Nicki Minaj covers V Magazine

Possibly one of the most fascinating musical figures to emerge of as late, the sharp-tongued, tough-talking hip-hop princess Nicki Minaj has certainly put a profound feminine stamp on a male orientated world – and we’re always game for a bit of girl power. With an equally eccentric style to match, Ms. Minaj has now found her way on the cover of this month’s V Magazine – suitably titled ‘The Discovery Issue’ – shot by Inez Van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin, and this hard-hitting lyrical genius has certainly gained a huge amount of new-found respect in the music industry (heck, we think she’d even give Lady Gaga a run for her money). The dual cover issue sees the Trinidadian rapper dressed in a series of extravagant and theatrical designer outfits – all thanks to Mark Fast and Versace that is – with some rather strange Kiss-like make-up to match, all of which had to reach her personal approval first. “Everything I do has been approved by me personally,” she tells V. “My team is mostly made up of guys, but none of them would ever think about telling me what to wear or what to do with my hair. They know that ultimately I’m gonna do what I’m gonna do.” And with her debut album Pink Friday just a mere few months old, this femme fatale makes her own music and doesn’t care if you don’t like it. “I’m an entertainer – I like to make people laugh,” she says. “Some will hate it and some will love it, but all will remember it. And that’s what I want: to be remembered.” It’s always refreshing to see a strong-willed and determined female. The January issue of V magazine hits newsstands today – take a look through our gallery below to see […]

Taylor Swift in Gilles Mendel

Picking up the award for Favourite Country Music Artist at the People’s Choice Awards in Los Angeles on Wednesday night was – unsurprisingly – the queen of country Taylor Swift, who looked gorgeous in a dreamy peach and nude Gilles Mendes frock. The asymmetrical one shoulder design left little to the imagination – heck, against her alabaster skin she almost looked naked – but finished with an attractive on-trend pleated skirt and satin waist, the young musician certainly knows how to rock pale appeal. Teaming her look with nude strappy sandals and a head of soft golden curls – yes, yet more neutral tones – Taylor made a splash with a slick of vibrant mandarin lipstick for simple spring-ready style. This newly singleton certainly knows how to set the male hearts a flutter – is a certain Jake Gyllenhaal kicking himself?

Eva Longoria in George Hobeika

Pint-sized Latino Eva Longoria certainly took Madrid by storm Sunday night as the sexy senorita played host to the 2010 MTV Europe Music Awards. Wearing a total of 10 outfits during the course of the night, the Desperate Housewives star was definitely on top fashionable form – and yes, that does include her Lady Gaga parody mock-meat costume… what can we say, we love a little humour. But the most glamorous ensemble of them all has to be the stunning George Hobeika dress the actress wore at the beginning of the night. The velvet and sheer layered puff ball dress looked utterly stunning upon her golden brown skin, while the sheer embellished chest detailing only added to the true beauty of the piece – and though the cut may have been a little too short for some, it was perfect for Eva with pins like those. Teamed with round-pointed black stilettos and sultry red-carpet makeup, Ms. Longoria was certainly dressed to impress.

Rihanna in Marchesa

One fabulous frock to walk down the MTV Europe Music Award’s purple carpet on Sunday was a floor length Marchesa gown, and of course, it needed someone equally spectacular to wear it. There’s no denying it, the dress does look slightly wedding-ready on Rihanna, but that’s not to say the Barbadian beauty has anything of the sort on her mind. The overpowering cream ruffles and pearly white swirls may have been too much to handle for most, but not ol’ Rhianna – her flame red hair and feisty attitude allows her to pull off even the most daring of dresses. And the extravagant fish tail and accentuated one-shoulder detailing meant the singing soulstress looked truly elegant on the nigh t- heck, why does Madrid get all the fashionable fun, eh? Oh well, there’s always next year… Image

All the gossip from Britain’s Next Top Model Live

The first ever Britain’s Next Top Model Live exhibition took place this weekend at London’s impressive ExCel Centre, so with our press passes at the ready and dressed to perfection, the MFL girls were ready to embrace the life of a model. And in more ways than one… The weekend wasn’t spent entirely sipping champagne and browsing the vintage clothing stalls – oh no – us girls had to earn our keep and take centre stage at the Style Icon Workshop to give daily discussions on this season’s biggest trends. Our editor Emily took to the mic as the expert guest speaker giving a confident, funny and insightful look into this season’s camel, leopard print and shearling trends, and brought in a crowd of fashion-hungry girls (and, occasionally, guys) day after day while us interns simply posed on stage in our outfits – oh the hardship. In our free time we explored the wonders of fashion, beauty and music. The stalls were certainly varied, from Zandra Rhodes footwear, Jonathon Aston tights, Bourjois makeup to even teeth whitening, though we had to pass on the latter as the fear of the dentist suddenly took over. Free makeovers and hair styling were also on offer for a bit of well-deserved pampering, all thanks to the London College of Beauty and the world-famous stylist, Adee Phelan. Musical sensations Eliza Doolittle and Diana Vickers provided the lyrical entertainment, while BNTM judge Charlie Speed left many a young girl in a flutter with his live interview on the main Kiss Open Catwalk stage. However, we all agreed that the highlight of our weekend was witnessing the amazing Chyna Whyne in action (although the Tia Maria cocktail bar came a close second). Aside from her jaw-droppingly stunning appearance, the singer-turned-stilletto-master gave a hilarious insight into how […]

Five minutes with jeweller Johnny Rocket

Johnny Rocket’s a name that should need no introduction, but what the heck, we’re going to give you one anyway. When John Pearce launched his jewellery label back in 1997, he had no idea it was going to become one of Britain’s most iconic accessories brands – but he’d hoped it would be. Quickly catching the eyes of all the people that matter in music and celebrity cultures, it was the fashion industry that first saw Johnny Rocket’s potential for super-stardom when he sealed deals to collaborate with Tom Ford and Julien Macdonald, among others, to create his signature innovative designs that fuse edgy rock-spirit with intricate expertise. Making somewhat of a name for itself as a coveted cool and quirky company, creative commissions have flown through the door for Johnny Rocket – he created Jamiroqui’s iconic warrior headdress, Kylie’s legendary hotpants and a bespoke Swarovski-encrusted guitar for the Darkness frontman Justin Hawkins among the rest. But Johnny Rocket’s no longer a one-man brand – in 2002, when Pearce was working on a diamond-embellished Ford KA with Julien Macdonald, he met Niall Paisley, an esteemed jeweller, who soon became a partner. Fast-forward to today, though, and Johnny Rocket’s been working its magic on a new project – with diet Coke, as it would happen, creating limited edition Swarovski-embellished bottles exclusively for Selfridges, where John will also be appearing today to help customers customise their own versions. We caught up with Johnny Rocket last week to find out more about the diet Coke collaboration, what makes jewellery so special, and what sparkle we should be looking out for this season… You’ve just announced a collaboration with diet Coke to create a limited edition collection of bottles – how did the collaboration come about? diet Coke approached me about working with them […]

Florence Welch in Givenchy Couture

It’s the biggest celebration of music and Sunday night it was the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards held in Los Angeles. One lady high on the fashion radar at this year’s awards was British beauty Florence Welch of Florence and the Machine, and although she didn’t win eight awards like rival Lady Gaga, she still managed to pull off a dramatic look wearing a Givenchy Haute Couture lace dress from the AW10 collection. The songstress stayed true to her vintage vibe with this glittering gold long sleeved floor-sweeper, and nipped in by a satin corset at the waist with zip detail down the front, Florence gave her elegant look an element of sexiness. Whilst this style on some could look a little washed out, the muted metallic tones work beautifully with Welch’s red lips and fiery locks – and with minimal accessories (just matching shoes and clutch), we think this style is spot on for the singer.

Five minutes with Wayne Hemingway, co-founder of Vintage at Goodwood

It’s been a while since the fashion world last heard from Wayne Hemingway. Red or Dead, the label he started with his wife, Geraldine, was one of the most iconic British fashion lines of the 90s, and although the label is still going, their attentions have been significantly diverted. Most recently the couple have been collaborating with leading architects on model houses for the Scottish Housing expo in the highlands and revamping the Boscombe seafront by the beach in Bournemouth. Last year they even created a garden for the Chelsea Flower Show. But this summer the Hemingways are back on the fashion scene once again and making a very loud splash with one of their most ambitious projects yet. Their summer festival, Vintage at Goodwood, which celebrates the best of British music, film, food, art and, most importantly, fashion, launches in a few weeks with a full weekend of what promises to be a vintage fashion lover’s wet dream. Lily Allen will launch her new vintage clothing business at the festival and Zandra Rhodes, Hardy Amies and Pearl and Dasiy Lowe are all hosting events. They’re building a temporary high street filled with glorious shops including Cath Kidston, John Lewis, a Penguin Books library and the world’s largest vintage market. And the highly eclectic live music line up is equally exciting. With the buzz around the festival mounting, Wayne, who says he has never been so busy in his life, kindly spared us five minutes to answer all our questions… Why did you decide to launch Vintage at Goodwood? Because it’s needed. There’s a gap. Everything we have ever done over the years has been a reaction to a product we feel is missing in the market. When we started Red or Dead we felt that there was a gap […]

Five minutes with Barbara Hulanicki

Legend isn’t a word we like to throw around lightly, but it’s the only word we see fit to describe Barbara Hulanicki – a woman who, alongside her husband, changed the face of British fashion in the Sixties. After starting her career as an illustrator, Barbara Hulanicki shot to success with Biba, the iconic fashion store, almost half a century ago and she’s since trod many waters in several different shores – fashion design in Britian, Brazil and Japan, makeup, numerous collaborations and interior design in Miami. That’s where she currently resides, with her hugely successful interiors company, and has been credited with doing as much for the architecture scene over there as she has done for fashion here. More recently, however, she’s the subject of a feature film, Beyond Biba, which charts her incredible life from her humble beginnings to her soaring success. After grabbing a copy of the film, we caught up with Barbara Hulanicki to find out more about this often over-looked but undeniably talented designer. First of all Barbara, congratulations on Beyond Biba! Yes, well, I had nothing to do with it – it was the lads who did it all. How did it come about? Well that came about because Louis’s [Price, director] mother used to work for me in the Sixties and Seventies at Biba, then she just rang me up and said could Louis come and film you in Miami while you work? So I said yes, why not? And I thought it was just an interview actually, I didn’t realise it was going to be so much fun and games. Well it’s fantastic. We’ve seen it a couple of times now and we love it. Oh do you? Fabulous. I try not to watch it – I get very cross with myself […]

Hip-hop star Chipmunk has teamed up with Foot Locker and adidas Shop this summer to launch the latest reincarnation of the iconic adidas Top Ten trainer. As the face of the campaign, Chipmunk will be pictured in Foot Locker windows nationwide when the must-have sneakers hit the shop floor on 6th June. We caught up with Chipmunk for a quick Q&A about the campaign, his personal style and why it’s all in the walk. How does it feel to be fronting the campaign for such an iconic footwear brand and trainer? Yeh, good! Cool! It’s kinda hard to explain, it’s good for both parties, you know, I’m into trainers – I like Footlocker, they’re into me – they like my music, so we just made it happen. How do you wear your adidas Shop which is your favourite colour? White, it’s summer “innit”. One thing I don’t do is leave a load of laces hanging out my trainers, you know, big bows and stuff, I just think it looks pretty young. Other than that I just do them up and put them on. So how important is looking good to you? Yeh man, I just feel that you’ve got to stay fresh, that doesn’t mean that you’ve got to wear designer clothes, I just personally like them to stay looking fresh. How would you describe your style in 3 words? Chipmunk, Jamaal, Indescribable. When your not sporting your Adidas originals, what other brands do you like to wear? Prada Good choice….. I like

Round the table with Henry Holland and Gemma Cairney

As you well know, here at MFL we’re rather partial to a fashion TV series or two, and none more so than Frock Me with TK Maxx, back on TV screens in the UK for a second series to brighten up the bleakest Sunday mornings. Hosted by super-style icon Alexa Chung, London designer Henry Holland and Radio 1 style expert Gemma Cairney, Frock Me follows fashion through its rampant relationship with music as it highlights top trends for the season, chats to the very best in the business, gives DIY styling tips, and shows you how people on the street are working – and styling – the season’s best trends… in a nutshell. Naturally, we were obliged to catch up with Henry and Gemma when TK Maxx invited us to London’s Zetter hotel last week where, alongside a few other bloggers, we quizzed the pair on all things Frock Me and fashion. We’ve seen three shows so far, can you tell us what we can expect from the rest of the series? HH: There’s a show about romance, there’s a show about Americana, there’s a show about festivals; so there’s those theme-shows, and you can expect to see Sophie Ellis-Bextor, you can expect to see Gabriella Cilmi, we’ve had the Future Heads, Marina and the Diamonds, Paloma Faith – she was good, and everyone did live too. And then there’s some very ridiculous sketches… GC: We’ve got prints in Bristol [just aired] which was fun, I actually put a couple up against each other for the Frock Off, and the girl really looks like Alexa so that was good. And then we’ve got in Birmingham Americana – we ended up with about 200 people surrounding us in the middle of town for the final section, so we were kind of […]

Topman launches AAA collection

Calling all would-be rocks stars: if you like your jeans skinny and your hat worn at a jaunty angle the get ready for the AAA collection for Topman. The rebellious-musician look continues to be a popular menswear trend and following a demand that Topman Design Director Gordon Richardson describes for ‘a range that made you look and feel like a rock star,’ Topman has delivered as usual, with the creation of the truly rock ‘n’ roll influenced AAA collection. The campaign, which is fronted by Louis Simonon – son of legendary clash bass player Paul Simonon, features a moody looking Louis in a typical black and white backstage setting. Two components which are of course essential for that bona fide rock star appeal. The collection itself is a mix of skinny tailoring and luxe-feel jerseys in a palette of monochrome. Sharp blazers and wet-look jeans give the collection that overall lean and edgy silhouette. And for that true indie-boy aesthetic there’s also a range of accompanying accessories that includes a feather tipped hat, the classic studded belt and a velvet skinny scarf. Who needs authentic rock ‘n’ roll style when you can pop down to Topman and buy it off the peg? The AAA collection launches in Topman flagship stores on 27th may.

Scott Schuman and Garance Dore in TV show deal

They’re fast becoming a fashion power house are the street-style sweethearts, but it seems the Sartorialist’s Scott Schuman and his illustrator-come-blogger girlfriend Garance Dore are ready for their next joint venture: TV. And though it would seem the project is still very much in the beginning stages, Garance has been spilling a few beans about the show – though, truth be told, her dream is actually to make a movie “about girls and life and fashion”. But for now, TV is where it’s at, even if she’s not sure exactly where ‘at’ is. “We’re working on a TV show with Scott,” she tells the Huffington Post. “We don’t know yet exactly what form it’s going to have. It’s the same thing: why would we do a classic TV show, when the world is changing? And the world of media is changing? So we are working on the concept. We want something that talks to the people very easily and that you can see on the Internet.” Fashion fans will be pleased to hear, however, that it’s likely to be geared around all things super-stylish. “The world is in such little pieces now and you take your information from everywhere,” she explains. “I’d like to go ask people I trust, “Who’s a great musician?” and then maybe meet the musician and then do the same with fashion or food. I think it will be more fashion-oriented.” Watch this space.
