Tuesday Shoesday: MFL Top Picks

We don’t particularly enjoy reminding you that it’s Tuesday, but when shoes are involved we can’t help ourselves. In fact, we want to scream from the rooftops and shout about today’s top shoedrobe picks, because they’re just so wonderful. That’s enough of justifying the second most depressing day of the week, and on to the shoes.   We’ve picked out a Miami-Beach-glamour-oozing Charlotte Olympia platform delight, and who can resist a touch of flat, black, tasselled Acne chic? We’re not ones to say no to a heeled neon pair from Zara, and those Jeffrey Campbell studded Madame heels give us a weird tingling sensation in our feet, which here at My Fashion Life HQ, we take to mean ‘get them fast.’ Sneakers are the coolest way to sport flats without sacrificing your fashion girl status and nothing looks chicer than the croc print Kurt Geiger Lumiere pair. We’ve done the homework, now you do the fashion maths and weekly amend-food-budget-for-shoes, and get buying. 1.Charlotte Olympia Isla palm leaf suede and leather sandals, £695, net-a-porter 2. ACNE ‘Azalea’ oversized tassel loafers, £425, Browns 3. Neon yellow high heel sandal, £49.99, Zara 4. Jeffrey Campbell Madame blue denim heels, £120, Office 5. RAVER perspex metallic sandals, £55, Topshop 6. Imitation patent high heel sandals, £24.99, H&M 7. Lumiere Sneakers, £140, Kurt Geiger 8. Burberry Prorsum Sullivan shoes, £750, Matches

Five minutes with Allegra Hicks

Heading up a luxury lifestyle label that encompasses homeware, interior furnishings and fashion is no small feat. Allegra Hicks does this and more with great panache, and that’s why it is no surprise her beautifully standout textiles and prints are world famous. Dubbed the ‘Queen of Kaftans’, My Fashion Life caught up with Allegra to talk wardrobe staples, celeb homes and, of course, fashion! What’s a typical day like in the life of Allegra Hicks, Designer? Most of my day is spent working in my studio but I make sure I pop into head office every day to touch base and brainstorm with my team. My diary fills up far too quickly, but I spend as much time as possible at home with my family. Wardrobe staple you can’t live without? My James jeans and my printed chiffon shirts. Favourite holiday destination(s)? India and Italy. Having launched your fashion side of the business in 1998, which have you found to be more exciting; interior or fashion design, and why? I find being creative exciting. I love designing in all its forms, be it for interiors, fashion or stationery. It is the variety that makes it fun! What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given? Don’t be scared. True to your interior design roots, name a celebrity whose house you would like to re-decorate. I would do Julianne Moore’s house because she is interested in design and we would have fun together. You’ve previously been named the ‘Queen of Kaftans’, and, in May, are set to launch a capsule beach collection exclusively for John Lewis; name three holiday wardrobe essentials to be found in your suitcase. The perfect bikini, a beautiful kaftan and high factor sun screen! If it hadn’t been design, which other industry would you have worked in? I […]

Lana Del Rey’s Style: Eccentric, experimental or explain, please?

This is not a post to knock down, smash to smithereens, and then build back up a singer, who by many, is held in high regard, but a complimentary offering to subtly convince them to sort our their damned wardrobe. Considering she’s relatively new talent, Lana Del Rey can definitely claim her stake of fame, after a revamped introduction into the music industry with debut track Video Games, followed up by the massive hit Born to Die; being snapped up by NEXT Model Management Agency and even having a Mulberry bag named in her honour. The voluptuous-lipped beauty is definitely a mesmerising singer and influencer, but quite the miserable dresser we hoped she wouldn’t be. That moment of fury, sudden disgust and initial shock-reaction gasp we’ve all endured at some point in our lives came for me the other day, when trawling through various fashion sites I landed on an image of Lana at the Evening of Environmental Excellence, in Los Angeles. Her attire raised many questions at once, which couldn’t all be processed into rational answers at the time, because, frankly, Lana’s style doesn’t fall into ‘rational’, either. Wearing a graphic printed blouse (great), dark jeans (on point) a statement medallion necklace (yes, I approve), Converse trainers (comfortable, fashionable) and a seriously misplaced faux fur coat (huh?), I couldn’t figure out, mentally, how to assess this muddled ensemble. See, Lana may have a hidden stylish streak, as awe-inspiring as her hypnotic vocals, but we only get to hear the latter and never see the former. Modern-era music artists have really taken to expressing their on-stage credentials through their choice of clothing and, no one has done this better than the eccentric, ‘Black Barbie’ embracing Nicki Minaj. With her bubblegum pink hair, copious amounts of bust-flashing, a conversation starting derriere and food-inspired […]

Best Dressed of the Week: Rita Ora at the NME Awards 2012

We love it when celebrities ditch the traditional dress code in favour of more quirky, up-tempo ensembles. Rita Ora: the new girl on the block who’s taking the music, fashion and star gossip charts by storm did just that at this week’s NME Awards. She looked a heavenly vision in white with an interestingly rebellious edge at the Awards, held at the Brixton Academy on Wednesday; sporting a fluid, white Hussein Chalayan spring/summer 2012 suit. The Hot Right Now singer ensured her look didn’t fall into boardroom territory by accessorising with gold jewellery and spikes. Rita opted for various gold necklaces, bracelets and rings, and finished her look with a statement Christian Louboutin ‘Marquise’ python clutch. She chose to break up the whitewash with nude peep toe B Brian Atwood ‘Bambola’ pumps. Showcasing her signature beach wave blonde curls, Rita opted for a strong scarlet nail colour offset by a nude lip and strong eyes. Rita’s edgy sense of style gives a clear indication of the direction her musical talent will take. She’ll definitely keep surprising the showbiz masses, and, we feel she bears an uncanny resemblance to our other rebel favourite: Rihanna.

Deal of the Day: Issa animal print bikini

A bikini, you say? In February? Surely not! Well, actually yes, February is in fact the best time to buy beachwear, as a lot of pieces are still reduced in the sales, and quite frankly we love a bargain that gets us looking forward to summer! This two-piece by Issa is a prime example of a savvy early beachwear buy. It’s been reduced in the Matches sale from £60 a piece to £24 a piece, saving over 50%. Plus, Issa was created by Brazilian-born designer Daniella Helayel – so we know we’re in good hands – Brazil is after all the spiritual home of the bikini! Plus, with celebrity fans in their droves going crazy for the brand, we’ll also be in good company – if it’s good enough for Kate Middleton, it’s good enough for us! This animal print bikini also references the global traveller trend that’s set to be huge this summer – a trend that we think is perfect to be channelling whilst on holiday. Now all we need is some sunshine… Issa Animal Print Bikini Top, Was £60, Now £24, available at Matches. Issa Animal Print Bikini Bottoms, Was £60, Now £24, available at Matches.

Worst of 2011: worst dressed celebs

At MFL we’re all for celebrating the outstanding fashion forces in the celebrity world. However, as the year draws to a close, it makes the perfect opportunity to honour… who are we kidding, we mean poke fun at those celebs who have committed the most catastrophic crimes against fashion. Featured heavily were outrageous displays of flesh, horrendously ill-fitting dresses and general bad taste, girlfriend. No A-lister has been spared from our public naming and shaming, so ladies, if you see your name in this list, it’s time to sack the stylist… Abigail Breslin Young Abigail Breslin, bless her, is still in her style infancy but that doesn’t excuse this headache-inducing fluorescent yellow skirt suit< . It's how we imagine Margaret Thatcher would have dressed at an all-night rave. On a plus note, sales of Anadin went through the roof. Jessie J Yikes! This outfit is wrong on so many levels. While we love Jessie J’s ghetto fabulous style in small doses, this getup’s just plain scary. The bondage style catsuit, humongous fur coat and gold brogues were a combination too crazy for our liking. Lindsay Lohan We can’t help but hold a soft spot for Lindsay Lohan, especially as that fiery red head in Mean Girls. But that was a long time ago and, unfortunately, this dress is inexcusable. Crinkled and unflattering, it washed poor Lindz out in one fowl swoop. Rachel Roy Wow there, did Rachel Roy take a wrong turn and end up on the red carpet instead of her hotel room? That’s surely the only plausible excuse one has for wearing pyjamas – yes, really – to a movie premiere. She thought edgy, we thought crazy. Jennifer Aniston The one when Jen looked frumpy. Everyone’s favourite Friend, Jennifer Aniston left us with a huge feeling of disappointment […]

London Fashion Week SS12: Mulberry

Who: Mulberry What: Bonkers British seaside! Carousel animal prints, candyfloss colours – in hair and clothes – and pops of arcade brights on floaty dresses, skirt suits and separates. All, of course, laced with signature Mulberry charm, wit and English eccentricity. Highlights: Decadently embellished jackets that sparkle like arcade lights, a gold skirt suit in muted metallic boucle and lizzard print accessories (naturally). Lowlights: Khaki knitted leggings felt out of place under a pink skirt and zebra tee. Overall: You could have guessed, from the icecream van dishing out frozen treats and pink lemonade outside and giant candy-coloured cones decorating Claridge’s entrance, that this was going to be a lively show, but of course, it’s inside where all the fun happens. If you hadn’t guessed the theme of Mulberry’s spring 2012 collection yet, walking past the animal balloon-filled hall of helium leopards and zebras and into the ballroom, where sounds of seagulls played against an arcade entrance with flashing coloured lights and an enlarged clown-like face certainly gave the game away. As Oh I do like to be Beside the Seaside played out to the room, so the models appeared on the runway, clad in flowing pleated skirts and rain macs to account for every weather at the beach. Sundresses that resembled Refreshers in pink, lemon and mint stripes were layered over long-sleeved tops, while animal prints featured on jackets and dresses to deliver Mulberry’s signature quirk. Hair, backcombed to a bouffant, had washed-out candy floss streaks, a jewel-encrusted skirt mimicked reflections of the brightest Blackpool lights and muted gold summer boucle skirt suits added a posh twist to this pier collection. Though she’s still fun-loving (note new Alexas with teddy bear rivets), Mulberry’s girl has grown up for spring – she’s a little sexier and showier and, hell, we […]

Handbag Hunter: Alexander Wang Robyn Hobo

The Hobo bag was huge this past season, literally as well as stylistically. It was the perfect accessory for festivals and the beach, and as Alexander Wang proves here with his latest Robyn design, it appears our love affair with the hobo isn’t over yet. This butterscotch hobo bag hits the balance between edge and elegance, by mixing metallic corner trims with luxe textured leather. This, people, is a bag with attitude. What I also love about it is the way in which the Wang has given the hobo a fresh makeover for the new season by way of colour. Mustard will add a kick to any ensemble you choose to rock for autumn/winter, whether it’s neutrals or minimalist navy. But when it comes to the price tag, the way I see it is you’ve really got to love this mustard shade to pay £825 for it. For me? However much I love the hobo bag, this grain of mustard just doesn’t cut it. Alexander Wang’s Robyn Textured-Leather Hobo Bag, £825, available at MyTheresa.
