Our favourite five bags for spring: Stella McCartney botanical Falabella

So spring has officially sprung, and we’re not going to lie, we’re struggling to contain our excitement. The sun may be beaming though our windows and blinding our screens, but frankly, we don’t care because we didn’t have to wear a coat today, and after what feels like a year of winter, that’s something to be totally smug about. Naturally, we’ve been scouring the rails to find the perfect partners to accompany the sun and our good mood style, and we’ve found five fab spring bags that you won’t be able to live without this season. From cool classics to statement colour splashes, we’ll be bringing you an edited selection of our favourite bags for spring each day this week to make sure your arm’s never lacking candy. Today’s favourite? Stella McCartney, spotlighting this season’s trend for flora and fauna. We’ve never quite got over Stella McCartney’s Falabella tote since its launch over a year ago, and the luxury label’s large floral version for SS11 is doing nothing to quash our obsession. Featuring a multi botanical print strewn across crisp white cotton, the Falabella’s picture-prettiness is counterbalanced by an exaggerated chain trim for the ultimate in feminine meets fierce. And if the brightly-coloured blossoms aren’t enough to put a smile on your face this season, let the eco linen soothe your conscience (it is climate week, after all). Zoe Twitt creates cool-quaint staples for spring

Melbourne-born fashion designer Zoe Twitt is a relative new comer to the fashion scene, but with a strong design career and eponymous label ZOETWITT behind her, this young starlet is destined for big things. It was inevitable, really, coming from a fashion family – her parents ran a textile company while her grandparents owned a couture dress label – but it was the move to New York aged nine that struck the designer profoundly. The exciting clash of cultures and fast pace of the city carved a creative path for Zoe, and though a brief diversion after university saw her method acting for a moment, she was destined for a career in fashion – in 2009, she set up her eponymous line, ZOETWITT, after an epiphany for a basics brand. An independent label that certainly shouldn’t be missed, Zoe’s love of delicate colours and soft silhouettes make way for a subtle sweetness to her designs alongside a strong ethnic vibe and hippy chic loveliness – and these pretty girly get-ups are an absolute wardrobe must-have for spring. The fusion of light and airy pastel palettes with floaty separates and a quiet quaintness put Ms. Twitt high on our list for labels to lust after this season – those easy-breezy basics will have us skipping through flower-filled fields like the sweetest country girl – and we couldn’t think of a better way to freshen up your transeasonal style. Find Zoe Twitt at FadMashion.com – you’d be a fool to let this down under designer pass you by. Check out our favourite pieces from the collection below… [nggallery id=4]

In store for spring: House of Fraser

This is a guest post by Katy Sutton who, several months ago, won Wonderbra’s Full Effect Your Life competition and assisted us along to House of Fraser’s SS11 press day to see what’s in store for spring before it hits the shops. Here, she gives us her rendition of spring style from House of Fraser and highlights her favourite pieces… If there’s a trend you have your eye on for spring/summer 2011, you’re sure to find it nestled in the new season collections at House of Fraser. Sunglasses are a must for summer, not only because there’s a chance of sun but also because of the number one trend for SS11 – rainbow brights. Shield those eyes for bold, bright colour – hurray! – where House of Fraser’s Hot House collection is channelling the trend. A favourite piece of mine is a multi-coloured sheer jumpsuit from Ted Baker (above). Working in sync with an emerging trend of digital prints this jumpsuit is defiantly eye catching. A visual sensation of bright bursts of intensely pigmented colour generated by the digital print will see you hitting the mark for next season. What’s more, if you love this print as much as I do then be sure to carry it on; poolside. Yep, a beautiful swimsuit in the same print – perfect. For those with a quirky side there’s Coquettes, featuring cherry prints and small floral patterns. If you’re more of a classic woman, Techno Warrior is the trend for you. Featuring classic shift dresses, structured jackets, hard lines, tough textures, powerful colours and geometric shapes this collection knows exactly where it stands for this season. If, like me, you can’t help but fall nicely back into safari colours and tribal-inspired pieces in the summer then take a look at Bedouin. A beautiful […]

First look: Victoria Beckham’s spring Sunglasses

We all know sunglasses are no longer solely reserved for summer – you can thank Victoria Beckham for that – and as it happens, the newly-pregnant designer has just unveiled her latest line of sunglasses for spring. Yes, it may be mid-January, but in fashion that means a new season is nearly upon us, and frankly there’s no reason why you can’t be topping up your springtime accessories as we speak – and where Victoria Beckham’s pieces are concerned, we suggest you make your move all the more quickly (remember how quickly her handbags sold out on Net-a-Porter?). With the eagerly-anticipated launch of her brand new sunglasses collection set to hit stores any day now, VB is no wall flower when it comes to a great pair of statement shades – the bigger the better – which leaves us in no doubt that we’ll be lusting after her latest designs just that little bit more. According to Elle UK, fashion fans can expect to see an array of wayfarer styles, statement shapes and, for those looking for the ultimate in luxury, a pair of gold plated aviators, no less. Well, it is Victoria Beckham. To say we’re counting down the days until their launch would be an understatement to say the least… [Image: Elle UK]

MAC’s new spring looks

There surely must be no make-up artists more hard working than the good folk at MAC. Not a month goes by that there’s not a new collection launched. Which brings us neatly on to news of the latest products to hit the beauty giant’s shelves. There are five new collections to look out for including Tabloid Beauty, a range of longwear lip colours, lustre lip colours, mascaras, eye liners, line fillers and skin refiners. And put your sunglasses on for Riveting, a collection of monochrome hues punctuated with shocking pinks, pearl-like peach and copper tinged mauves for the rock chick in you. Also set to be huge is a limited edition range inspired by Liberty. The gorgeous Liberty print packaging is reason alone to fall for it. But spring’s hottest shades included, such as coral and petal pink, it’s sure to be a sell out. But what’s caught our eye at MFL HQ is the Too Fabulous range and the warm pink hues of MAC’s Spring Colour Forecast 1. So much so, we decided to road test them. Spring Colour Forecast: Starting off with the predictions for spring, the forecast is in and the outlook is rosy. The Forecast range consists of four collections in one. MAC has compiled four collections in one, each centring on products in one hue. There’s Coral, Pink/Lavender, Yellow/Gold and Plum/Burgundy. Each range has blush, lipstick, lipglass and eyeshadow. Yet the sun is particularly shining on the sparkling hues of the range’s Crushed Metal Pigment (£24.50). Available in both the Coral and Pink/Lavender ranges, the pigment pots include four shades of metallic loose powder. Often the frustrating things about such powders are that the look fantastic in the pot. They even look fantastic brushed upon a finger tip. But add them to the eye and […]

MFL’s top 20 must-haves for spring

The (admittedly few) sunny days we’ve had this week have really got us looking forward to warmer months and since we’ve already given our current wardrobe a good old spring clean, we like to think that we deserve a bit of seasonal indulgence. In an early attempt to create our spring wish list, we’ve compiled some of our favourite pieces for the coming season. Camilla Skovgaard mules For those that aren’t too keen on the idea of clogs for spring, why not invest in a pair of mules. This pair come courtesy of one of our favourite shoe designers of the moment. £280 from Net-a-Porter. AG Adriano Goldschmied boyfriend jeans You can never go wrong with a pair of boyfriend jeans. Team these with flats or heels and if you’re feeling extra daring, add a denim shirt for Chloe’s take on spring. $225 from Shopbop. Topshop bralet Underwear as outerwear is big news this season. Have a little fun with the trend by mixing bold prints with this daring bralet from Topshop. £20 from Topshop. Mulberry Alexa Ah, the Mulberry Alexa. Cube presents: Spring/Summer 2010 collections

Not so long ago, the lovely people at Cube PR invited us to view the latest collections from some of their favourite clients, including Bank, Timberland and Fred Butler. Here, we take a look at our pick of the bunch for next season:   Darkroom Darkroom is a new concept store that is set to open in London next month. The brand mixes high-end fashion and interior accessories and the store (which will be on Lamb Conduit Street in Holborn) will also house art and sculpture exhibitions. The collection at Cube was striking yet simple, offering practical pieces that could alternatively be seen as works of art to just sit and admire. Leather accessories from designer Fleet Ilya took inspiration from saddlery, constructed with moveable joints, while Medicine Douce (who has collaborated with none other than Christian Lacroix) used rope to create contemporary and unusual jewellery. Our favourite pieces had to be the hand-knitted leather clutch from Camilla Staerk and Von Sono’s oversized scarf.                           Fred Butler Entitled Hibiscus Ridiculous, Fred Butler’s spring 2010 collection was a complex spectrum of shiny, plastic, colour. 3D stars were the main focus of these accessories, in the form of wide-pronged chokers and holographic head gear. The props stylist and accessories designer won New Gen sponsorship this season and will be showing at Somerset House during London Fashion Week. It’s no wonder that her dramatic collection has grabbed attention, since Butler’s enormous 3D accessories have been used in music videos for The Gossip, Little Boots and Lady Sovereign. By the looks of the spring 2010 offering, we think this extravagant designer should be expecting a call from a certain Miss Gaga in the near future!                                   […]

The shade of spring? Electric blue. It’s electrifying!

Armand Basi One, Gucci, Michael Kors, DKNY. All have one thing in common: their prolific use of the shade to be seen in this sprin – electric blue. Fitting in fabulously with fashion’s current obsession with all things 80’s (without being as garish as the neon shades saturating the revival), the colour adds a classic intensity to any summer ensemble and will suit all skin tones. Wear head to toe, a la Michael Kors or mix with black for striking, 80’s glam. Feel like injecting some print? Stick to animal print as seen at Lanvin.

Preen’s recessionista friendly Spring/Summer line hits shops

So times are tough, and we love our brands and we still adore shopping. Why oh why can’t our favourite designers just be a bit more affordable? But wait, what is this? A diffusion line from the very gorgeous Preen? No, it can’t be it’s too brilliant. But it’s true; it’s a wonderful truth. Ok, so we’re not talking cheap as chips brilliant. But when a dress from the mainline will set you back up to £685, and you see a very similar version from the same design duo for £255 it is time to get excited. The collection is called Preen Line and prices range from £89 to £255. The range is super cool, and is inspired by the movie Easy Rider; there are fab jersey dresses and great graphic t-shirts and separates. Preen’s designers Justin Thornton and Thea Bregazzi have done a great job on Preen Line. It retains all the coolness of the mainline, just more purse friendly. They’ve also kept their signature silhouettes and bold colourways. And if that wasn’t exciting enough, Preen are planning an accessories line to launch this year. The collection has just hit Net-a-Porter and Selfridges so you’d better get your skates on, it’s sure to sell out.

Spring Style: Top Knots

Unable to take the plunge and actually chop my hair, I have found a less permanent way to have a spring fling with my ‘do. When you are known for your scruffy ‘bird’s nest’ locks like I am, it is amazing the difference it makes when you scrape your hair off your face into a neat top knot. Scattered all over the S/S runways from Lanvin to Rodarte, it is a severe look which contrasts beautifully with all that femininity and flowers for Spring.

Sock it to me Spring!

Apparently, Spring has sprung! Although the wild blizzard I had to navigate through this morning would beg to differ…..And so we launch into the difficult fashion territory that is the slow changing of the seasons. Whilst I may long with all my heart to fling off my black opaques and frolick in bare legs and sunshine, my poor circulation and sub-zero body temperature is putting up rather a strong resistance to such whimsy. Everywhere from magazine editorials to TV shows seem to be pointing towards the answer to all of our cross-seasonal/ saratorical problems – why, ankle socks of course.

The Hills’ Lauren Conrad: Spring 08 Collection

I hate to admit it, but I’ve been slightly obsessed with watching The Hills on MTV for the past few seasons. Part of it is that there’s something about watching meaningless juvenile drama unfold that I find absolutely enjoyable and necessary. But the other part is I that I love seeing the great outfits the girls wear, and I look forward to getting glimpses of the fashion industry through Lauren Conrad’s (LC) internship at Teen Vogue and her pursuit of becoming a designer.

Reviews: Gina Velasco Spring 2008

Gina Velasco describes her Spring 2008 Ready-to-Wear collection “Bolero Breve” as being inspired by the 1920s and the work of Mexican artist Frida Kahlo. In theory this may seem like a strange converging point, but Velasco managed to pull it off flawlessly. The twenty-nine piece collection was presented on Wednesday to an intimate crowd who seemed to receive the designer’s collection warmly. While the first few looks of the show included sportswear items, it was the series of evening dresses that I was most impressed by. Velasco incorporated embellishments like crochet, embroidery and beading in a very fresh way, without seeming derivative or tacky. A long pale pink silk gown has pink crochet along the chest. A knee length gray sheath features beaded vines twisting up the bodice. A v-necked mini dress has a pink crocheted top and a white chiffon skirt embroidered with blossoms.

On Off preview: Spring/Summer 08

Going to a fashion show, especially one held in a club- is like starring in a show yourself. Everyone is immaculately dressed and as guests wait patiently for the show start they too make their own judgements on the outfit choices of others. As I waited for the ON|OFF Preview Spring/Summer 08 show – held on Aug 1 at the CC Club in London – to start, two guys behind me were having a ball checking out individuals and exclaiming “Ooh I love what she’s wearing etc etc. I too am one of those people. I love to observe. Unfortunately I don’t like to be observed. So I was very pleased when after half an hour of eyes darting back and forth towards me On|Off’s creative director Lee Lapthorne announced the show would finally be starting. We were to be treated to two presentations filled with sneak previews of the Spring/Summer 08 collections from designers, Aman Copeland, Peter Pilotto, Jerry Ribbon, Richard Sorger, Pyrus, Aminaka Wilmont, Hannah Marshall and Deryck Walker. The evening was being filmed by the BBC and was basically a taster to whet our appetites for the impending fashion week.

Spring Trend Alert: Feeling Fruity

Spring must definitely be in the air as we’ve been seeing a more light-hearted, colourful approach to fashion of late. Sharp blues and pillar-box reds have been fresh new flashes of colour amidst the nudes and greys, lifted only by a flash of gold till this season. Now colour-lovers can have their cake and eat it as colour and gold are finding a perfect partnership in fruit-inspired jewellery. It’s everywhere, and I for one love it. Strawberries and pineapples are strung around necks, whilst green crystals form the shape of apple earrings, in fact, some charm bracelets are a veritable fruit salad of juicy gems! Some of the best pieces come from the high street, but rest assured, should you feel the need to splurge you’ll find plenty to whet your palate at Browns Fashion and Net-a-Porter. Here are 6 of the best… 1. Pineapple pendant, Urban Outfitters £24 2. Blue Crystal Fruit snap bracelet, Butler and Wilson, £58 3. Cut-out cherries pendant, Topshop £6 4. Strawberry pendant necklace, Kenneth Jay Lane at Net-a-Porter, £80 5. Grape cluster earrings, Miss Selfridge, £6 6. Gold necklace with Fruit pendant, Daslu at Browns Fashion, £370

Contemplating Couture – Spring 2007 highlights

Over the past week we have seen some of the most exceptional designers of our generation allow their creative imaginations to run wild in honour of the very privileged few that can afford to spend on them – yes, it’s been Paris couture week, the most glamorous of them all, and I’ve had the lucky task of rounding up our favourite moments and creations for you. Our top three shows were Christian Dior, Armani Prive and Christian Lacroix, and here’s why: John Galliano for Christian Dior took a trip to 1920s Kyoto with a parade of red-lipped geishas gliding along in towering platform wedges and impossibly figure hugging skirts. The overall look was almost painterly with shades of cherry-blossom pink, oriental jade and a black that could have come directly from an ink pot , feminine and unashamedly sexy.

Very true, especially since most reports we’ve read about Fashion week seem to veer off the reason of its existence, which is to showcase “Talent & Creativity”, and has become more about, “Celebrity sightings and bitchiness“
