a divine voice.’ In the real world, there is nothing untrue about Lagerfeld’s comments. Adele is a large lady. ‘Large’ can be taken as euphemism on my part, if you wish, but it doesn’t withdraw from the fact that Adele isn’t Alexa. On an equal footing, Adele’s weight doesn’t deduct a single scrap of talent from the phenomenally gifted young lady that she is. Tremendously admired either side of the pond, with global album sales in excess of 23.5 million; this immense affection for her arises from the simple fact that she can, with such ease, captivate an audience of thousands by appearing on stage with just a microphone and pianist in tow. That not a single special effect; vintage Versace body or pyrotechnic-laden spectaculars are needed to enhance what she has. She has it all. But it wasn’t labeling Adele ‘a little too fat’ that got my mind reeling, it was more the reaction afterwards. The Cut reported on designer Isaac Mizrahi’s unwavering defence of Lagerfeld’s comments, as the designer ran to […]

Best of 2011: best dressed celebs

It’s getting towards the end of the year and we’ve been overcome by a sudden sense of contemplativeness.  While New Year might bring resolutions, diets and silly foil hats, there’s something it also brings that we’re not ashamed to love – yes, best of lists! Here at MFL we like a yearly round up just much as the next publication, but ours is, like, so much more fun because it involves clothes and celebrities. What’s not to love? We took a look through the year’s celebrity style hits to sift out the best from the average. So, fasten your seatbelt, kids, here’s our run through of this year’s best dressed… Alexa Chung in Miu Miu Looking like a grown up school girl, we loved Alexa Chung’s Miu Miu ensemble at the label’s spring/summer 2012 show in Paris earlier this year – no wonder she scooped the Style Icon Award for a second year running! Jessica Alba in Dolce & Gabbana Jessica Alba rarely puts a foot out of place and looks so pretty at a Swarovski party in California. Her lace Dolce & Gabbana dress combined with lashings of gems reminded us why we love Jess so much. Nicole Richie in Stella McCartney Kick starting us into the festive mood this year, style queen Nicole Richie wowed us in her Stella McCartney poppy red skirt and sweater combo. Known for her laid-back boho style, she gave us a ladylike look we hadn’t seen from her in a long while. Selena Gomez in Marchesa Ladies and Gentlemen, the MFL award for Best Newcomer goes to 19-year-old Selena Gomez. Wearing this angelic Marchesa dress, she somehow looked girly and feminine whilst maintaining an air of sophistication. We predict big things! Olivia Palermo in Tibi Queen of accessorising, no best dressed is complete […]
