This week’s Rate or Slate is a real corker, because we love it when celebrities really step out of their style comfort zones and embrace the unexpected. First up, taking a brazen fashion stance – something she is more than partial to – is Katy Perry. Attending the Viktor & Rolf fall 2012 show in Paris, Katy ensured her popping blue hair colour matched her outfit, as she donned a black shift dress and contrasting cobalt blue coat from the design duos spring summer 2012 collection. Devil Wears Prada actress, Emily Blunt, opted for a Naeem Khan fall 2012 number at the LA premiere of her latest movie, Salmon Fishing in the Yemen. Usually seen in form-fitting red-carpet dresses, this was definitely a silhouette detour for Emily. DJ, model and muse Leigh Lezark brightened up a dull, grey, wet Paris fashion week morning by sporting a standout, canary yellow Sonia Rykiel suit to the designer’s fall 2012 show; a brave colour choice by the standards of someone who is almost always seen in black. It’s over to our Style Jury…. My Fashion Life News Ed says: Katy Perry: ‘You’ll hardly ever find me say anything negative about Katy Perry, and this time is no different. I would have lost the tights or worn my hair down as it looks a tad secretary chic (an uber stylish, gorgeous secretary, mind) but this is definitely my favourite. Gorgeous!’ Emily Blunt: ‘I think this dress totally drowned Emily, which is a shame because I usually love her red carpet style. If the hemline was shorter and she added some bold, flirty accessories, she could have got away with it but something isn’t right here. I don’t think the shoes help either.’ Leigh Lezark: ‘Kudos for going for something so bright and out of […]

Read MoreKaty Perry: An emotional, post-Russell transformation
Many of us can sympathise with the excruciating emotional pain Katy Perry has endured in the past few weeks. A messy divorce; unashamedly womanising ex-husband who deems it perfectly fine to return to his waywardly amorous ways so soon after playing the ’Love’ game, and a hugely successful music career are really not the easiest to balance. But Katy has managed to project a steely persona; one that gives nothing away but beneath the surface, a storm is brewing. Her nearest and dearest have come to her rescue, encouraging her to see other men post- Russell Brand, and even Elton John dedicated a ‘singles table’ to Katy and a whole host of other love-starved stars. But who better to understand what Katy is going through than Rihanna; whom Katy is a success replica of and, Rihanna, too has tasted the sour fruits of a tumultuous, ill-fated relationship with violent ex Chris Brown. Although the best pals’ circumstances vary greatly, there is an eerie coincidence between their post break-up appearances and behaviour. After splitting from Chris Brown, Rihanna adopted a harsher, angrier and darker tone, which was evident through the music she produced. Rated R was her fourth album, and her first after her horrific ordeal; featuring tracks such as Te Amo, Hard and the deeply dark Russian Roulette. Similarly, Katy Perry revealed in her latest interview with Interview magazine ‘my music is about to get real f****** dark, so . . .’ which hints towards following in the footsteps of best celeb friend, RiRi. Photographed for Interview in a sexy studded, sequinned bra, long, black gloves and chandelier earrings, and surrounded by a host of burlesque dancers in very little; Katy is unrecognisable in this new, smokier guise. Her outfits, although already eccentric, are turning raunchier and slightly more rebellious, […]

Read MoreGalliano: the industry reacts, but why not harshly?
After what seems like a whirlwhind week of events, the shock of John Galliano’s dismissal from Dior is slowly starting to sink in. He’s now headed to rehab to resolve issues with alcohol, but will be facing trial for his anti-Semitic actions of last Thursday later this year, which could land him in prison. Meanwhile, Dior’s show is going ahead as planned this afternoon, without the designer and his famous bow. Reactions to this are still rolling in, but while much of the internet is full of “serves him right” quips to Galliano’s racist scandal, some of fashions big shots are being criticised for defending the designer. Here, we take a look at the industry’s reactions to Galliano’s sacking and the events that led up to it, and delve into why it’s excusing the enfant terrible. Franca Sozzani was the first to kick-start the designer’s defence on Monday, when she wrote this on her blog: We aren’t clear about one thing: the video starts right at the moment when Galliano launches his tirade. So one or the other must be true: either whoever took it was a master of timing, or what we are seeing is a video created for this purpose. In other words, possibly it was made by holding the mobile in the hand waiting for the celebrity – evidently provoked – to explode… An explosion was more than probable when you add together the amount of alcohol Galliano had consumed and the provocations of the people speaking to him. When Hilary Alexander interviewed Giorgio Armani, he responded with the following: “I’m very very sorry for him. It’s obviously a difficult time for him. I am also very sorry that they videotaped him without him knowing.” Chanel Iman responded to the events on Tuesday this week: “I love […]
Read MoreBalmain’s Christophe Decarnin has been in hospital since January
Its been a strange week so far for Paris Fashion Week – what with John Galliano facing imprisonment and Lady Gaga walking for Mugler – but it’s about to get a whole lot worse, as rumours are currently flying around that Balmain creative director Christophe Decarnin has been recovering from depression in a mental health hospital since January.
Read MoreLady Gaga is walking for Thierry Mugler tonight
As Paris Fashion Week officially kicks off today, the talk of the town surprisingly turns to Lady Gaga and news that the eccentric pop star will make her debut catwalk performance down the Thierry Mugler runway this afternoon. Lady G is no stranger to the house of Mugler, as the brands official musical director she’s already helped collaborate on Nicola Formichetti’s Anatomy of Change fashion short film, as well as written the exclusive track Born This Way for his debut menswear collection in January. So it comes as no surprise Nicola’s muse will be strutting her stuff for the brands debut AW11 womenswear collection at PFW does it? Breaking the news on Twitter yesterday, Gaga wrote, ‘I have a monster fashion announcement, are your paws up? I’m so excited I might give birth to a machine gun. I’m making my debut as a runway model, walking in the MUGLER PARIS FASHION SHOW 3/2. I directed the show music, previewing Government Hooker.’ But fear not, you don’t need front row tickets to see such a spectacular event unfold, the good news is the whole show will be live streamed on the Mugler website at 8pm tonight reports Elle UK- phew! We wouldn’t want to miss this for the world!
Read MoreWho will replace John Galliano?
So Galliano’s out. It’s a sad, sorry shame, but it was inevitable (and necessary) in light of his recent racist ramblings. Naturally, the fashion sphere has already begun speculating who’ll replace the enfant terrible – but let’s face it; those are some pretty big pirate boots to fill. With Dior standing by its schedule to show its autumn/winter 2011 collection at Paris Fashion Week on Friday, the pressure’s never been so high to perform – rumour has it some top editors are anxious of attending the house’s show because it’s been tainted with bad publicity – especially with the all-too realistic problem of poor sales looming. Suffice to say, we reckon Dior’s looking to find a new front (wo)man to direct its design pretty pronto, so let’s take a look at the names being thrown around already as possible replacements. 1. Riccardo Tisci Who: Riccardo Tisci, creative director at Givenchy Why: Riccardo Tisci has garnered increasing acclaim since heading Givenchy in 2005. He’s a design genius and he’s bold, but he’s also a safe bet, seeing as he’s already working within the LVMH staple (Givenchy belongs to the luxury conglomerate). And if you believe in history repeating itself, you’ll like this – Galliano was himself heading Givenchy before landing creative director at Dior. 2. Marc Jacobs Who: Marc Jacobs, creative director at Louis Vuitton as well as his eponymous empire Why: Louis Vuitton also lives under LVHM alongside Dior – if the powers that be want to keep it in the family, Marc could be in the running. Question is, is he ready to leave Louis Vuitton? 3. Phoebe Philo Who: Phoebe Philo, creative director at Celine Why: Another designer working under LVMH’s bracket, Celine is also owned by Louis Vuitton Moet Hennessy, making Phoebe Philo another close contender. But […]
Read MoreIt’s official: Galliano’s out at Dior
Who didn’t see this one coming? After suspending the designer pending investigation into his anti-Semitic remarks, Christian Dior has officially announced it’s cut all ties with John Galliano – and his denouncement is effective immediately. The brief statement made by the house’s president, Sidney Toledano, condemns the designer’s statements for contradicting Dior’s values, and confirms that the “odious behaviour” displayed by Galliano in yesterday’s video was the final straw in his firing. “I unequivocally condemn the statements made by John Galliano, which are in total contradiction to the longstanding core values of Christian Dior,” Toledano said in his statement today, Vogue UK reports. Galliano’s dismissal is effective as of today, and the house will now under go proceedings to sack him officially. Dior’s autumn/winter 2011 show at Paris Fashion Week on Friday, however, will go on as normal – without the designer. And now, of course, the speculation mounts as to who will fill Galliano’s incredible shoes…
Read MoreLet’s talk: what does Galliano’s controversy mean for Dior?
Update: John Galliano has now been dismissed from Dior. Read the full story here. We all know the story by now. Last Thursday, John Galliano was arrested at a bar for allegedly making anti-Semitic remarks to a couple drinking at a nearby table. Then Dior made an official statement and suspended its creative director pending further enquiries. Then, yesterday, police ordered Galliano to face his accusers to “find out the truth”, but in the meantime, a video of Galliano spurring racist remarks was leaked onto the internet (below). Then Natalie Portman, face of Miss Dior Cherie, made a statement condemning the designer and saying she was “deeply shocked and disgusted” by his actions and “will not be associated with Mr Galliano in any way.” Watch the video here, but be warned, it contains highly offensive content. It’s an exceptionally strange occurrence. But what we want to know is where this leaves Dior and, more importantly, Galliano. The industry, for the most part, is praising Dior’s decision to suspend dismiss its chief designer (except Franca Sozzani, whose defence piece has now been edited, but we all know she says some stupid stuff) – Dior, after all, has roots steeped in Jewish history and, we suspect, has a fair few Jewish employees, and if the house didn’t react to Galliano’s actions as a PR stunt, you can bet it did on principle. But we wonder if there’s a hidden motive beneath all of this. Galliano’s collections for Dior have taken an increasingly questionable creative path and after years of relative quiet, he’s apparently returned to partying again. So is this controversy a convenient cover up for Dior to oust the British enfant terrible while it can? Perhaps. But perhaps Galliano knows only too well the problems bubbling beneath the surface of the […]

Just when you thought the fashion world couldn’t get any more surprising, news flies around that Christian Dior creative director, John Galliano, has been arrested in Paris for alleged assault – yes, seriously. According to reports on international news agency ATP, via the BBC this morning, the designer was allegedly arrested in a bar after making anti-Semitic remarks and for assault on a couple. Elle UK reports that no definite details of his arrest have been confirmed as of yet, but rumours are most certainly spreading like wild fire across the board. Frankly, we don’t know when he’d have time for all this, but with his up coming Christian Dior AW11 show at Paris Fashion Week imminent, and Kate Moss’s wedding dress) to think about, we think this is one set back Galliano could have done without. We’ll update you on the matter as soon as more news arrives…

Kate Moss is undoubtedly the queen of British style – her effortless fashion sense teamed with her supermodel looks all add up to one ultra trendy lady – and at Paris Fashion Week she was certainly dressed for the fashionable occasion. Opting to dress head to toe in black at the Dior spring/summer 2011 show in Paris, Ms. Moss looked sharp, fierce and (annoyingly) fantastic. The black fur shrug and leather pencil skirt –both by Dior – gave the outfit a welcoming contrast of textures, and her loose-fitting jumper adhered to her casual-chic taste while oversized sunglasses gave the outfit some much-loved star quality. Primped, preened and polished, this mum of one was ready to embrace the French runway and all that John Galliano had to offer – and front row at Dior? We’re too jealous for words.
Read MoreKarl Lagerfeld cancels his PFW show
If you were hoping to see Karl Lagerfeld’s signature eponymous line at Paris Fashion Week next month, you’ll be disappointed – the designer has cancelled his spring/summer 2011 show and has removed himself from the schedule. But not because of timing problems, you understand – rumour has it he’s working on a new, more accessible line. Or masstige, as Karl likes to call it (that’s mass market and prestige, see what he did there?). So we hear over at WWD, the Lagerfeld label will continue in a more commercial effort, with less imput from Karl himself, while he works to develop his masstige collection which, apparently, will make its debut in time for autumn/winter 2011. This should, of course, come as no surprise – he did say a few months ago that he planned to re-enter the mass-market with the house of Lagerfeld , if you care to remember – though it seems we can forget collaborations with high street stores because Lagerfeld’s new label may just be the real luxe-for-less deal. But French fashion fans rest assure Karl will still be in the City of Light in October for Paris Fashion Week – he’s got to show his latest Chanel offering and unveil his capsule collection for Hogan.

Read MoreYou Won’t Believe How Easy It Is To Style Barrel Jeans For Spring (AND Summer)
Let me just start by saying: I’m obsessed with barrel jeans. They’re comfy and effortlessly cool. But styling them can sometimes feel like a puzzle. You know, the kind where you’re staring at your closet thinking, “Is this fashion-forward or just… confusing?” If you’ve ever had that moment of doubt while trying to style these wide-legged wonders, worry not. I’ve put together some great spring/summer barrel jean outfit inspo along with some great tips for styling them for the warmer months! 1. Keep It Simple with a Fitted Top Barrel jeans are all about volume, so the easiest way to balance their loose, wide-leg silhouette is by pairing them with a fitted top. Think a sleek bodysuit. The snug fit of the top creates a flattering contrast, emphasizing your waist and giving you that hourglass shape. If you’re going for a casual look, try a ribbed tank or a plain white baby tee tucked into your high-waisted barrel jeans. Add some heeled sandals, and you’ve got an outfit that’s simple yet chic. If you’re worried about proportions, stick to cropped or tucked-in tops. Leaving your top untucked can make the outfit look bulky and take away from the flattering shape of the jeans. 2.Add Some Structure with a Blazer If you’re looking to smarten up your barrel jeans, a structured blazer is your secret weapon. The tailored fit of the blazer adds polish to the relaxed vibe of the jeans, creating a look that’s equal parts casual and sophisticated. For a classic spring outfit, pair your jeans with a neutral blazer—think beige, camel, or even a soft pastel. Brown suede jackets are still a major trend. Opt for a brown suede jacket for a more on trend look. Underneath, keep it simple with a fitted tank or tee. Want to […]

Read MoreEverything You Need To Know About Styling Baggy Jeans!
Alright, let’s talk about baggy jeans! They’re making a serious comeback, and honestly, it’s about time. Who doesn’t want to feel comfy and chic at the same time? Gone are the days of always squeezing into tight skinny jeans—now, it’s all about that relaxed vibe. There’s something so freeing about baggy jeans. And they’re perfect for just about any occasion, from brunch with the girls to a laid-back date night. Plus, they’re super versatile, so you can dress them up or down with ease. Choosing the right fit baggy jeans 1. Know Your Rise First things first: Decide on the rise. High-rise baggy jeans? Super flattering. They cinch in at the waist, giving you that hourglass vibe even in a loose fit. If you love a classic, vintage look, a high-rise baggy jean is for you. Mid-rise is also a solid choice if you want a more relaxed, ‘90s feel. Low-rise? Risky but totally retro if you can pull it off! Consider your torso length, too. High-rise jeans can make a shorter torso look longer, and a low-rise style might balance out a longer one. So, figure out what works best for your body! SHOP THE LOOK 2. Check the Cut: Relaxed or Super-Baggy? Baggy jeans come in a range of fits, from just a bit roomy to full-on oversized. Ask yourself: how loose do you want to go? Relaxed fit is a bit more subtle; you’ll get a slight drape without the jeans looking overwhelmingly large. Super-baggy jeans, on the other hand, make a statement! Think: ‘90s hip-hop or current street style chic. Experiment! Try on a few pairs to see if you prefer a more laid-back drape or something that’s very obviously oversized. Go with what makes you feel amazing! 3. Length Matters—A Lot Length is a game […]

But to make your trip goes off without a hitch, there are some key things you need to plan and prepare for. We’ve put together this comprehensive guide to help you plan the perfect summer holiday and make sure you don’t forget any of the essentials. Here’s our top 10 tips on what not to forget when planning your next summer getaway! 1. Book your flights and accommodation This may seem obvious, but it’s surprising how many people leave booking flights and hotels to the last minute. Prices can skyrocket close to departure, so get organized early. Search around for flight comparison websites to find the best airfares. And for accommodation, book any hotels or apartments you need as far in advance as possible. Popular destinations book out quickly over peak season. So take the time to lock in your bookings nice and early. That way, you can relax knowing everything is organized ahead of time. 2. Renew your passport It’s a rookie mistake – getting ready to go on holiday only to realize your passport has expired. Avoid disaster by checking your passport validity now. Most countries require passports to be valid for at least 6 months beyond the dates of travel. If you need to renew your passport, it can take 4-6 weeks to process. So don’t leave it until the last minute. Renew your passport with plenty of time to spare. That way, your summer vacation won’t be ruined by an invalid travel document. 3. Get travel insurance No one expects disasters or emergencies to happen on holidays. But travel insurance gives […]
