Our guide to shopping the Christmas sales

Some of you will be so wrapped up in Christmas presents this morning you’ll have barely remembered the Boxing day sales have started… who are we kidding? Any seasoned shopper worth her wardrobe will have set her alarm especially early this morning to sift out the savviest steals the stores have got to offer! But a sale should never be approached without a thorough plan of what’s worth stashing up on and what’s not worth the 15-people queue, and since you’ve been so busy buying presents and preparing the turkey, we’ve made one for you. With tips on what’s worth its weight in gold and what to avoid at all costs, follow our steps below to the do’s and don’t’s of Christmas sale shopping… DO buy anything floral. It’s a perennial favourite that’ll prove super versatile come spring. DON’T buy rich, boozy colours. We may have gulped them up this winter, but come next season we’ll be looking for a brighter beverage. DO buy into neon. A hot pink tee here, a fluro-striped skirt there – it’s spring’s favourite fad, and since you won’t be wearing them forever, it makes sense to snap them up cheap. DON’T buy jewel tones. Autumn loves a deep, punchy palette, but next season’s all about the softer shades. On that note, DO buy pastels for reasons above. DON’T buy heritage tweeds. Tailoring comes much softer next spring, and unless you’re a country bumpkin, it’s time to pack away the posh past. DO buy pleated skirts. We saw them everywhere from Celine to Burberry, making them spring’s key skirt shape. DON’t buy Dalmatian print. Autumn might have loved this trend, but next season there’s not a dog’s dot in sight. DO buy anything striped, especially bottoms. Pyjama pants are spring’s soft alternative to tailored trousers. […]

Beat the blizzard with these super stylish, snow-proof pieces!

The weather outside is frightful – at least it will be come tomorrow. With snow set to blast through much of Britain after nightfall, we have a feeling it’s going to get freezing around here. Thanks, weather man. So let’s cue the annual conundrum: what the hell should one wear to stay warm and stylish in the snow? Are your waterproofs actually keeping the wet out? Will your jeans soak through? Is yetti a step too far? Don’t worry! We’ve hunted down the hottest snow-proof wears that promise to keep you dapper and dry when the frozen stuff falls – and the best part is they’ll work for a whole bundle of other winter weather conditions, too. SNO belted ski jacket, £95, available at Topshop. Do we really need to justify this hilarious sweater? It’s genius, and yes, we’re still giggling. Chalet sweat by Ashish, £55, available at Topshop. Worse than snow? Sludge. Prevent slipping and keep your feet dry with a pair of fool-proof wellies – we love Hunter’s Carnaby snake print versions for a slick touch. Hunter Carnaby Boa snake boot, £150, available at my-wardrobe. Ok, so these skinnies aren’t strictly snow-proof, but their wax coating will help the wet run off (and aren’t they, well, gorgeous?). Moto wet look coated skinny jeans, £40, available at Topshop. Leather gloves aren’t just sleek and stylish, they keep the wet out, too. This pair from By Malene Birger with a contrasting cream underside are especially chic. By Malene Birger […]

Get the look: Alexa Chung in Miu Miu

Long-time Miu Miu fan Alexa Chung looked super-stylish at the label’s show in Paris earlier this month. Wearing a trademark heritage-girly ensemble, she looked feminine and sweet, and did an excellent job at flying the flag for us Brits in Paris. And since she’s (almost) single-handedly responsible for the resurgence of peter pan collars, it’s really no surprise that she chose to wear this white ruffled peter pan collared blouse from Miu Miu. She paired it with a cute navy check pinafore dress, also by Miu Miu, an adorable pair of black satin bow heels and a studded super-sized clutch bag by Valentino. The good news? With a bit of know how, anyone can recreate this look with ease. Here’s how: The foundation for this look is a beautifully cut ruffled blouse. This one from Moschino Cheap & Cheap might blow your budget but, you have to admit, it is rather gorgeous. Moschino Cheap & Chic lace ruffle front blouse, £450, available at my-wardrobe. Next, opt for a navy v-neck sleeveless dress to recreate Alexa’s pinafore-style look. This classic Prince of Wales check dress from Stella McCartney is the perfect shape and will prove super versatile for your wardrobe. Stella McCartney Prince of Wales check dress, £855, available at Matches. A black bow pump adds a sweet chicness to Alexa’s look – try these cute flats from Oasis as a purse-friendly option. Annabella bow ballerina pumps, £25, available at Oasis. Add to this a giant neutral-toned clutch and you’re onto a winner. This studded one from Topshop is the next best thing to Alexa’s Valentino beauty. Grey mixed stud clutch, £25, available at Topshop.

London Fashion Week SS12: Burberry Prorsum

Who: Burberry Prorsum What: Autumnal tones, trademark slim-fit trench coats, woven fabrics and wooden beading; creating an affinity with both nature and a hint of Africa. Highlights: Textured woven wools set in coloured stripes, ethnic-style prints featuring 3D wooden shapes as embellishment and peaked caps bearing oversized pom poms. Lowlights: It’s a sumptuous colour palette, but the plums, burnt oranges and earthy green tones feel more akin to autumn. Overall: If Christopher Bailey’s best seasons are in the winter, he sure as hell knows it. The designer has played his strength to his advantage next season, and for spring 2012 delivers a palette rich in leafy tones with a plethora of jackets to boot. It’s no surprise – Burberry’s heritage lies in its outerwear, after all – that Bailey should show such a collection, and if he anticipates a sun-less summer next year, we’re sure as hell joining him for the ride. High-waisted skirts, softly fluted at the hem, floated to mid-calves and were teamed with fitted knits that were woven in crochet stripes with wooden beads attached. More beads decorated necklines and shoulders of tops and gradually transformed into multi-coloured shapes on jackets. Shoes were also beaded, as were waist-cinching belts that are bound to replicated everywhere next spring. Slinky silk shirts in sumptuous mustard sat alongside punchy plums, slate blues, earthy greens and rusty oranges, some of which appeared together in graphic, African-inspired prints on jackets and gathered draped skirts with over-sized ties. Coats – spanning belted leather trenches to enlarged bubble parkers – were textured and grainy, and came with various forms of detail from beaded collars to leather-bound edges. For all it’s wintry appearance, Christopher Bailey has delivered perhaps one of the most wearable collections from Burberry for several seasons – and you’ll be glad to […]

Shoe Shenanigans: Christian Louboutin vs YSL

News of Christian Louboutin’s legal defeat against YSL has spread like wildfire. The French shoe designer’s red-soled reign was quashed, as Judge Marrero refused to afford his world-renowned red-soled shoes trademark protection. A victory for rival fashion house, YSL – their red-soled shoes from the Resort 2012 collection were the culprits in question – but is it a well deserved one? It’s a difficult one to side on; Louboutin’s have been the linchpin of shoe wardrobe enthusiasts and serious style mavens around the globe since their lacquered red-sole inception nineteen years ago. The red-sole has been Louboutin’s distinctive selling point – something he has monopolised on, but YSL is a mammoth fashion house with equal right to consult any colour palette for their collections, without fear of legal action. Considering Louboutin’s have a cult celebrity following and nearly every outfit we see on the red carpet today is accompanied by a pair, maybe trademark protection shouldn’t be the biggest of worries for the shoe maestro. His shoes will sell, regardless of sole sharing – and when you have a temporary shoe sole fix in the form of 16-year-old Irish entrepreneur Tara Haughton’s ingenious shoe stickers; how many battles are you really going to fight, Mr Louboutin? Louboutin’s are expensive. Accepted. But imagine your charitable credentials and the state of your bank balance if you mustered the courage to buy the most expensive flip flops ever made. At $18,000 (£11,000) – equivalent of the equally extortionate rent paid by The Camerons for a luxury villa retreat in Tuscany for their recent holiday – the David Palmer hand painted sandals from Chipkos guarantee to save 100,000sq feet of endangered rainforest land. Now, as a charitable species, we’re naturally supposed to jump at the opportunity of giving, but seriously, $18,000? Wouldn’t it be […]

The Three Mul-bears: Mulberry adds baby Carter to its burgeoning brood of arm candy

Almost rhyming with latest Beckham tot and in its own right still a baby, allow us to introduce Carter: the newest member of the heritage English brand, Mulberry. The latest staple-to-be AW11 offering plays up to the typical Mulberry character: functional and aesthetically pleasing with an edge. The Carter bag promises thrice the style potential, appearing in ‘Mini’, ‘Camera Bag’ and ‘Double Handle’ form and has quite possibly won us over – albeit three times. That’s not to say we won’t be optioning on our favourite, but first let’s dissect its design credentials and see what sets the Carter apart from Emma Hill’s previously celebrated creations. Starting with the Carter Double Handle bag; the largest of the trio and a refreshing alternative to the repeated satchel style Mulberry is so famed for, it features the brand new double lock front plaque and twisted leather and chain double handle. Presented in multipurpose Birds Nest (a stone shade), Midnight and Black, were coveting the Midnight Croc Nappa version, and were not the only ones. A-listers Emma Watson and Kirsten Dunst were a sweet vision, spotted occupying their forearms with the Carter Double Handle. Staying true to our fight for luxury bags you can fit your life into, were saying yes to the Double Handle Carter which provides ample storage inches – well worth its ample £995 price tag. Next in line sits the Carter Camera Bag. A downsized version with the same design features and colour variations, except an added extra which is actually the one we’re coveting: the Fox Brown Suede version. The Camera Bag is a fuss-free bag hoarder’s ideal companion – fitting in the essentials, but not as space consuming as the Carter Double Handle. We like how it meets the middle ground perfectly and the adjustable twisted leather […]

Accessory Adventures: Dana Kellin Diamond Pendant

Yes, it’s a diamond necklace, but not as you know it. Forget the predictable solemnity of a solitaire stone hanging limp from a chain, Dana Kellin’s design reinvents the diamond pendant as a no mere thing of beauty, but an eye catching piece brimming with personality. Arranged mosaic style on a bed miniature gold pieces,  the uncut diamonds lack the pomp of over-polished stones and gleam even brighter against the pendent’s gold wire frame. Big, bold and oh so beautiful  the pendant may say statement, but the long and delicate gold chain says laid back, making it versatile enough to glitter both day and night. This season the catwalks have been overflowing with seventies inspired looks, and even the quickest glance at the autumn catwalks will reveal that the trend shows no signs of slowing down. If you’re not ready to go all out in top to toe Halston Heritage, this piece is the perfect nod to the trend. With the pendant’s round, discus shape and gold finishing, the necklace references glitzy late Seventies glamour and captures just that little bit of disco diva chic, while its contemporary design makes it nothing less than timeless. Dana Kellin Diamond Pendent, £450, available at Astley Clarke

Gucci teams up with Fiat to relaunch the special edition 500byGucci

If Citroen and Chanel are to your France what the Mini and Mulberry are to your Britain, then consider Fiat and Gucci your Italy, because iconic Italian companies have joined forces to create the Fiat 500byGucci.   To celebrate the 150th anniversary of Italy's unification and Gucci's 90th birthday, cult car company Fiat has teamed up with luxury label Gucci to redesign its classic 500 car model with Frida Giannini at the helm.   And in a world where collaborations crop up all too often, this partnership actually makes perfect sense.   Gucci's creative director has worked alongside Fiat's Centro Stile on what is, quite frankly, the coolest collaboration of the year in launching the special edition car, which comes with custom Gucci aesthetics for the ultimate in luxury mechanics.   Available in either white or black – we'll take the latter, please – the all-new design features the signature red and green stripe running on the exterior and inside on seats and belts, a bi-colour steering wheel and two-tone leather seats boasting Gucci's trademark Guccissima print.   Look outside, and you'll find interlocking GG's on the alloys and the Gucci signature on the rear and side doors.  And if you want to get technical, the 500byGucci's available with in two engines – the economical 1.2 litre (£14,565) and the award-winning 0.9 litre TwinAir (£15,765).   But hey, don't hold it against us if all we're bothered about is how hot it looks.  With careful finishing touches that correspond inside and out, this car feels like the sleekest, sweetest ride around – we're already picturing a cruise around Campania in the Southern Italy sun whilst wasting the hours sampling the best pizza and gelato in the province.   Oh, come on, we can dream.   The Fiat 500byGucci is […]

WATCH: five minutes with Louise Roe

The last time we spoke to Louise Roe was back in 2008 when, unbeknownst to her, she was eyeing up TV jobs in America that would become her biggest career move to date. But that was three years ago – now, she’s a regular on the fashion circuit in the US, after hosting countless TV shows and appearing on endless others. When she’s not reporting live from the Oscars’ red carpet or fronting royal wedding coverage for one of America’s leading entertainment channels, she’s supporting brands, penning articles, appearing on the party scene with aplomb and dishing out style advice. Which reminds us – she’s just become a new ambassador for Weight Watchers. To celebrate the lifestyle brand’s ProPoints plan (the most successful to date in its 15-year history), Louise has shared some of her best-kept style secrets to help women look and feel fabulous no matter what their shape and size. We caught up with her at the press launch yesterday to find out more about the collaboration, her top style tips for the season and who, out of Britain and LA, has the best style… Filmed on a Flip Cisco UltraHD www.theflip.com

Lusting after: Mulberry’s newest member, the Taylor

Just like James Brown’s Pappa, Mulberry‘s got a brand new bag (and we’ll level with you, it’s a little bit lovely). At the risk of sounding terribly predictable, Mulberry’s latest bag family for pre-AW11 is guaranteed to leave more than a few lustful looks in its path, and we feel its only fair that you guys share our pain. Meet the Taylor. She might be flaunting heritage shapes but she’s a modern missus, with elegant country details, a rich colour palette and seasonal accents to keep her contemporary. She’s wonderfully lady-like, and luckily, comes in three sizes – satchel (ideal for everyday), oversized satchel (perfect for weekends and picnics) and mini satchel (great for evenings) – each as sumptuous as the other, with the option of matte leather or luxe Ostrich for touch-me finish. She’s available in three colours, too – mole grey, deer brown or, our favourite, bright cabbage – and features signature gold zips and hardware, external pockets, buckles and cross-body straps for the kind of cool glamour every Mulberry girl loves. But she’ll set you back, big time. At her smallest, she’s £525; at her largest, she’s £950. The Mulberry Taylor is available at Mulberry now. Anyone want to lend us a grand?

Love or Hate: Missoni Zigzag Dress

So British Summer Time is officially upon us, and what better way to celebrate the shift to lighter evenings and warmer weather than with a sunny little addition to your wardrobe? I feel like I’ve been wearing chunky knits, scarves and various other forms of woollen accessories for an aeon. But this cute Missoni zigzag dress is bright, breezy and oh-so-chic. The luxury Italian label is famed for producing iconic knitwear prints and this dress sums its aesthetic up perfectly.  The pattern – a mix of black, white, green, orange and purple zigzags – is constructed in a fine-quality knit material and the slim straps and square neck give it an elegant finish. If I was to wear this dress, I’d take inspiration from Margherita Missoni, the heiress to the fashion house. She’s got that laid-back, glamorous, bohemian vibe going on and wears Missoni with simple sandals, huge sunglasses, a slick of coral lipstick and Mediterranean sun-kissed skin. All perfectly achievable, providing the Italians whisk a bit of their nice weather our way… Missoni zigzag Dress, £718, available at Matches. BUY NOW!

AW11 trend report

We haven’t even started wearing our spring strings yet and already everyone’s talking about autumn – we don’t blame them, though, good things are coming to a closet near you next season. If you want to stay ahead of the frolic (and let’s face it, it’s no fun coming last), we’ve rounded up the hottest trends from the autumn/winter 2011 runways that you won’t want to miss. Stay psyched, we’ll be wearing them sooner than we’d like to admit… Spots Marc Jacobs, David Koma, Stella McCartney Go dotty, literally, for spots and circles next autumn as anything round rules the runway – perennial polkas and Dalmatian drops included. Marc Jacobs layered spotted separates and accessories, David Koma couldn’t resist adding pom poms and Stella McCartney’s laser-cut circles became infectious. Colour Jaeger, Roksanda Ilincic, Jonathan Saunders Good news if you’re a partial to a colour pop, the autumn runways picked up where spring stopped and sent a riot of colour to rival a rainbow. Reds add a contemporary edge to classic camels while vivid primary pops break up black and brighten warm autumnal shades. Monochrome Julien Macdonald, Giles, Louis Vuitton Not braving the bold? Try black and white, instead. When colour wasn’t clattering the catwalk, monochrome was making just as much of an impact, especially at Julien Macdonald where signature jewel shades were swapped for gothic blacks and at Giles and Louis Vuitton where bondage-style straps took the darkside to the depths of dominatrix. Texture Marni, Aquascutum, Fendi If you’re partial to sequins, suede and fur, here’s your chance to wear it all at once. Texture is all or nothing next season and more, as they say, is more. Sumptuous silks, soft fur, lace and leather team together for a luxe look, tweeds and knits offer a smattering of the countryside, […]

London Fashion Week AW11: Aquascutum

Who: Aquascutum What: Modern minimalism, clean lines and colour pops Thoughts: Aquascutum’s autumn/winter 2011 collection is the first under Joanna Sykes’ creative direction, and what a path she’s paved. Combining her signature clean cuts with the label’s rich British heritage, English Icons feels like a fresh approach for Aquascutum, but it’s all the better for it. Outerwear is key, of course, taking traditional winter staples like the trench, field jacket and pea coat and translating them into something altogether more contemporary with tonal colour blocking, exaggerated proportions and a playful mix of textures – English tweeds, mohair, leather, suede, shearling. They’re sleek, but the occasional slouchy parker or puff jacket give an air of relaxed Nineties nonchalance. Traditional tailoring is given a new lease of life with clean cuts and matching separates worn together for a powerful statement, especially when injected with splashes of vivid orange and electric blue in gentle geometry. But amidst the modern minimalism there’s femininity, too, best seen in loose, long silk dresses and jumpsuits in soft slate shades and midnight blue, or sheer chiffon blouses in blush. And making a debut appearance, there’s accessories to boot – quite literally. Structured, pared-down ankle or knee-high boots with subtle coloured panels in a mix of suede, deerskins and tough saddle leather and grown-up, sophisticated bags with charming hardware form the perfect finish to this incredibly wearable-but-cool collection. Keeping Aquascutum’s roots but reinterpreting them into something very clever, Sykes’ inaugral collection for the British heritage label is nothing short of amazing – and we want it all. [Images]

London Fashion Week AW11: Vivienne Westwood Red Label

Who: Vivienne Westwood Red Label What: AW11 Red Label collection, filled to the brim with Vivienne’s signature colourful quirky style. Thoughts: After an agonising wait, it was time to catch a first hand glimpse into one of the Britain’s most extravagant runway shows. We have to admit, we truly adore Vivienne Westwood, so when the time came to take our place inside the Royal Court of Justice at London’s Strand, our hearts were beating a little frantically with excitement. And what a show it was – wacky, crazy, colourful and eccentric are just a few adjectives that spring to mind. The collection was undeniably stunning, with oversized spray-painted hair, gold leaf face paint, statement plush red crown hats (some of which were made out of hair) and multicoloured oversized circus shawls. Makeup was clown-inspired, tailored black velvet suits were sharp and, naturally, her trademark check and tartan strip was out in full force, making way for a truly out of this world show – and one we’d gladly relive. Our highlight was catching a sneaky glimpse of one of Westwood’s Red Nose Day Shakespeare T-shirts peering through a grey shirt and blue-orange tartan two-piece, as well as seeing British model Daisy Lowe strutting her stuff down the runway – nice touch, Viv.

London Fashion Week AW11: Mulberry

Who: Mulberry What: Quintessentially English countryside meets grown-up glamour with signature Mulberry quirk sprinkled amidst a friendly forest of woodland creatures. Thoughts: If you go down to the woods today you’re sure of a nice surprise. Much like it’s pre-fall collection, Mulberry’s offering for autumn/winter 2011 is a woodland-inspired wonderland, full of fantastical furry creatures and clothes to match. Opening with An English Country Garden and a reading from Road Dahl’s Fantastic Mr Fox, Mulberry transformed Claridges’ Ballroom once again into a magical wild wonderland, this time smothered in pretty moss foliage, birds on branches, furry animals and overhead tweeting. A rich colour palette of new-season neutrals and autumnal earthy shades – try fox brown, conker, dark heather, red onion and winter white – are accented with intense pops of colour – cabbage, hedgehog bronze, foxglove pink and lavender – for an eccentric walk on the wild side next autumn. Longer lengths and sumptuous textures see oversized coats layered with delicate silk dresses and chunky knit cardigans flung over full-lengths – the Mulberry girl may have gone a little glam next season, but she’s prim, proper and patriotic, too. Coats are cosy and practical – quilted macs, trench coats, boyfriend jackets, nostalgic duffles and oversized poacher jackets – whilst knits are super soft and super sized, seeing signature checked scarves in sumptuous angora casually wrapped around necks for a simple but striking statement. Dresses are designed for statement, with strong, structured shapes or soft ethereal floor-sweepers with delicously delicate details. Some come cool – a bronze lurex maxi or a phesant green Sixties mid-length – and some come classic – a romantic full pleated shirt dress, but all are effortlessly contemporary. Onto the bags, the Bayswater’s been given poacher-style straps and stud closures to form the Heritage Bayswater satchel. Fox […]

London Fashion Week AW11: Jaeger

Who: Jaeger London What: British elegance in bright block colours, colonial references, relaxed tailoring and classic signatures with a contemporary edge. Thoughts: Among the dark collections we’ve seen so far, Jaeger offers a bright breath of air next season. Nude and blacks are still dominant in the luxury label’s autumn/winter 2011 collection, but they’re offset against bright pops of crayloa colours. A jewelled blue dress here and a fuschia shirt there is teamed with black for the ultimate colour contrast, while camel separates are injected with flashes of scarlett red for an especially contemporary take on classic designs. The winter coat – a Jaeger signature – plays a pivotal role for autumn, appearing in dramatic maxi lengths, sleeveless clean cuts, exaggerated capes and cropped shapes in rich textures. Detail is key here – oversized lapels, buckles and collars lined with fur or shearling. Dogstooth prints proudly reflect the label’s British heritage, as do Prince of Wales checks and sumptuous wools – an extravagance that leads into eveningwear with jewel silk dresses, colour-shock chiffon blouses and sleek jet blacks. Knitwear adds a rich texture to Jaeger’s autumn collection, appearing in mohair, cashmere and sculpted wool jerseys in neutral blushes and punchy earthy tones – shapes are oversized, falling just above the knee with ribbed cuffs or finish loosely at the hip. Bags remain classic but are finished with feather straps, textured panels, buckles and padlocks whilst shoes take on a simplistic yet contemporary approach – strapped sandals with wide leather cuffs have contrasting coloured heels, knee-high boots fall wide and textured and ankle boots come bright and patent. Our favourite part? Black socks with contrasting colour pop toes and heels – an especially fun touch to this directional collection.

Rihanna asked to tone down her Brit Award performance

Last night, the 02 Arena in London played host to the 2011 annual Brit Awards ceremony with many a lyrical talent on stage, but one in particular was asked to tone down her raunchy set for the British public – yep, you guessed it… Rihanna! Her provocative S&M video has been under media scrutiny ever since it hit our TV screens, with Radio 1 refusing to play the song, being banned in 11 countries worldwide and now facing a lawsuit from American photographer David LaChapelle – talk about a global uproar, eh? Although Rihanna may have sugar coated some of her more risque lyrics for last night’s performance, she certainly wasn’t about to skimp on the outfit front, and dressed in a lace bodice with matching knickers and a flesh coloured body-suit underneath, the stunning pop star certainly brought back the sexual undertones to the song. On the red carpet however, Rihanna could be seen with few more clothes on, namely an eye popping Haute Couture Christian Dior gown, no less – complete with a purple floral bodice, mustard yellow waist sash and an enormous ruffled tulle lower half, the eccentric star proved she’s no stranger when it comes to a splash of vibrant colour. According to the Daily Mail, the Bajan beauty picked up the award for Best International Female Solo Artist on the night, handed by our very own Cheryl Cole, who seemed eager to meet her celebrity ‘girl crush’ in person. Take a look at Rihanna’s medley performance at the 2011 Brit Awards below… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0EobjtO1_18

Heavily pregnant actress, Natalie Portman, looks positivley blooming in this crisp white Azarro grecian inspired gown- she’s not one for loose fitting maternity wear after all. Hilary Swank comes over all pastel and girly on us in this stunning nude blush Versace number- the wrap around effect and pleated fishtail both look undeniably stunning on the toned actress. Claire Danes looked ready for spring in this stunning floral Louis Vuitton gown- the intricate ruffles and cinched in waist made way for an absolute style stealer! January Jones surprisingly steered clear of all things Versace, opting to spread her style wings with designer Carolina Herrera- the black and gold mermaid infused frock was certainly an interesting, yet, glamourous substitute. Sexy senorita Eva Longoria wore a stunning pale panelled Hobeika gown to last night’s event- with a rather seductive plunging neckline to match- well, it just wouldn’t be Eva without one would it? Proving that royal blue is still the colour favourite of the moment, Modern Family actress, Sofia Vergara, certainly dressed to impress in this figure hugging Roberto Cavalli stunner- showing off her curvacious figure to utter perfection! Johnny Rocket’s a name that should need no introduction, but what the heck, we’re going to give you one anyway. When John Pearce launched his jewellery label back in 1997, he had no idea it was going to become one of Britain’s most iconic accessories brands – but he’d hoped it would be. Quickly catching the eyes of all the people that matter in music and celebrity cultures, it was the fashion industry that first saw Johnny Rocket’s potential for super-stardom when he sealed deals to collaborate with Tom Ford and Julien Macdonald, among others, to create his signature innovative designs that fuse edgy rock-spirit with intricate expertise. Making somewhat of a name for itself as a coveted cool and quirky company, creative commissions have flown through the door for Johnny Rocket – he created Jamiroqui’s iconic warrior headdress, Kylie’s legendary hotpants and a bespoke Swarovski-encrusted guitar for the Darkness frontman Justin Hawkins among the rest. But Johnny Rocket’s no longer a one-man brand – in 2002, when Pearce was working on a diamond-embellished Ford KA with Julien Macdonald, he met Niall Paisley, an esteemed jeweller, who soon became a partner. Fast-forward to today, though, and Johnny Rocket’s been working its magic on a new project – with diet Coke, as it would happen, creating limited edition Swarovski-embellished bottles exclusively for Selfridges, where John will also be appearing today to help customers customise their own versions. We caught up with Johnny Rocket last week to find out more about the diet Coke collaboration, what makes jewellery so special, and what sparkle we should be looking out for this season… You’ve just announced a collaboration with diet Coke to create a limited edition collection of bottles – how did the collaboration come about? diet Coke approached me about working with them […]

Five minutes with Richard Sorger

After bursting onto the design scene four years ago, Richard Sorger’s quickly made a name for himself as one of Britain’s brightest ones to watch. Having dressed the classics – Cindy Crawford, Heidi Klum, Jennifer Lopez – and the cools – Courtney Love and Kate Beckinsale – Sorger’s signature couture-embellished designs have become some of the most coveted among the A-list and those in the know. So much so, in fact, he’s been commissioned to create special pieces for Swarovski and the Victoria and Albert Museum, and has collaborated with ASOS on an exclusive capsule collection to boot, bringing his intricate high-end pieces to the high street. More recently, though, the designer has been working on his own newly-launched diffusion line, RJS, which showed for the first time at London Fashion Week last month to rave reviews with the likes of Elle Macpherson and Amber Rose sitting front row. What’s more, he’s just teamed up with Wonderbra to judge the lingerie label’s Full Effect competition, where he’s pledged to spend the day with the winner of the stylist experience fitting and customising his trademark A-Z dress especially for them. We caught up with Richard last week to hear more about his exciting partnership with Wonderbra, what inspires his RJS line, and to see what’s in store from him for spring… Obviously we’re here to talk to you about your involvement in the new Wonderbra Full Effect competition, but before we get down to the bare essentials, we must congratulate you on your latest collection for spring/summer 2011! Can you tell us a bit about it? I showed the collection in the Masonic temple at the Andaz Liverpool Street Hotel, which is an awe-inspiring marble room with tiled floors, leather thrones and a ceiling decoration of astrological symbols. I also collaborated […]

180 years of Woolrich

Known for their rich heritage of quality outdoor wear and signature range of plaid jackets and woolen work-wear, Woolrich isn’t exactly the kind of lust-after brand we’re used to. But this year they celebrate 180 years of the brand and to mark the occasion they have released a special limited edition anniversary collection – and let us tell you, it’s really rather cool. The capsule collection for AW10 comprises just 17 pieces for men and women with only 180 pieces produced for each item. And just so you know you’re getting a true collectable every piece has been individually numbered with anniversary labelling. The styles, which include a great ranch style plaid jacket and the classic ‘Charley Brown’ jacket, have been taken from the depths of the Woolrich archives and have been re-worked for a contemporary look. We love the original images from the archives which accompany the latest interpretations of the pieces – especially loving the couple in matching outfits. The traditional outdoor wool and shearling Ranch coat that they are sporting so well has been re-worked in Woolrich’s signature red plaid with a shearling collar and real horn buttons. It’s a really wearable on-trend piece and these kind of coats are going to be everywhere come next season so getting a true heritage piece will put you one step ahead of the rest. The ‘Charley Brown’ jacket was a favourite with fans throughout the 60s – 80s and with a tagline – ‘Where the girls are is where the Charley Brown is’ – we can see why. Featuring handpicked archive fabrics, chamois suede collar and cuffs and cashmere lining this jacket is a great investment buy for AW that will be a real heritage piece. The Woolrich AW10 heritage collection will be available to next season via the […]

Chloe press day AW2010

We were just a tad excited to be invited to the AW2010 Chloe press day and were even more so when we arrived and got to sneak a peek at the (drum roll please…) Darla shoulder bag – the most recent addition to the Chloe family. Pictured above and just below, the Darla nods to a 60s aesthetic, with a refined and elegant style that captures the feel of Mulberry’s Bayswater or Hermes’ Birkin. Available in a broad colour palette and a range of luxurious fabrics including box and nubuck calfskin, the chic Darla is sure to be the go-to bag for stylish women on the go. While the ‘it bag’ may be seen as a thing of the past, the traditional-looking Darla looks to be stepping in, affirming itself as the new bag to take notice of. The terracotta and deep purple versions were our top picks for the coming season, while the calfskin (treated like leopard print pony skin) goes for ultimate luxury that begs to be touched – and is perhaps more of an acquired taste. The popular Sally style has also made a welcome return in the same fabric as the Darla, offering an evening bag alternative to its travel-inspired sibling. Whilst the Chloe bags ultimately stole the show, most of the presentation was actually reserved for the fashion house’s youthful, secondary line: See by Chloe. With shoes, bags and a selection of clothing on show, we were especially excited to see that the younger brand has kept hold of that fun yet feminine personality throughout the entire collection. With sleek, heeled chelsea boots, over-the-knee suede boots and wooden wedge slingbacks forming a portion of the shoe collection, See by Chloe look to be acknowledging the trends of recent seasons (and even spring/summer 2010 with those […]

Louis Vuitton: Journey of a Man’s Wardrobe, London.

It’s been a tale of many cities; taking in culture and influences from around the world, Louis Vuitton and The Selby have escorted us on the far-reaching journey of a man’s wardrobe and today the final stop on the map is released. It began in Paris, at the heart of the brand, with a visit to the family home and workshop in Asnieres, before taking in the studio and the buzz of a ready-to-wear men’s catwalk show in the centre of the city. Next on the whistle-stop tour we visited the diverse city of Shanghai where we were introduced to one of China’s most influential designers Les Suen, before moving on to the cosmopolitan city of Tokyo, where MC Verbal and designers Tatsuya Matsui and Yasumichi Morita were our cultural guides. Next it was New York – the big city with even bigger personalities. After meeting entrepeneur Andre Balazs in Soho, it is on to the garment district where we encounter discerningly stylish Waris Ahluwalia, a talented jewellery designer and actor. So it is now that we arrive in London, the finale of the grand world tour – and a fitting city in which to bring the journey to an end – as Louis Vuitton celebrate the opening of their New Bond Street store on May 28th. Tim Marlow, the art historian and writer, and rising star of the contemporary art scene Oliver Clegg are among the London boys that complete the journey of a man’s wardrobe. As we meet our city guides, the chimes of Big Ben ring out in the background, only to be disturbed by the drone of city sirens and the familiar voice of ‘Mind the gap’. Visit Louis Vuitton’s Journey of a Man’s Wardrobe to experience the fifth and final installment now.

Jas M.B and Brady for ASOS Best of British

You can never underestimate a good man-bag. It’s a sign of a truly well dressed man – a significant component in the carefully considered outfit. It’s one of those staples of the modern man’s wardrobe that simultaneously hints at practicality and style. And most importantly, it holds your stuff. But simply acting as a holdall for your belongings is not enough for the man bag; it must look stylish, be good quality, and most importantly not fall apart at the hint of carrying anything more than an i-phone. Managing to cover all of the above bases is the ASOS Best of British collaboration between heritage brand Brady and London based designer Jas M.B. The ASOS Best of British collection aims to celebrate the nation’s wealth of design talent, and has produced a number of collaborations between well-known British brands from Ally Capellino and Doc Martens to Eley Kishimoto and Orlebar Brown. The Brady and Jas M.B collaboration has produced two styles of leather bag: the Marlborough holdall, £350, and the interestingly named Arial Trout Satchel, £270. Combining a mix of Brady’s heritage for hardwearing country sport accessories and Jas M.B’s understated but practical aesthetic, both bags bring these components together to offer two truly stylish bags. The Arial Trout satchel features a square leather front with buckle fastening and a long adjustable strap for wearing across the body. Sharing the textured design of the satchel, the holdall features a front logo and contrast handle for a sturdy and stylish weekend bag. Both are available to buy now from ASOS.

Five minutes with model and designer Lisa Butcher

At just 15-years-old, Lisa Butcher started life out as model. After winning British ELLE’s first modelling competition back in 1987, she was dubbed the ‘Face of the 90s’ by royal photographer Norman Parkinson and went on to star in campaigns for major brands including Ralph Lauren, Yves Saint Laurent and Max Factor. Sticking with the fashion theme, Lisa also presented the first series of hit TV show Britain’s Next Top Model and worked alongside Mica Paris on BBC’s What Not To Wear, following the departure of the (rather terrifying) Trinny and Susannah. And now? Well, it seems the British beauty can add a few more strings to her stylish bow, as she is currently a designer and ambassador for tall-fashion specialist, Long Tall Sally. We caught up with Lisa after the launch of Long Tall Sally’s very first National Stand Tall Week to find out more about her involvement with the brand and to see what advice she could give to tall ladies out there who might struggle when it comes to shopping on the high-street. How did your collaboration with Long Tall Sally come about? Long tall Sally approached me after the second series of What Not To Wear. I had heard of the brand before, but felt the collections could be stronger. As it happened, the Bennett Brothers – who turned around Oasis and Phase Eight amongst other brands – had just bought out the business and wanted to create a totally new image for Long Tall Sally, so I jumped at the chance to work with them as they have such great reputations. I asked if I could have a go at designing, and it proved really successful and has just grown from there. Plus, it’s also loads of fun! As a designer and ambassador for Long […]

Boutique by Jaeger Press Day

Get ready for a new lust-have label to add to your list as British heritage brand Jaeger plan to launch their new Boutique range. We went along to their press day recently to take a look at this hotly anticipated new collection as well as having a peek at their mainline offerings for the new season. Inspired by their iconic 60s young Jaeger range the collection has been re-interpreted for today’s modish young Londoner. Boasting the quality and fabrics of the Jaeger we know so well, the Boutique line adds a contemporary rock-n-roll vibe to this classic British brand. An array of trousers, dresses, blouses, jackets and coats in tailored wool, laminated tweed, electric-blue silks and edgy prints make for a surprising yet totally covetable collection. It manages to marry sixties spirit with a contemporary edge without losing sight of Jaeger’s rich heritage. What’s most exciting is that the collection really speaks to a younger buyer with trend driven pieces in dazzling fabrics and retro styling. While the pricing is 30-50% less than their mainline offerings, the price tag at Jaeger Boutique is still a little steep for the twenty-something crowd they’re aiming to capture. There’s no doubt we’ll fall in love with it, but it may be a case of one investment piece once in a while rather than a must-have off the rail purchase every week. Although that electric blue silk dress is doing a good job of persuading me to ignore the bills and buy it anyway…

Fight Cervical Cancer in Style

Last night, some of the biggest names in fashion and music joined hands to hold a star-studded extravaganza for Fight Cervical Cancer in Style, a national campaign which helps to raise awareness about the disease and teach women how to reduce their risk. In case you don’t already know, this week is European Cervical Cancer Prevention Week, and getting London’s ball rolling is PM’s wife Sarah Brown, whose charity Wellbeing of Women, alongside Jo’s Trust, is backing the campaign. We popped down to Camden’s Koko nightclub to take a peek at the pop-performances on offer and feast our eyes on some fabulous fashion from London-cool label PPQ, who put on a colourful catwalk comprising their favourite looks for spring. So as models strutted their stuff in this season’s hottest looks and some of Britain’s biggest chart-toppers belted out their hottest hits, our focus turned to what they were wearing , we’re fighting in style, after all. From the ever-quirky Paloma Faith who wore a glittery red ‘P’ hat with matching heart balloons tied to her wrist, to Pixie Lott in a classic LBD, La Roux in a matching top and bottom 80s-inspired ensemble by Basso and Brooke, and the Sugababes who barely wore a thing, their styles were worlds apart. But one thing linked them together: these pop princesses, alongside our hosts for the evening Lauren Laverne and Miquita Oliver, are raising awareness of cervical cancer and helping to educate young women about the disease, which kills three women everyday in the UK alone. “We’re delighted with the amount of celebrity support that has been forthcoming for this important campaign, Robert Music, Director of Jo’s Trust, says. “Cervical cancer can be a devastating disease and may not have any symptoms until it is quite advanced, so it’s essential that girls […]
