The purse-friendly models: Alexa Chung for Vera Moda and Daisy Lowe for Peacocks… why?

Events in fashion often occur in twos. Two Kate’s got married in phenomenal dresses in the same year; two high-end designers recently collaborated with US department store Macy’s, and even fashion week happens twice. Even if I am leaning on exaggeration here, there’s a recent mirror image fashion event that just can’t go ignored: fashion’s darling and retro ambassador, Alexa Chung, being snapped up by Danish high street retailer Vera Moda, and fashion model Daisy Lowe posing for Peacocks. Two very beautiful women, with every designer at their beck and call, vying to get them to grace front row, or even better, walk the runway à la Lowe for Chanel. So why would they choose to ‘downgrade’ and represent the high street? It more than surprised me to learn Chung, who is rarely seen without her trademark mini Chanel bag and sporting nothing less than an offhand, vintage-inspired, thrown-together outfit, took on Vera Moda. She’s not exactly a self-confessed admirer of the retailer’s average designs, and I can’t envisage Chung in its creations, either. But Lowe’s venture into high street modelling is a little more understandable. Playing loyal to blood ties, Lowe is the face of her mother Pearl’s autumn/winter collection – her seventh – for purse-friendly retailer Peacocks, and looks a delectable vision in a range of vintage-inspired dresses. But motherly love aside, the question still arises: why Peacocks when PPQ are on tap for this 5’10” beauty? Quite ironically, in fashion terms, I see a ‘trend’ arising. High street mega-brand, H&M, snapped up world-leading models Freja Beha Erichsen, Anja Rubik and Raquel Zimmermann for their spring/summer and autumn/winter 2011 campaigns. Although appearing as a mutually beneficial alliance, frankly speaking they don’t need each other. The chosen models make mega-bucks from the biggest fashion houses, and H&M has a […]

Alexa Chung parties at Madewell store opening

As if you need another reason to head to New York right now, last night Madewell opened its new store on Lower Fifth Avenue, where the coolest kids in fashion partied at a private soiree. The brand may not be big on British shores just yet, but stateside, as our US readers will know, J.Crew’s sister label is loved for its preppy downtown staples, and the celebs are as big a fans as any, not least Alexa Chung, whose debut collection for Madewell was an instant sell-out. Needless to say she was there to celebrate its biggest store yet in NYC’s cool shopping district, alongside fellow style-setters Julia Restoin-Roitfeld and Tennessee Thomas last night. We’re pretty jealous of you yanks right now, but hey, if it means we’re one step closer to getting a Madewell over here we’re all for it. [Elle UK]

Who wore it best? Alexa Chung vs Karen Gillan in Orla Kiely

Two beauties, one dress; and the style-off continues, this time with a pretty organza boat neck dress by Orla Kiely. Dubbed the Queen of prints, Irish designer Orla Kiely has doused everything from kitchenware to handbags in her infectiously kitsch prints, and the cute contrasting flower trim around the neckline of this dress hasn’t gone unnoticed by two of the hottest style setters. Seen at Erdem’s AW11 show during London Fashion Week in February, Alexa Chung’s cutesy take on the Kiely dress won us over. Paired with black platform heels and a jumper tied around the neck, she exuded preppy cool, and with her signature tousled bob, Chanel handbag and minimal makeup, this look makes a perfect transition from day to night. But Doctor Who starlet Karen Gillan gave Alexa a run for her money just this month, working off-screen glamour as she attended the Doctor Who box set signing on April 8 in New York. The Brit beauty’s off-hand daytime look takes this pretty dress from cute to kickass. Karen added definition with a belted waist and solid punch of colour via her vibrant turquoise Miu Miu cross-body bag. Dewy makeup, a glossy red mane and brown ankle boots complete the look (although we do wish the bag was slung off the shoulder, rather than across her entire front). Whose dress-up are you digging? Elle Style Awards 2011 best dressed: Alexa Chung

Considering she was the host of the event it would have been wrong for Alexa Chung to not have made the best dressed list. And let’s face it, when does she not? Wearing a matching crop top and midi-length skirt by Yves Saint Laurent, Alexa stuck to what she does best by choosing an outfit inkeeping with the style she’s now famous for – girly, effortless and very, very cool. She finished off her look with black suede platforms, loosely waved hair and a simple gold pendant. Good work Alexa. But we want to know your thoughts – cast your vote below to have your say! Get the look: Alexa Chung in Chanel Couture

For those fashionistas lucky enough to attend even one of the couture shows in Paris this week, good for you – we’re really not jealous at all. Ahem. But at least we get to spy on what they’re wearing, and today’s pick of the pretty crop is the cool and sophisticated Alexa Chung. Standing outside Chanel’s Paris store before its show yesterday afternoon, Ms. Chung chose to wear a quirky tuxedo dress from the label’s AW10 Couture collection – after all, she loves a bit of androgyny at the best of times – and luckily for fashion fans, achieving Alexa’s sweet style is easier than you might imagine. If, like us, you want to recreate this haute couture look at home, take a peek below – we’ve got it covered.

Alexa Chung at Etam’s fashion show

Etam attracted quite the star-studded crowd at its latest lingerie launch in Paris’s Grand Palais yesterday – Kate Moss came (on the arm of YSL’s Stefano Pilati, no less) to watch boyfriend Jamie Hince perform with the Kills, Beth Ditto sang, as did Boy George and models Natalia Vodianova and Eva Herzigova sat front row – but one caught our discerning eye more than most: Alexa Chung. Swapping thigh-skimming hems for calf-swinging ones, Alexa wore a navy polka dot mid-length dress – fashion’s favourite finish thanks to its Seventies obsession – with a large rust-orange and white flower print and matching pannelled trim. And, becasue no one works a vintage-inspired look quite like Ms. Chung, she teamed her Seventies throw-back dress with a matching skinny belt with chunky black YSL platforms for a cool, contemporary twist. Is that a new darker ‘do we spy as well?

Alexa Chung in Valentino

Alexa Chung has always remained a firm fashion favourite in the trend-setting celeb department with her cute and quirky style, but on the very rare occasion she gets it wrong, boy does she go some. Attending the New York premiere of Anne Hathaway’s latest movie, Love and Other Drugs, the TV presenter opted for a painterly Valentino frock – usually a fail-proof choice – but not on this occasion. We can’t quite put our finger on what is – after all, Valentino’s one of our all-time favourite fashion labels – that makes this Resort 2011 green floral sundress look so out of place on the former fashion model, but it might have something to do with the ill-fitting fabrics and awkward midi heels that make Alexa look old beyond her years. Have we just become too accustomed to her usual grunge-edged get-ups? Either way the dress itself is gorgeous, it’s just not so stunning on Ms. Chung – sorry Alexa.

Alexa Chung in Valentino

Men’s magazine GQ held their 13th annual Men Of The Year Awards in London on Tuesday, and though the bash celebrates male achievements in the past year, it was the girls who stole the show on the red carpet. But it was TV presenter and fashionista Alexa Chung who turned heads with her fashion choice. Looking fabulous, Alexa wore a retro cream jacket and full skirt from Valentino, complete with floral embroidery and a cute bow-tie. We love this fashion-forward attire, but there’s something about the clashing silver Chanel boots Alexa chose to pair with her lady-like ensemble that we’re not too sure about.

Alexa Chung is one well-dressed lady

The Shockwaves NME awards took place on Wednesday and there were some surprising winners and losers. But one winner we are most proud of is Alexa Chung. Nominated for Best Dressed the gorgeous lady was up against her own boyfriend Alex Turner, Brandon Flowers, Noel Gallagher and Noel Fielding. So not only did she beat her rockstar beau, but also won in an all male category. Well done Alexa! She is of course the most stylish of all those nominees, and well as a leader of the fashion pack a style winner every day. She turned up looking fabulous in a very cute black playsuit with lace ruffle collar and ankle boots. This is a girl who knows how to dress. But one woman who doesn’t know how to is Amy Winehouse, she was awarded the worst dressed award. I can’t say I’m hugely surprised, she has failed to be seen in clothes for a very long time. But it wasn’t just Alexa looking lovely at the awards, a special mention must go to style icon in the making Jaime Winstone who was seen in a fabulous hot pink mini and feathered ruff. Pixie looked as gorgeous as ever, true to her punky style she wore a very sexy pair of tights with a great studded leather jacket and framed handbag. Highlights from the awards will be shown on Channel 4 tonight at 7.30pm. If you want to see the full list of winners check out

The collection is due to hit stores in March so you can expect the campaign images to be appearing in a magazine near you soon. It has still not been officially confirmed by New Look or Alexa, but all the signs are there. She’s sure to sizzle and I must say it is a relief not to be writing about another celeb turned designer story. Model turned TV presenter turned fashionista turned model is weirdly a refreshing change, so thank you Alexa.

Alexandra Shulman battles against size zero

At last! Alexandra Shulman, editor of British Vogue and, therefore, one of the most important individuals in the fashion world, has said what we’ve all been thinking. Yes, Shulman has spoken out against the ‘jutting bones and no breasts or hips look’ that designers have been increasingly pushing down the catwalks since the advent of the waif in the 90s. In a letter to a variety of fashion designers and houses – including Karl Lagerfeld, John Galliano, Prada, Versace, Yves Saint Laurent and Balenciaga – Shulman said that Vogue was being supplied with minuscule sample garments which forced them to hire tiny models which the magazine then had to airbrush to look larger and appeal to readers.

Fresh Ways To Style The Classic Ankle Boot This Winter

For many of us, ankle boots are the ultimate winter footwear staple. They go with just about everything and can be dressed up or down with very little effort. Pair with jeans and an oversized coat for a casual daytime look, or team with a classic LBD to put a fresh twist on evening wear for the winter. There are countless ways to work this comfortable, statement piece into just about any outfit combination. A winter-appropriate take on evening wear Eveningwear is perhaps one of the most difficult ways to work the ankle boot, but it can be done with the right styling. Take a leaf out of Alexa Chung and Jessica Stein’s books by using boots to add a tough element to an otherwise feminine outfit. The more fanciful the dress the better, as the boots help to give this girly ensemble a cool, edgy vibe that stands high above the rest of the fashion pack. This look is particularly workable if you’re a little taller, as ankle boots make a welcome change to skyscraper heels.   Keep it cosy with slouchy jumpers and midi skirts Much like dresses, skirts don’t typically lend themselves to being paired with boots that cut off at the ankle. If you style this the right way, you’re on to a winner – it’s a fresh look that was seen everywhere this London Fashion Week. The trick to making this look work is all about balancing the proportions. Petite girls might prefer to opt for boots with a heel, as midi skirts have the potential to give the illusion of shorter legs when paired with flats. Add shape to the rest of the outfit by tucking in a slouchy jumper or tshirt and keep jackets to waist length. Long duster coats look great with […]

Nail Experts The Walker Sisters Share Their Top Tips For Success…

The brains behind the Rococco Nail collection (which is adored by both industry professionals and beauty lovers alike), sister duo, Ange and Vernice Walker are renowned experts in their field. Personally requested  by designer Roland Mouret to develop a polish exclusively for his autumn/winter 2012 collection, the Walker sisters consult and have worked with a number of top designers and celebs including Burberry, Alexa Chung, Kelly Rowland and Cheryl Cole. We spoke with Ange and Vernice about everything from how to achieve healthy nails and their top tip for success… What’s your morning routine? Ange: I usually wake up quite early each morning as I’m excited to get going with the current project. After a quick look at the emails I’ll take about an hour for myself; I enjoy aromatherapy baths or showers as these allow me to have some peaceful time and space to think about my plans for the day and get into a positive frame of mind! Clarins Bath and Shower Concentrate is toning, aromatic and invigorating and the Scholl Velvet Smooth Express Pedi Wet & Dry quickly buffs, massages and stimulates my feet. I have very sensitive skin on my face so try to be gentle. A mild cleanser followed by Chantecaille face and eye serum keeps things simple yet treated and I always use an SPF moisturiser to protect my skin. I don’t usually eat breakfast or anything before 10am but do love the ritual of making freshly squeezed lemon or ginger tea with a little honey to cleanse and wake up the senses. My work wardrobe consists of mainly dresses, jeans, and blazers and I only wear pieces that I feel great in. Vernice: My mornings can be so varied depending on what project we are working on. A few things that are consistent are moisturising head […]

Barbour still reigns supreme

The Barbour jacket – it’s as quintessentially English as Big Ben and Pimms. While this iconic brand was once the uniform of rural aristocracy (think polo playing girls and pigeon shooting gents), a growing celebrity fan base including Kate Middleton, Little Mix’s Perrie Edwards, Alexa Chung and former boyfriend Alex Turner have made it both mainstream and seriously cool. The trend is showing no sign of losing its appeal. With everyone wearing theirs a little differently, the Barbour is not only a style must-have, but a very flexible one too. Countryside chic Princess Diana can be credited with single-handedly bring the Barbour jacket to the masses. Wearing a green Barbour for a more casual, relaxed look, she was the poster girl for the fabulous ‘Sloane Ranger’ look that would later lead to a rise in sales of not only Barbour but Harris Tweed and Hunter wellingtons. Still a strong look for strolling in the great outdoors, wear the green Barbour with a thick knit jumper and high-waisted tweeds. Girly cool Back in 2007 Lily was at the forefront of the new Barbour wave, wearing her waxed Barbour jacket over a hoody and bright pink dress throughout her performance at Glastonbury. Instantly making Barbour accessible and effortlessly cool, a whole host of celebs followed suit and built Barbour into their festival fashions, and later into urban wear too. Make like Fearne Cotton and Alexa Chung by teaming the classic black waxed Barbour with cord collar with short, girly dresses or A-line skirts. Smart and masculine And if you thought Barbour was just for the ladies, think again.
